Healthy Fruit Snacks Your Kids Will Love

0

The return of the school year means the return of busy mornings trying to throw lunches together, as well as busy weekend days fitting in all of your planned activities for you and the family. With these hectic schedules, it can be tough to find the best on-the-go snacks for your kids that are delicious and also use high-quality ingredients.

A great way to give your kids a boost of fiber and antioxidants on busy school days is by packing fruit snacks in their lunch. There’s just one problem: some brands of fruit snacks are full of added sugars and concerning additives.

Thankfully, there are plenty of brands dedicated to making healthy fruit snacks that still have a ton of flavor.

“These healthy fruit snacks are made with real fruits and veggies, which help to boost the fiber content to 2 grams for each roll,” says Rachel Fine, RDN registered dietitian and founder of To The Pointe Nutrition.

“These crispy apples are simple in regard to ingredients, which makes them more versatile in snack recipes (like trail mix and yogurt parfaits). The skin is left on during processing, which helps to keep the fiber intact,” says Fine. “Fiber further promotes steadier blood sugar levels (and ultimately, longer-lasting energy).”

It’s also nice to know you can consume this snack without any fat or sodium added. However, there isn’t any protein in this one so you may want to pair with a protein source like Greek yogurt.

“These organic fruit snacks are ideal for little snacks because they are void of synthetic colors and flavors,” says Trista Best, MPH, RD, LD at Balance One Supplements. “They are also made with organic ingredients, use real fruit juice, and are both gluten-free and vegan, making them options for a wider variety of kids.”

One pouch is also low in calories, so parents who want a sweet treat can enjoy this as a low-calorie snack.

“Black Forest makes their fruit snacks without high fructose corn syrup or synthetic colors and flavors, and these snacks are also made with real fruit juice, are non-GMO, and fair trade certified,” says Best. “Because of this, Black Forest’s fruit snacks can give parents and caregivers confidence that they are providing their little ones with a snack that benefits them and others.”

“These fruit bars are triple-layered, organic, non-GMO, vegan, gluten-free, and kosher,” says Lauren Manaker, MS, RDN, author of The First Time Mom’s Pregnancy Cookbook and Fueling Male Fertility. “They are also made with fruit and vegetable juices and purees instead of artificial ingredients.”

These fruit bars are so delicious that you’ll want to snack on one with your kids.

“That’s It bars are made with only fruit, meaning there are no added sugars, preservatives, or artificial ingredients,” says Manaker. “These bars are an easy way to enjoy fruit when on-the-go that is totally delicious too.”

This is an easy way to get your kids to eat their recommended servings of fruit, but if you need some tricks on how to give them enough veggies, try these 6 Ways to Introduce Your Kids to Vegetables.

“RIND snacks are made with real fruit-including the peel! These snacks are a fun way to sneak in some extra fiber and flavonoids in a chewy and convenient way,” says Manaker.

Flavonoids are extremely rich in antioxidants and can help you fight off chronic illnesses as you get older, so it’s never too early to start introducing more to your diet.

Just like the Bare Apple Chips, these banana chips are delicious and a great healthier alternative to other types of sweet treats or chips.

“Bare crunchy banana chips are like fruit snacks made from real fruit. Baked to perfection and with nothing artificial, these fruit snacks are always a winner when something sweet and crunchy is needed,” says Manaker.

These freeze dried snacks from Trader Joe’s are healthier than many types of dried fruit that add in tons of sugar or sodium.

“Freeze dried fruit can be just as nutritious as frozen or fresh, and it has a pretty long shelf life,” says Manaker. “We love adding these into my daughter’s lunchbox instead of fresh berries to avoid the risk of her getting a pile of mush once she opens up her meal.

This Jell-O Simply Good option offers you the same sweet treat but with only real fruit juice and no weird dyes or artificial flavors.

This one is still fairly high in sugars, so it may not be a daily snack. But for a healthier alternative to regular Jell-O, this Simply Good line is a helpful option.

South Africa To Bid For 2027 Fifa Women’s World Cup

outh Africa will bid for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, seeking to bring the event to Africa for the first time.

South Africa was also the first African nation to stage the men’s FIFA World Cup, in 2010.

The South African Football Association (SAFA) Executive Committee vowed to bid for the event at its latest meeting.

“The NEC [National Executive Committee] has resolved that we must bid to host the World Cup for women in 2027,” SAFA chief executive Tebogo Motlanthe said.

“We as administration will duly inform FIFA and then start the process of hosting the World Cup.”

The Netherlands, Belgium and Germany have already launched a joint bid for the competition and that will be among the South African proposal’s principle rivals.

