0

The Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International on Sunday inaugurated its 100 per cent free school in Ibeju-Lekki, Lagos State.

The free school project in Ibeju-Lekki, which is built under the auspices of the Inner City Mission for Children is the fourth in Lagos State and 10th in Nigeria.

Chief Sponsor of the project , Pastor Dr. Deola Phillips, said that the 100 per cent free school project was to ensure that the indigent children had access to proper education.

Pastor Phillips, who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Love World Incorporated said that education remained a core focus area for the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International.

She said that in Nigeria, the estimated number of out-of-school children remained unacceptably high, as reports had it that poverty was a major reason why millions of them had never seen the four walls of a school or had dropped out of school.

According to her, the Chris Oyakhilome Foundation International is at the forefront of protecting the right of every indigent child to education, as it is strongly believe that education can be the catalyst that breaks the cycle of poverty.

”By giving indigent children access to education and helping them learn relevant life skills, we are molding them to become profitable members of society which will, in turn, help us to build and sustain vibrant and economically stable communities.

”Today, we are set to commission the InnerCity Mission Primary School, Ibeju-Lekki which will provide a suitable place of learning for the children in this community and environs.

”This is a monumental step in building the foundation of a great future for them. This Primary School will equip boys and girls alike from communities in Ibeju-Lekki with necessary tools to help them live above poverty and deprivation.

”Through the unique curriculum we offer, they will be transformed to become children who would grow up to be adults who bring profit and not destruction to the society.

”Today’s child is tomorrow’s future. This school represents hope, opportunity, and is a message to every child who will be enrolled here that their dreams are possible,” she said.

She said that children in the community would no longer have to walk for long hours to get to the nearest school, as education had been brought right to their doorsteps and a new day had begun.

Director, Inner City Mission For Children thanked the host community for giving help in the selection process. She was also grateful to The President of Loveworld Incorporated, Pastor Chris Oyakhilome for spearheading the vision and keeping it alive.

Britain And The World Bid Adieu To Queen Elizabeth II

0

Britain said farewell to Queen Elizabeth II on Monday at a state funeral attended by world leaders, before a historic last ceremonial journey through the streets of London packed with sorrowful mourners.

Huge crowds gathered in near silence to watch as the queen’s flag-draped coffin, topped with the Imperial State Crown, her orb and sceptre, was carried slowly to a gun carriage from parliament’s Westminster Hall where it had lain in state since Wednesday.

To the tune of pipes and drums, the gun carriage — used at every state funeral since Queen Victoria’s in 1901 — was then drawn by 142 junior enlisted sailors in the Royal Navy to Westminster Abbey.

The thousand-year-old church’s tenor bell tolled 96 times at one-minute intervals — one for every year of her life — stopping a minute before the service began at 11:00 am (1000 GMT).

In his funeral sermon, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby praised the queen’s life of duty and service to the UK and Commonwealth.

“People of loving service are rare in any walk of life. Leaders of loving service are still rarer,” he told the 2,000 guests, who included US President Joe Biden and Japan’s reclusive Emperor Naruhito.

“But in all cases, those who serve will be loved and remembered,” the Anglican leader added, before the coffin was borne on another procession towards her final resting place in Windsor Castle, west of London.

The longest-serving monarch in British history died at Balmoral, her Scottish Highland retreat, on September 8 after a year of declining health.

Her eldest son and successor, King Charles III, dressed in ceremonial military uniform, followed the solemn processions, alongside his three siblings.

10 Things Named After King Charles III

0

Here are 10 people, places and things named in honour of Britain’s King Charles III.

He was known as Prince Charles, the Prince of Wales, before his accession to the throne on September 8.

Prince Charles Island

Uninhabited and extremely cold, the world’s 78th-biggest island is in the Nunavut territory of northern Canada. The low-lying island, with an area of 9,521 square kilometres (3,676 square miles), was first sighted by a tugboat in 1932 then rediscovered in 1948 by a Canadian air force photo squadron and named after the newly-born prince.

Princess Charlotte of Cambridge

The daughter of his eldest son Prince William was named Charlotte Elizabeth Diana after William’s parents and Queen Elizabeth II. She was born on May 2, 2015.

A 2011 change in the law on the order of succession meant she could not be overtaken in the line by her younger brother Prince Louis, born in 2018.

Prince of Wales Glacier

The Antarctic glacier, in the Queen Elizabeth Range named after his mother, flows north for around 18 kilometres. It was named by the 1961-1962 New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition.

Prince Charles Stream Tree Frog

Discovered in 2008 among specimens collected for a museum, hyloscirtus princecharlesi, a species of frog found in Ecuador, was named in honour of the prince in recognition of his work advocating rainforest conservation and the battle against deforestation.

