Champions League Is Back:  Group Stage Quick Reunions, Nightmare Groups And An All-British Drama

0

“The Chaaaaaaaampions…”

It’s that time of the year again when that famous anthem starts ringing around stadiums of the elite as the Champions League returns.

The group stage of this season’s competition gets under way this week and BBC Sport takes a look at some of the things to watch out for.

Haaland and Lewandowski’s quick reunions

Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski
Erling Haaland and Robert Lewandowski will face their former clubs in the group stage

Erling Haaland has taken to the Premier League like a duck to water and needed just four games to hit his first hat-trick for Manchester City when they came from behind to beat Crystal Palace last month.

The Norway international left Borussia Dortmund for City in the summer and the Champions League group-stage draw has ensured he has a quick reunion with his former side.

City’s first game is at Sevilla this week but next week Dortmund will be the visitors at Etihad Stadium.

Champions League success has eluded City but manager Pep Guardiola is hoping Haaland will continue his super record in European club competitions, having scored 27 goals in 25 appearances for Molde, Salzburg and Dortmund.

Like Haaland, former Bayern Munich striker Robert Lewandowski will also come up against the side he left this summer – in his case, Barcelona.

After hosting Czech side Viktoria Plzen on Wednesday, Lewandowski and Barcelona head to Munich on Tuesday, 13 September. Italian side Inter Milan complete what is comfortably the toughest group in this season’s competition.

Lewandowski scored 67 goals in the Champions League for Bayern, but former Liverpool striker Sadio Mane seems to be doing a pretty good job so far of filling the Poland forward’s boots, having scored five goals in seven appearances in German league and cup games.Champions League

England meets Scotland in Group A

One of the most eye-catching draws of the group stage was in Group A, where 2021-22 finalists Liverpool and Scottish side Rangers will face each other.

The two sides will meet for the first time in this season’s competition on 4 October at Anfield and then on 12 October at Ibrox.

Rangers’ return to the Champions League for the first time since 2010, while they and Celtic are back in it together for the first time since 2007.

Polish fans gets behind Ukraine’s Shakhtar

Shakhtar Donetsk will play their ‘home’ games at Legia Warsaw’s Stadion Wojska Polskiego in Poland

The Russian invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 led to the suspension of all football in the country, but the Ukrainian Premier League returned to action last month and Shakhtar Donetsk are participating in this season’s Champions League.

They have been drawn with the defending champions Real Madrid in Group D, along with RB Leipzig and Celtic.

Shakhtar will play their home games in Poland, at Legia Warsaw’s Stadion Wojska Polskiego, which is almost 1,000 miles away from Donetsk.

They begin their Champions League campaign at Leipzig in Germany on Tuesday night but their first ‘home’ game is against Celtic on Wednesday, 14 September, and they are being well backed by Polish fans after 80,000 tickets for the game were sold in one day .

Sparks to fly as PSG and Juve meet?

Paris St-Germain, among the favourites to win the Champions League, go up against Juventus.

Both sides will be wanting to get to the business end of the tournament and, like Haaland and Lewandowski, Juventus winger Angel di Maria will have an early reunion with his former side as he returns to the Parc des Princes on Tuesday.

Di Maria’s team-mate and one-time Manchester United target Adrien Rabiot also faces his former club.

Who are favourites to win?

According to data specialists Nielsen Gracenote, Real Madrid are favourites to win this season’s Champions League.

Gracenote’s Euro Club Index simulations give Real a 21% chance of lifting the trophy next May. Manchester City (20%), Liverpool (19%) and Bayern Munich (10%) are the other main contenders.

There is a 60% chance of Manchester City or one of last season’s two finalists, Real Madrid and Liverpool, winning this season’s competition.

Simon Gleave, head of sports analysis at Nielsen Gracenote, said: “With the competition not yet under way, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Liverpool already have more than a 90% chance of reaching this season’s Champions League knockout phase. Real Madrid’s chance of negotiating the group phase is as high as 98% before a ball is kicked.

“Along with that trio, Chelsea, Paris St-Germain, Atletico Madrid and Bayern Munich all have more than 80% chance of progressing to the knockout phase.”Gracenote

Exploring The White House, Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan

0

The White House is the official presidential office building of the President of the Republic of Kyrgyzstan, which is located in the capital city, Bishkek.

