Official Saudi Arabian Oil Company Awards $40m Steel Pipes Contract To Homegrown Producer

0

Saudi Aramco has awarded a deal worth SR149.8 million ($40 million) to Saudi Steel Pipe Co. for the supply of oil and gas steel pipes.

Saudi Steel Pipe expects to see financial impact from its new order in the second and third quarters of 2023, it said in a bourse filing.

In May, the pipe producer signed a 10-month contract worth SR97 million with Saudi Aramco to supply the latter with oil and gas steel pipes.

Meanwhile, in June it won a contract worth SR58 million to supply oil giant Aramco with steel pipes for oil and gas extraction.

Amatuer Aviators: Forty-Five Teams Make Aircraft In All Shapes And Sizes

0

Amatuer aviators attempted to take to the skies in their homemade aircraft at Taiwan’s Taichung Harbor for Flugtag or “Flying Day”.

Forty-five teams made aircraft in all shapes and sizes, from butterflies to flying sea turtles and manta rays.

They launched their designs off a 6-meter-high ramp, attempting to fly as far as possible before crashing into the sea below.

The winning team reached a distance of 32.75 meters in an alien aircraft design, while the runner-up reached 12.42 meters.

The event was the first held in Taiwan and was watched by some 50-thousand people.

Flugtag got its start in 1992 in Austria and is now held in several cities each year.

Pottery: Saudi Heritage Authority Seeks To Preserve Practice In Madinah

0

Madinah is known for traditional handicrafts and pottery.

Pottery was initially used by people in everyday life as household items, from storage and cooking to transportation of goods.

But today, due to factory-produced household goods made of plastic, ceramic and aluminum, the ancient craft of pottery is slowly dying as people merely use it as souvenirs or decorative items.

The Saudi Heritage Authority is conducting courses and workshops to preserve pottery, and supporting family potters by displaying their products at events.

Tammam Mahmoud, one of the potters in the region, is striving hard to keep the art alive. “I’m proud to have inherited this profession from my father and grandfather more than 40 years ago. Despite the challenges and difficulties faced by potters, patience is helping them move forward,” said Mahmoud.

“Demand for pottery is declining due to the diversity of modern household utensils that have become widely accessible, as well as their different prices.

“Today, the pottery industry is limited to the technical and aesthetic aspects … such as souvenir gifts bought by tourists.”

Mahmoud said the clay used for pottery production is sourced from the valleys of Madinah following rains.

Sharing how a product takes shape, the artisan said the clay dough is prepared by hand before adding other natural materials to ensure it holds together.

The clay is then shaped using molds of various sizes to obtain the required design. The product is dried under the sun, before being baked in a traditional oven at a specific temperature to ensure its durability. It is then sent to the market for sale.

The Healthiest Rice You Can Eat

0

Rice has been one of the most produced and consumed grains worldwide for centuries, and for good reason. Rice contains fiber, carbohydrates, vitamins, minerals, and even some protein and healthy fat. It is a versatile grain that shows up everywhere and can be used in just about any dish. There are various types of rice based on differences like kernel size, aromatics, processing, and color.

This article will explore four different types of rice, white, brown, black, and red, based on color and what contribution they may or may not have on diets.

White Rice

The most common of all rice varieties, white rice is omnipresent in numerous spots across the grocery store, is often a core ingredient in meal kits, and makes an appearance on many popular restaurant menus. It’s an affordable food that soaks up flavor and pairs well with an array of dishes, from curries to sushi to jambalaya and everything in between. White rice is an enriched rice, which usually contains added iron, thiamin (vitamin B1), niacin (vitamin B3), and folic acid. It has been milled to remove not only the outer husk, but also the bran and germ layers of the kernel. It comes in at about 160 calories per ¼ cup dry.

Brown Rice

Brown Rice is one of the most recognized whole grains, alongside some of its cousins like oats, whole wheat, and quinoa, as it contains all three important parts of the grain: bran, endosperm, and germ. Interestingly enough, however, brown rice only has about 1.5 grams more fiber on average per ¼ cup dry serving compared to white rice, therefore not making the same fiber impact as other whole grains on the market do against their refined counterparts. Although the extra gram of fiber, which is mostly insoluble, might be helpful for digestive health by acting as a gentle laxative, the difference is not as striking as say, a sweetened refined cereal versus bran cereal.

