Anambra State Receives Donation Of Health Kits For Women, Adolescent

0

Anambra state government has received a donation of health kits for adolescents and women in the state from Family Health International, a group under the Global Fund organization dedicated to HIV/AIDs prevention, treatment, care and support services for adults and children within a strengthened health care delivery system.

This took place at the office of the Commissioner for women and social welfare Anambra state, Honourable Ify Obinabo where the team visited and made the delivery.

Speaking before presenting the items, the Senior Program Officer Global Fund – National Aligned HIV/AIDS Initiative Project, Mr Henry Udenenwu noted that Nigeria as a country is both donor and recipient of the Global Fund explaining that it is the grant that is implemented that covers the scope of general population including young women and children.

In her paper presentation, Leah Umeokeke explained that the aim of the initiative is to reduce the risk of contracting HIV/AIDS among adolescents and also bring to the barest minimum the transmission of sexually Transmitted Infections/Diseases.

Responding, the state’s Women and Social Welfare Commissioner, Honourable Obinabo appreciated them for their support and assured of more collaboration with the Global Fund. Obinabo urged the team to also organize a seminar for social workers in the different local government areas of the state in order to help the Sexual and Gender Based Violence response team in their delivery of duty.

The intervention which is done in stages is targeted at addressing some of the risk factors dominant in young ones such as biological, behavioral and structural factors. Items donated were HIV self test kits, packs of male condoms, Umbrellas, Packs of Sanitary Pads and Female condoms.

The commissioner appreciated the officials on behalf of the state government and promised to ensure safe and prompt delivery of the items to the appropriate quarters.

AP Fires Reporter Behind Retracted ‘Russian Missiles’ Story

0

The Associated Press scared much of the world last Tuesday when it alerted readers that “a senior U.S. intelligence official” said “Russian missiles crossed into NATO member Poland, killing two people.”

That report, which was widely cited across the internet and on cable news, was taken offline the following day and replaced with an editor’s note admitting the single source was wrong and that “subsequent reporting showed that the missiles were Russian-made and most likely fired by Ukraine in defense against a Russian attack.”

On Monday, the AP fired James LaPorta, the investigative reporter responsible for that story, Confider has learned.

The piece, which was originally co-bylined with John Leicester (who is still working at the AP), attributed the information to a single “senior U.S. intelligence official,” despite the AP’s rule that it “routinely seeks and requires more than one source when sourcing is anonymous.”

Iranian World Cup Squad Declines To Sing National Anthem

0

Iran’s World Cup soccer team declined to sing their national anthem before their opening match against England on Monday after many fans back home accused the squad of siding with a violent state crackdown on persistent popular unrest.

Protests demanding the fall of the ruling Shi’ite Muslim theocracy have gripped Iran since the death two months ago of young woman Mahsa Amini after her arrest for flouting the strict Islamic dress code.

Dozens of Iranian public figures, athletes and artists have displayed solidarity with the protesters – but not the national soccer team, until Monday’s match when all team members remained silent when the national anthem was played.

Iranian state television did not show the players lined up for the anthem before the match got under way in Qatar, just across the Gulf from their homeland.

The Iranian squad could not avoid being overshadowed by the anti-government unrest that has rattled Iran’s Shi’ite Muslim theocracy, while other World Cup teams were squarely focused on their tactics on the pitch.

Ahead of the match, no Iranian player had voiced support for the demonstrations by compatriots from all walks of life, one of the most sustained challenges to the cleric elite since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

In the past, the Iranian soccer team was a source of fired up national pride throughout the country. Now, with mass protests, many would prefer it withdrew from the World Cup.

Before travelling to Doha the team met with hardline Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi.

Photos of the players with Raisi, one of them bowing in front of him, went viral while the street unrest raged on, drawing an outcry on social media.

“I have mixed feelings. I love football but with all these children, women and men killed in Iran, I think the national team should not play,” university student Elmira, 24, said, speaking by telephone from Tehran before the match.

“It is not Iran’s team, it is the Islamic Republic’s team.

“They could refuse to take part in the World Cup or even refuse to play if they were forced to go, to show that they are part of the nation, to show solidarity with mothers in Iran whose children were killed by the regime (during protests).”

The activist HRANA news agency said 410 protesters had been killed in the unrest as of Saturday, including 58 minors.

Real Reason I Didn’t Play Against Super Eagles – Ronaldo

0

Portugal captain, Cristiano Ronaldo, has spoken for the first time since he missed their 4-0 win over Nigeria in last week’s international friendly.

Ronaldo missed their final warm-up game, but has trained as normal since arriving in Qatar.

The 37-year-old has not played since Manchester United’s 3-1 defeat to Aston Villa on November 6, but insists he’s ready to face Ghana on Thursday.

“I feel good. I had a small problem, but I’m already recovered. We’ve been doing good training, and I feel prepared to start the World Cup in the best way. I’m fine.

“I believe we have enormous potential. I believe [we can win] and I have that feeling, but we have to start well with Ghana, which is the hardest,” Ronaldo told a press conference on Monday.

Bruno Fernandes scored twice against the Super Eagles in the first half, before Gonzalo Ramos and Joao Mario added more goals late in the game.

World Cup Qatar 2022: England Off To Flying Start, Whip Iran 6-2

0

England’s World Cup campaign opened in thoroughly convincing fashion as they outclassed Iran in Doha.

The game was played out against the backdrop of more off-field controversy here in Qatar after England were forced to ditch plans to wear the OneLove armband promoting diversity and inclusivity under threat from Fifa of players being cautioned should they carry out the gesture of support.

Gareth Southgate’s side strolled to victory, with Iran’s hopeless plight made worse by the early loss of goalkeeper Alireza Beiranvand to concussion after a clash of heads with a team-mate.

