Chelsea Appoint Potter As New Manager To Take Over From Tuchel

Soccer Football – Premier League – West Ham United v Brighton & Hove Albion – London Stadium, London, Britain – August 21, 2022 Brighton & Hove Albion manager Graham Potter celebrates after the match Action

Chelsea have appointed Graham Potter as their new manager on a five-year contract, with the former Brighton & Hove Albion bosstaking over from the sacked Thomas Tuchel, the Premier League club announced on Thursday.

Chelsea dismissed Tuchel on Wednesday, a day after they suffered a shock 1-0 defeat away to Dinamo Zagreb in their opening match of the Champions League group stage.

The London club finished third in the Premier League last season but are sixth with 10 points this term after six games, having lost at Leeds United and Southampton.

“Chelsea is delighted to welcome Graham Potter as our new head coach, joining us on a five-year contract to bring his progressive football and innovative coaching to the club,” the club said in a statement.

Tuchel joined Chelsea after the sacking of Frank Lampard and helped the club win the Champions League in his first season. He also led them to the UEFA Super Cup and FIFA Club World Cup titles last season.

Potter takes over before their Premier League trip to Fulham on Saturday.

He had guided Brighton to fourth in the table this season with four wins, one defeat and a draw.

The 47-year-old was appointed by Brighton in May 2019 and has led the club to 15th, 16th and ninth-place finishes in his three seasons in charge. He managed Swansea City in the Championship before joining Brighton.

Super Eagles To Face Portugal In Big Friendly In Lisbon

Nigeria will for the first time face a Cristiano Ronaldo inspired team

In what will be the first ever clash of both teams at ‘A’ level, Nigeria and Portugal will clash in a friendly match in about two months from now.

The clash is coming on at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon on Thursday, 17th November which significantly almost marking the 28th anniversary of similar high profile friendly match that Nigeria had with England at the old Wembley Stadium.

It will be noted that Nigeria is having a Portuguese coach for the first time since venturing into international football in 1949. From all intentions, the match is final build up for Portugal towards the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

According an NFF media release, the Nigeria Football Federation and Federação Portuguesa de Futebol have signed a formal agreement for the Super Eagles and A Seleção to clash in a prestige senior team friendly at the Estádio José Alvalade in Lisbon on Thursday, 17th November.

Nigeria’s Super Eagles have won the Africa Cup of Nations on three occasions (as well as Olympic men’s football gold, silver and bronze) while Portugal won her first continental trophy (Euro Championship) in France in 2016, defeating host France 1-0 after extra time at the Stade de France. As hosts, A Seleção lost the Euro Championship final to Greece in 2004.

Already billed to play 2019 African champions Algeria in Oran on 27th September, the encounter with Portugal is another ace by the Amaju Pinnick administration, which has enabled high-end international friendlies for the Super Eagles and other Nigeria National Teams over the past eight years.

Before now, the Super Eagles have played against five-time world champions Brazil, Argentina, England, Ukraine, Senegal, Mexico, Serbia, Poland, Cameroon, Czech Republic, Tunisia, Ecuador, Democratic Republic of Congo and Mali.

The match with Portugal will be the first clash at senior men level for both countries, though last year summer, the Super Falcons and the Senior Women Team of Portugal fought out a thrilling 3-3 draw in the USWNT Summer Series in Houston, Texas, USA.

It can also be recalled that in 1989, Portugal’s U20 boys defeated Nigeria’s U20 boys 2-0 in the final of the FIFA World Youth Championship (now FIFA U20 World Cup finals) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

The Estádio José Alvalade is a natural grass facility that holds 50,000 spectators, and is home venue for Sporting Clube de Portugal. The facility is named after José Alvalade, the founder and first club member of Sporting CP who died in 1918. The stadium was opened in August 2003.

Portugal will be led by five-time Ballon d’Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo, easily one of the best footballers the world has ever seen, while the Super Eagles will be led at the fore by Italy-based forward Victor Osimhen, growing to be one of the most lethal strikers in world football.

The Chairman of House of Representatives Committee on Health Institutions, Rep. Tanko Sununu, has commended the Nigerian Institute of Medical Research (NIMR) on its infrastructure improvement and ground breaking researches in the health sector.

Sununu commended NIMR during an oversight visit of the committee to the institution in Lagos.

Sununu also said that the house would continue to promote policies that would support the usage of homegrown products.

He urged the management of NIMR to collaborate with government and non-governmental organisations to attract investment to further enhance the institution’s research capacity.

Also speaking, the Director-General of NIMR, Prof. Babatunde Salako, said that the institute was able to make significant improvement through improved capital.

Salako urged the government to promote policies that encouraged the use of homegrown solutions to combat diseases.

BRICS to Work Collectively in Global Food, Fuel Crisis

0

South Africa Speaker of the National Assembly, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, has emphasised the need for a collective solution from the Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) bloc to mitigate the global food, fuel and financial crisis.

“Food security and nutrition of our vulnerable populations are under threat, and legislatures of all BRICS nations, in particular, occupy a unique place to foster cooperation and people-people relations through public diplomacy, where there could be strategic direction of multilateralism and mutual development,” Mapisa-Nqakula said.