Built in 1985, it has a Neoclassical style, and it has seven floors. At the beginning it was housing the Headquarters of the Communist Party’s Central Committee, but with the independence it was obvious that it would be turned into more like a governmental building.

What is usual for official buildings, is having the Coat of Arms of the country in front of it, in this case the Crest of the Nation. It sits on top of the front of the building.

Also in front of the building there is a large bed of red flowers, which in turn at first were symbolizing the Soviet rule, but in this moment it is interpreted more like the country’s national flag color.

It is closed for the public, in 2005 during the Tulip Revolution, which were series of protests which overthrew the then President Askar Akayev and his government.

At the beginning the people started gathering in front of the White House, who clashed with the security forces, but managed to storm inside the governmental headquarters.

Nonetheless, something similar happened in 2010, but this time the protestors did not reach the building, at least 41 were killed. Still, this building is one of the Soviet era buildings which are very interesting to see when in Bishkek, which is definitely one of the country’s landmarks as well.

South Korea Typhoon: 20,000 Homes Left Without Power

0

Thousands of people were forced to evacuate in South Korea as Typhoon Hinnamnor made landfall in the country’s southern regions on Tuesday, unleashing fierce rains and winds that destroyed trees and roads, and left more than 20,000 homes without power.

A 25-year-old man went missing after falling into a rain swollen stream in the southern city of Ulsan, according to the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, which didn’t immediately report more casualties.

Fires were reported at a major steel plant operated by POSCO in the southern city of Pohang, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether they were caused by the storm.

Government officials have put the nation on alert about potential damages from flooding, landslides and tidal waves unleashed by Hinnamnor, which they said would be the most powerful storm to hit the country in years.

The storm came just weeks after capital Seoul and nearby regions were battered by heavy rainfall that unleashed flashfloods and killed at least 14 people.

Prime Minister Han Duk-soo had called for proactive efforts to evacuate residents in areas vulnerable to flooding, saying that Hinnamnor could end up being a “historically strong typhoon that we never experienced before.”

South Korea’s weather agency said Hinnamnor–packing heavy rains and winds of up to 144 kilometers (89 miles) per hour – was moving northeast toward open sea after grazing the southern resort island of Jeju and making landfall near the mainland port of Busan earlier on Tuesday.

The storm dumped more than 94 centimeters (37 inches) of rain in the central part of Jeju since Sunday, where winds once reached a maximum speed of 155 kph (96 mph).

The Safety Ministry said more than 3,400 people in the southern regions were forced to evacuate from their homes because of safety concerns and that officials were advising or ordering 14,000 more people to evacuate.

At least five homes and buildings were flooded or destroyed, and scores of roads were damaged. More than 600 schools nationwide were closed or converted to online classes. More than 250 flights and 70 ferry services were grounded while more than 66,000 fishing boats evacuated to ports.

China Logs Hottest August Since Records Began

0

China has logged its hottest August since records began, state media reported Tuesday, following an unusually intense summer heat wave that parched rivers, scorched crops and triggered isolated blackouts.

Southern China last month sweltered under what experts said may have been one of the worst heat waves in global history, with parts of Sichuan province and the megacity of Chongqing clocking a string of days well over 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

The average temperature nationwide was 22.4C in August, exceeding the norm by 1.2C, citing the country’s weather service.

Some 267 weather stations across the country matched or broke temperature records last month, the report said.

It was also China’s third-driest August on record, with average rainfall 23.1 percent lower than average.

“The average number of high-temperature days was abnormally high, and regional high-temperature processes are continuing to impact our country,” CCTV reported the weather service as saying.

Scientists say extreme weather like heat waves, droughts and flash floods is becoming more frequent and intense due to human-induced climate change.

Last month, temperatures as high as 45C prompted multiple Chinese provinces to impose power cuts as cities battled to cope with a surge in electricity demand partly driven by people cranking up the air conditioning.

Images from Chongqing showed a tributary of the mighty Yangtze river had almost run dry, a scene echoed further east where the waters of China’s largest freshwater lake also receded extensively.

July Data: Portugal Marks Highest Record Of Tourists

0

More than 1.8 million tourists stayed in accommodation spots across Portugal last month, with this number being slightly higher than the pre-pandemic levels.

