Poland Asks Russia To Return Artwork Looted By Red Army

0

The Polish government has requested the return of a number of looted artworks from Russia.

The works – a selection of masterpieces by Italian painters between the 14th and 18th century – were stolen by the Red Army during World War II. They are now hung in the Pushkin State museum of Fine Arts in Moscow.

The paintings, which include “Two Saints” by Spinello Aretino and “Adoration of the Child” by Lorenzo di Credi, were stored in the collections of the Czartoryski family in Goluchow, at the Wilanow Palace, and in Poznan, Wroclaw and Lodz.

“Traces of hundreds of thousands of items lead to the Russian Federation and to the former Soviet republics,” said Piotr Glinski, the Polish Culture Minister, at a press conference.

“[We] will never stop searching for … cultural items that were looted.”

Why was Polish art looted in WWII?

It is estimated the 50 per cent of collections were looted from Polish museums during World War II, when the country was occupied by both the Nazis and the Soviets.

The Polish government has already issued 20 requests to Russia for the return of items and artefacts including archives from the Auschwitz death camp and paintings by Durer and Holbein. All so far have been ignored.

“Until this day (Russia’s) government has not reviewed any of the claims,” said Glinski.

Relations between Russia and the former Soviet satellite state have long been strained but hit a new low on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Poland has been a big backer of Kyiv and pushed for strong sanctions from within the EU.

Looted Polish treasures can be found in many countries including other former Eastern Bloc members. Since 2016 the Polish government has secured the return of 600 items, none of which were from Russia.

Theft hurts Nigeria’s oil output but crackdown intensifies

0

Nigeria is losing 470,000 barrels of crude oil per day to theft and pipeline vandalism, regulators say, and has now lost its status as Africa’s largest crude producer to Angola.

With the decline, Nigeria has dropped to fourth place among Africa’s largest crude-producing countries, according to the International Energy Agency’s latest oil market report released this week.

The problem is also making it more difficult for Nigeria to meet the 1.8 million barrels per day (bpd) production quota set by the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). And it’s further hurting government finances amid an economic downturn in Africa’s most populous nation.

Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari says the country’s revenue crisis “is caused mainly by the activities of unscrupulous citizens through the theft of our crude oil, a major contributor to our revenue base.”

Osun poll: Oyetola’s CPS twisting facts – Yiaga Africa

0

A civil society organisation under the aegis of Yiaga Africa has described as lies efforts to twist its report on the outcome of the governorship election in Ekiti and Osun States, saying it stood by that position.

The organisation was reacting to publications credited to Ismail Omipidan, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Gboyega Oyetola, alluding that the recently launched Yiaga Africa Election Result Analysis Dashboard report for the Ekiti and Osun governorship election “confirms” that the governor who contested on the platform of the All Progressives Congress won the election.

But Yiaga Africa in a statement issued on Friday by its Executive Director, Samson Itodo, said Omipidan was only twisting the facts.

He said, “Yiaga Africa stands by its position on the outcome of the 2022 Ekiti and Osun Governorship election

“We outrightly reject this assertion and categorically state that the ERAD report did not in any way suggest the winner or loser of the recently concluded June/July, Ekiti and Osun Governorship elections. Instead, the ERAD report highlighted certain shortcomings with the Independent National Electoral Commission’s upload of results to the INEC Results Viewing Portal and recommendations for improving the process ahead of the 2023 elections.

Ex-International Fuludu Explains PFAN’s Stand As Court Stops NFF Election

0

Former Super Eagles midfielder, Edema Fuludu, has explained why the Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria (PFAN) Task Force went to court to stop the elective congress of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) slated for September 30 in Benin City, Edo State.

Football-loving Nigerians were shocked yesterday following an order by Justice Inyang Ekwo of the Federal High Court 5, Abuja, which directed that the NFF’s September 30 Election be put on hold and that parties should maintain status quo. He adjourned further proceedings to October 31, 2022.

According to a statement by the chairman, PFAN Task Force, Harrison Jalla, Justice Inyang Ekwo gave the order at about 9.45 a.m. yesterday, while presiding over a matter in suit number FHC/ABJ/CS/1376/2022 between (1) Harrison Jalla, (2) Chief Rumson Victor Baribote, (3) Austin Popo, (4) The Registered trustees of the National Association of Nigerian Footballers (NANF) (Trading under the name and style of Professional Footballers Association of Nigeria)  (PFAN) VS (1) Nigeria Football Association (NFA) (Trading under the name and style of the Nigeria Football Federation) (NFF), (2) Amaju Pinnick, (3) Minister of Sports and Youth Development.

“The plaintiff approached the court in mid 2021 after due process, demanding an amendment to the NFF statutes 2010 for equal representation for all the five statutory bodies making up the Nigeria Football Federation in terms of voting rights and representation on the NFF board, its congress and Sub/Standing Committees.

“The court had earlier in the month of June 2022 hearing adjourned further proceedings in this matter to October 31, 2022. In between and in their usual characteristic manner of having no regards for the laws of the land, the defendants brazenly fixed election for September 30, 2022 in spite of an interlocutory application pending before the court. Consequently and ruling in an exparte application moved this morning by (1) Dr. Celsius Ukpong (2) Chief Rumson Victor Baribote and Fayeneniga Jacob, all representing the plaintiff, Justice Inyang Ekwo ordered the NFF September 30 Election to be put on hold and that parties should maintain status quo.” Jalla said.

Speaking yesterday, PFAN Task Force’s Secretary, Fuludu explained that failure by the various candidates aspiring to succeed Pinnick as president of the NFF to agree on their request for amendment of the statute after the election led to the court order.

He said: “For sometime now, we have been having meetings with the various candidates on the need to amend the statute. The plan is for any one that emerges president at the September 30 election to amend the statute as soon as he comes on board so that all stakeholders can have full representation in the NFF board.

“But nobody is willing to sign with us. In other words, we are not sure they will implement it after the election. Now, we have to ensure the statute is amended before we go into the election,” Fuludu stated.
