Polar Medal: King Charles III Honours Antarctic-trekking Academic

1

An Antarctic-trekking academic has been awarded the Polar Medal.

Prof John Smellie, from the University of Leicester, was given the accolade by King Charles III.

It is the second time he has received the medal, having been awarded one by Queen Elizabeth II in 1986.

The professor, who spent most of his career working as a senior volcanologist for the British Antarctic Survey, said he had been “quite shocked” to receive the honour twice.

The Polar Medal is awarded to people for outstanding achievement and service to the UK in the field of polar research.

Originally called the Arctic Medal, it has existed for 150 years.

There have been more than 1,000 recipients but fewer than two dozen have had it conferred twice.

Sir Ranulph Fiennes is one of the famous recipients of the medal
Previous recipients of the medal include Sir Ernest Shackleton, Captain Robert Falcon Scott and Sir Ranulph Fiennes.

Prof Smellie is an honorary professor of volcanology in the school of geography, geology and the environment at the university.

The university said he had visited and worked on more volcanoes in Antarctica than any other person. As a result, he has sometimes been nicknamed Mr Antarctic Volcano.

Prof Smellie first visited Antarctica as a 21-year-old and has carried out 27 expeditions to Antarctica, most recently in late 2022.

U.S. Teacher Shot By Six-Year-old Shows Sign Of Improvement

0

The condition of a Virginia teacher left seriously injured when she was shot by a six-year-old pupil has shown signs of improvement, authorities say.

Abby Zwerner suffered life-threatening injuries after she was shot with a handgun at Richneck Elementary School in the city of Newport News on Friday.

Mayor Phillip Jones told the BBC that Ms Zwerner’s recovery was “trending in a positive direction”.

But he added that she remained in a critical condition after the incident.

Online, social media users wished Ms Zwerner – who is believed to be in her 30s – a speedy recovery.

Her alma mater, James Madison University in Virginia, offered “prayers and best wishes for Abby’s health and recovery”.

It is unclear how the child – who remains in police custody – obtained the gun. Officials said that while the school – which has around 550 students – had metal detection facilities, students were checked at random and not every child was inspected.

Police have declined to say what might have motivated the incident, but Chief Steve Drew told reporters the shooting had come after an “altercation” in a first grade (ages six to seven) classroom and did not appear to be “accidental”.

One parent, Steve Gonzalez, whose child was present in the classroom at the time of the shooting, said Ms Zwerner had reacted selflessly after the shooting.

He said that after being struck by the bullet “she screamed at her kids to run away”.

Mayor Jones – who took office just five days ago – said police were continuing to investigate the circumstances around the shooting, but said he thought the “word altercation was a valid one, and one that I would use”.

“We don’t have all the answers about how a six-year-old was able to handle a firearm or how a six-year-old was able to access a firearm,” he said.

“This is a dark day in our history and I think this is a red flag for the country.”

Officers have also declined to discuss what contact they have had with the student’s parents.

Virginia law prevents six-year-olds being tried as adults. And the child would also be too young to be committed to the custody of the Department of Juvenile Justice if found guilty.

But a judge could revoke the parents’ custody of the boy and take him into the supervision of the state.

On Saturday, Chief Drew said police had “been in contact with our commonwealth’s attorney [local prosecutor] and some other entities to help us best get services to this young man”.

School District Superintendent George Parker said on Saturday that the shooting showed “we need to educate our children and we need to keep them safe”.

“We need the community’s support, continued support, to make sure that guns are not available to youth and I’m sounding like a broken record today, because I continue to reiterate that: that we need to keep the guns out of the hands of our young people,” he added.

Newport News is a city of around 180,000 people and sits about 70 miles (112km) to the south of the state capital Richmond.

Chinese Borders Reopens For First Time Since 2020, Quarantine Scrapped

3

China has reopened its borders to international visitors for the first time since it imposed travel restrictions in March 2020.

Incoming travellers will no longer need to quarantine – marking a significant change in the country’s Covid policy as it battles a surge in cases.

They will still require proof of a negative PCR test taken within 48 hours of travelling.

The move has been welcomed by many eager to reunite with family.

In Hong Kong, 400,000 people are expected to travel into mainland China in the coming weeks with long queues for flights into cities including Beijing and Xiamen.

