Beautiful Nigeria: Oban Hills, Cross River State, Nigeria

0

The Oban Hills are a range of hills in Cross River State, Nigeria.

They lie within the Oban Hills Division of the Cross River National Park.

The hills are rugged, rising from 100 metres (330 ft) in the river valleys to over 1,000 metres (3,300 ft) in the mountains.

The soils are highly vulnerable to leaching and erosion where stripped of plant cover.

The rainy season lasts from March to November, with annual rainfall of over 3,500mm. The northern part is drained by the Cross river and its tributaries.

The southern parts are drained by the Calabar, Kwa and Korup rivers.

Exploring Fontvieille, Monaco

Port Fontvieille at sunset captured from "Le Rocher", Monaco.

Fontvieille is the southernmost ward located in the Principality of Monaco. This ward was constructed according to the design of the Italian architect Gianfranco Gilardini, because the ward almost entirely was constructed on artificially reclaimed land and thus represents one of the younger parts of the principality.

In order to combat the chronic land shortage in the extremely densely populated principality, the work was begun in 1966 to create new land in the Mediterranean Sea southwest of le rocher (Monaco City).

The first cornerstone for the new city quarter was laid in 1981 by the Prince Albert II. The existence of Fontvieille, and its many public works projects, relates substantially to former Prince of Monaco, Prince Rainier III’s reputation as the Builder Prince.

There were some plans made in 2009 for the ward to be extended with an aura on the west side of the rock, which should be completed by today. And even though this is not the most expensive piece of property a person can buy, yet, it is one of the most expensive properties around the world.

Withing the ward also is located the Moncao Heliport, which provides frequent links to Nice Airport in neighboring France, with connections to direct flights to New York, Dubai, London, and other important European destinations.

Monaco’s automobile museum, the Monaco Top Cars Collection, is located on the Terrasses de Fontvieille. This is interestingly alluring for those who are really rich.

Hurricane Fiona Rips Through Puerto Rico

0

Hurricane Fiona struck Puerto Rico’s southwest coast as it unleashed landslides, knocked the power grid out and ripped up asphalt from roads and flung the pieces around.

Hundreds of people were evacuated or rescued across the island as floodwaters rose swiftly. Rushing rivers of brown water enveloped cars, first floors and even an airport runway in the island’s southern region.

Forecasters said the storm threatened to dump “historic” levels of rain on Sunday and Monday, with up to 30 inches possible in eastern and southern Puerto Rico.

The storm washed away a bridge in the central mountain town of Utuado that police say was installed by the National Guard after Hurricane Maria hit in 2017.

Large landslides also were reported, with water rushing down big slabs of broken asphalt and into gullies.

U.S. President Joe Biden declared a state of emergency in the U.S. territory as the eye of the storm approached the island’s southwest corner.

6.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rocks Southeast Taiwan

0

A 6.8 magnitude earthquake hit the sparsely populated southeastern part of Taiwan on Sunday, the island’s weather bureau said, derailing train carriages, causing a convenience store to collapse and trapping hundreds on mountain roads.

The weather bureau said the epicentre was in Taitung county, and followed a 6.4 magnitude temblor on Saturday evening in the same area, which caused no casualties. read more

The U.S. Geological Survey measured Sunday’s quake at a magnitude 7.2 and at a depth of 10 km (six miles).

Taiwan’s fire department said one person had died and 146 were injured by the quake.

All four people were rescued from a building that collapsed in Yuli, while three people whose vehicles fell off a damaged bridge were rescued and taken to hospital.

The Taiwan Railways Administration said six carriages came off the rails at Dongli station in eastern Taiwan after part of the platform canopy collapsed, but the fire department said there were no injuries.

The quake could be felt across Taiwan, the weather bureau said. Buildings shook briefly in the capital Taipei, and aftershocks have continued to jolt the island.

Germany To Sign LNG Contracts In UAE

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz has signed contracts for liquefied natural gas (LNG) during his visit to the United Arab Emirates and this is coming from his deputy chancellor said.

This is as Germany looks for new partners to replace Russian energy imports.

In May, LNG talks between Germany and Qatar were fraught with differences over key conditions, including the duration of any contract.

German is acquiring LNG terminals as part of its efforts to diversify away from Russian gas.

Queen Elizabeth II: Archbishop Justin Welby Honors Late Monarch’s Faith In Jesus Christ At Westminster Abbey

0

The queen’s funeral has been held at Westminster Abbey where 2,000 guests, including presidents and prime ministers, paid their respects.