Carbuncle Cup

The new king was famously outspoken on modern architecture and in 1984, when he described a proposed extension to London’s National Gallery as a “monstrous carbuncle”, the institution was forced to think again.

The Carbuncle Cup architecture prize is given by Building Design magazine to the ugliest building in Britain completed in the previous 12 months.

The Prince’s Trust

Charles founded the charity in 1976 with his £7,500 navy severance pay. The trust aims to build the confidence and motivation of disadvantaged youths by offering training, mentoring and grants. The trust had helped more than a million disadvantaged youngsters find a vocation.

Prince Charles Cinema

The only independent cinema in London’s Leicester Square, the home of British movie premieres, the PCC hosts regular singalong screenings of films such as “The Sound of Music”, “Grease” and “The Rocky Horror Picture Show”, with cinemagoers dressing up in character.

It opened as a theatre in 1962, before becoming a porn cinema, hosting Britain’s longest run of “Emmanuelle”.

HMS Prince of Wales

The aircraft carrier, launched in 2017, is identical to the HMS Queen Elizabeth. The pair are Britain’s biggest-ever warships.

The 65,000-tonne vessel can carry 36 F-35B fighter jets and four Merlin helicopters. It broke down in late August 2022, suffering significant damage to the propeller shaft and had to return to Portsmouth.

No. 2007 Prince of Wales

Britain’s most powerful steam locomotive is due to enter service in 2025.

The publicly-funded £6 million project is recreating the Gresley-class P2 Mikado, of which six were made in the 1930s.

Charles has been a big supporter of the project and the new locomotive was named to mark his 65th birthday.

Royal Trek, Nepal

The Royal Trek route was named after Charles and his entourage explored the route in 1980.

The trek from central Pokhara into the Annapurna region can take four or nine days and reaches up to 2,200 metres.

There is also a Charles Point lookout in southeast Nepal, with dramatic views of Mount Everest.

NFF May Go Ahead With Election Despite Court Order

0

With the release of the agenda for the Annual General Assembly (AGA), there are tacit indications that the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), may go ahead with its September 30 election, despite last Thursday’s court order forbidding the same.

An Abuja court last Thursday, forbade the NFF from holding the election, scheduled to take place in Benin, Edo State.

Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court 5, Abuja, had on Thursday, put the elections on hold while presiding over a matter in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1376/2022 between (1) Harrison Jalla (2) Chief Rumson Victor Baribote and (3) Austin Popo (4) The Registered trustees of the National Association of Nigeria Footballers (NANF) (trading under the name and style of Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria) (PFAN) VS (1) Nigeria Football Association (NFA) (trading under the name and style of the Nigeria Football Federation) (NFF) (2) Amaju Pinnick (3) Hon. Minister of Sports and Youth Development.

The plaintiff approached the court in mid-2021 after due process demanding an amendment to the NFF statutes 2010 for equal representation for all the five statutory bodies making up the NFF in terms of voting rights and representation on the board, its congress and sub/standing committees.

A group, named Nigeria Football Stakeholders, also wrote a threatening letter addressed to Sunday Dare and NFF President, Amaju Pinnick, warning that cancelling the elections is the only thing that can stop them from bombing the venue.

Despite all these, the NFF on Friday made public the agenda for the annual general assembly. It was gathered that a declaration of the annual general assembly has been convened and composed in compliance with the Statutes of the NFF.

Other items on the agenda are the presentation of the consolidated and revised balance sheet alongside the profit and loss statement of the NFF.

Vote on proposals for amendments to the statutes, the regulations governing the application of the Statutes and the standing orders of the general assembly and dissolution of the current executive committee.

The Sand Eagles were drawn alongside hosts Mozambique, Malawi and Morocco in Group A

The Super Sand Eagles of Nigeria have been placed in Group A with the hosts Mozambique, Malawi, and Morocco for the 21–30 October Beach Soccer Championship in Vilankulo, Mozambique.

Senegal, the reigning champion, will face off against Uganda, Madagascar, and Egypt in Group B.

CAF held the draw in Maputo, Mozambique’s capital, on Friday afternoon.

After missing the 2021 edition in Senegal because of an indefinite ban imposed on the team in 2019, this will be the Sand Eagles’ first opportunity to take part in a competitive match.

The Sand Eagles copped the suspension after a dismal 12-2 loss to Brazil during the 2019 FIFA Beach World Cup in Paraguay.

However, the two-time winners have returned to international competition this year and drew a bye in the qualifiers after Libya withdrew.

