Global Tech Import:  Pelosi Meets Taiwan’s Biggest Semiconductor Manufacturer

0

One of Nancy Pelosi’s key meetings on her tour of Taiwan reportedly is Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co TSMC, the island’s most valuable company and world’s biggest contract chipmaker.

The US House Speaker met with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. Chairman Mark Liu on Wednesday to discuss Congress’ recently passed Chips and Science Act and its $52 billion in subsidies for new chip manufacturing plants on American soil, according to a Washington Post report. It’s a notable stop in an itinerary otherwise packed with government agencies and symbolic photo ops and underscores not just the strategic importance of the island, but its outsized technological weight in the global economy.

Taiwan is home to industry-leading chip factories as well as an industrial base that supplies key components for electronics, medical equipment and sensitive nuclear power and military use. US officials have said that Beijing gaining access to the technology and expertise housed in Taiwan constitutes a security risk. China, which considers Taiwan a region under its jurisdiction, has called the Speaker’s visit to the island “provocative.”

Why You Need To Plan That Vacation Right Now

0

The stress is piling up. The work seems overwhelming. Family issues abound. You’re ready to pull out your hair. It sounds like you need a vacation. There are, in fact, many reasons to take a vacation, and not all are negative.

Maybe your stress is beginning to get to you, and you’re having trouble calming down. If you can’t sleep well at night and are shaky and uptight during the day, this is a sign that you need a break. Taking a couple of days off work might not be enough to settle you down. Household responsibilities and other obligations can still weigh heavily, and you might not even be able to completely let go of work. In that case, take a vacation. Get away from it all for a few days, and allow yourself to wind down. A stay at Island Cay at Clear-water Beach might just be the ticket.

Overwhelming Work

Sometimes your stress may arise from an overwhelming amount of work. Your to-do list is overflowing, and your calendar is packed. You’re on the verge of burning out, and your productivity is dropping. While you may be reluctant to leave your work behind, you need a vacation. It’ll give you time to rediscover yourself as a person rather than a worker and some much-needed peace and quiet. Just don’t take your work with you!

Family Troubles

If you and your family members are getting on each other’s nerves due to the pressures of daily life, then perhaps it’s time to escape those pressure for a while and take a family vacation. Plan your trip together, and make sure that each family member gets to choose some activities and places to visit. Encourage everyone to be a good sport and to strive toward a positive attitude throughout your vacation. You might even discover that you all really love each other as daily irritations fade.

A Desire To Learn

Even if you are not harried by stress, work or problems of all kinds, you still might need a vacation if you want to pursue your deep desire to learn. Travel can expand your world and your mind. You’ll learn about history and culture, about people and places and nature. If this sounds good to you, then turn your vacation into a learning experience. After you’ve chosen your destination, read as much as you can about it. Make a list of the places you want to visit, including museums, historic sites and cultural venues. Don’t neglect to spend time talking to locals either and trying local foods. You’ll be surprised how much you learn.

A Thirst for Adventure

Your need for a vacation might also arise from a thirst for adventure. You want to get out of the humdrum daily routine and do something that involves a little risk and a lot of excitement. Plan a wilderness adventure, for instance, and spend several days honing your survival skills. Go skydiving or deep sea diving. Climb a mountain. You’ll return to your daily life invigorated.

Health Restoration

Finally, you might have to go on vacation to restore your health. The pressures of life can beat down on your relentlessly, weakening your physical and mental health. If you’re experiencing headaches, depression, anxiety and other symptoms, then maybe it’s time for a break. A vacation, even a short one, will allow you time off to pull yourself together. The rest and enjoyment you experience can re-balance your body and mind and strengthen you when you resume your daily work.

Indeed, vacations are important for many reasons, so start planning yours right away. You just might need one!

Industrial Gas Leak: 87 Women Hospitalised In India

0

At least 87 women have been hospitalised after a gas leak at an apparel manufacturing plant in India, local media reports said Wednesday.

The workers complained of nausea and vomiting at a plant in the Atchyutapuram district of the southern state of Andhra Pradesh on Tuesday night.

No deaths had been reported and the situation was under control on Wednesday, broadcaster India Today said.

The hospitalisations follow a similar accident in June when around 200 women fell unconscious after a gas leak in the same area.

China-Taiwan Conflict:  Could Aggravate Catastrophic Semiconductor Shortage

0

The U.S. Navy has deployed four warships east of Taiwan as U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi makes her way to visit the country. China had previously warned that its military would not “sit idly by” if Pelosi were to visit Taiwan.

Pelosi spent the night in Taiwan’s capital, Taipei, on Tuesday, August 2 and departed August 3.  She had been warned not to do so by officials from China, who claim sovereignty over the self-ruled island.

