Estimated 3 Million IDPs To Participate In 2023

0

An estimated three million Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) would participate in the 2023 general elections, the Independent National Electoral Commission has said.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, stated this in Abuja at a stakeholders’ meeting on the 2022 Revised Framework and Regulations for Voting by IDPs.

He noted that the revised framework had taken into consideration several developments since the last review and validation in 2018.

According to the INEC boss, the policy was to ensure that no eligible Nigerian is left out of the electoral process on account of displacement, disability or other circumstances that may limit citizens’ participation in the electoral process.

He said, “One of such developments is the increased number of IDPs as a result of widespread insecurity nationwide.

“Secondly, to incorporate not only the displaced citizens arising from armed conflicts but also natural emergencies such as flooding.

“Thirdly, to align the framework with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2022, specifically Section 24(1) which empowers the Commission to ensure that, as far as practicable, no Nigerian is disenfranchised on account of displacement by emergencies. Finally, to align the framework with the national policy on internally displaced persons 2021.”

Yakubu stressed on the need for robust collaboration with stakeholders for voter education and sensitisation of IDPs.

He dismissed a claim by a coalition of civil society organisations that the commission had violated Section 19(1) of the 2022 Electoral Act, which spells out how voters’ registration should be displayed across the country.

Yakubu said INEC has not fixed a date for the activity in question, adding that the commission will do the needful when it is time.

Meanwhile, Yakubu has assured that the commission will display voter registers across the country once it completes the ongoing Automated Biometric Identification System to weed out all double/multiple as well as ineligible registrants.

He said, “We wish to assure Nigerians that the Commission will display the comprehensive register in all the 8,809 wards and 774 Local Government Areas/Area Councils nationwide as envisaged in Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2022.

“This will integrate fresh voters registered under the last CVR exercise into the existing register of over 84 million voters. The date will be announced as soon as the commission completes the ongoing Automated Biometric Identification System to weed out all double/multiple as well as ineligible registrants. We appeal to some of our friends in civil society to be guided accordingly.”

FG Freezes 600 Accounts, Seizes 249 Luxury Vehicles

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency seized no fewer than 286 assets and 600 bank accounts of drug barons between January 2021 and August 2022.

NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, who disclosed this in a document made available to correspondents on Tuesday, said the assets consisted of 249 exotic cars and 37 mansions.

The agency’s seizures came against the backdrop of the categorisation of Nigeria by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime as the transit point for “heroin and cocaine intended for European, East Asian, and North American markets.”

According to the UN agency, since 2004 “drug traffickers have been increasingly using West African countries, including Nigeria for smuggling large amounts of cocaine from South America into Europe and North America. The country has a relatively high rate of drug abuse due to the continued availability of illicitly manufactured and diverted pharmaceutical products containing narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances.”

Explaining the seizures by the agency in the last 20 months, Babafemi said 286 assets were confiscated and 600 bank accounts were frozen.

He stated that the assets of drug barons consisted of “249 exotic vehicles seized and 37 properties forfeited, all scattered across the country.”

The NDLEA also indicated that it seized N871.53m worth of illegal drug funds between January 2021 and August 2022.

It explained that N619.12m was recorded as final illegal drug funds forfeiture and N252.41m as interim forfeiture. The agency grouped this under its drug supply reduction effort where it revealed that it arrested 18,940 suspected drug traffickers from January 2021 to July 2022.

Under its drug supply reduction efforts, it stated, “Assets and financial investigation: Illicit drug funds that were investigated and seized include Final Forfeiture― (i.) One million, three hundred and nineteen thousand, four hundred dollars ($1,319,400) (ii.) One hundred and two thousand pounds (£102,000) (iii.) Fourteen million CFA Francs (CFA 14, 000, 000) ― and Interim forfeiture―Two hundred and fifty-two million, forty hundred and seven thousand, seven hundred and twenty-six-naira, twenty Kobo, (N252,407,726.20).”

