Dnipro Station Strike: 14 Dead As Russia Hits Ukraine

A Russian jet-powered drone struck a crowded Dnipro rail platform, killing 14, as other attacks killed six more and a Kherson truce held its third day.

A jet-powered Russian drone struck a crowded platform at the main railway station in the Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday 29 October 2026, killing at least 14 people as a commuter train prepared to depart, according to state railway Ukrzaliznytsia.

Further attacks killed six people elsewhere in Ukraine, and a missile strike on Kyiv shortly before 11 p.m. killed one more, the city’s military administration said. The wave of strikes landed as a six-day, US-brokered truce in the Kherson region held for a third day and a humanitarian mission prepared to enter the Russian-held town of Oleshky.

The human cost

Prime Minister Sergiy Koretskyi said Russia was “deliberately hunting civilians: on trains, at stations, in residential buildings”, adding there was “no justification for this terror”.

Rescuers assisted victims at the scene in Dnipro, where Ukrainian emergency services released images of the shrapnel-marked platform. A separate strike on the city set a student dormitory alight, and the regional governor said 350,000 households lost power.

In Chernihiv, two teenage girls were killed on a central street and 23 people, including four children, were wounded in a drone attack on a busy downtown area.

In Kremenchuk, strikes on a residential block and private houses killed three and wounded 32. In Zaporizhzhia, drones struck city buses in three attacks, wounding six.

President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attacks “very cruel” and “deliberate when everyone expects de-escalation steps”. Moscow denies targeting civilians.

Beyond the casualties

A separate strike hit a student dormitory in Dnipro, setting it alight, and regional governor Oleksandr Hanzha said a full day of assaults cut power to 350,000 households in the city. Strikes on the rail network and other critical infrastructure have upended civilian life and damaged the economy, exploiting an acute shortage of air-defence missiles.

In Kyiv, warehouses burned and falling debris damaged a building east of the Dnipro river. Zelensky said Ukraine held intelligence “about preparations by the Russians of new ballistic missile strikes” and that Kyiv was “expecting relevant decisions” from partners on the means to counter them.

The diplomacy track

The Kherson truce applies only to that southern region. Both sides issued virtually identical statements confirming de-mining was complete, clearing the way for aid into Oleshky, a town of roughly 2,000 people marooned in a war zone since the 2022 invasion and reported to be short of food.

France 24, reporting on 29 October, said the localised ceasefire was brokered by US First Lady Melania Trump. Semafor said its survival alongside Thursday’s strikes highlighted Washington’s uneven progress in ending Europe’s deadliest conflict since World War Two. New three-way talks are expected next month, and Ukrainian officials including presidential adviser Kyrylo Budanov are urging Kyiv’s partners to pressurise Moscow.
