Floods: Officials Struggle To Stop Pakistan’s Biggest Lake From Overflowing

0

Pakistani authorities are struggling to stop their biggest lake from bursting its banks after last-ditch attempts to lower water levels failed.

Manchar Lake, in Sindh province, is dangerously full after record monsoons that inundated a third of Pakistan.

Three breaches of the lake’s banks so far – two to protect areas nearby – have displaced over 100,000 people.

But it could still overflow and rescue teams are racing to evacuate many more people who remain at risk of drowning.

Floods in Pakistan have affected some 33 million people and killed at least 1,314, including 458 children, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Agency said.

Estimates suggest the floods have caused at least $10bn (£8.5bn) of damage.

Sindh province produces half of the country’s food supply, exacerbating fears of serious food shortages in a country already struggling with an economic crisis.

Pakistani Navy rescue people affected by floods in Khairpur Nathan Shah, Dadu district, Sindh province, Pakistan, 03 September 2022.

On Sunday, officials breached Manchar lake after it had flooded two rural towns. The hope was the move would prevent it from further bursting its banks and inundating more densely-populated areas.

The move affected an estimated 400 villages – a total of 135,000 people. The decision to deliberately flood some villages is a controversial one – the lake straddles two districts, Dadu and Jamshoro, both home to hundreds of thousands of people, and about 80% of the region is underwater.

Now residents near the lake are using government machinery to strengthen embankments to try to avoid a catastrophic, unplanned overspill.

“There are three breaches in the lake, two by plan, one is unplanned breach. It is our target that our big cities, towns, we can save them,” Sindh’s minister of irrigation Jam Khan Shoro told the BBC’s Newshour programme.

Villagers were warned to evacuate before the planned breaches. But local sources say not everyone was taken to safety in time – some didn’t want to leave their homes or livestock, a lifeline for many in rural communities, and there are few places for them to go.

Rwanda captain Ishimwe was responsible for the fall of three Nigerian wickets and she was named player of the match

Nigeria lost the opening game at the Under-19 Women’s Cricket World Cup qualifiers to Rwanda by nine runs on Saturday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the tournament is the first ever to be organised by the International Cricket Council (ICC) at the age-grade women’s level.

A total of nine teams are participating in the tournament in Botswana, with the top team gaining the sole ticket to the World Cup in South Africa in 2023.

In the first game at the BCA Cricket oval in Gaborone, Nigeria won the toss and opted to field first.

Great bowling performances from Henrietta Mbam with 4/11 in 3.3 overs and Lilian Ude’s 3/22 in 4 overs limited the Rwandan side to 79 overs all out in 17.3 overs.

Nigeria came in to bat in the second innings, but her run rate was majorly halted by Gisele Ishimwe of Rwanda.

Ishimwe was responsible for the fall of three wickets, alongside teammate Belise Murekatete with three wickets as well.

Nigeria went on to score 70 runs all out in 16.5 overs, for Rwanda to win by nine runs.

Ishimwe, who is also the captain of the Rwandan team, was awarded Player of the Match with bowling figures of 3/15 in four overs as well as six runs off eight balls.

US Open: Nadal, Medvedev Knocked Out

The top two seeded men were knocked out on Monday.

The dream of a 23rd Grand Slam title for Rafael Nadal was extinguished on Arthur Ashe on Tuesday morning by AmericanFrancis Tiafoe 4-6, 6-4, 4-6, 3-6 in three hours and 34 minutes.

Nadal’s loss followed the ouster of the No.1 seed Daniil Medvedev by Nick Kyrgios in four sets. Thus the two top seeds were knocked out on Monday.

Nadal, after his ouster, took to Instagram to say, “Bye NYC, always nice to be here and thanks for all the support. See you next year!,” Nadal revealed.

In the post-match press conference, Nadal was non-commital about continuation on tour for the rest of the 2022 season.

He said, “I going to try to be ready mentally.

“When I feel that I will be ready to compete again, I will be there,” he added.

But there seems to be an American renaissance at Flushing Meadows as Tiafoe’s victory comes on the heels of that of another American, Coco Gauff, who is also into the quarter final for the women’s event.

Nigeria Walked Over At ITTF World Championships In Algiers

0

Nigeria failed to show up for the qualifying event for the 2023 ITTF World Team Championships after the men and women teams were walked over at the ongoing 2022 ITTF Africa Senior Championships taking place in Algiers.

Before the commencement of the tournament at the weekend, Nigeria has been listed among the 28nations expected to compete for the continental slots in Algiers but from the outcome of the event, Nigeria women’s team were withdrew at the last minutes while the men’s team arrived late for the group matches to miss out from making it to the knockout stage.

The three players that made it to Algiers were Europe-based Quadri Aruna and Olajide Omotayo while the only home-based player Taiwo Mati that made the trip to Algiers late on Friday also arrived late for the matches.

Despite assurance from the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) that the men’s team would arrive for their group matches against Tunisia and Cote d’Ivoire, the trio of Aruna, Omotayo and Mati failed to make it on time for the matches and they were walked over to give Cote d’Ivoire and Tunisia passage to the quarterfinal stage.

According to the African Table Tennis Federation (ITTF Africa), the tournament serves as the continental qualifiers for the 2023 World Team Championships in South Africa being the second time Africa will be staging the global championship after Egypt hosted the 1939 edition.

Meanwhile, the President of NTTF Ishaku Tikon has lamented the inability of the team to be part of the tournament over paucity of funds, while hoping the trio of Aruna, Omotayo and Mati would make their presence count in the doubles and singles events.