The currencies were converted at the Central Bank of Nigeria’s official rate of September 2, 2022. At the time, one dollar was N424.55; one pound was N490.78, and one CFA was N0.64.

NGO Raises Awareness for Persons Living with Spinal Cord Injury

0

s observed every 5th September since 2016 by The  International Spinal Cord Society (ISCoS), with different slogans and themes that highlight the most current issues of concern for spinal cord injured individuals.

Conditions such as war, natural disasters, effects of climate change, poverty, hunger, drought and pandemic adversely affect all life on earth. Spinal cord injured individuals and other individuals with chronic health problems could be more affected by these conflicts than the healthy population.

This year, the ISCoS, in a bid to draw attention to the difficulties and problems faced by individuals with spinal cord injuries living in disadvantaged areas and conflict zones, defined the theme of 2022 SCI Day as, Raising awareness about the difficulties faced by SCI individuals in conflict zones and the slogan of 2022 SCI Day as, SCI in Conflicts and Disasters: Prepare and Prevent.

Experience has shown that persons with disabilities, especially wheelchair users, are often left behind or abandoned during evacuation in disasters and conflicts due to discrimination, lack of preparation and planning, as well as inaccessible facilities and services and transportation systems.

To ensure that PWDs are properly cared for when disasters occur, organisations of persons with disabilities, political authorities, public administrators and civil society organisations should be involve in planning strategies for tackling  disasters and conflicts.

Emergency plans should consider the fact that most spinal cord injured persons use wheelchairs and as such, their locations and emergency needs should be known and assessed before disaster strikes.

In addition, emergency responders, like the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), the police and civil defence, as well as state emergency response agencies, who are required to lift and transport people with spinal cord injuries, should receive appropriate training and have appropriate equipment for these tasks.

Evacuation, emergency transportation, sheltering and temporary rehabilitation facilities should be easily accessible by wheelchair to avoid unnecessary delays and additional injuries.

Rehabilitation is central to the eventual level of functionality of the spinal cord injured, irrespective of whether the injury was sustained prior to or due to conflicts and disasters.

Doping Ban: Nwokocha’s Lawyer Awaits Outcome Of Final Test

She may be victim of setup, says coach
Lawyer to Nigeria’s 2022 Commonwealth Games gold medallist, Grace Nwokocha, has told the athlete to wait for the outcome of the final test before she reacts to the provisional suspension slammed on her by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) for doping.

Nwokocha, who ran Nigeria’s anchor leg in the 4×100 winning women’s relay at Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games, was included in the list of athletes placed on provisional suspension for various doping offences.

According to the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU), Ostarine and Lingadrol were found in Nwokocha’s sample A urine collected on August 3, 2022, at the Commonwealth Games. She will now be under provisional suspension pending the conclusion of investigations by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).

The Guardian learnt yesterday that her lawyer has told the athlete to maintain sealed lips on issues concerning the doping scandal.

“She says her lawyer has advised that we wait until the outcome of the final test,” a source close to Nwokocha said in a chat with The Guardian yesterday.

MEANWHILE, a coach, who was part of the National Trials held in Benin City, Edo State, where athletes for Oregon 2022 World Championship and the Commonwealth Games were selected, has said that Grace Nwokocha may be victim of setup.

“Grace may have been set up by a bad friend, who is envious of her rising profile in athletics because the whole thing doesn’t make any sense to me. Grace was subjected to all kinds of tests, including Out and During competition dope tests before and after the National Trials in Benin City. I am suspecting foul play somewhere,” the coach stated.

The Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) has been notified of the development by the World Anti-doping agency as the confirmation of the B sample is still being awaited.

The Guardian recalls that in 2021, Nwokocha became the first Nigerian athlete to qualify for the Tokyo Olympics, running a 100 metres new personal best time of 11.09 seconds. She also won the 100 metres gold medal at the National Sports Festival held in Benin.