Black Rice

Black Rice also known as purple, forbidden, or Emperor’s rice, has been popular among Eastern cultures for years but has been slower to make its entrance into the Western side of the globe. Black rice looks black in color when dry, but once it is cooked, it takes on a more purple hue. This heirloom rice has been studied for its concentration of anthocyanins, a flavonoid pigment, which may be associated with cardiovascular disease, cancer, and neurodegenerative disease protection. Black rice packs a greater hit on fiber and protein compared to brown rice, at about five grams protein and three grams fiber per ¼ cup dry serving. Black rice is best enjoyed in porridge, rice salads, or as fried rice.

Red Rice

Red Rice is a deeply red/honey-colored grain with a slightly savory and nutty flavor and a chewy texture. Some existing research has investigated red rice’s positive inhibitory effects on leukemia, cervical, and stomach cancer cells due to its proanthocyanidin content. Red rice also may exhibit antidiabetic effects as studied in a 2016 paper from the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry. The study found a 2.3- to 2.7-fold increase in basal glucose uptake (important for the proper regulation of blood sugars) by exposure to red rice bran extracts. Analyses of various types of rice also tend to find red rice to be higher in tocotrienols, a form of vitamin E, which is linked to neuroprotection, anti-cancer activity, and cholesterol-lowering qualities. Red rice works wonderfully in pilafs, salads, and soups.

So, which rice should you choose? Select a rice that suits your taste buds and is appropriate for certain dishes, making sure to view the ingredients to avoid added seasonings or salt so you can be in control of these additions in your own kitchen. If you’re open to any form of rice to complete your meal, snack, or dessert idea, reach for black rice as a top pick for its impressive fiber, protein, and possible chronic disease-fighting capability.

US, Canadian Warships Sail Through Taiwan Strait For 2nd Time In A Year

A US Navy warship and a Canadian frigate made a routine transit through the Taiwan Strait on Tuesday, the militaries of both nations said, at a time of heightened military tension between Beijing and Taipei.

The transit was the second in a month by a US Navy ship, and the second jointly by the United States and Canada in less than a year, since October 2021.

While China condemned the mission, saying its forces “warned” the ships, recent years have seen US warships, and occasionally those of allied nations such as Britain and Canada, routinely sail through the strait.

Such trips anger China, which claims Taiwan over the objections of the island’s democratically elected government.

“Cooperation like this represents the centerpiece of our approach to a secure and prosperous region,” the US Navy said in a statement.

The Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Higgins and the Royal Canadian Navy’s Halifax-class frigate Vancouver made the transit through a corridor in the strait that is beyond the territorial sea of any coastal state, it added.

Canadian Defense Minister Anita Anand said that as a Pacific nation, her country was deeply committed to upholding global stability and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.

“Today’s routine Taiwan Strait transit demonstrates our commitment to a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific,” she said in a statement.

Taiwan’s foreign ministry welcomed the action.

“This operation though the Taiwan Strait is, even more, a concrete demonstration of the resolute opposition of democratic allies to China’s expansion attempts,” it said.

The Eastern Theatre Command of China’s People’s Liberation Army said its forces monitored the ships and “warned them.”

“Theatre forces are always on high alert, resolutely counter all threats and provocations, and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity,” it said in a statement, employing its usual phrasing for such responses.

Taiwan’s defense ministry said the ships sailed north through the waterway and its forces observed the mission but “the situation was as normal.”

A visit to Taiwan early in August by US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi enraged China, which subsequently launched military drills near the island that have continued, although on a much reduced scale.

The narrow Taiwan Strait has been a frequent source of military tension since the defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with the communists, who established the People’s Republic of China.

James Webb Telescope Captures Ringed Neptune

0

The recently launched super space telescope James Webb has returned spectacular new imagery of Neptune.

The observatory’s infrared instruments highlight features not seen in such detail since the Voyager 2 probe flew past the planet in 1989.

These include the rings and dust bands that encircle the ice giant.

Scientists are also intrigued by the different cloud structures, which should tell them something novel about the workings of Neptune’s atmosphere.

Beyond the planet itself are seven of the giant’s 14 moons, the most significant of which is Triton.

It appears star-like in the Webb imagery.

That’s because Neptune is darkened in the telescope’s view by methane absorption at infrared wavelengths. Triton, on the other hand, reflects an average of 70% of the sunlight that strikes its icy surface. It’s very bright.

Ukraine War: Putin Orders Partial Mobilisation After Facing Setbacks

Russian President Vladimir Putin is calling up thousands of extra troops to fight in Ukraine after suffering setbacks on the battlefield.

