Iran has begun producing enriched uranium at 60% purity at the country’s underground Fordo nuclear plant, official media reported Tuesday, describing it as a response to a resolution by the United Nations’ nuclear watchdog.

The increased enrichment, reported by the official news agency IRNA, was seen as a significant addition to the country’s nuclear program.

Enrichment to 60% purity is one short, technical step away from weapons-grade levels of 90%. Nonproliferation experts have warned in recent months that Iran now has enough 60%-enriched uranium to reprocess into fuel for at least one nuclear bomb.

The International Atomic Energy Agency has reported that Iran is enriching uranium to 60% purity. Iran is already enriching to 60% purity at its Natanz nuclear facility in central Iran. Fordo is some 100 kilometers (62 miles) south of the capital of Tehran.

IRNA did not give details on the amount of the enriched uranium being produced.

On Monday, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman, Nasser Kanaani, said his country took the steps in reaction to what he said was a resolution by the IAEA, the UN nuclear watchdog. Officials did not elaborate.

Earlier this month, the IAEA said it believes that Iran has further increased its stockpile of highly enriched uranium. As recently as last week, the agency criticized Tehran for continuing to bar the agency’s officials from accessing or monitoring Iranian nuclear sites.

7.0 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Solomon Islands, Tsunami Alert Issued

0

A strong 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck the Solomon Islands on Tuesday, with eyewitnesses reporting violent shaking that hurled items to the ground and knocked out power in parts of the capital Honiara.

“This was a big one,” Joy Nisha, a receptionist with the Heritage Park Hotel in the capital Honiara said. “Some of the things in the hotel fell. Everyone seems OK, but panicky.”

There were no immediate reports of serious structural damage to buildings, but power was out in some areas of the city and people were rushing from their offices and fleeing to higher ground.

The nation’s attorney general, John Muria, posted images on social media of office files spilled from large metal filing cabinets.

The US Geological Survey revised the earthquake’s magnitude down from an initial 7.3.

The earthquake struck at a relatively shallow depth of 10 kilometres, just off the southwest coast of Guadalcanal island.

A tsunami warning was issued for an area of the Solomons coast within 300 kilometres (185 miles) of the epicentre.

“Tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to 1 meters above the tide level are possible for some coasts” in the area, a UN-backed Pacific warning system said.

Some coastal regions of Papua New Guinea and Vanuatu were also put on alert for tsunami waves of up to 30 centimetres (12 inches).

According to UN data, about 20,000 people live within 50 kilometres of the epicentre.

The Solomons — a sprawling archipelago in the South Pacific — is home to about 800,000 people.

Iran Closes Restaurant For Supporting England

0

Authorities have closed a restaurant in uptown Tehran for Instagram posts supporting England against Iran at the World Cup.

The Mizan News Agency reported that the unnamed restaurant had posted “unpatriotic content in support of England and wished for the defeat of our national team”.

England beat Iran 6-2 in its opening game at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, handing Team Melli its biggest ever defeat in the competition.

The team has been under scrutiny for weeks for not publicly supporting anti-government protests in Iran. Before the game, many users on social media had denounced the team, with some saying they would not even watch the games, and others saying they hoped Iran’s opponents would win.

The team notably chose not to sing the national anthem in what was seen as a show of defiance. However, anyone watching on Iranian state TV will not have noticed, as the channel cut to a wide shot at that moment – a common move for Iranian broadcasters.

Expert Says African Traditional Foods Consumption Recommended To Combat Diabetes

0

A diabetes specialist, Dr. Barbara Akinbowa has recommended the consumption of African traditional foods as a way to combat diabetes. She said this in Makurdi, Benue State in North Central Nigeria at a program organized by Society of Family Physicians, Nigerian Medical Association and Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria to commemorate the World Diabetes Day for Pensioners in the State.

Dr. Akinbowa also announced that the African Continent has been projected to record the highest cases of diabetes between 2040 and 2050 across the globe ahead of Europe and America who currently top the chat. She said the statistics which was based on the report of the International Diabetes Federation also places 7 in every 10 people over the age of 70 as diabetes patients globally.

She expressed concern that the African heath system which is not as robust as that of the west may be overwhelmed if measures are not taken to avert the situation.

Dr. Akinbowa blamed the over consumption of processed foods in the name of westernization as the major cause of diabetes apart from hereditary factors and called for revitalisation of abandoned African traditional foods.

Benue State Chairman of Nigerian Medical Association NMA, Dr. Usha Anenga told Journalists that the event was organized to create more awareness about diabetes, to administer free medical treatment and to donate free testing kits to the retirees to enable them plan their diets.

Dr. Anenga explained that the exercise was necessary considering the dangers associated with diabetes which he said is also very expensive in both management and treatment. ”The retirees were chosen for this gesture because they are more vulnerable to diabetes which some times come after retirement when resources are scarce, when social network is reduced and it becomes very difficult to cater for their condition”.

The NMA Chairman encouraged regular exercise and warned against sedentary lifestyle and over consumption of alcohol as risk factors that predisposes many people to diabetes. He cautioned against the use of herbal remedies for the treatment of diabetes and urged those with the condition to stick to their drugs and monitor their health statistics especially weight loss, dieting and increase in physical activities.

Dr. Anenga insisted that Societal challenges such as insecurity and poverty were among the factors increasing stress level which in turn heightens blood pressure and stimulates blood sugar in the body.

The Chairman, Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Benue State, Mr. Michael Vembe appealed to the state government to place pensioners suffering from diabetes and hypertension in the state on free medical treatment. Vembe who commended the organizers of the program recalled that about 350 retirees were benefiting from the free medical outreach and called for extension of the program to the 3 Senatorial Districts of the state so that more Pensioners could benefit from it.

Saudi Arabia Shock Argentina, Stun Messi In 2-1 Comeback Opener

A bold and brilliant Saudi Arabia pulled off one of the World Cup’s biggest shocks as they came from behind to stun two-time winners Argentina in a fantastic Group C opener in Lusail.

Ranked 51st in the world, Saudi Arabia could have been done and dusted in the first half as Lionel Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot before Argentina had three goals ruled out for offside.

But Saudi Arabia flipped the game on its head in a stunning 10-minute period after half-time, Saleh Al-Shehri levelling with a low effort and Salem Al Dawsari firing them ahead to spark pandemonium in the stands.

Having shown their ruthlessness at one end, the Green Falcons demonstrated a ruggedness at the other, holding a stellar Argentina front line at bay to secure only their fourth World Cup win in history and throw the group wide open.

Lionel Scaloni’s Argentina came into the tournament among the favourites, on the back of a 36-game unbeaten run that included winning the 2021 Copa America.

They now have it all to do to keep alive their hopes of a first global triumph since 1986 and give Messi a fitting ending to what is very likely his World Cup swansong.

They face Mexico on Saturday, while Saudi Arabia take on Poland.
