Why FG Is Giving Nigerians ₦50,000 Grant

The Federal Government has explained why it introduced a ₦50,000 cash grant for vulnerable Nigerians, citing rising food prices, the high cost of essential goods and increasing financial pressure on households.

The initiative, known as the National Emergency Relief and Stabilisation Intervention (NERSI), was announced on October 30, 2026, by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Dr Bernard Doro.

According to the minister, the programme is designed to provide immediate financial assistance to low-income households struggling to meet their daily needs.

Why Is FG Giving Nigerians ₦50,000?

Doro explained that global food inflation and the rising cost of essential commodities have continued to put pressure on Nigerian households.

He said the government introduced the intervention to help vulnerable families purchase basic necessities, reduce financial hardship and maintain some economic stability.

The minister also described the programme as part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen social protection and help families withstand economic difficulties.

Under the initiative, eligible beneficiaries will receive ₦50,000 directly through approved financial service providers.

The minister’s October 30 statement described the payment as monthly support. However, the programme’s official guidance describes a ₦50,000 grant without confirming a recurring payment schedule.

The government has yet to publicly clarify the difference between the two descriptions.

Who Is Eligible for the ₦50,000 Grant?

The Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction said beneficiaries are selected from the National Social Register and verified national identity records.

The selection process targets poor and vulnerable households across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones.

According to the ministry, Nigerians do not need to submit applications or pay registration fees to participate.

Selected individuals will receive official text messages informing them of their eligibility.

How Will Beneficiaries Receive the Money?

The government said payments will be processed through licensed digital financial service providers, including OPay, Moniepoint, ALAT, MoMo PSB and NairaGram.

Beneficiaries must confirm their willingness to participate before the grant is transferred into their mobile wallets.

The ministry explained that payments are being processed in phases, meaning eligible Nigerians may not receive notifications simultaneously.

The ₦50,000 is a grant, not a loan, and beneficiaries are not required to repay it.

FG Warns Nigerians Against Grant Scams

The government has warned Nigerians to avoid individuals or organisations demanding money in exchange for grant registration or payment processing.

It stressed that the programme is free and that no agent can guarantee selection.

Beneficiaries were also advised not to disclose their Bank Verification Numbers, personal identification numbers or one-time passwords to anyone.

For further information, Nigerians can visit the official NERSI portal at https://fmhapr.gov.ng/nersi/ or contact the programme’s helpline on 0700-022-2222.

The government said the intervention would complement existing economic support programmes and provide immediate relief to households facing financial difficulties.