On Sunday, double-decker coaches packed with travellers arrived at the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macau Bridge to catch buses to the Guangdong province – among them were college students returning home.

Exploring Alofaaga Blowholes, Samoa

0

The Alofaaga Blowholes, also known by Taga Blowholes, are an interesting natural feature located on the island of Savai’i, within the Independent State of Samoa in the Pacific Ocean.

Located very close to the village of Taga, on the south east coast of the island, these interesting blowholes are nothing else but a series of lava tubes created from lava flow in the past.

The tube to the top is flat and the bottom part of the tube is connected with the ocean below.

Whenever there are waves breaking against the lower end of the tubes, the water then is sent to the upper part of the tube under high pressure, thus erupting as high as 20 meters (66 feet) like fountains that spray water every few seconds.

Together with the impressive sight of the blowholes, a loud puffing sound is created too that punctuates each gush of seawater.

As they are one of the most powerful blowholes in the world, getting there is definitely something what one should do when visiting the island nation.

The locals are charging visitors a small fee, nevertheless, they also sell coconuts which then are put in the blowholes and after that they blast up like cannonballs.

The best time to enjoy this is at high tide, however, have in mind that most certainly you would get wet.

Still, everyone should pay great deal of attention, also not getting close to this attraction due to the slippery rocks, and the fact as well if one falls in one of the blowholes, it would almost certainly be fatal. So, be extra careful and try to enjoy as much as you can in this alluring place.

Prince Harry’s Book Sold Ahead Of Official Launch Date In Spain

3

Several bookstores in Spain were selling the much-awaited memoir by Britain’s Prince Harry on Thursday, five days ahead of the book’s official launch date.

A reporter bought a Spanish-language copy of “Spare”, which was due to be published on Jan. 10, at a large bookstore in Madrid.

A scan of the book confirmed a passage first reported by Britain’s Guardian newspaper in which King Charles’ son described being knocked to the floor during an argument with his older brother and heir to the throne, Prince William.

Initial attempts to purchase the memoir were unsuccessful. At one shop, the seller said the book had already sold out.

At another, the book was displayed on shelves but a staff member withdrew it after the reporter asked why it was being sold in Spain earlier than in Britain.

A spokesperson for the Spanish publisher, Barcelona-based Plaza y Janes Editores – which belongs to multinational conglomerate Penguin Random House – said: “A very clear launch protocol was established and communicated to all customers so that the book would not be marketed before that date.

“Everything points to the fact that some customers have breached their commitment to the publisher and have put the book on sale before the agreed date.”

Bendel Insurance FC Begin Premier League Campaign With Akwa Utd Test In Uyo

0

The 2022/23 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) will finally kick off on Sunday,January 8,2023 as scheduled with Bendel Insurance Football Club of Benin being guests to 2020/21 champions Akwa United of Uyo in the curtain raiser game of the new league season.

The league is in abridged format as designed by the interim management Company headed by its chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye which received the nod of the Nigeria Football Federation and lastly that of the twenty participating Club owners after issues and disagreements between the League Organisers and club representatives on the league format.

The rest MatchDay1 fixtures earlier scheduled to hold simultaneously with Akwa Utd-Insurance game have been rescheduled to hold on Sunday, January 15,2023 across the various centres nationwide.

The Akwa United and Bendel Insurance game is scheduled to kick off at 4Pm at the Next of Champions pitch of Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.

The game which is also expected to be streamed live on terrestrial TV, Bendel Insurance facebook TV and YouTube,no doubt will attract a large followership and the esteemed presence of the NFF president Alhaji Ibrahim Musa Gusau and IMC Chairman, Sunday Elegbeleye in Uyo.

The Benin Arsenal will be meeting their Sunday game hosts Akwa Utd for the first time since 2008 before their relegation to the NNL.

Insurance returned to the premier league in 2019 after ten years in relegation but were not in the same group with Akwa Utd in the abridged League which was not favourable to all the four promoted clubs as the Benin Arsenal immediately returned to the second tier League.

The Benin Arsenals are again made to play in another abridged format this season but have been working hard and have fortified their side in a bid to avoid a repeat of the 2019 setback.

