The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has barred 13 schools in Kogi State from participating in the West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) due to involvement in examination malpractices during the 2023/2024 exams.
Kogi State’s Commissioner for Education, Mr. Wemi Jones, disclosed this during a meeting with principals and supervisors implicated by WAEC. He revealed that, in addition to banning the schools, 14 supervisors had been blacklisted for their roles in the malpractice incidents.
The commissioner warned that the state government is determined to penalize any school principals, teachers, or supervisors who either engaged in or facilitated exam malpractices. He emphasized that such actions are criminal offences and will be prosecuted under the Kogi State Education Law and Other Matters Connected Therewith, 2020.
A committee, to be led by the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, will investigate individuals implicated by WAEC, Jones added. “Kogi State has made significant investments in education and will no longer tolerate ‘bad eggs’ undermining the sector’s progress,” he stated.
Dr. Seidu Jibrin, Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, also urged principals and supervisors to reflect on their actions. “While some educators are celebrated for excellence, it is disheartening to see others condemned for malpractice. Those found guilty will face severe consequences,” Jibrin said.
The state government reiterated its commitment to upholding integrity and ensuring accountability in its education system.