A Scandinavian bid has been floated, but with Denmark, Norway, Finland and Sweden together bidding to host the 2025 European Championship the continental tournament could take precedence.

US Soccer has also indicated a desire to bid for either the 2027 or 2031 World Cups.

Next year’s tournament in Australia and New Zealand is due to be the first with 32 teams.

It will also leave Africa and South America as the only populated continents never to have staged the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

SAFA had been in the running for the 2023 World Cup but pulled out, claiming it wanted to focus on developing the women’s national league.

Expert Shares Tips for Safely Introducing Your Baby to Allergens

0

When it comes to food allergies, anyone can have them and they’re not dependent on family history. In addition, only about 2-3% of children under three years of age are found to have peanut, egg, and milk allergies, according to the Prevent Allergies Organization.

For first-time parents, or even parents who have been around the block a few times, introducing your baby to foods associated with allergens is a scary and overwhelming process. However, introducing these foods early on in life can significantly reduce the risk of developing certain food allergies by up to 80% in infants.

“Babies should be introduced to foods classically thought of as allergens around six months of age, [but] not before four months of age,” says Dr. Scott H. Sicherer, M.D., professor of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology, and the author of  The Complete Guide to Food Allergies in Adults and Children  “But over the last several years, the recommendations have been quite the opposite,” he explains.

It’s best for allergens to be introduced early on in a child’s life—among the normal foods typically fed to infants—as in some cases, it may even help prevent allergies in the future and/or reveal any severe reactions that are good to catch early on. Dr. Sicherer recommends parents stop, “treating foods possibly thought of as allergens differently than any other food.”

With all of this in mind, we asked the experts how to best help you understand and prepare for the day you start giving your baby foods that could contain allergens. These are the seven tips and tricks to properly, safely, and effectively introduce kids to allergens.

Step one, as we’ve discussed above, is to bring allergen foods into the equation as early as possible. After babies reach the four- to six-month range, you’ll be able to appropriately examine their reactions to food outside of breastfeeding and/or formula. But what foods does this include exactly?

Foods that may cause an allergic reaction or intolerance are those that are or contain milk, egg, wheat, soy/soybeans, peanut, tree nuts, fish (mainly shellfish), and sometimes even sesame seeds. “It’s OK for babies to be introduced to these things that are sort of allergens. And it might be even better to have it among the earlier foods they’re introduced to,” Dr. Sicherer says.

Multiple studies and reviews have found that introducing allergens to infants within the beginning of their first year (4-6 months) combats the development of allergies to food as the child grows up. It’s also possible that if the process is delayed for too long, then there’s a greater chance that a child can become allergic or more sensitive to common allergy-related foods.

“The introduction of peanut, for example, is generally recommended around six months of age, [and] not before four months,” Dr. Sicherer explains. But, he says, “for babies showing signs of allergy, it might actually be given earlier in that four to six months window of time.” Early attempts can allow parents to see any physical discomfort, and allergies can be spotted and then dealt with quickly (and possibly even before they reach a severe level).

This is one of the easiest tips to stick to. Don’t start giving your child any foods they’re not ready to consume yet. While you may be concerned about how your child will react to certain foods, “we have to take into consideration the baby’s ability to eat solids,” Dr. Sicherer explains.

“Some babies are ready for solids and they’re able to take those pureed foods and keep it fine,” he says, “others might dribble it out and not be ready yet.” Once infants begin to wean off of liquids as their only forms of nourishment—which can be past the six-month period in some cases—then it’s officially time to start introducing allergen foods.

Although, there are right ways and wrong ways to go about this first-time experience. You’re definitely not going to want to try giving a baby whole peanuts as their first go-around, because they can and will choke, Dr. Sicherer explains. Along with pieces of nuts, “peanut butter is a choking hazard for babies” he says.

As you feel out when your child becomes ready to take on solid foods, they should be presented in a safe matter. This is going to be foods that are in the form of purees, pastes, sauces, and (for some of the fast learners) tiny pieces that don’t require chewing.

While you’re starting to bring the long list of allergens into your child’s diet, you should be aware of what it looks like when they’re having an allergic reaction to a new food. This is especially crucial since there are both mild and severe reactions when it comes to food allergies.

“The biggest thing that a baby could have that would make you think they might have allergies is if they have skin rashes called eczema or atopic dermatitis,” Dr. Sicherer says. These rashes are itchy and might occur on a baby’s face, arms, legs, chest, and/or back.