While the loss of life would clearly be the worst consequence if conflict were to break out, the heightened tensions also highlight the world’s incredible reliance on Taiwan for semiconductors. It’s an issue that’s especially prescient given the ongoing global impact of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine — such as an impending gas crisis in Germany due to Russia’s squeeze on gas supplies.

Enormous Sinkhole Appears In Chile, Experts Investigate Cause

0

Experts in Chile investigated the appearance of an enormous sinkhole, bigger than a tennis court, that has appeared near a copper mine in the Atacama desert.

Experts were dispatched to examine the hole, some 32 meters (104 feet) across and twice as deep, which appeared in an area about 800 kilometers (nearly 500 miles) north of Santiago over the weekend, the National Geology and Mining Service (Sernageomin) said in a statement.

A 100-meter security perimeter has been erected around the hole in the Tierra Amarilla municipality, near the Alcaparrosa mine operated by Canadian firm Lundin Mining.

The company said in a statement there had been “no impact to personnel, equipment or infrastructure,” and the sinkhole has remained stable since its detection.

As a preventive measure, “development work in an area of the Alcaparrosa underground mine has been temporarily suspended,” the company said.

Sernageomin director David Montenegro said experts would seek to determine the cause of the collapse and “ensure that all safety measures are taken to safeguard the lives of workers and communities close to the site.”

Cristian Zuniga, mayor of the Tierra Amarilla municipality of some 13,000 inhabitants, told journalists the sinkhole was unprecedented.

“We ask that the cause be clarified: whether the collapse is the product of mining activity or something else,” he said.

Chile is the world’s largest copper producer, responsible for a quarter of global supply.

Asian Stocks Higher As US-China Tensions Escalate

0

Asian stock markets rose Wednesday as traders watched for signs trade might be disrupted by U.S.-Chinese tensions over an American lawmaker’s visit to Taiwan.

Shanghai, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Seoul advanced after Beijing announced a ban on imports of some Taiwanese goods but no immediate major penalties following the arrival of Speaker Nancy Pelosi of the U.S. House of Representatives. The mainland’s ruling Communist Party claims Taiwan as part of its territory and rejects foreign official contact with the self-ruled island democracy.

Taiwan’s Taiex shed 0.2% to 14,724.51 after Beijing announced a ban on citrus and some fish from Taiwan to show its displeasure at Pelosi’s visit. The mainland announced military maneuvers in areas surrounding Taiwan but no indication it might punish industries such as Taiwanese producers of processor chips needed by Chinese factories that assemble the world’s smartphones.

First Ship With Ukraine Grain Cleared To Sail, Arrives Lebanon

0

The first grain ship to depart Ukraine under a wartime deal was poised to cross through the Bosporus Strait and sail to Lebanon after its cargo was checked and approved Wednesday, Turkish and Ukrainian authorities said.

An inspection team spent about 90 minutes conducting checks aboard the Sierra Leone-flagged Razoni, which was carrying Ukrainian corn and anchored off Istanbul, Turkey’s defense ministry said.

The team included officials from Ukraine, Russia, Turkey and the United Nations. The Razoni’s horn rang out as the inspectors left the ship.

Pictures tweeted by the Turkish Ministry of Defense showed an inspector reaching into an open container on the Razoni and touching the grain.

The Razoni, which the United Nations says is carrying 26,527 tons of corn, set sail Monday from Odesa on Ukraine’s Black Sea coast. It is bound for Lebanon, its final destination.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Infrastructure confirmed the ship had passed the inspection and said 17 other vessels “are loaded and are awaiting permission to leave.”

OPEC+ To Decide Global Oil Output, Amid High Inflation

0

The OPEC oil cartel and its allies are meeting Wednesday to decide how much crude to produce in September amid high oil prices and unstable energy supplies exacerbated by the war Russia has waged on Ukraine.

They also will be considering what effects staggering inflation and rising COVID-19 rates may have on global demand for fuel in the fall, with gasoline prices at the pump still high.

OPEC, led by Saudi Arabia, and its allies, led by Russia, curtailed production during the pandemic as oil prices and demand plummeted, and those cuts are due to expire in September. The OPEC+ coalition has been gradually adding more oil and gas to the market as economies recovered.

At its last meeting, the OPEC+ coalition decided to boost production in August by 648,000 barrels per day. Some energy experts are expecting a similar production increase for September.

Exploring Kish Island, The Beautiful Resort In Iran

0

Kish Island is a new upcoming resort island that is part of the Hormozgān Province, located in the Persian Gulf, officially belonging to the Republic of Iran.

This 91.5 square km (35.3 square mi) resort island, due to its free trade zone status, is considered to be a consumer’s paradise that houses numerous malls, shopping centers, tourist attractions , and resort hotels.

Even though Dubai and the whole UAE are just thirty minutes flight from the island, Kish feels like a completely different world, and not just from the UAE but the rest of the world too.

The visitors can enter the island visa-free for up to 14 days. However, the women are intended to wear head scarves/hijabs according to the Iranian stringent dress code.