Having won the competition twice in 2007 and 2009, Sand Eagles will expect to mark their return with style as they challenge for the two slots available to African teams ahead of the 2023 FIFA Beach World Cup.

Fury, Joshua Bout 90% Certain – Warren

0

Tyson Fury’s long-awaited bout with British-Nigerian Anthony Joshua is 90 per cent done, according to Fury’s promoter Frank Warren, who has said that everyone involved in the ‘Battle of Britain’ wants it to happen.

Fury has made a series of U-turns in the last few months starting with his decision to retire following a sixth-round stoppage of Dillian Whyte in April, and originally sought a unification fight against Oleksandr Usyk who beat Joshua in Saudi Arabia last month to retain the world heavyweight titles.

However, the Ukrainian’s reluctance to fight until 2023 due to family concerns led Fury to offer Joshua the chance to face off for the WBC heavyweight belt.

On Tuesday, Joshua’s management team 258 revealed the terms of the fight had been agreed last week, only for the passing of Queen Elizabeth II to delay confirmation.

Warren says there is still work to be done on the bout which is currently projected to take place on December 3, but does not anticipate any issues stopping the Battle of Britain.

“The contracts are on their way,” Warren told talkSPORT. “I’m not going into great detail about this, because we saw what happened last time around with people making statements and so forth, and it all fell apart.

“This fight won’t be on until it’s signed, but everybody wants it to happen.

“The basis of the deal, 90 per cent of what counts, is okay, 10 per cent we’ve got to sort out. There aren’t any obstacles in the way, so hopefully very quickly we can get it over the line.”

“When you’re a promoter, you’re an optimist. That’s what you do. You’re in the business of trying to make events happen, so we’re all excited by it.

“I’m excited about it as a fight, because I always felt that Tyson has the beating of AJ, and now we’re going to find out if we get this over the line.”

While Fury is unbeaten in his 33 professional fights, winning 32, Joshua has suffered three defeats in his last five bouts.

Okonkwo: Rise Of U-17 World Cup Winner Before Fifa Ban

0

On Saturday, the Nigeria Football Federation announced, through a statement, that Nigerian striker Orji Okonkwo had been suspended from football for four years by FIFA, after being found guilty of a doping violation.

The 24-year-old, who plays for Serie A side Bologna, was initially handed the ban by Italy’s national anti-doping agency (Nado Italia) in June.

In February, Okonkwo – who is set to appeal – tested positive for the steroid clostebol during a loan spell at Cittadella.

Clostebol, which the player said he used to treat a problematic knee, is on the World Anti-Doping Code prohibited list.

FIFA’s disciplinary committee has now extended the Nado Italia sanctions to have “worldwide effect”, according to its chairperson Jorge Ivan Palacio.

“Consequently, the committee decided to extend the sanction imposed on the player by the Italian Nado on June 20, 2022,” read a FIFA statement.

“More specifically, the player is sanctioned with a four years suspension from all football-related activities in accordance with the decision.”

His ban has been backdated to February 25 and he will be free to play again on February 24 2026.

Rising profile

Okonkwo joined Bologna in northern Italy in August 2016, a year after he helped Nigeria, alongside Napoli’s Victor Osimhen and Samuel Chukwueze of Villarreal, win the 2015 U-17 World Cup.

He made 30 appearances, scoring three goals in 27 Serie A matches, for the side, including four starts.

Okonkwo had two notable loan spells at Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact and also spent time on loan at Italian second-tier clubs Brescia, Reggina and Cittadella.

At the international level, Okwonkwo started three games for Nigeria at the 2019 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations, scoring a goal against Zambia.

He starred as the West African nation clinched a fifth U-17 world title in Chile seven years ago, appearing in five games during the tournament and scoring in the 4-2 semi-final win over Mexico.

Monza Ends Juve’s Unbeaten Start In First Serie A Win

0

Monza won their first ever match in Serie A on Sunday after stunning 10-man Juventus 1-0 to pile more pressure on under-fire Massimiliano Allegri.

Christian Gytkjaer netted a historic goal 15 minutes from the end at the U-Power Stadium to move the club owned by Silvio Berlusconi off the bottom of the table and end Juve’s unbeaten start to the season.

Monza took their first three points of the campaign in their first match under Raffaele Palladino, who replaced sacked Giovanni Stroppa on Tuesday.

They are still in the relegation zone but a single point behind 17th-placed Verona, who were beaten 2-0 at Fiorentina.

Troubled Juve, who lost Angel Di Maria to a straight red card five minutes before half-time, sit in eighth after winning just two of their opening seven matches.

They are six points behind provisional league leaders Udinese following their 3-1 win over Inter Milan earlier on Sunday.