While it’s believed that babies who experience eczema in their first few months of life may be more prone to allergy, Dr. Sicherer explains, “it doesn’t mean they are experiencing a food allergy, it just means that they’re someone that might go on to have a food allergy.”

Other common and more subtle allergy symptoms, according to Dr. Sicherer, are often going to be gut-related or visually obvious within a short time period after the baby eats these new foods. These can be anything from having diarrhea or blood in the stool, vomiting, hives, swelling, rashes, or even signs the baby isn’t growing enough.

On the more severe side, you’re going to see an extreme case of eczema or atopic dermatitis, or the child may have trouble breathing, cough or wheeze, or turn pale or blue in the face. However, this is not to sound the alarms! “Those are not going to be common for babies being introduced to these foods first off,” Dr. Sicherer says.

“If the baby doesn’t really show any signs of allergy—no eczema or anything else—there’s no strong reason to expect there’s going to be a problem,” he explains.

According to Main Street Pediatrics, many severe reactions will typically happen about 10-15 minutes after eating the food, but some mild reactions could take a few hours to begin to show up.

Now, if your infant is trying allergen foods for the first time and you are seeing any of these signs (mild or severe), immediately stop! Take a deep breath and treat these reactions or symptoms like you would any other condition—give your child (allergy) medication following the advice of your doctor and visit your doctor for assistance and an evaluation if needed.

Russia Banned From Euro 2024 Qualifying Draw

0

Russia will not take part in the draw for qualifying for Euro 2024, UEFA and the country’s football federation confirmed on Tuesday.

The Russian national team and Russian clubs were banned from international competitions earlier this year by UEFA following the invasion of Ukraine.

“All Russian teams are currently suspended following the decision of the UEFA Executive Committee of 28 February 2022 which has further been confirmed by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on 15 July 2022,” European football’s governing body said in a statement.

“Russia is therefore not included in the UEFA European Football Championship 2022-24 qualifying draw.”

Russia saw an appeal against the ban rejected by CAS in July.

“The Union is currently awaiting for the full text of the CAS decision, following the study of which a decision will be made on further steps,” the Russian Football Union said.

Russia were also banned from the upcoming World Cup in Qatar by FIFA.

The team had originally qualified for the European qualifying playoffs.

The Russian women’s side were also kicked out of this year’s Euro in England, with their place taken by Portugal.

The 2024 European Championship will be hosted by Germany, with the qualifying draw set for 9 October in Frankfurt.

Germany’s interior minister has also asked for Belarus to be banned from the tournament due to the country’s backing of Russia.

The Super Eagles’ camp at the Marriott Constantine hit the hundred per cent mark on Wednesday afternoon with the arrival of goalkeeper Francis Uzoho and defender Ebube Duru.

Nigeria champions Rivers’ United left-back Duru was called up following injuries to a number of players including defender Leon Balogun, and joined the team on Wednesday after returning from Liberia where the Pride of Rivers reached the penultimate stage of this year’s CAF Champions League group phase.

Team captain Ahmed Musa and forwards Henry Onyekuru and Samuel Chukwueze are the others knocked out by injuries.

Head Coach José Santos Peseiro has approved that the three-time African champions have a training game against Algeria’s ‘B’ squad on Saturday in order to see a number of new and returning players in action, ahead of the official game against the Fennecs (Algeria’s ‘A’ team) in Oran on Tuesday evening.

The match against Algeria’s ‘B’ squad will start at 5.30pm on Saturday while the official game on Tuesday will commence at 8pm.

Goalkeeper Maduka Okoye, defender Kevin Akpoguma, midfielder Wilfred Ndidi and forward Chidera Ejuke are returning to the squad after some period out, while midfielder Richard Onyedika and forward Godwin Saviour are joining up with the big boys for the first time.

Israel –based goalkeeper Adeleye Adebayo was in the squad for summer’s AFCON qualifying matches against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe but did not see action.

Tuesday’s clash will be only the second-ever friendly match between the Fennecs and the Super Eagles, with the two-time African champions edging a clash in Austria in October 2020 by the odd goal.

When both teams clashed in a 2006 FIFA World Cup qualifying match in Oran in September 2005, the Super Eagles ran out 5-2 winners.

Nations League Games Offer European Teams Last Chance To Prepare For World Cup

0

Holding the World Cup in the middle of the European season is having major consequences for clubs and coaches of national teams.

A hectic schedule of club football ahead of the World Cup is interrupted this week as national teams get a last chance to fine-tune their preparations before travelling to Qatar for the start of the tournament on Nov. 20

Holding the World Cup in the middle of the European season is having major consequences for clubs but also for coaches of national teams.