Mr Putin said the partial mobilisation was necessary to ensure Russian territorial integrity.

Ukrainian president Volodymyr Zelensky said it showed Mr Putin wanted to drown Ukraine in blood – including that of his own soldiers.

The announcement applies to 300,000 military reservists.

They make up a fraction of the about 25 million Russian reservists – people who have done their military service which is compulsory in Russia.

The mobilisation is the first since World War II and comes after Ukraine made gains in a rapid counter-offensive this month, putting the Kremlin on the back foot.

Ukrainian forces have recaptured key towns and villages in the northern Kharkiv region and have made a slower, but still significant progress in the southern Kherson region. Russia still holds about a fifth of the country.

The decree is short on detail. It says nothing about a cap on numbers or about any exceptions, such as not recruiting students or conscripts.

Instead, these details are left to regional heads to decide how to meet quotas. In theory, the net could be cast far wider than the Kremlin has specified.

However Russian officials said it would announce “very soon” those who would be exempt from its partial mobilisation.

The partial call-up stops short of full conscription, a move that would have risked turning a public that has so far largely been in favour of the conflict against it.

In a televised address, Mr Putin also issued a thinly veiled he could use nuclear weapons.

He said the West was engaging in “nuclear blackmail” and that Moscow had “lots of weapons to reply”.

“When the territorial integrity of our country is threatened, we will certainly use all the means at our disposal to protect Russia and our people. It’s not a bluff,” he said.

Drone Footage Shows Collapsed Bridge After Taiwan Quake

0

Drone footage has shown a collapsed bridge damaged in a 6.8 earthquake that hit southeastern Taiwan.

Taiwan’s weather bureau said the epicentre was in Taitung County and followed a 6.4 magnitude temblor on Saturday evening in the same area, which caused no casualties.

Taiwan’s fire department said one person had died and 146 were injured by the quake.

The earthquake caused the Gaoliao Bridge in Hualien County to collapse. Several buildings were also damaged and train carriages were derailed.

The quake could be felt across Taiwan, the weather bureau said. Buildings shook briefly in the capital Taipei, and aftershocks have continued to jolt the island.

Cachalots Found Stranded On Australian Island

0

At least 14 cachalot were found dead after stranding on a beach of Australia’s King Island.

The cachalot is the largest of the toothed whales and the largest toothed predator.

Australian wildlife authorities are now investigating the deaths of 14 young cachalots that were found beached on an island off of the southeastern coast, officials said Tuesday.

A government Marine Conservation Program team traveled to the island Tuesday and was conducting necrop-sies of the whales to try to determine their cause of death.

Photos distributed by the department showed whales lying on their sides in shallow water on the rocky shore of the island.

Authorities were planning to conduct an aerial survey to determine whether there were any other whales in the area.

The department said it is not unusual for sperm whales to be sighted in Tasmania and the area where they were discovered on the beach was within their normal range and habitat.

Engineers Task Nigerian Govt. On Dams, Water Projects

0

The Nigerian Institution of Water Engineers NIWE has called for the application of data and technologies for effective integrated water resources management to maximise economic and social benefits for the country.

Director of Engineering in the Lower Benue Basin Development Authority in Makurdi, Benue State, Valerie Judit Omale, said the major challenge facing the Lower Benue River Basin Authority was funding.

She said this at the 5th NIWE International Water Conference  in Abuja, with the theme, “Application of Data and Technology for Effective Integrated Water Resource Management”, was organised by NIWE with support from the Federal Ministry of Water Resources, NiMet, NIHSA, UNESCO and other stakeholders.

“There are many projects we have started, especially the construction of Dams, control of irrigation projects, etc, trying to make sure that underground water is safe, sufficient and clean for the people.

“Before it would be completed, you would find out that resources appropriated don’t come every year and because of that, some projects are abandoned and some take so much time to be completed.

“The Ministry of Water Resources and the River Basins are working tirelessly to make sure Nigerians have safe and portable drinking water for their industrial and domestic use.

“We are calling for more funding for River Basins so that we will be able to produce enough water through the construction of Dams and stop the wastage of water,” Omale said.

The Nigerian Institution of Water Engineers is a division of the Nigerian Society of Engineers.

In line with its mandate on continuous professional development, the Institution holds International Water Conference annually on topical issues in the water sub-sector with a view to bring to front burner existing issues, problems, challenges and possible solutions or recommendations on the way forward.
