FG Committee Recommends ₦ 2 Million Monthly Pay For Professors

0

Professors in the Nigerian university system are set to earn N2 million each as monthly salary, if the Federal Government accepts the recommendations of its committee on the 2009 agreements with university-based unions.

The committee also recommended varied yearly allowances for professors. The allowances are for postgraduate supervision, field trip, responsibility and hazard, examination/timekeeper and teaching practice/industrial supervision.

Others are honoraria for post-graduate thesis (oral exam), external modulation programmes for undergraduate/post-graduate students, external assessment of readers and postgraduate study grants.

The details are contained in a draft proposal of the renegotiated 2009 agreement submitted to the Presidential Committee on Salaries and Wages by Prof Nimi Briggs, chairman of the Renegotiation Committee of the 2009 pacts.

Briggs said “All the documents have been submitted to the Minister of Education Alhaji Adamu Adamu.”

Asked to confirm the recommendations, ASUU President Emmanuel Osodeke said: ” Quoting figures in a document that has not been signed is against the tenets of collective bargaining agreement.

“Anybody who gave out those figures is breaching all the rules about collective bargaining. “Until the draft agreement is signed, we cannot release the figures.

“If the government has a problem with the figures, they should come back to us. You don’t blackmail people during negotiation. You don’t go to the public to churn out fake figures during negotiations.”

“If you have a problem with what your committee negotiated, you come back to the table and renegotiate it”

“And that is why the committee went back to the government to say give us permission to sign or raise issues if you have. If you have issues you come back to the committee and not go to the public.”

“If the committee has finished its work and submitted its report to the government, why are they coming with blackmail? It is against all tenets of negotiations.”

It was however learnt that the Briggs Committee has been mandated to go back to the drawing board to produce a “reasonable, practicable wage increase, which will reflect relativity of every worker in the educational sector – academic and non-academic.”

A source in the ministry had accused the committee of proposing an impracticable increase in the university wage structure.

The source also said that the committee was partial as it raised the pay and allowances of university teachers by 180 per cent while adding only 10 per cent to those of the non-teaching members of staff.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige in a statement on Wednesday accused the committee of excluding the relevant advisory government arms like the Ministries of Finance, Education, Labour and Employment, Budget Office of the Federation, Office of the Head of Service of the Federation, National Salaries Income and Wages Commission from the sittings of the committee.

He argued that their “exclusion from the sittings of Prof. Nimi Briggs easily explains its non-inclusive and one-sided proposal, recommending sky-high, impracticable figures in salaries and allowances that are clearly beyond the capacity of the Federal Government.”

NFT Platform OpenSea Announces Massive Layoffs, Letting Go 20 Percent of Employees

0

Devin Finzer, the CEO of OpenSea, announced Thursday on social media that the NFT marketplace is laying off 20 percent of its employees.

“We made the incredibly sad and difficult decision to reduce the size of our team,” Finzer wrote in a Discord message that he then published on social media. “Today we are going to say goodbye to many of our friends and team members across OpenSea.”

Prior to the layoff, OpenSea had around 275 employees. After the layoff of just over 40 employees, they remain with 230.

In January, OpenSea announced a valuation of $13 billion following a successful round of series C funding totaling $300 million. At that time, the company was operating with 90 employees. After the funding came in, Finzer said at the time that he planned to use the money to “grow the team” of customer service employees from 60 to 120, to help quality of responses to customer support requests from their users. The marketplace has been plagued with technical difficulties and plagiarism complaints, along with a steady drip of hacks and scams, which has led to legal trouble.

Finzer, and co-founder Alex Atallah were recently named NFT’s first billionares, each valued at $2.2 billion, according to Forbes.

Some of the trouble users faced came from internal issues. A former OpenSea employee, Nate Chastain, was arrested in early June in connection with an alleged insider trading scheme while at the marketplace, a first. A decision to limit the amount of NFTs one could create in a day temporarily caused mayhem on the site before executives backtracked their decision and Iranian OpenSea users were unceremoniously kicked off the platform after the company said it had to comply with US sanctions against Iran.

Finzer wrote in his announcement that he appreciated the work of all those emplyees who were being let go and that he would “treat them with great care,” which would include a “generous” severance and healthcare coverage through to 2023.

In the announcement, Finzer wrote that while OpenSea had been built to weather an inevitable slump in the value of cryptocurrencies, “the combination of a crypto winter and broader microeconomic instability” necessitated a new strategy.

“The changes we’re making today put us in a position to maintain multiple years of runway under various crypto winter scenarios (5 years at current volume) and give us high confidence that we’ll only have to go through this process once,” Finzer wrote.