The service was broadcast live across the nation in churches and cathedrals, with millions more watching from around the world.

The sermon was delivered by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Most Rev. Justin Welby, who said in his sermon that the Queen had touched “a multitude of lives.”

He said few leaders had received the same outpouring of love and grief as witnessed in the days following the queen’s death.

He invited leaders in attendance to follow the queen’s example of servant leadership.

“The pattern for many leaders is to be exalted in life and forgotten after death,” the archbishop said.

“Her late majesty’s example was not set through her position or her ambition but through whom she followed.”

The archbishop went on to quote the queen’s address to the nation during the pandemic when she ended with words from a Vera Lynn song, “we will meet again.”

“We will all face the merciful judgement of God. We can all share the queen’s hope which in life and death inspired her servant leadership — service in life, hope in death,” the Archbishop continued.

“All who follow the queen’s example and inspiration of trust and faith in God can with her say, we will meet again.”

He expressed his sympathy with members of the royal family grieving “in the brightest spotlight” of the global public eye.

“May God heal their sorrow, may the gap left in their lives be marked with memories of joy and life,” he said.

The hymns “The Day Thou Gavest” and “The Lord’s My Shepherd” were sung by the congregation during the service.

The Dean of Westminster, the Very Rev. David Hoyle, opened the service with words of gratitude for the queen’s “long life of selfless service” and her “unswerving commitment to a high calling over so many years as Queen and head of the Commonwealth.”

“Praise God for her constant example of Christian faith and devotion,” he added.

Before the start of the service, Westminster Abbey’s tenor bell tolled every minute for 96 minutes — one for each year of the queen’s life.

The service was attended by church leaders from across the denominations including: Iain Greenshields, moderator of the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland; Shermara Fletcher, principal officer for Pentecostal and Charismatic Relations at Churches Together in England; Dame Sarah Mullally, bishop of London and dean of His Majesty’s Chapels Royal; Canon Helen Cameron, moderator of the Free Churches Group; Cardinal Vincent Nichols, Catholic Archbishop of Westminster; and Stephen Cottrell, Archbishop of York.

The choir sang Psalm 42:1-7 by composer and Master of the Queen’s Music, Judith Weir.

The service ended with a two-minute silence and the national anthem.

The queen’s coffin will be taken to Windsor Castle where she will be interred in her final resting place, St George’s Chapel, beside her beloved late husband Prince Philip.

Queen’s Funeral: Unseen Portrait Of Elizabeth II Unveiled

0

A previously unseen portrait of the Queen smiling brightly was released by Buckingham Palace on the eve of her funeral.

Taken by photographer Ranald Mackechnie in May before the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, the picture shows the late monarch dressed in blue at Windsor Castle.

The portrait of her beaming at the camera was released as the Queen Consort paid a televised tribute on Sunday evening, recalling her “wonderful blue eyes” and “unforgettable smile”.

As well as her favourite three-strand pearl necklace, in the portrait the Queen wore aquamarine and diamond clip brooches which were an 18th birthday present from her father, George VI, in 1944.

She wore the brooches when she addressed the nation on the 75th anniversary of VE Day in 2020 and for her televised speech on her Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

Mackechnie also took the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee portrait, which was released in June to mark the start of national celebrations for her 70-year reign, the longest of any British monarch.

Heirs Of Willem De Kooning To Auction Three Works Expected To Fetch $50 M

0

Three paintings from the collection of Willem de Kooning’s heirs will debut at auction this fall. The works are expected to fetch a collective $50 million at Sotheby’s.

The three large-scale works, each of which the abstract expressionist painter produced between the 1960s and the 1980s, will be offered during a contemporary art evening sale this November at the auction house’s New York headquarters.

Montauk II (1969), a blue, green and white-hued painting, one of five known paintings from the eponymous series created the same year will be offered during the sale. It carries an estimate of $10 million to $15 million.

In a statement, the artist’s grandchildren described being familiar with the work throughout their lives. “It was a window,” members of the the de Kooning family said. “We had the sea in the studio.”

Another untitled canvas produced in 1979 that features deKooning’s gestural style of painting is estimated at $30 million to $40 million. For the third work, The Hat Upstairs (1987), which features red and orange brush strokes against a white-ground, the New York sale will mark the first time it will be seen in a public venue. It is expected to fetch a price of $8 million to $12 million.

