Ekweremadu, a former Deputy President of the Senate, is being held alongside his wife by the UK authorities over allegations that he brought a young man into the country for the purpose of organ harvesting.

The doctor was identified as Obinna Obeta and is said to be residing in Southwark in south London.

He was charged under the Modern Slavery Act with arranging the travel of the 21-year-old man with a view to him being exploited between last August and May, Daily Mail reported.

In another charge, the defendant was alleged to have conspired with the couple to arrange or facilitate the travel of the man with a view to him being exploited, namely organ harvesting.

Fifty-year-old Obeta was brought to the Bexley Magistrates’ Court on July 13, while arguments in the case were heard on Friday.

He said such adulterated products were gradually finding their way into filling stations and the association would not allow the unhealthy development to continue.

DSS Report Won’t Stop Solidarity Rally, Labour Tells Federal Govt.

0

The Nigeria Labour Congress and the Joint Action Committee, comprising the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Allied Institutions and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, have said their planned protest in solidarity with the Academic Staff Union of Universities will hold as planned.

The labour unions said they were not aware of any security report by the Department of State Services that advised against the rally, insisting that their protest in solidarity with ASUU over its six months old strike would hold on July 26 and 27.

ASUU had on February 14, 2022 embarked on a nationwide strike over the failure of the Federal Government to honour the agreement it reached with the union in 2009. The issues in contention include the delay in the release of the revitalisation fund for the universities, adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution as the preferred payment platform for the university system and the payment of earned academic allowances to lecturers.

Despite the series of meetings between the Federal Government and the union, the issues have yet to be resolved, prolonging the strike and prompting the intervention of the NLC.

On Thursday, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, cautioned against the demonstration, saying he received a security report from the DSS that the rally might be hijacked by hoodlums.

Responding to Ngige on Friday in an interview, the Head, Information and Public Affairs, NLC, Benson Upah, stated that the congress was not aware of any security report by the DSS.

He noted that the rally was a symbolic gesture to pressure the government to resolve the five-month ASUU strike, adding that the union’s rallies were always peaceful and that participants had always conducted themselves in a peaceful manner.

He said the police were aware of the protest and would be expected to provide security during the exercise.

He said, “First and foremost, none of our rallies have ever been associated with violence; Nigerians can attest to that. We have always been peaceful; we will ensure we are not implicated. We will carry out our duty as usual.

“I’m not aware of any directive sent to us but I heard the Minister of Labour and Employment saying an advisory came to him, but this will not be the first time such an advisory will be issued.

The NLC spokesperson clarified that the organised labour was not going on strike action but a rally where labour leaders would speak on the issues at stake.

He added, “Let us also take note of the fact that this is not a strike action but a peaceful rally. It’s a symbolic gesture so
people should understand and know the difference. The police are welcomed. When we are holding rallies like this, we invite the police, not to seek their permission, because the law says we don’t need their permission and that we have been automatically granted the permission.”

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja on Friday, the NASU General Secretary and spokesperson, SSANU/NASU JAC, Peters Adeyemi, and the SSANU President, Mohammed Ibrahim, stated that their members would participate in the rally dressed in their uniform.

Ibrahim said, “For your information, the four unions are affiliated to NLC. We pay our dues, it is not free. So we enjoy all the rights and privileges of NLC membership and therefore when the issue became intractable, we took this matter to NLC and being our umbrella body, NLC took certain steps, one of which is if the previous meetings did not yield any fruit, then there will be a protest rally.

“This rally is organised by the NLC and we will be there and our members will appear in our uniforms.

“Since the law enforcement agencies have been informed, we expect that they will give us protection. We expect that they will make sure that certain groups will not have access to where we are. So, it is not our duty to say this is how we will prevent others from coming. We will not allow ourselves to be used by any politician.”

Ukraine Invasion: EU To Replace Gas From Russia With Nigerian Gas

0

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS said on Friday that, it would replace the gas from Russia with Nigerian Gas due to the invasion in Ukraine.

The Deputy Director-General Department for (Energy), European Commission in Brussels, Mr Matthew Baldwin, said this at a news conference on Friday in Abuja.

Baldwin will be meeting with Nigerian top government officials and private sector players, including key stakeholders in the country’s Energy Sector.

EU’s executive body had urged member states to slash their gas consumption by 15 per cent as it warned that a complete shutdown of Russian supplies was “likely”.

The EU has been scrambling to wean itself off Russian gas since the invasion of Ukraine, but is alarmed about a potential energy crisis this winter.