The NFT platform isn’t the only one feeling the burn of crypto winter. This past June, crypto startups like Coinbase, crypto.com, and Gemini all announced layoffs, while crypto hedge fund Three Arrows Capital is currently being liquidated despite its founders having recently disappeared. Crypto isn’t the only sector suffering. Internet service businesses like GoPuff and Stripe have also announced mass firings.

Like many in the crypto world, Finzer is toeing the current party line: that despite massive losses, the downturn is an ultimately positive moment that will allow creators in the NFT space and across Web3 to “build”.

“We have a huge opportunity in front of us,” Finzer wrote. “With the hard (but important) changes we made today, we’re in an even better position to capture what will soon become the largest market on the planet.”

Nollywood actor Olanrewaju Omiyinka, popularly known as Baba Ijesha has been sentenced to sixteen years in prison.

Justice Oluwatoyin Taiwo of the Ikeja Domestic Violence and Sexual Offences Court on Thursday, July 14, 2022, sentenced the actor to prison.

Delivering the judgement, Justice Taiwo said that the prosecution failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the defendant is guilty of all the charges against him.

However, she found the defendant guilty of two of the six counts against him.

Baba Ijesha was detained on April 22, 2021, after the Lagos State Police Command announced his arrest for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in the care of Princess.

Described as one of the most talked about celebrity court cases ever in Nigeria, several pieces of evidence were laid before the court on how the actor sexually assaulted the young child.

A forensic report was presented by a child forensic expert, Olabisi Ajayi-Kayode at the Special Offenses Court in Ikeja.

The Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecutions, which proffered the charges against the actor, argued that the offences contravene Section 135, 137, 261, 202, 262 and 263 of the Lagos State Criminal Law 2015, which stipulates life imprisonment for offenders.

Baba Ijesha pleaded not guilty to all the counts.

Olatoye, 4x400m Mixed Relay Team To Open Team Nigeria’s Bid For Medals

0

Hammer thrower Oyesade Olatoye and the 4x400m mixed relay team will open Team Nigeria’s bid for podium appearances when the 18th World Athletics Championships begin Friday at the Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

Olatoye, drawn in group A of the qualifiers for the final will be making history as the first Nigerian, man or woman to compete in the Hammer throw event in the championships.

Last month in Mauritius, the 25 year old won the Hammer throw title at the African Athletics Championships to become the first Nigerian woman to emerge African champion in the history of the championships.

Olatoye will however need a miracle to progress further in the event as she is lined up against athletes who have been throwing over 70m consistently including Janee’ Kassanavoid of the USA who is third on the world list so far this year with her 78.00m throw in May and Canada’s Camryn Rogers who is not far behind with the 77.67m personal best she incidentally threw at the Hayward Field last month. She is fourth in the top list for 2022.

The Nigerian’s 65.74m personal season’s best will definitely not get her over the line and will need to throw a huge personal best of at least 73.50m which is the automatic qualification mark or be among the 12 best throwers from the two qualifying groups.

For the 4x400m team of Patience Okon-George, Imaobong Nse Uko, Sikiru Adeyemi, Dubem Amene and Nathaniel Samson, the World Championships presents another big stage to make history as the first mixed relay team to make the final of a global event after debutting at the Tokyo Olympics last year, exiting in the first round.

The team has been drawn in heat 1 of two first round heats and will run from lane three, sandwiched between Poland, the reigning Olympic champion in lane two and USA, bronze medal winner in Tokyo in lane four.

Three teams will qualify automatically from the heat for the final while two others with fastest losing times will join. The final will be held later Friday evening. The Nigerian team set a new 3:13.60 African in Tokyo last year.

Later Friday evening, the heats for the men’s 100m will hold with Favour Ashe, the reigning fastest man in Nigeria scheduled to run. Also expected to be in the line up will be reigning World U20 Champion, Udodi Onwuzurike.

The duo will be aiming to return Nigeria to the final of the blue ribband event 15 years after Olusoji Fasuba ran in the final in Osaka, Japan.

Also Friday evening, the duo of Chukwuebuka Enekwechi and Dotun Ogundeji will begin their quest for places in the final of the Shot Put event.

Enekwechi, the reigning Nigeria and African shot put king has been drawn in group A while Ogundeji will compete in group B and both will be seeking to hit the 21.20m automatic qualifying mark or be among the 12 best to qualify for the final.

