Who Can Apply For A NELFUND Loan — And How Compulsory Is It?

The fund’s first explicit position on who should apply — and a reminder that “interest-free” does not mean “repayment-free.”

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has ruled out any form of compulsion: student loans are voluntary, and tertiary students should apply only when they genuinely need financial assistance to stay in school.

In a statement signed in Abuja on Wednesday by Oseyemi Oluwatuyi, Director of Strategic Communications, NELFUND said the scheme exists to remove “financial barriers to higher education” and to ensure no eligible student is shut out by cost. Students who can fund their own studies, the fund stressed, are under no obligation to apply.

Why the clarification matters

NELFUND warned that making the loan universal, regardless of means, would contradict the scheme’s purpose — supporting those who need help rather than encouraging indiscriminate borrowing. “The student loan scheme is a support mechanism, not an obligation,” the statement read. The fund asked institutions, student union leaders and stakeholders to circulate accurate information and guide genuinely needy applicants.

The catch students must read

The facility is interest-free — but it is not a grant. Beneficiaries carry repayment obligations under the Student Loans Act, and NELFUND advised applicants to understand the terms and conditions before signing up. That distinction is the real content of the statement: it removes the fear of a forced debt while reinstating the reality of a deferred one.

The scheme is part of the Federal Government’s push to widen access to tertiary education. For prospective applicants, the practical framework is now clear — who: eligible students with genuine financial need; what: an interest-free loan for educational costs; where: through NELFUND’s official application channels for recognised tertiary institutions; how: apply only if needed, read the terms, and repay as the law requires.