At the Tokyo Olympics, Nwokocha ran a new personal best of 11.00 seconds in her heat to qualify for the semifinals.

At Oregon 2022 World Championinship held in July, she competed in both the 100m and the 200m and reached the semifinals at both events. Nwokocha won the Women’s 100m title with a time of 11.03 seconds during the National Trials in Benin City in June.

Nagelsmann Hopes Bayern Wake Up Ahead Of Opening Champions League Game At Inter

0

Soccer Football – Champions League – Round of 16 Second Leg – Bayern Munich v FC Salzburg – Allianz Arena, Munich, Germany – March 8, 2022 Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann celebrates their fifth goal

Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann has blamed a lack of energy for his side’s stuttering Bundesliga form, bristling at suggestions the six-time Champions League winners are missing departed striker Robert Lewandowski.

After an explosive start to the season which saw them score 20 goals in their opening four competitive matches, two consecutive 1-1 draws against Borussia Moenchengladbach and Union Berlin see Bayern occupy an unfamiliar third spot in the table.

Bayern remains overwhelming favourites to win their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title this season, but the Champions League remains their true yardstick, after a disappointing quarter-final exit to Villarreal last season.

While Lewandowski’s replacement Sadio Mane has scored three goals in five Bundesliga matches since arriving in the summer, Nagelsmann said his side was lacking “energy” rather than the departed Pole and drew both games despite a “proliferation” of chances.

“Against Gladbach we had 31 shots on goal — I think that’s creative enough,” Nagelsmann said ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Inter Milan.

“How many goals have we scored? (Our goal difference) is plus 14, I think.”

‘Not awake in our heads’
Nagelsmann said his side would be able to break down the defence of last year’s Serie A champions Inter provided they recaptured the energy they brought in the opening league matches.

“Our energy level needs to be the same as before,” Nagelsmann said in reference to his team’s draw in the German capital.

“We were not 100 percent awake in our heads in certain situations.”

While the departed Lewandowski, who has scored five goals in four La Liga games since joining Barcelona, topped the Bundesliga scoring chart in six out of his eight seasons at the club, he also had a knack of scoring crucial goals in close games to give Bayern narrow victories.

Mane, who had a track record of scoring big goals in important matches for Liverpool including when his opening goal helped eliminate Bayern in the Reds’ Champions League-winning season in 2018-19, has so far only scored his goals in games when Munich has won by at least five goals.

Worryingly for Bayern, their opponents on Wednesday are also known for employing similar defensive tactics to Gladbach and Berlin.

“Interplay a bit differently (to Berlin),” Nagelsmann said, keeping his cards close to his chest.

“There are similarities, but I won’t go into that now otherwise they may do something different.”

‘They always play the same’
Former Juventus defender Matthijs de Ligt, who played three seasons in Serie A including Inter’s championship year, suggested the Nerazzurri may not have as much tactical flexibility as his manager expects.

“Inter are a difficult opponent. They have a team with a lot of experience and physically very strong players,” said de Ligt.

“They always play the same way, in a 3-5-2 system.”

Domestically, Inter’s much-vaunted defence has failed to keep pace with its reputation this season, with the 19-time Serie A winners having conceded eight goals in five games — the highest in the top 12 of the Italian tables.

Inter will welcome Bayern to the San Siro after a painful 3-2 defeat by bitter rivals and current Italian champions AC Milian, which manager Simone Inzaghi blamed on “a half-hour blackout in which we conceded twice”.

While Bayern has few injury woes, Inter will be missing their talismanic striker Romelu Lukaku, who is out with a thigh injury.

Inzaghi however welcomed the challenge, promising the three-times Champions League winners would showcase their European pedigree on the big stage.

“It will be a very difficult game for which we will prepare as best we can. We’re challenging one of the strongest teams in Europe, but we’re Inter and we will play like (Inter).”

