Binance $6.3bn Hack Sends Bitcoin And Ethereum Prices Down

The cryptocurrency market has come under fresh pressure following a record-breaking $6.3 billion security breach at Binance, the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchange, with Bitcoin and other major digital assets recording significant losses.

Bitcoin fell to a six-week low of $76,368 on Friday, October 30, after news of the massive theft rattled investors and triggered concerns about the security of digital assets held on centralised cryptocurrency exchanges.

Ethereum also suffered, dropping more than three per cent to around $2,178, while Binance’s native token, BNB, fell five per cent to approximately $709.70 over a 24-hour period, according to CoinGecko figures cited by Reuters.

The sell-off extended beyond cryptocurrencies. Shares of Coinbase, one of the world’s largest publicly traded cryptocurrency exchanges, declined 4.8 per cent, while shares of Strategy, a major corporate holder of Bitcoin, dropped nearly six per cent in extended US trading.

A record-breaking crypto heist

The market reaction followed the theft of approximately $6.3 billion in digital assets from Binance in what analysts describe as the biggest cryptocurrency theft on record.

Blockchain intelligence firms TRM Labs and Chainalysis have attributed the attack, with high confidence, to North Korea’s state-linked hacking operations. The suspected attackers reportedly drained assets from Binance wallets across multiple blockchain networks, with much of the operation unfolding within about 20 minutes.

Binance’s initial investigation pointed to a compromised laptop belonging to one of its engineers, which may have given the attackers access to an internal system used to authorise withdrawals.

The exchange subsequently identified additional points of breach.

The incident has raised serious questions about the security infrastructure of cryptocurrency exchanges, particularly the systems responsible for holding and transferring customers’ digital assets.

Billions frozen, but questions remain

In response, Binance temporarily suspended withdrawals while it worked with law enforcement agencies, blockchain intelligence firms and cryptocurrency partners to trace and recover the stolen assets.

The exchange initially reported that approximately $3 billion had been located, while independent on-chain analysis by Bitquery put the amount frozen or rescued at about $2.7 billion.

Stablecoin issuers Tether and Circle were among the companies that intervened, freezing approximately $1.76 billion in USDT and $823 million in USDC, respectively, according to Bitquery’s October 30 investigation.

However, billions of dollars remained in wallets controlled by the attackers.

Binance’s co-CEO, Richard Teng, assured customers that their funds were safe and pledged that the company would cover all losses using its Secure Asset Fund for Users and company resources.

The exchange, which reported 335 million registered users globally and approximately $162.8 billion in assets under custody in its 2025 annual report, is now facing a major test of investor confidence.

A bigger problem for the crypto industry?

The Binance incident comes amid growing concerns about cybersecurity risks in the cryptocurrency industry.

According to TRM Labs, approximately $2.9 billion worth of cryptocurrency was stolen across nearly 150 attacks in 2025.

The latest breach also surpasses the approximately $1.5 billion stolen from cryptocurrency exchange Bybit in February 2025, an attack attributed by the FBI to North Korean hackers.

For investors, the immediate concern goes beyond falling prices. It is whether cryptocurrency exchanges can adequately protect assets entrusted to them.

Analysts warn that the incident could make investors more cautious about keeping their digital assets on centralised platforms and further weaken risk appetite in an already pressured market.

While Binance has promised to absorb the losses, the broader cryptocurrency industry faces a difficult question: if the world’s largest exchange can suffer a breach of this magnitude, how secure are investors’ digital assets?

The market is watching, and the consequences could extend well beyond Binance.
