The Louisiana State University (LSU), Los Angeles in the United States of America (USA) has awarded a fully funded scholarship to the four best graduating students of chemical engineering from the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) in Ogbomoso.

Principal assistant registrar, public and alumni relations unit of LAUTECH,  Olalekan Fadeyi, disclosed this on Tuesday, August 23 in Ogbomoso, Oyo State.

Fadeyi revealed that the four students who are Otusanya Gabriel Tobi, Oluwole Titilayo Deborah, Dauda, Monsuru Olatunji, and Balogun Toyeeb Olamide were directly admitted into PhD programme with their first degrees into Louisiana University.

The LAUTECH’s spokesman explained that it was the first time that four graduates of chemical engineering of the institution were admitted into a PhD programme in the same academic session.

“Based on the previous interactions between LAUTECH and LSU, the Department of Chemical Engineering got a call from Louisiana State University to present scholarship awards to the best students from the department.

“The students are Otusanya Gabriel Tobi (Class of 2017), Oluwole Titilayo Deborah (Class of 2018), Dauda, Monsuru Olatunji (Class of 2019) and Balogun Toyeeb Olamide (Class of 2019).

“The development testifies to the dedication of LAUTECH in producing students that can compete with its peer anywhere in the world.

“It also justifies the belief of members of staff of the Department of Chemical Engineering in the ability of its students and presenting them for this opportunity,” he said.

Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH) was established on April 23, 1990 under the old Oyo State with the name Oyo State University of Technology, Ogbomosho.

The name was changed in 1991 upon the creation of Osun State out of the then Oyo State.

The university is jointly owned by both states until November 20, 2020 when it became solely owned by the Oyo State government following a mutual agreement between the two states.

Government Wants Multinationals To Take Over Farmlands – Indian farmers

Farmers protest in Indian capital Delhi. The Protesters broke barricades and shouted slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Indian capital of New Delhi, after thousands of farmers gathered to protest against what they said were unfulfilled promises by the government.
More than eight months after farmers called off a year-long protest and the government conceded to several of their demands, more than 5,000 farmers gathered in the centre of the capital to protest against Modi and his government.

In December, 2021- Indian farmers called off a year-long protest after the government conceded a clutch of demands, including assurances to consider guaranteed prices for all produce, instead of just rice and wheat, union leaders said.
The move comes after Prime Minister Narendra Modi said he would roll back three farm laws, seeking to end the longest-running farmers’ protest that galvanized millions of growers who remained resolute in opposing the legislation.

Fleet of Hydrogen Passenger Trains Begins Service In Germany

0

German officials launched what they say is the world’s first fleet of hydrogen-powered passenger trains Wednesday, replacing 15 diesel trains that previously operated on nonelectrified tracks in the state of Lower Saxony.
The 14 trains use hydrogen fuel cells to generate electricity that powers the engines. The German government has backed expanding the use of hydrogen as a clean alternative to fossil fuels.
State governor Stephan Weil said the 93-million-euro ($92 million) project was an “excellent example” for Lower Saxony’s efforts to make its economy greener.

The trains manufactured by French company Alstom are operated by regional rail company LNVG on routes between the northern towns of Cuxhaven, Bremerhaven, Bremervoerde and Buxtehude.
Alstom says the Coradia iLint trains have a range of up to 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) and a maximum speed of 140 kph (87 mph). By using hydrogen produced with renewable energy the trains will save 1.6 million liters (more than 422,000 gallons) of diesel fuel a year.
The hydrogen is currently produced as a byproduct in chemical processes, but German specialty gas company Linde plans to manufacture it locally using only renewable energy within three years.

Whistleblower Could Help Musk With Legal Battle as Twitter Suffers Reputation Problems

0

A whistleblower’s complaint that Twitter Inc misled federal regulators about the company’s security risks could provide Elon Musk with fresh ammunition in his bid to get out of buying the company for $44 billion.
Until now, Musk’s legal showdown with Twitter has primarily centered around claims that the company misled the billionaire about the number of bot and spam accounts on its platform.
The whistleblower complaint by Twitter’s former security chief Peiter Zatko gives Musk new angles to pursue in his legal battle, such as claims that Twitter failed to disclose weaknesses in its security and data privacy.

Canada, Germany Sign New Hydrogen Export Deal

0

Canadian and German leaders signed a ‘hydrogen alliance’ aimed at accelerating efforts to export clean fuel to Germany by 2025.
German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau signed a deal on Tuesday for Germany to import green hydrogen from Canada.
The two leaders signed the deal in the port town of Stephenville, Newfoundland.
The first deliveries are expected in just three years. Germany seeks options as it tries to move away from Russian gas
hydrogen is a clean, versatile fuel that doesn’t produce any direct greenhouse gas emissions — all it takes to release the energy is oxygen, and the only byproduct is water.
In principle, hydrogen can serve as a basis for fuels to replace coal, oil and natural gas in industry and transport. Because its production is very energy-intensive, hydrogen is currently still significantly more expensive than fossil fuels.
Both LNG and green hydrogen are seen as medium-term solutions and will not be able to help Germany in the next few months. Canada does not yet have the means to export LNG internationally, and the production of green hydrogen is still in its infancy.
Industry has long been in on the benefits and has been using hydrogen for decades in the petrochemicals sector — mainly for oil refining, producing ammonia for fertilizers, and in the production of methanol and steel. But it has also been touted as a means of speeding up our transition to clean energy. Even the European Commission has described hydrogen as “the missing part of the puzzle to a fully decarbonized economy”.