Lisa Dennison, Sotheby’s Americas chairman, described the three works as showcasing an “evolution” in de Kooning’s practice over the course of three decades. The artist completed each of the three paintings in his East Hampton studio at a home he designed and resided in from the 1960s up until his death in 1997.

9 Best Fruits To Eat For Breakfast To Get Your Morning Started

0

Breakfast is often called the most important meal of the day, and for good reason. As the name suggests, breakfast breaks the overnight fasting period. It replenishes your supply of glucose to boost your energy levels and alertness, while also providing other essential nutrients required for good health.

Loaded with fiber and important nutrients, fruit is a great addition to a balanced breakfast.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits—including oranges, grapefruits, lemons, and limes—are great sources of vitamin C, fiber, potassium, and phytonutrients, have anti-inflammatory and detoxification properties, and may improve heart health.

“Grapefruit in particular contains a high level of the flavonoid, naringenin, which is thought to promote a microbiome environment more favorable to leanness,” But grapefruit isn’t for everyone—the phytonutrients in grapefruit are known to affect medication dosages, so if you’re taking any pharmaceutical medications, be sure to check with your doctor first.

Apples

You know what they say, an apple a day keeps the doctor away. This may very well be true when you look into all the nutritional benefits of an apple. Packed with fiber, vitamin C, and antioxidants, apples are a great source of a flavanoid called quercetin, which has anti-viral and anti-bacterial properties and can boost the immune system.

Another perk of apples is that they’re so easy to take on the go, making them an ideal choice for those who are often in a rush in the mornings. “Fiber helps to keep us fuller for longer.

Apples pair well with many breakfast foods, from oatmeal to nut butter to yogurt.

Raspberries

Tiny, yet bursting with flavor, raspberries are an easy add-on to so many different types of breakfast, from smoothies, to oatmeal to yogurt or even nut-butter topped toast.

“Raspberries are small powerhouses of diverse phytonutrients, and because we eat the fruit whole (skin and seeds), the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory nutrients are easily obtained”.

A one-cup serving of raspberries contains about eight grams of fiber and 64 calories.

Banana

Wrapped up in their own natural packaging, bananas are one of the easiest fruits to slip in your bag and take on the go in the mornings.

“They also contain resistant starch, which is not digested by our bodies but rather is beneficial bacteria in your gut”.

Bananas also contain fiber, B vitamins, and minerals like potassium, manganese, and magnesium.

Avocado

If you’re an avocado toast devotee, you know this is one of the tastiest breakfast options around. But that may not be the only reason you find yourself eating it whenever you can—aside from being an absolute joy to the taste buds, avocado toast tends to leave many of us feeling really good too. Personally, I know that when I have avocado toast in the morning, it keeps me feeling satiated for hours.

“Avocados are a great fruit to consider having at breakfast because of their fiber content.” A half-cup serving of avocado contains about 5 grams of fiber, along with healthy fat (great for helping you feel full!), vitamins K, E, and C, and folate.

Blueberries

With nearly four grams of fiber in a one-cup serving, blueberries are a great fruit to eat in the morning. Blueberries come with more benefits than fiber—they also contain vitamin C, manganese, and “phytonutrients called polyphenols which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and can contribute to heart health and a reduction of other chronic diseases”.

Kiwi

Kiwi may not be as popular as apples and berries, but its great fruit to eat at breakfast, or really at any time of day. Turned off by the idea of peeling and slicing kiwi? Simply cut it in half and scoop out the fruit with a spoon.

Now, for the health benefits: kiwi is high in vitamin C, which can help boost immunity. It’s also high in fiber which can increase satiety, and it may help with digestion as well, according to experts.

Pomegranate Seeds

For a fruit that many people overlook, pomegranate seeds are loaded with nutritional benefits. “These ruby, jewel-like seeds are rich sources of antioxidant polyphenols called anthocyanins that can help protect replicating cells against free radical damage, and have been studied as means of preventing prostate, colon, lung and breast cancer.”

Beyond antioxidants, pomegranate is a solid source of vitamin C, vitamin K, potassium, fiber, and folate. For a tasty and nutritious breakfast, add a half-cup of pomegranate seeds to a bowl of yogurt or oatmeal.

Cantaloupe

Cantaloupe is super rich in vitamins A, C, potassium, and fiber. It’s also super high in water so it’s perfect in the morning if you don’t feel like drinking water. The suggested serving size for cantaloupe is one to two cups, but this fruit is so low in calories that you don’t need to worry about how much you eat, according to experts.