“In summary, I am on a mission from Europe to try to deliver Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) today in the context of NLG partnership tomorrow with Nigeria.

“Europe is in a tight spot in relation to gas, following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, and the instability in our gas market, and the threat of cutting off supply altogether.

“So, we have launched the energy platform task force and the primary goal is to reach out to our reliable partners such as Nigeria to replace the gas from Russia with gas from reliable partners, like Nigeria.” he said.

“To be clear, we need to manage the supply side and that’s why we want to expand what is currently at 14 per cent shares of our total LNG import from Nigeria and we want it to go up.

“Our gas percentage was 60 per cent but now we want to go,’’ he said.

He added that Nigerian products had an extraordinary potential and that was why EU wanted to expand the short-term delivery.

Also, he said that by the end of August this year EU hopefully to kick start the partnership, adding that, it would create a long term partnership with Nigeria.

The EU as a bloc remains Nigeria’s biggest trading partner accounting for more than 20 per cent of Nigerian trade with the world.

In 2021 the volume of EU-Nigeria trade stood at 28.7 billion euros (an increase of more than 25 per cent over 2020) with a trade balance of 6.4 billion euros in favour of Nigeria.

Exploring Bonriki International Airport Located In Kiribati

0

Bonriki International Airport is the main international airport which serves as the main entrance to the Pacific island nation of the Republic of Kiribati, and it is located in the southern part of the capital atoll, Tarawa.

At first, the airport was built in December 1943 by United States Navy Seabees who named it Mullinix Field in honor of Rear Admiral Henry M. Mullinix, who actually died in the sinking of the USS Liscombe Bay on 24 November 1943 which was torpedoed by a Japanese submarine off the Gilbert Islands.

The airport served as a major link in the war against the Japanese, however, as the war was moving towards Japan, the airport was reduced to an emergency airfield, whereas when the war ended it was completely abandoned and it was turned into a civilian airport.

As the terrain around the airport is very flat, the asphalt runway nowadays is 2,011 meters (6,598 feet) long, however it is about 3 meters (9 feet) above the sea.

There are couple of buildings, but the main terminal building is built entirely of wood in somewhat distinguishing architectural style which is recognizable for the Pacific island nations.

With Air Kiribati being one of the main transportation airliners, there are connections to the rest of the Kiribati islands, together with the links to Majuro in the Marshall Islands, Brisbane in Australia, Honiara in the Solomon Islands, Nadi in Fiji and Pohnpei in the Federated States of Micronesia.

ASUU: DSS Security Report Warns Against Protest, Ngige tells NLC

0

The Federal Government has appealed to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to cancel its planned protest over the prolonged strike of the Academic Staff Union of Universities and other university-based unions.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, made the appeal on Thursday at a meeting with the leadership of NLC in his office.

Also in attendance at the meeting were the Minister of State, Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo; and the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ms. Kachollom Daju.

Ngige, in his speech, updated the labour leaders of efforts so far made by the Federal Government to resolve the impasse in the university system.

The NLC had on July 17 announced that it would stage a nationwide protest on July 26 and 27 to pressure the Federal Government to resolve the five-month-long strike by ASUU and other university-based unions.

ASUU embarked on the industrial action on February 14, over what the union described as the failure of the government to address some of its demands.

In a press statement signed by the Head of Press and Public Relations, Federal Ministry of Labour and Employment, Olajide Oshundun, the minister reminded the NLC leadership that he incorporated them into the tripartite conciliation going on in his ministry, and being aware of efforts of the government to resolve the impasse, they cannot embark on any rally or protest.

He further told the labour leaders that the Federal Executive Council mandated him to notify them of the serious security implications of the planned protest.

According to him, a security report also sent to his office by the Department of State Services, strongly warned against holding the protest.

The minister further urged the NLC to reconsider the planned rally as hoodlums might take advantage of it to cause breach of security.

Ngige expressed the concern of the Government that politicians might cash in on the rally to wreak havoc in the country.

He said, “The masses might wrongly interpret the rally as a ploy by the NLC to enhance the chances of the Labour Party presidential candidate, a situation which could spur the supporters of the other political parties into violence.

“Section 40 of the constitution is clear on Freedom of Association. One of the provisions is that people of like minds can organise themselves and form a political party. There is also a provision that people in work or employment can organise themselves into unions. They are two parallels. Parallels don’t meet.

“I heard when you said you are mobilising for Labour Party. But, a trade union is not a political party. Look at the Trade Union Act. It does not allow trade unions to use their contributions to support any political party.”