According to the National Statistics Institute (INE), the number of visitors in July is 600,000 more than in the previous year when COVID-19 restrictions and limitations were still in place.

In addition, the number of arrivals in July was slightly about 1.78 million recorded in July of 2019, which was a record year for tourism.

The country’s tourism sector represented almost 15 per cent of gross domestic product before the pandemic that broke out in early 2020, leaving global travel at the limb.

Still, the total number of foreign visitors in the first seven months of the year was 8.1 million – about a million short of the same period in pre-pandemic levels.

Visitors from the neighbouring country, Spain, represented the largest share of total arrivals in July with 285,900 tourists, followed by the United Kingdom and the United States, which has recently marked a surge and became a main source of tourism to Portugal.

The positive impact in the tourism sector and the robust recovery have been evident due to Portugal’s location in Europe’s southern region, which is far away from the war in Ukraine, so people consider it a safe place. Still, the tourism sector faces the same challenges of staffing shortages and high inflation as most other European countries.

INE data previously revealed that Portugal had welcomed a total of 183,215 tourists from the United States, reaching a new record in the number of arrivals from this country.

In total, June saw a total of 181,869 American nationals visiting the country, which is the highest number since 2013, but this record was further broken in the following month, July, as 183,215 arrivals were recorded.

“The United States are discovering Portugal. Americans like what they see. Portugal has history and culture, privileged climate conditions, hospitality, and Portuguese people, in general, speak English,” Secretary general of the American Chamber of Commerce in Portugal (AmCham Portugal), Graça Didier, said.

According to another report from Portugal Resident, the US will become the main country of origin for tourists in several countries, such as the United Kingdom, Spain, France, and Germany, also including Portugal.

As the Barometer of American Companies located in Portugal has revealed, the US accounted for the fifth most significant source of tourism revenue, representing seven per cent of the total.

Osimhen Still On United Radar

0

Nigerian forward Victor Osimhen is still on Manchester United’s radar for the January transfer window as they remain determined to get their man, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

Osimhen who plays for Napoli was involved in one of the biggest transfer sagas of the 2022/23 summer transfer window and according to Express Sport, the transfer rumours are prepared to follow him into the winter transfer wndow.

Towards the close of the summer window, there was talk of a swap deal between United and Napoli involving the 23-year-old and Portuguese forward Cristiano Ronaldo, but the deal did not happen before Deadline Day.

Manchester United were able to sign six players following the arrival of new manager Erik ten Hag.

However, the Red Devils missed out on a host of other stars, including Osimhen, ahead of Thursday’s deadline, which means Ten Hag could be tempted to delve back into the transfer market in January.

United do not consider the central striker position adequately strengthened. Their failure to strengthen this position in the window has left Marcus Rashford, Cristiano Ronaldo, Anthony Martial and Anthony Elanga all battling for the position.

So Ten Hag could still go for Napoli striker Osimhen in January. Last month, reports suggested the Italian club wanted €100m plus Ronaldo in return for Osimhen. And Express Sport reports that the Red Devils may decide that it’s a price worth paying.

Osimhen enjoyed a stellar start to the 2022/23 season, scoring in both opening Serie A matches as Napoli walloped Hellas Verona and Monza via an aggregate score of 9-2.

Brought in from Lille in a club record €70m in 2020, the Nigeria international has experienced good fortunes in Italy.

Other potential January window pursuits for the Red Devils include Barcelona man Frenkie de Jong, PSV’s Cody Gakpo, and Juve’s Adrien Rabiot.

Modern Day Hermit Faces Eviction From Beachside Cave Home In Israel

0

In Herzliya in Israel, people have begun a petition to try to save a modern-day hermit from being thrown out of his unusual dwelling, built in a cave on the coast.

Nisim spent months living by the sea without a home, but then defied the humidity, salt and waves to build a Gaudi-like structure, which has been a local attraction for nearly 50 years.

But now the authorities want him to leave, saying he built without permission and is harming the environment.

Nisim insists he will not leave his life’s work until he dies.

Scotland’s Space Industry Working Towards Launching Satellites

0

Scotland’s space industry has committed to taking more actions to reduce its impact on the environment.