Mapisa-Nqakula was speaking at the 8th BRICS Parliamentary Forum (BRICS PF) virtual meeting held on Tuesday.

Mapisa-Nqakula led a multi-party Parliamentary delegation to the meeting hosted by the National People’s Congress of China, under the theme, ‘Leveraging the role of the legislature to foster high-quality BRICS partnership’.

The Speaker commended the 14th BRICS Summit Strategy on Food and Security Cooperation, which is aimed at stabilising global food production and contributing positively to global food security infrastructure.

She said through sustained parliamentary cooperation, BRICS can create responsive governments to address the current crises.

The BRICS Parliamentary Forum is constituted by the National Congress of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation, the Parliament of the Republic of India, the National People’s Congress of the People’s Republic of China, and the Parliament of the Republic of South Africa.

The forum was founded to strengthen and promote contacts at the leadership level of chambers, committees and groups of parliamentarians; perform inter-parliamentary exchanges and hold regular expert consultations, and create and develop new inter-parliamentary cooperation mechanisms.

Indonesian Students Protest Against Soaring Fuel Price

0

Hundreds of Indonesian students rallied in country’s capital on Thursday to protest sharp increases in fuel prices by the government.

The protesters, from several student organizations, gathered at Jakarta’s National Monument, which commemorates Indonesia’s struggle for independence. “We reject the fuel price hikes,” one of their banners read.

The government increased fuel prices by about 30% on Saturday after reducing some of the costly subsidies that have helped control inflation in the country. The hike — the first in eight years — raised the price of gasoline from 51 cents to 67 cents per liter and diesel fuel from 35 cents to 46 cents.

Protests have been held in several large cities since Monday by students, workers, farmers, fishermen and teachers.

Workers are planning more rallies and considering a national strike unless the increase is rescinded, the president of the Confederation of Indonesian Trade Unions, Said Iqbal, said Tuesday.

President Joko Widodo said the government was forced to raise fuel prices because the country’s energy subsidies had tripled this year to 502 trillion rupiah ($34 billion) as a result of rising global prices of oil and gas.

The government has subsidized fuel for decades in Indonesia, a vast archipelago nation of more than 270 million people.

Higher fuel prices are a politically sensitive issue that could trigger broader price hikes. In 1998, an increase in fuel prices sparked riots that helped topple longtime dictator Suharto.

Australia Enshrines 43% Greenhouse Gas Reduction Aim In Law

0

Australia’s Parliament on Thursday enshrined in law the government’s elevated target of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 43% below 2005 levels by the end of the decade.

The Senate passed legislation supporting the target in a vote of 37 to 30 even though several senators who supported it wanted a more ambitious 2030 target.

The center-left Labor Party government officially committed Australia to the 43% target after it came to power for the first time in nine years at May elections. But entrenching it in law has made it more difficult for any future government to reduce the target.

Climate Change and Energy Minister Chris Bowen said the Senate vote provided certainty to clean energy investors while strengthening transparency and accountability in Australia’s carbon reduction processes.

“The message to investors is that Australia is open for business,” Bowen told Parliament.

The conservative opposition party voted against the bill. The opposition has advocated since 2015 a target of reducing emissions by between 26% and 28%.

Independent senator David Pocock insisted on several amendments touching on transparency and accountability before he supported the bill.

These were soon passed by the House of Representatives, where the government holds a majority. The government holds only 26 of the 76 Senate seats.

Greens party senators supported the 43% ambition although their proposed amendments to increase the target to at least 75% and ban future Australian coal and gas projects were defeated.

UK To Cap Domestic Energy Prices, End Fracking Ban

0

British Prime Minister Liz Truss said Thursday that her government will cap domestic energy prices for homes and businesses to ease a cost-of-living crisis that has left people and businesses across the U.K. facing a bleak winter.

Truss also said she will approve more North Sea oil drilling and lift a ban on fracking in a bid to increase the U.K.’s domestic energy supply.

Fracking is a proven drilling technology used for extracting oil, natural gas, geothermal energy, or water from deep underground.

Truss told lawmakers in Parliament that the two-year “energy price guarantee” means average household bills will be no more than 2,500 pounds ($2,872) a year for heating and electricity.

Bills had been due to rise to 3,500 pounds ($4,000) pounds a year from October, triple the cost of a year ago. Bills are skyrocketing because of Russia’s attack on Ukraine and the economic aftershocks of COVID-19 and Brexit.

“We are supporting this country through this winter and next and tackling the root causes of high prices so we are never in the same position again,” Truss told lawmakers.

Business and public institutions like hospitals and schools will also get support, but for six months rather than two years.

The government says the cap will cut the U.K.’s soaring inflation rate by 4 to 5 percentage points. Inflation hit 10.1% in July and has been forecast to rise to 13% before the end of the year.

Wife of the Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria, Liang Jianchun, on Wednesday declared her love for Nigerian dance and arts.

Jianchun, during a visit to the Nike Art Gallery in Lagos, described those aspects of Nigerian culture as unique and beautiful.

According to her, Nigerians are accommodating, hospitable and friendly.

