GWR Confirms Nigerian Doctor’s World Record for Largest Drawing

Dr. Fola David-Tolaram, a Nigerian doctor and artist, has achieved a remarkable milestone by setting the Guinness World Record for the largest drawing created by an individual. Guinness World Records confirmed his accomplishment on Thursday.

The stunning artwork, which measures 1,004.7 m² (10,814.5 ft²)—about the size of 3.8 tennis courts—was crafted on the pitch at Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Lagos. It stands as a tribute to Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage.

David-Tolaram, 31, explained that his creation, titled The Unity of Diversity, is a symbolic map of Nigeria celebrating the nation’s many cultures. “Nigeria is a multi-cultural nation,” he said. “I wanted to create something that speaks to that and give people an avenue to celebrate their cultures.” The artwork features elements of Nigerian life, including food, clothing, festivals, and music, showcasing the beauty of the country’s varied traditions.

Before starting the record-breaking piece, David-Tolaram traveled across Nigeria to experience its different cultures firsthand, bringing these inspirations to his massive canvas. The project took six days to complete on a 1,360 m² canvas, using waterproof markers. Assembly of the canvases alone required two days.

Initially, he planned to work from the center outward in a circular pattern but adjusted his technique as the project progressed. Reflecting on the challenge, he recalled his initial hesitation, saying, “I remember standing in the center of this canvas, feeling apprehensive. For five minutes, I stood there preparing myself mentally.” Once he began, his confidence grew, saying, “The moment my marker touched the canvas, there was no going back.”

Throughout the project, spectators gathered in the 5,000-seat stadium to watch and support him. David-Tolaram described the atmosphere as “electrifying.” Now a Guinness World Record holder, he shared his pride and excitement, saying, “I grew up reading about world records and never imagined I would hold one. This accomplishment is truly an honor.”
