No fewer than 11 people have lost their lives in a tragic road accident that occurred at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos Road in Ogun State, the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed.
According to the Ogun State Sector Command of the FRSC, the fatal lone crash involved a gold Toyota vehicle with registration number GGE722KJ, which reportedly somersaulted and plunged off the bridge.
The agency disclosed that the impact of the crash caused the vehicle doors to lock, trapping all occupants inside.
“The sector commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, sadly informs the public of the tragic incident of a fatal lone accident at Eruku Bridge along the Abeokuta-Lagos route, which occurred earlier tonight, May 10, 2026.
“The FRSC rescue team from Itori Unit Command was said to have been deployed to the scene immediately. But unfortunately, all 11 people on board lost their lives in the crash,” a statement issued by the FRSC Superintendent Route Commander of the Ogun Sector, Odunsin Afolabi, stated.
The FRSC attributed the accident to overloading and the driver allegedly operating the vehicle under the influence.
Afolabi explained that preliminary investigations pointed to reckless conditions surrounding the journey as the likely cause of the deadly crash.
“FRSC personnel, with help from the local community, dismantled the vehicle to recover the bodies, while the dead have been moved to the State Specialist Hospital Morgue in Ifo,” he said.
The incident adds to the growing concerns over road safety violations and night travel on major highways across the country.
Reacting to the tragedy, the Ogun State Sector Commander, Corps Commander Oludare Ogunjobi, extended condolences to the families of the victims.
He also urged motorists and travellers using the Abeokuta-Lagos Road to exercise caution, especially during nighttime travel, to prevent similar accidents.