Jianchun was taken round the three-floor gallery with an indepth explanation of the works in the gallery.

She was taught dance styles peculiar to the three ethnic groups in Nigeria as she danced along with members of the consulate who accompanied her.

Jianchun was also taught the mode of greeting in Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo.

“Lagos is a big city with beautiful culture. The people and the weather are friendly; the culture is open to all; and Nigerians are hospitable.

“I love Nigerian colourful paintings and arts generally; they are beautiful. I can see the real fine arts from Nigerians; am really surprised and this is very impressive.

“I love Lagos and Nigeria, loaded with beautiful culture, I have been taught how to dance and I promise to practise more when I get home.

“The dances tell more of how unique Nigerian culture is. The dances also reveal the diversities.

“Nigeria is a beautiful place for tourists. I hope more Chinese nationals will come and visit Lagos and Nigeria in general,” she said

According to her, Nigeria and China have similarities in the areas of population, rich history and diversified cultures.

She said with improved collaboration, a brighter future was guaranteed for the two countries.

Jianchun noted that her favourite Nigerian cuisine was suya.

The Chief Executive Officer of Nike Art Gallery, Nike Okundaye, who was elated receiving Jianchun, said she was always ready to welcome more tourists from China.

Okundaye explained the value of arts and vital aspects of Nigerian culture.

She urged more Chinese nationals to consider Nigeria as the most suitable destination for tourists.

Malaysian, Indonesian Tourists Visit Lagos Historical Destinations

0

A team of Malaysian and Indonesian tourists on Tuesday visited tourism sites within Lagos to further market the destinations to intending tourists in their countries and attract investors.

The tourists, who had visited several African countries, plan to also visit Ghana and Liberia for same purposes soon.

Some of the destinations visited in Lagos are Terra Kulture, Nike Art Gallery, Lekki Conservation Centre, Freedom Park, National Museum and Makoko Seafood Market.

The tourists are Gan Hong, Lee Sei Loong, Wong Chong Wah from Malaysia; as well as Ong Bie Lian and Tjung Tjeng Tjin from Indonesia.

The head of the team, Lee Loong from Malaysia, said Nigeria was chosen as a place to visit because it was known as the most famous African country.

Loong described Nigeria as a beautiful country, rich in culture and history.

He said his visit to the country had partially changed his negative impression about the country as a destination without security, overcrowded and with the problem of traffic congestion.

He said that comparing Nigeria with countries across the world, it should not be seen as overcrowded and insecure.

” Nigeria is truly a place to be, but the country must work on rebranding its tourism sites.

“Adequate information needs to be provided at each tourism destination to further educate visiting tourists,” he said.

Loong shared his challenges visiting Nigeria, citing cumbersome process in acquiring Nigerian Visa, and at a high cost.

According to him, Nigerian visa was the most expensive to acquire, compared to other countries he had visited.

“It was such a difficult task for us to get our visas to come here; Nigeria needs to be more organised, good infrastructure should be put in place at tourism destinations.

” I look forward to coming back soon to witness the Eyo festival,” he said.

He said the team’s visit was taking it to nine African countries — Mauritania, Mali, Niger, Burkina Faso, Chad, Liberia, Ghana, Sierra Leone and Nigeria.

Loong said that at the end of the visits, they would have been knowledgeable enough to sell any destination in those countries to intending tourists across the globe.

Olugbenga Adebayo, Managing Director, Gadeshire Travels and Tours, who packaged the tour, revealed the challenges encountered.

Adebayo said he experienced problems with visa procurement for the tourists and avoidable protocols at various tourist destinations.

He advised that there should be more friendly policies, to encourage tour operators in marketing Nigeria as a tourism destination.

Adebiyi said there was also a need for the people at the local level to be educated on the essence of showing hospitality to tourists.

European Central Bank Joins US Fed In Outsized Rate Increase

0

The European Central Bank is set to join the U.S. Federal Reserve in making a jumbo interest rate hike Thursday as it tries to stamp out record inflation.

The meeting of the bank’s governing council is not about whether to raise rates for the 19 countries that use the euro currency, but by how much: between half a percentage point or three-quarters of a point, analysts say. The bank made its first increase in 11 years at its last meeting in July, raising rates by a half-point when it usually changes by only a quarter-point.

The ECB, which once predicted no rate increases at all this year, has torn up its road map in the face of record inflation of 9.1% last month, which has been driven by skyrocketing prices for natural gas and lasted much longer than expected. Inflation is far above the bank’s goal of 2% considered healthiest for the economy.

The central bank’s rationale for an increase of three-quarters of a point would be that “failing to act today would lead to larger moves and higher costs in the future,” said Frederik Ducrozet, head of macroeconomic research at Pictet Wealth Management.

The price of natural gas — used to generate electricity, heat homes and run factories — has jumped more than tenfold as Russia has throttled back deliveries as tensions mount over the war in Ukraine. European politicians call it blackmail over their support for Kyiv.

The resulting inflation is making everything from groceries to utility bills more expensive, creating a cost-of-living crisis that will only worsen as many economists predict the eurozone sinking into recession at the end of this year and into 2023.