While domestic competitions bear the brunt of the upheaval to the calendar as they are forced to halt a week before the opening game in Qatar, that also means there will be next to no time for national squads to work together before beginning their World Cup campaigns.

Extra importance is therefore placed on events over the next week, as European sides complete the Uefa Nations League group stage while other contenders play friendly matches, including back-to-back games for Brazil on French soil against Ghana and Tunisia.

Reigning world champions France are preparing to defend the crown they won in Russia in 2018 while simultaneously trying to avoid being relegated from the top tier of the Nations League.

Les Bleus, the 2021 Nations League winners, host Austria on Thursday and visit Denmark on Sunday needing to beat both to be sure of remaining in League A.

But France coach Didier Deschamps has numerous issues, not least injuries to key players including Paul Pogba – he is recovering from a knee operation which has left him facing a race against time to be fit for Qatar.

“He will do everything to try to be fit as quickly as possible, despite the lack of time,” Deschamps told broadcaster TF1 on Sunday.

It is also too early to say if a dispute between Kylian Mbappe and the French Football Federation over image rights could impact squad morale, with the Paris Saint-Germain star refusing to take part in a photoshoot on Monday.

France’s latest squad features several new faces who are hoping to seize their chance to impress before final lists must be submitted to Fifa by Nov 13.

Likewise, England manager Gareth Southgate has handed an opportunity to Brentford forward Ivan Toney as the Euro 2020 runners-up play Italy and Germany in Nations League Group A3.

Like France, England suffered a series of poor results in June and so realistically need to win both of these games to avoid relegation to League B.

But Southgate will run the rule over an expanded 28-man squad with Qatar in mind.

“Part of the rationale is that we are very close to a World Cup and we feel, although our results were disappointing in the summer, we have picked on the basis of form and capability over a long period,” Southgate said last week.

Spain and Cristiano Ronaldo’s Portugal will warm up for the World Cup by meeting in Braga on next Tuesday in a game that could decide which of the Iberian neighbours advances to the Nations League Finals next June.

Meanwhile, fresh from signing a new four-year deal, Wales manager Robert Page has named Los Angeles FC’s Gareth Bale in his squad for games against Belgium and Poland.

Wales look set to be relegated from their Nations League group too, but that is not something that will concern them too much before they return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 1958.

Israeli Prime Minister Commends Restoration Of Full Diplomatic Ties With Turkey

0

Israel’s prime minister has met with Turkey’s president for the first time in 14 years, the latest sign of warming ties between the two regional powers after a long and bitter rift.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid said he met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Tuesday, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly, the largest annual gathering of world leaders now underway in New York.

In his meeting with Erdogan, Lapid said he “commended” the recent restoration of full diplomatic ties between the countries and the appointment this week of a new Israeli ambassador to Turkey.

The scene of Lapid, the Israeli caretaker prime minister until new elections in November, warmly greeting Erdogan could serve to bolster his diplomatic credentials as an alternative to Israel’s longtime former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Erdogan has shown a willingness for warmer ties since Netanyahu left office last year.

Over years of strained relations, Erdogan has been an outspoken critic of Israeli policy toward the Palestinians.

Israel, in turn, has objected to Turkey’s embrace of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, which rules the Gaza Strip.

Ballon d’Or Introduces Brazil’s Socrates Award For Players

0

The Ballon d’Or organisers said on Wednesday they are adding a humanitarian prize to this year’s ceremony named for Socrates the elegant Brazil midfielder, who also held a medical degree.

“The Socrates Prize will identify the best social initiative by committed champions,” said a statement from France Football magazine, which awards the Ballon d’Or.

These initiatives will include those promoting social integration, protection of the environment or aid to groups who are disadvantaged, threatened or victims of conflict. France Football said they chose Socrates, who died in 2011 aged 57, because of his commitment to a campaign he helped organise at his club, Corinthians in Sao Paulo, while Brazil was under a military dictatorship called “Corinthian Democracy”.

While they were warned to stop interfering in political affairs, the players escaped unpunished because of their high profile and because they focused on introducing democracy only at their club, insisting there was a vote on decisions on how the club was run.

The prize will be awarded by a jury that includes former Brazil and Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Rai, who is Socrates’ younger brother, as well as representatives of France Football and leaders of the Monaco-based Peace and Sport organisation.

“Socrates always believed in the power of sport to mobilise and transform society to make it more equal,” said Rai in a statement.

“He demonstrated this as a player through his fight for the re-democratisation of Brazil.

“Eleven years after his death, he remains the symbol of the champion committed to a more just world.”

The Ballon d’Or gala will be held in Paris on Oct 17.
