Environment Protection: Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency Opens ISO Certified Laboratory

0

Lagos State Government has recorded another first in its environmental protection drive and in setting pace for good governance with the establishment of the first ISO certified government-owned laboratory in Nigeria by the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, LASEPA.

Speaking during the official commissioning of the ultra-modern Laboratory located within the premises of LASEPA on Friday, the State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-olu said that the upgraded and re-equipped laboratory will further improve the quality of life for Lagosians.

Represented by the Commissioner for The Environment and Water Resources at the event, Mr. Tunji Bello, the Governor added that the event demonstrates his commitment to issues relating to the environment and the general well being of residents of the State.

According to him, the upgrading of LASEPA Laboratory became necessary as a result of the growing population of the state and the need to enhance the capacity of the Agency to effectively deliver on its core mandate of monitoring the environment for safety and sustainability.

The Governor said that he was pleased that the Laboratory earned the accreditation of the International Organization of Standardization for Quality Management System (ISO/IEC 9001) and Laboratory Management System (ISO/IEC 17025) which now makes LASEPA the first Government-owned environmental laboratory in Nigeria.

“This accreditation has given Lagos State a global recognition and acceptance as results generated from this laboratory are consistent and accurate through industry-standard protocols; and in line with best practices obtainable worldwide,” the Governor stated.

Sanwo-Olu urged the Management and Staff of LASEPA, particularly those that would be charged with the responsibility of operating this Laboratory to do so with utmost professional care and high sense of responsibility.

“The Management must also, always keep in mind that to whom much is given, much is expected in return. Our administration will continue to invest in projects that are consistent with our goal of ensuring a healthy, safe and Sustainable environment.

” As we strive to bring about a more resilient and environmentally sustainable State, we look forward to a more purpose driven partnership with local and international bodies, academic institutions, researchers and non-governmental organizations, ” Sanwo-Olu added.

Earlier, the Chairman, House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Hon. Rotimi Abiru said that the rate of human activities in all parts of the State and the huge population of residents of the State with different industries makes it compelling for Government to be deliberate about paying attention to the environment.

While saying that the initiative corroborates LASEPA’s resolve to ensure that all residents of the State have access to quality air to breath, Hon. Abiru appreciated the General Manager of the Agency and other environment-friendly stakeholders for championing the protection of the Lagos Environment.

Giving an overview of the upgraded Laboratory, the General Manager LASEPA, Dr. Dolapo Fasawe explained that the Laboratory formerly known as Laboratory Department, serving the then Ministry of Environment and Physical Planning was upgraded by Governor Sanwo-Olu.

According to her, the initiative of the ISO-certified laboratory, was in line with the present administration’s THEMES agenda which prioritizes Health and Environment, saying that the project resonates with LASEPA’s mandate of safeguarding the environmental quality of the state’s land, air and water resources.

She described the ISO-certified laboratory as a boost for the Agency’s mandate in the area of monitoring the activities of industrial, commercial and government entities in the state to ensure compliance to the environmental management laws of the state while also achieving sustainable development.

Fasawe revealed that she identified the need for an upgrade and standardization of the agency’s laboratory processes following her deployment to the agency as the General Manager and upon realization that the mandate of LASEPA borders around effective laboratory services.

In her words: “The laboratory complex was constructed thirty two years ago as a pollution control laboratory under the Governace of Raji Alagbe Rasaki, a retired brigadier general in the Nigerian Army who was the then military governor of Lagos State.

“However, during the Governor Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu regime, it metamorphosed into a full-fledged Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) laboratory with a strategic footprint, sectioned into seven different laboratory services”.

She noted that the agency would not have been able to achieve the upgrading and re-equipping of the laboratory without Governor Sanwo-Olu, who supported the initiative from incubation to completion, alongside the Commissioner for the Environment, some key members of the State Executive Council as well as some principal government officials.

The laboratory which was upgraded, through a carefully designed-work, now has a State-of-the-art environmental laboratory equipment and engineering processes according to International Standards Organisations (ISO) standards and best practices.

Ucl: Bassey Crashes Out With Ajax As Sanusi, Onyedika Progress

0

Bassey was on for 90 minutes against the Reds, but his presence at the back could not help Ajax’s leaky defence.

Nigerian defender, Calvin Bassey, and his Ajax teammates are officially out of this season’s UEFA Champions League following Wednesday’s 3-0 defeat in the hands of Liverpool.

Bassey was on for 90 minutes against the Reds, but his presence at the back could not help Ajax’s leaky defence that has now conceded 15 goals in five Champions League games this season.

In Wednesday’s tie in Amsterdam, Mohamed Sarah scored his sixth goal in his last four Champions League games with a 42nd-minute opener, before Darwin Nunez and Harvey Elliott added quick-fire second-half finishes to seal the victory.

With just three points from five games, Ajax will have to do with life in the Europa League.

For Bassey, who has no prior Champions League experience before now, the Europa League may be a more familiar terrain having gone all the way to the final last season with his former club, Rangers.

While Bassey has already kissed the Champions League bye, his Super Eagles teammates, Zaidu Sanusi and Raphael Onyedika are still very much in contention with FC Porto and Club Brugge, respectively.

Interestingly, both Sanusi and Onyedika were at opposing ends on Wednesday night at the Jan Breydel Stadion where Porto surprisingly breezed to a 4-0 win over the Belgian giants.

Sanusi featured for 77 minutes while Onyedika, who got a 55th yellow card was in action for 80 minutes before making way for Eder Balanta.