Ucl: Thomas Tuchel Reveals Those Responsible For Chelsea’s 1-0 Defeat To Zagreb

0

Chelsea boss, Thomas Tuchel, has blamed himself and the entire team after their disappointing 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Zagred took the lead through Mislav Orsic in the first half to separate the two teams and ensure victory for the home side.

The German boss noted that it was an under-performance from his side and same story to what results have been for the Blues of lately, adding that “We had an OK start but we don’t finish our half-chances

We don’t feel it when the game is already there to be put to bed in the first 15 or 20 minutes, then we concede one counter-attack which is far too easy and from there we struggle,” he said to BT Sport.

“We are clearly not where we need to be and where we can be. It’s on me, it’s on us. We need to find a solution.

“At the moment, everything is missing.”

Laliga Announces €3bn Global Expansion Deal

0

LaLiga has announced a new joint venture to increase its presence in the Middle East, North Africa and the Indian subcontinent as the league aims to continue its international growth and compete with the Premier League.

The 15-year agreement with the Dubai-based company Galaxy Racer is expected to generate over €3 billion ($2.9 billion) in revenue, the league said in a statement on Tuesday.

The deal follows LaLiga’s partnership with Relevent Sports, signed in 2018, which was aimed at promoting the league in North America.

LaLiga and Galaxy Racer — which is an eSports and gaming firm founded in 2019 — will each hold a 50% stake in the new joint venture.

The league hopes to increase engagement with existing fans in the region, as well as working to target younger audiences under the age of 30.

“The LaLiga brand is powerful, but its potential remains untapped amongst Millenials and Gen Z in the MENA region,” Galaxy Racer CEO Paul Roy said in a statement.

LaLiga believes that while it is already the most popular international league in the region, there is significant room for growth.

Sources highlighted the league’s advantages over the Bundesliga — which had not been broadcast in the Middle East and North Africa for the last two years before a new deal was announced last week — and Serie A, which has limited distribution in the area.

LaLiga’s 15-year North American deal with Relevent included an agreement to work towards playing regular-season games in the United States, although a dispute with the Spanish football federation over the plan’s legality forced the league to put the scheme on hold.

Onyedika Reveals Reason For Joining Club Brugge Ahead Of Ac Milan

0

Nigeria midfielder Raphael Onyedika has revealed the reason behind his decision to join Club Brugge.

Onyedika was courted by Serie A champions, AC Milan but he opted for a move to Belgium.

Former European champions, Milan wanted him to replace Ivory Coast star Franck Kessie, who dumped them for Barcelona at the end of last season.

Club Brugge paid €10m to secure the services of the talented midfielder, who penned a five-year contract.

“I chose Club Brugge because they are the best team in Belgium and because they want to win everything,” Onyedika told Voetbal Nieuws.

“I also want to win everything, so that’s a good combination. I have also heard that Club Brugge has the best supporters in Belgium.”

The 21-year-old was named the best young player in Denmark last season.

Europa League: Ten Hag To Start Ronaldo, Antony, Maguire Against Real Sociedad

0

Manchester United manager, Erik ten Hag, is set to recall Cristiano Ronaldo and Harry Maguire to his starting XI when they face Real Sociedad on Thursday.

The Red Devils begin their Europa League campaign against the LaLiga side at Old Trafford.

Ronaldo and captain Maguire have not started under Ten Hag since the 4-0 thrashing at Brentford back on August 13.

Since then, United has won four consecutive matches to move up to fifth in the Premier League.

However, Ten Hag is ready to switch things up against Sociedad.

Ronaldo and Maguire are set to start, along with Victor Lindelof and Luke Shaw, as Ten Hag rotates his squad and gives players some much-needed game-time.

Ten Hag will rest the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane and Tyrell Malacia, ahead of their Premier League trip to Crystal Palace on Sunday.

One player likely to keep his place is Antony, given the Arsenal game was his first game for three weeks, after he went on strike at Ajax to force through his move to United.