Yet, when one is going to reach the island, there are many hotels and places that are worth being seen.

For instance is the Greek cargo steamship from 1943, Koula F, located on the south-west coast of the island.

The ship originally has been built in Scotland, and ran aground in 1966 when the crew abandoned it and set the ship on fire. Nowadays, what remains from her is just the steel hulk being admired from the people visiting the island.

The ancient underground aqueduct, which is also called ‘Underground City’ is partially open for the tourists and was built some 1,000 years ago for transportation and water supply across the different parts of the island.

Still, the fresh air and the clear waters of the sea are attracting even more people, where one can see the fish swimming in the sea.

The Green Tree Park, the Mysteries of the World Zoo as well as the Ancient Town of Cariz and Harireh are additional attraction for more people.

There are coral reefs for extra pleasure of snorkeling and diving for the tourists and the Kish International Airport is actually the highest point on the island, rising some 35-40 meters (115-131 feet) above the sea level.

Many different sights and landscapes that are waiting to be discovered on this island, which makes it an alluring place for all those willing to roam around the very dry semi equatorial climate and experience what not so many can experience.

Worst Breakfast Habits Slowing Your Metabolism

0

As soon as you take one bite of your favorite food and or one sip of your favorite drink, your body starts working to convert these substances into energy it can use. This process is called metabolism.

Metabolism is almost always discussed alongside weight loss or weight management, but it can begin to feel overwhelming if we don’t know how to keep our metabolism at a healthy level.

One of the main ways you can boost your metabolism is by maintaining a healthy diet. In order to learn even more about this, we talked with a couple of dietitians to have them weigh in on common breakfast habits that might be slowing your metabolism.

“While many people think skipping breakfast is better for your metabolism, nothing could be further from the truth,” says Amy Goodson, MS, RD, CSSD, LD  “Think of a fire. In order for it to start burning, you have to light it. Then you add small amounts of wood every couple of hours to keep it blazing. The same is true with your metabolism! You want to jump-start it in the morning with a high-fiber carbohydrate and protein, then add small meals and snacks throughout the day to keep the fire burning.”

According to a recent review published in Nutrients, avoiding breakfast has been found to interrupt the body’s circadian rhythm, which is known to negatively impact your metabolism and overall health.

If you need some inspiration for an easy breakfast to make, “consider eggs, whole grain toast, and milk or oatmeal with nuts, seeds, and nut butter paired with Greek yogurt to kick off the day,” says Goodson.

“When you eat too much added sugar first thing in the morning, your blood sugar rises and then ceases,” says Lisa Young, PhD, RDN.

Added sugar, especially in the form of sugary drinks, has been shown to slow down metabolism as well. In a study published in the European Journal for Clinical Nutrition, it was found that participants who were considered overweight and consumed heavy amounts of sugary beverages saw a drop in their metabolism.

“The healthiest breakfasts for your metabolism include a combination of nutrients and creating the perfect pair,” says Dr. Young. “For example, including protein, healthy carbs, and good fat like an omelet and adding greens and tomato, or including avocado for healthy fat on a slice of whole grain toast.”

Along the same lines of not starting your day with added sugars, Goodson warns that beginning your morning with only carbohydrates of any type can still cause a spike in blood sugar.

While your body needs carbohydrates for energy, if you eat them by themselves they can often spike your blood sugar causing it to drop later, setting you up for an energy crash. When your blood sugar drops, people often crave sugar and it sets them on a blood sugar roller coaster for the rest of the day,” she says.

Instead of only eating carbs, Goodson suggests balancing your breakfast out with protein. “Protein helps you get full faster and stay full longer after a meal because, in comparison to carbohydrate and fat, it takes the longest to break down,” says Goodson, “and while the thermic effect of food does not burn turns of calories, it does burn some, and protein revs that calorie burning system up. So, adding protein can help rev that metabolic process.”

“So many people think they should eat something light for breakfast and save their calories for the rest of the day! That is a metabolism no-no,” says Goodson. “Instead the goal is to rev up your metabolism in the morning by ‘starting the fire,’ then continuously adding small amounts of wood (aka food) to keep it burning throughout the day.”

Instead of eating your smallest meal at the start of the day and eating larger meals later on, try eating a full, satisfying meal for breakfast that will set you up for success the rest of the day.

“And typically when people start the day with a high-fiber, protein-rich breakfast, they tend to eat less at night and avoid some of those evening cravings,” says Goodson.

Another unhealthy habit that many of us have is forgetting to stay hydrated first thing in the morning.

“Your body needs water to function at a cellular level, so when you’re dehydrated your metabolism becomes sluggish,” says Kaleigh McMordie, MCN, RDN. “Be sure to include a drink, whether it be water, coffee, tea, or juice, with your breakfast. Better yet, drink a glass of water first thing in the morning to prevent dehydration.