Despite the heavy defeat, Club Brugge will go into the last match day as table toppers in Group B with 10 points, while Porto is in a close second with nine points.

Both teams are through to the knockout phase regardless of what happens in their last games.

Porto will be home to Atletico Madrid for their last group fixture while Brugge are away to Bayer Leverkusen.

Both games are fixed for November 1.

Barca out

Elsewhere , Bayern Munich registered a 3-0 victory over Barcelona at Nou Camp

The victory by the Bavarian compounded the miserable day for Barcelona as they were eliminated from the Champions League at the group stage for a second successive season.

Inter’s 4-0 win against Viktoria Plzen earlier on Wednesday had already sealed Barca’s fate even before the kickoff against Bayern.

First-half goals from Sadio Mane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting were followed by a Benjamin Pavard strike with the last kick of the game.

Bayern were already through from Group C but confirmed themselves as group winners ahead of Inter with this win, with Barca dropping into the Europa League

With one matchday remaining in the group stage, 12 teams have secured qualification to the Round of 16 while there are four more places still up for grabs.

While Chelsea, Liverpool, Inter, PSG, Benfica, Porto, and Borussia Dortmund sealed their qualification after their matchday 5 games, Real Madrid, Manchester City, Napoli, Bayern Munich and Club Brugge sealed their berths after matchday 4.

Europa League: Uzoho Unable To Save Omonia, Ronaldo Seals Victory For United

0

The two EPL sides made it through to the next stage with a game to spare.

Super Eagles goalkeeper Francis Uzoho and his Cypriot club, Omonia Nicosia, have crashed out of the Europa League following a 2-0 defeat to table toppers, Real Sociedad.

Uzoho was retained in-between the sticks for Thursday’s encounter after his heroic performance against Manchester United at Old Trafford a fortnight ago. But the goalkeeper was unable to save his troubled club this time as their poor run in the Europa League extended to five games with no point.

Robert Navarro’s header from Asier Illarramendi’s cross went past Uzoho who was a bit slower to the pacy ball before the half time break.

Uzoho later conceded another goal from Brain Mendez at the hour mark.

In the other Group E tie, Cristiano Ronaldo sealed victory for Manchester United as they affirmed their qualification to the next round with a 3-0 victory over Sheriff.

Thursday’s victory meant United are through with a game to spare.

Erik Ten Hag’s men shot into the lead late in the first half through Diogo Dalot.

Second half goals from substitute Marcus Rashford and thereafter from Ronaldo helped the Red Devils narrow the gap between them and group leaders, Real Sociedad.

In the 10th minute of the game, United recorded their first chance on goal from Anthony’s shot but it was saved by Sheriff’s goalkeeper, JMaksym Koval

The next three minutes saw double missed chances from both Casemiro and Ronaldo who failed to direct their headers into the net.

While Casemiro’s header from a Christian Eriksen’s corner kick was blocked by Stjepan Radeljic, Ronaldo’s header flew an inch above the crossbar.

Ronaldo had a couple of other chances afterwards but was denied by Sheriff’s goalkeeper.

Two minutes before halftime, United finally broke the deadlock through Dalot who headed Eriken’s corner kick. It was the Portuguese defender’s debut goal in the European competition for United and first since January 2020.

At the hour mark, Ronaldo’s goal from Bruno Fernandez’s header was ruled as offside to the delight of the struggling visiting team.

Four minutes later, United doubled the lead with the effort of substitute players. Luke Shaw made his first touch in the night after coming in for Diogo Dalot.

He sent a cross to another substitute, Rashford who headed into the Sheriff’s net.

Ronaldo, after hitting his freekick on the wall, scored United’s third goal from a rebound to his header to Fernandez’s cross in the 81st minute.

Arsenal and PSV also progress

Despite suffering a 2-0 defeat to PSV Eindhoven, Arsenal have progressed to the next round of the Europa League.

However, the Gunners need victory in their last game to be assured of finishing top in their group.

Despite, seeing two goals on the night chalked off after VAR checks, PSV still ensured they got a decent result against Arsenal

The Dutch side corrected their mistakes in the second half with the introduction of Captain Luuk De Jong in the attacking position of the hosts.

The decision eventually paid off as De Jong set up Joey Veerman who fired past Aaron Ramsdale 10 minutes into the second half.

De Jong then doubled the lead for the Dutch side from a header to Cody Gakpo’s corner in the 63rd minute.

With Arsenal failing to get at least a point against PSV on Thursday, they would need to beat FC Zurich on the final match day to be sure of finishing top in their group.

NASA’s Insight Lander Detects Meteorite Hit On Mars

0

The InSight lander, perched on the surface of Mars since 2018, will run out of power and stop operations within four to eight weeks, NASA said on Thursday (Oct 27), even as scientists detailed a big meteorite strike it detected that gouged boulder-sized chunks of ice surprisingly close to the planet s equator.

Dust has been accumulating on solar panels that draw power for the US space agency s stationary lander, exacerbated by a dust storm, and has been depleting its batteries, planetary geophysicist Bruce Banerdt of NASA s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, InSight mission s principal investigator, told a briefing.

InSight’s mission, which has helped reveal the internal structure of Mars and its seismic activity, originally was planned for two years but was extended to four. When the power runs out, NASA will lose contact with InSight, Banerdt said.

InSight also established that Mars is seismically active, detecting 1,318 marsquakes.

Two research papers published in the journal Science detailed meteorite strikes on the Martian surface detected by InSight in September and December of last year.

Seismic waves triggered by the impacts revealed fresh details about the structure of the Martian crust, the planet s outer layer.