Egypt yesterday retained the titles in the men and women team events after beating Algeria and Tunisia in the final in the absence of their arch-rival Nigeria.

Teams taking part in the seven-day championships include host Algeria, Cameroon, Ethiopia, Morocco, Libya, Mauritania, Congo DRC, Egypt, South Africa, Angola, Cote d’Ivoire, Ghana, Togo, Tunisia, Zambia, Uganda, Mauritius, and the Benin Republic.

Naira falls to lowest at official market on dollar scarcity

0

Nigeria’s currency, Naira, fell to its lowest at N434.7 per dollar at the Investors and Exporters (I&E), the country’s official foreign exchange market window.

After trading on Monday, Naira depreciated by 0.75 percent to N434.75/$ compared to N431.50 quoted on Friday at the official market, data from the FMDQ indicated.

Naira depreciation has been attributed to dollar shortage as Nigeria continues to struggle with diversifying and improving foreign exchange inflows.

With the current rate, Naira has depreciated by 2.93 percent from N422 quoted on the first trading day this year.

Most foreign exchange dealers who participated at the FX auction on Monday maintained bids between N425.00 (low) and N437.50 (high) per dollar.

At the parallel market, popularly called the black market, Naira stood at N702 par dollar after trading on Monday.

The local currency has depreciated by 19.51 percent at the black market from N565/$ at the beginning of the year.

INEC To Publish Comprehensive List Of Registered Voters Soon — Yakubu

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says it is working towards publishing a comprehensive list of registered voters in Nigeria, ahead of the 2023 poll.

The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this at the stakeholders’ validation meeting for the 2022 revised framework and regulations for voting by Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Abuja on Tuesday.

Yakubu said that the list would integrate the fresh voters registered at the just concluded Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) to the existing register of over 84 million voters.

He faulted claim by a section of the civil society groups that INEC was not willing to display the register.

“At a media briefing yesterday, the commission was accused of failure to display the voters’ register as provided by Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act 2022. This claim is incorrect.

“What the commission displayed for claims and objections in our local government area offices nationwide for a period of one week, from Aug. 15 to Aug. 21, was not the entire register of voters.

“It was the list of fresh registrants at the end of the fourth and last quarter of the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise covering the period from April 11 to July 31.

“This has been the practice for several years,” he said.

Yakubu said that the commission had displayed the register three times: from Sept. 24 to Sept. 30, 2021 (First Quarter), Dec. 24 to Dec. 30, 2021 (Second Quarter) and March 26 to – April 1 2022 (Third Quarter).

He said that a comprehensive schedule of the CVR and the display of the register was shared with stakeholders at the commission’s quarterly meeting just before the inception of the exercise in June 2021.

“We wish to assure Nigerians that the commission will display the comprehensive register in all the 8,809 wards and 774 local government areas/area councils nationwide as envisaged in Section 19(1) of the Electoral Act, 2022.

“This will integrate fresh voters registered under the last CVR into the existing register of over 84 million voters.

“The date will be announced as soon the commission completes the ongoing Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to weed out all double/multiple as well as ineligible registrants.

“We appeal to some of our friends in civil society organisations to be guided accordingly,” Yakubu said.

FG Suspends Proposed Tax On Phone Calls

0

The federal government has suspended the proposed new tax on phone calls and other telecommunications services.

The Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, Isa Pantami, announced this on Monday. He said the planned excise duty on telecommunication services has been suspended.

Pantami spoke at the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Committee on Excise Duty for the Digital Economy Sector in Abuja.

He said the sector was already overburdened by excessive and repeated taxes.

The federal government had earlier said it would begin implementing the proposed excise taxes on telecommunications and beverage services in 2023.

The Minister of Finance, Budget, and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, announced that the government was preparing to implement a 5% excise tax on telecommunications services, which would raise total on phone services to 12.5%. The sector has an existing 7.5 per cent on its services.

However, Pantami opposed the new tax, which would increase the cost of telecommunications services in the country.

He said the ministry was not consulted and criticized the timing of the plan.

Death toll increases to six in Lekki building collapse

0

Another body has been excavated in the ongoing rescue mission from the seven-storey building that collapsed on Sunday in Oniru, Lagos.

This raises the death toll to six as rescue workers had earlier recovered five bodies from the rubbles.

Ibrahim Farinloye, the south-west zonal coordinator of National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the latest development.

The developers and other personnel behind the building project have been arrested by the Lagos State Government.

The Lagos State Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Idris Salako, had resigned from the state executive council as a result to the incident and others before it.

Within Frieze Seoul’s Early Hours, Galleries Report Sales Of Paintings Worth Millions Of Dollars

0

At long last, Frieze Seoul launched its first edition this week, and on the fair’s first day, some participating galleries said they’d sold a few works for more than $1 million. By that measure, the fair has been a success for at least a few of the world’s biggest galleries.

Most of the other sales that galleries reported were much lower than $1 million, however, which means that Frieze Seoul is not commanding purchases on the order of another Asian competitor, Art Basel Hong Kong, where prices can sometimes exceed $10 million. Still, galleries said they’d sold to Korean and Chinese collectors, which could mean that interest in the powerful art scenes of those two countries is strong.

It’s worth reminding that it is difficult to independently verify the sales that gallery report as having taken place at art fairs, and that in some cases these purchases are often conducted in advance and only announced later on, once events kick off. Frieze runs through Monday, which could mean more big transactions are still to come.
