The Edo State Police Command has begun an investigation into a fatal shooting that occurred on Sunday evening around the University of Benin (UNIBEN) area in Benin City.
According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, preliminary findings showed that three occupants of a Mercedes-Benz GLK vehicle, Onwuke Blessed, Alexander Omogiate, and Chinenye Christian Mbagwu were leaving the university when they were reportedly attacked near the institution’s main gate in Ugbowo.
Police said an unidentified white GLK vehicle intercepted them, after which the occupants allegedly rolled down their windows and opened fire before fleeing the scene.
The victims sustained different degrees of gunshot injuries during the attack. A female passerby identified as Dorathy Ubah was also reportedly struck by bullets
Security operatives were said to have responded quickly after receiving distress reports, and the injured victims were rushed to the University of Benin Teaching Hospital (UBTH) for treatment.
Sadly, Alexander Omogiate was confirmed dead by the doctor on duty, while the other victims are reportedly responding to treatment.
The Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a comprehensive investigation to identify and arrest those behind the attack.
The police command also warned criminal elements operating around university communities and other parts of the state to stay away from violence and unlawful activities, stressing its determination to tackle crime across Edo State.
Authorities assured residents that efforts were ongoing to ensure the suspects are tracked down and prosecuted.
“The police assured the public that no stone will be left unturned in ensuring those responsible for this heinous act are apprehended and prosecuted.”
The command further appealed to members of the public with useful information to assist the investigation by reporting to the nearest police station or using the command’s emergency contact lines, assuring that all information would be treated confidentially.
Meanwhile, Monday Okpebholo has strongly condemned the shooting incident.
In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, the governor described the killing as a senseless and disturbing act that threatens public safety and undermines the values of his administration.
He also extended condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased victim.