The newly-published Space Sustainability: A Roadmap for Scotland, external sets out plans to use alternatives to toxic fuels and develop reusable rockets.

The report said Scottish-based manufacturers were already working on “green propellants” for powering small rockets into space.

It said Edinburgh-headquartered Skyrora and Forres-based Orbex were repurposing waste from biodiesel production and using non-recyclable plastics to make fuel.

Skyrora is working towards launching satellites from a spaceport in Shetland, and Orbex from one in Sutherland.

The roadmap also includes a commitment to reduce space debris – fragments of broken old satellites and rockets littering Earth’s orbit.

University of Strathclyde has been working on microsatellites with sensors for detecting and analysing how they fragment during atmospheric re-entry.

Space Scotland’s Environmental Task Force, space strategy firm AstroAgency and Glasgow-based Optimat developed the strategy with funding from Scottish Enterprise.

Reach Out For Fight, Joshua Tells Tyson Fury

0

Anthony Joshua has said he would be ready to fight world champion, Tyson Fury in December 2022.

The British boxer noted this while reacting to a public challenge on Monday for a ‘Battle of Britain.’

Joshua had lost his title rematch in August, in Saudi Arabia to Ukraine’s champion, Oleksandr Usyk.

However, it looks like the 32-year-old is eager to return to the ring before the end of 2022.

Fury had said, “Anthony Joshua, I know you’ve just lost a fight to Usyk and you’re bout-less at the moment, and I’d like to give you an opportunity to fight me for the WBC heavyweight championship of the world and the lineal championship in the next few months.”

Joshua responded on his Instagram story, saying he was ready to fight if Fury was serious, and not just engaging in online discussion.

“I don’t do online discussions just for clout.

“So if you’re really about it, shout @258mgt (the boxer’s management company). I’ll be ready in December.”

Chinese Lockdown Traps Residents During Earthquake, Sparks Anger And Disbelief

0

Footage showing that some residents in the earthquake-hit Chinese city of Chengdu were stopped from fleeing their compounds due to a Covid lockdown has sparked anger and disbelief online.

Some in Chengdu say they were told to stay inside through a 6.6-magnitude earthquake on Monday that has killed at least 65 people.

Those that ran out say they found the exits shut due to Covid restrictions.

Chengdu, home to 21 million people, is currently under strict lockdown rules.

China has a so-called zero Covid-19 policy, meaning that lockdowns are routinely imposed in communities when cases of the virus are detected.

In some instances, apartment buildings where at least one person has tested positive for Covid have been designated “sealed areas” – where residents are forbidden from setting foot outside their homes whether or not they have the virus.

Videos shared on Douyin, China’s TikTok platform, show panicked residents behind chained gates, shouting to be let out.

In one, a man swears at security guard, rattling what appears to be his apartment gates and trying to open it, shouting: “Hurry up, open the door, it’s an earthquake!” In response, the guards say: “It’s over, the earthquake’s already over.”

This video showed residents behind gates asking to be let out

Another video claims to be an audio recording of a loudspeaker message that said: “Go back home and do not gather here, it’s just an earthquake. We [here in Sichuan] have a lot of experience [when it comes to earthquakes].”

One man told Newsmen he had run out of his 30-floor building after feeling the earthquake’s tremors. When he realised he was trapped, he raised complaints among the crowd gathered at the gates.

“Which one is more important? The lockdown or the earthquake?” Lu Siwei, a lawyer in Chengdu, had shouted.

He says his neighbour replied: “Do not incite emotions and do not talk politics.” After several heated rounds, Mr Lu says the man then physically assaulted him.

There have been no reports linking any fatalities from the quake to the restrictions on compounds, but such reports have sparked overwhelming criticism from those on microblogging site Weibo.

“It’s a joke that we have to discuss such a question,” said one commentator under a post from a local news site which quoted a lawyer saying citizens were “constitutionally” free to flee to safety. The post had received over 3.7 million views by Tuesday.

“I guess it’s fine if I die inside the building, at least I didn’t get infected,” said another comment sarcastically.

The Chengdu Health Commission later posted on its official WeChat account that “priority should be given to safeguarding the lives of the public in the event of earthquakes, fires, floods and other disasters”.