Insurance have so far registered about thirty players to begin the new season with a blend of enterprising young and experienced players as they aimed to retain their new status as Nigeria premier league club.
They parade the likes of Imade Osarenkhoe, Iyeanyi Okorogha, Divine Nwachukwu, Benjamin Tanimu and Sunday Anyanwu who were among the best players and highest goal scorers in the last season of the Nigeria National League (NNL).

The Benin Arsenals now have some experienced NPFL players in their fold including Austin Ogunye,Ebuka Akobundu both signed from Sunshine Stars; Osas Okoro(Nasarawa utd);Micah Ojodomo and Julius Emiloju (MFM) and Ebeneza Odeyrmi from Gombe Utd among others.

Insurance FC are better prepared this time for the premier league rigours by coach Monday Odigie who returned from study leave to take the team back to the top flight league for the second time between 2018 and now. Coach Odigie left the club after the 2019 for study abroad and returned in 2021/22 season and immediately guided the Benin Arsenals to the NPFL again.

According to the Insurance Technical Director Monday Odigie, after his team defeated Rangers International FC of Enugu in the NPFL-Dozzy Super Cup preseason tournament in Lagos,” Bendel Insurance FC is work in progress. We are still building and with God helping us we will produce a formidable team that will not only vie for NPFL titles but one that can intimidate big teams at CAF competitions. We are not there yet but it is our desire to build a solid team.”

Insurance finished as best and champions of the Nigeria National League NNL campaign last year and they are in the premier league to fight for a permanent stay and as well vie for honours.

Speaking ahead the Sunday game,Insurance stand-in captain Efe Enabulele said,” We have respect for the 2020/21 NPFL champions but not afraid of our host or any other team in the League. We will be approaching the game with confidence and strength”.

On the other hand,Akwa United were not fantastic in their last season campaign as they were in 2021 but that will not make Insurance complacent and underestimate the Promise Keepers who will be enjoying the cheers from their home fans and other home support.

The game however promises to be explosive and bring out the best in Insurance FC.

“I want to have a decent season and I’m hoping for good officiating for the league and for some of the games to be televised”, Nwabulu told newsmen

As he shares his excitement, the goal tender hopes to help the team play on the continent next season as a personal goal.

“I’m very happy the league will commence on Sunday and I want my team to have a good season and to earn the chance to play in CAF competitions next season”, he said.

The 2023 league season kicks off on Sunday, 8th January, with one game on offer between Akwa United and newly promoted Bendel Insurance at the Nest of Champions in Uyo.

Nigerian-Born Chukwuemeka Aims To Break Into Chelsea Team After Man City Display

2

Carney Chibueze Chukwuemeka

Nigerian-born Carney Chukwuemeka got into limelight in the home loss of his Chelsea team to Premier League title-chasing Manchester City on Thursday night at Stamford Bridge.

On another night,  Chukwuemeka could have been facing the media to speak about opening his Chelsea account rather than analysing a narrow home defeat to Manchester City.

He reflected on his low drive that rattled back off the woodwork while the game was still evenly poised at 0-0.

‘My heart skipped, literally, when I took the shot because I thought it was in!’ Carney said of his effort that came back off the post”, he told Sky Sports

‘Obviously it wasn’t meant to be today and I’ve hit the post but I’ve just got to keep working and hopefully it will come in the next few games.

The midfielder, who joined the action as a first-half substitute, impressed for Chelsea and felt he grasped his opportunity well as he seeks further opportunities in the side, although admitted he was left disappointed Chelsea ended the game with nothing to show.

“We worked really hard out of possession and limited their chances and caused them some problems so I think we did have the better first half but we couldn’t find a goal.

“I feel like because of how young I am, I don’t have anything to lose I can just express myself and I think that’s the same with the others. It’s a big opportunity to build on and try and break into the team because of the injuries.”

Chukwuemeka was brought in after 22 minutes after Christian Pulsiic  was forced off the pitch. The 19-year-old arguably made the most out of this opportunity and was a bit unlucky not to score. He was a £20m summer signing from Aston Villa.

The Nigerian now has a real chance to start on Sunday in the FA Cup clash with the same opponent. Born in Austria to Nigerian parents, Chukwuemeka is eligible to play for the national teams of Austria, England and Nigeria.

The 19-year old  has however made two appearances for England U-17 and U-18.