Jude Bellingham got England off the mark in this World Cup with a soaring header from Luke Shaw’s cross 10 minutes before the break and the game was wrapped up before half-time thanks to Saka’s fine strike and Raheem Sterling’s classy volley with the outside of his foot from Harry Kane’s cross.

Iran’s supporters were given a moment of real delight when Mehdi Taremi scored a fine goal after 65 minutes but it only produced a ruthless response from England as Saka scored his second and substitute Marcus Rashford scored with his first involvement – both smooth, composed strikes.

To put the gloss on an incredibly dominant display, Jack Grealish slotted home from close range after a good run and pull back by Callum Wilson.

Iran did pull another back in injury time when Taremi slotted in a penalty after a John Stones foul.

It is almost impossible to deliver any firm judgement on England’s World Cup prospects given the paucity of Iran’s opposition but this could hardly have gone better for Southgate as his one major selection decision reaped a rich dividend and the result was almost perfect.

Iran were expected to provide stern resistance as they reside in the top 20 in the Fifa rankings and have a recent victory against Uruguay on their record but England made light work of the task once Bellingham gave them the lead.

Bellingham is being touted as one of the big emerging names at this World Cup, the 19-year-old Borussia Dortmund star already a target for a host of the game’s elite names.

And, even in the context of this game, Bellingham showed exactly why as he joined Saka as the dominant force in this game, scoring his first England goal with a magnificent header and bestriding midfield with a complete authority that belied his years.

This was only the second time England have scored six goals in a major tournament but on this evidence you would not bet against the brilliant Bellingham being involved the next time it happens.

Bellingham is a player with the world at his feet and a long career ahead of him at international level.

Southgate picked Saka ahead of Manchester City’s Phil Foden, the only mildly contentious decision in his line-up, but there can be no arguments after a hugely impressive performance from the 21-year-old who has played such a big part as Arsenal head the Premier League.

Saka scored twice and was a threat throughout and thoroughly deserved the warm applause he received when he was substituted.

It will get harder for England as they now face the United States and Wales but this was the perfect start.

Exploring National Museum Of Qatar

0

The immersive and experiential National Museum of Qatar tells the story of Qatar and its people from earliest times to today.

It brings to life the peninsula’s natural history, giving voice to Qatar’s rich heritage and culture, and expressing a vibrant community’s aspirations for the future.

The new museum embraces, as its centrepiece, the restored historic Palace of Sheikh Abdullah bin Jassim Al Thani (1880-1957), son of the founder of modern Qatar.

It’s a building that in former times was both the home of the Royal Family and the seat of government and was subsequently the site of the original National Museum.

Jean Nouvel’s new building incorporates the Palace while seamlessly integrating innovative artworks commissioned from Qatari and international artists, rare and precious objects, documentary materials and interactive learning opportunities.

Qatar – The Land With Salt Flats, Dune Desert And Arid Plains

0

So FIFA world cup started in Qatar, November 20, 2022.

What do you know about Qatar, what do you know about the Environment?

Let’s tell you.

Qatar, officially State of Qatar, is in southwestern Asia. It juts out from the east coast of the Arabian Peninsula into the Persian Gulf.

Area: 4,489 Sq Mi

Population: (2022 Est.) 3,059,000

Capital: Doha.

Most of the population is Arab, with South Asian and Iranian minorities who are often migrant workers.

Languages: Arabic (Official), English

Currency: Qatar Rial

Qatar is mostly stony, sandy, and barren and consists of salt flats, dune desert and arid plains.

Largely because of petroleum and natural gas exports, its gross national product per capita is one of the highest in the world.

The government owns all of the agricultural land and generates most of the economic activity; the private sector participates in trade and contracting on a limited scale.

Oil was discovered in 1939, and Qatar rapidly modernized. It declared independence in 1971, when the British protectorate ended.

Most of Qatar’s area is flat, low-lying desert, which rises from the east to a central limestone plateau.

Hills rise to about 130 feet along the western and northern coasts, and Abū al-Bawl Hill is the country’s highest point.

Sand dunes and salt flats, or sabkhahs, are the chief topographical features of the southern and southeastern sectors.

Qatar has more than 350 miles of coastline; its border with Saudi Arabia is some 37 miles long. There are no permanent bodies of fresh water.

6 Feet Of Snow In Western New York  Forces Flights Cancellation

0

Snowfall of more than 6 feet in western New York state prompted officials to restrict road travel and forced airlines to cancel flights in the Buffalo area ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.

A historic snowstorm is slamming western New York state Saturday with more than 6 feet of snow in some places, closing roads, triggering driving bans and canceling flights the weekend before the Thanksgiving holiday.

Another round of heavy lake-effect snowfall is expected to return to the Buffalo area Saturday night, according to the National Weather Service.

With most of the heavy snow bands falling over Lake Ontario, north of metro Buffalo.

Winter weather alerts are still in effect for over 8 million people across six Great Lakes states Saturday evening: Wisconsin, Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York.

Forecasters and officials have been sounding the alarm on the life-threatening nature of this snowstorm, which is historic even for the Buffalo region where heavy snow is the norm during winter months.

African Cotton Exporter, Benin Eyes Finished Products

0

Africa’s biggest cotton exporter, Benin, has built an industrial park to move the country away from raw exports to finished products.

Environmental activists say local manufacturing will also cut down on emissions.

According to government figures, Benin has in the last few years become Africa’s leading cotton producer, with annual production of 728,000 tonnes in 2020/21.

Cotton is grown in several West African countries including Mali, Togo, Burkina Faso and Ivory Coast, but most is exported raw with little industrial processing across the region.