TETFund Moves To End Foreign Publications’ Dominance, Sponsors 10

Federal government of Nigeria has moved to end the dominance of foreign publications in the nation’s higher education institutions as it unveiled 10 new textbooks sponsored by the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund).

Speaking at the public presentation of the books in Abuja, the minister of education, Adamu Adamu, said the dependence on foreign academic publications portends great danger to the nation’s education sector, adding that boosting indigenous authorship would address the problem.

He said the paucity of indigenously authored and produced tertiary level textbooks and related academic publications in the nation’s tertiary education institutions is a known fact overtime.

Adamu, who was represented by the minister of state for education, Goodluck Opiah, said Nigeria’s tertiary education institutions became dependent on books published outside the country with the attendant consequences of the pressure on the demand for foreign exchange.

He said: “It is equally worrisome that the quality of most academic publications in our country leaves much to be desired. It is therefore expected that nurturing the culture of quality authorship and the production of indigenous books will not only ensure the availability of relevant books in the diverse subject areas that take cognizance of our local environment and sensitivities but will also safeguard national pride and reduce the demand for foreign exchange.”

He commended TETFund for establishing the higher education book development project to tackle scarcity of tertiary level textbooks which has before now reached a crisis proportion, while hailing the fund for putting in place the technical advisory group (TAG) whose mandate includes collaboratively working with the agency to ensure quality books are churned out by Nigerian authors.

Also speaking, executive secretary of TETFund, Arc Sonny Echono, who expressed delight over the quality of the 10 books, said additional 30 books sponsored by the fund would be unveiled before the end of the year even as he assured of the readiness of the agency to sponsor production of 50 textbooks in 2023.

Joshua Finally Congratulates Usyk, Wishes Champion More Success

AUGUST 21: Anthony Joshua (R) of Great Britain congrats the winner Oleksandr Usyk (L) of Ukraine after boxing rematch under the name of “Rage in the Red Sea” as he retains world title at King Abdullah Sports Complex in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on August 21, 2022.

Anthony Joshua acknowledged on Sunday night that he let himself down with his erratic behaviour in the immediate aftermath of his thrilling defeat by Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia, saying he had acted “out of pure passion and emotion,” reports morningstaronline.co.uk.

After losing a split decision in the fight in Jeddah, a furious Joshua stalked towards the changing room before returning to the ring, grabbing Usyk’s WBA and Ring Magazine belts and dropping them outside the ropes.

The 32-year-old then confronted Usyk, saying, “you’re not strong, how did you beat me? How? I had character and determination,” before addressing the crowd with a confused rant about his past and his own shortcomings as a boxer.

Taking to Twitter on Sunday evening, Joshua posted: “I wish [Usyk] continued success in your quest for greatness. You are a class act, champ.

“Yesterday I had to mentally take myself into a dark place to compete for the championship belts! I had two fights, one with Usyk and one with my emotions and both got the better of me.

“I’ll be the first to admit, I let myself down. I acted out of pure passion and emotion and when not controlled, it ain’t great.

“I love this sport so so much and I’ll be better from this point on. Respect.”Ex-pro Carl Froch had accused Joshua of stealing Usyk’s moment while his gym mate and sparring partner Frazer Clarke said he should have been “saved from himself” by his team, who “hung him out to dry.”

Hours after the end of the fight, as he reflected on a third professional defeat that places him on the periphery of the heavyweight division’s elite, Joshua choked back the tears before holding his head in his hands to mask his anguish.

Once he had regained composure, he attempted to explain actions that have drawn heavy criticism.

“It was just from the heart. I was mad at myself. Not at anyone, just at myself. I’ve gotta get out of here because I’m mad,” Joshua said.

oshua was transformed from the fighter who surrendered the WBA, IBF and WBO belts to Usyk in London last September but was still outpointed 113-115, 115-113, 116-112 by the Ukrainian southpaw.

Usyk’s movement, hand speed, ring craft and work rate underpinned an impressive victory, which came after serving as a military volunteer in Kiev following Russia’s invasion of his homeland.

“What you saw was raw emotion. A real person who was feeling the pressure and who wanted to win so badly,” said promoter Eddie Hearn, as he addressed the negativity that has stalked Joshua’s career.

“You live in an online world where it’s opinion, stick, abuse. He will never tell you that he sees that pressure or feels it, but it’s impossible not to.

“I just want AJ to be happy. He’s given his whole life since he started boxing and people don’t realise what a bubble it is.”