Enekwechi only needs to repeat the mark that gave him his second straight African title in Mauritius last month to make his second straight final while Ogundeji, who is making his first appearance at the championships will need to throw way beyong the 21.05m personal best he set in 2019 to be quaranteed of a final appearance.

Nigeria will also be hoping to win more than the one medal Ese Brume won three years ago in Doha, Qatar. The last time the country won two medals was in 2013 in Moscow, Russia where Blessing Okagbare leapt to a silver medal in the long jump and a bronze medal in the 200m.

The country will also be seeking a first ever gold medal in the championships and will be relying on Brume, the only Nigerian still competing who has won medals at the World indoor and outdoor championships and at the Olympics as well as sprint hurdler, Tobiloba Amusan who has a 50-50 chance of not just making the podium this time around after two fourth placed finishes in Doha in 2019 and at the Olympics last year but also win the gold.

The petite 25 year old set a new 12.41 seconds personal best and African record just last month and the Nigerian knows she needs to win a world title to be able to stake a claim to being one of the greatest sprinters in the world.

Serena Williams To Continue Comeback At Us Open Warm-Up In Toronto

0

Serena Williams will continue her comeback next month at the National Bank Open in Toronto, Canada.

The 23-time grand slam singles champion played in her first singles tournament for a year at Wimbledon but did not commit on her future plans.

However, the American, 40, has signed up to play at one of the US Open warm-up tournaments, beginning on 8 August.

She has won the US Open six times but is currently unranked having not won a singles match for more than a year.

Williams returned to competitive tennis in the doubles at Eastbourne last month having not played since retiring injured from her first-round match at Wimbledon last year.

Many wondered whether one of the greatest players of all time might have slipped quietly into retirement, but before this year’s Wimbledon she said: “I didn’t retire. I just needed to heal physically, mentally.

“I had no plans, to be honest. I just didn’t know when I would come back. I didn’t know how I would come back.”

Williams is one major short of Australian player Margaret Court’s record 24 Grand Slam singles titles.

At this year’s Wimbledon she lost in the first round to Harmony Tan and, speaking about her hopes of playing at Flushing Meadows, she said: “When you’re at home, especially in New York, and the US Open, that being the first place I’ve won a Grand Slam is something that’s always super special.

“There’s definitely lots of motivation to get better and to play at home.”

Williams’ first Grand Slam title was the US Open in 1999, and her most recent at the Australian Open in 2017.

This year’s US Open begins on 29 August.

Gov. Ben Ayade of Cross River, has emerged as the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for Cross River North Seat at the National Assembly for 2023 polls.

Ayade, who emerged unopposed, was elected at a fresh primary election at the Ogoja Local Government Area (LGA) of the state on Thursday.

The election followed the voluntary withdrawal of Martins Orim, who won the ticket at the May 28, primaries.

Sameera Tabo, Chairperson of the APC Primary Election Committee for Cross River North declared the governor winner with 252 votes.

According to reports, the total votes cast was 255, while three votes were invalidated.

According to Tabo, following Orim’s withdrawal, the fresh primary election was to ensure that the party fielded a candidate for Cross River North under the provisions of the Electoral Act.

In his acceptance speech, Ayade expressed gratitude to the delegates for electing him.

He said that after running for the office of the president of Nigeria, he returned home and then came under pressure from his people to contest for senate.

“They said I did very well when I was a Senator from 2011 to 2015 and insisted I go back; today I have answered their call.

“Of course, they recognised that this country requires a legislator that has both executive and legislative experience.

“I am very experienced, I know the challenges of our people and possess the essential elements that will help us make the appropriate laws and legislation that will change the narrative of our people,” he said.

The governor said he was well equipped for the senate and would bring his wealth of experience to bear in the upper legislative chamber if elected.

Lagos To Host Biggest NAFEST Ever – Sanwo-Olu

0

Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has assured that the state has concluded plans to host the most colourful edition of the National Festival of Arts and Culture (NAFEST) scheduled for November.

Sanwo-Olu gave the assurance on Thursday when he received a delegation from the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC) led by the Director-General, Chief Segun Runsewe, main organisers of the festival.

According to a statement issued by Runsewe, the delegation was in the governor’s office to formally present a blueprint of the festival and ascertain the level of preparedness of the state in hosting the 2022 edition of the festival.

NAFEST is an annual cultural festival which brings together contingents from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT to a host state to showcase the nation’s diverse cultural heritage in arts, crafts and all.

Sanwo-Olu said that a delegation from the state had visited NCAC for a Pre-NAFEST maiden meeting to interact and obtain details of hosting the festival.

He said based on the report, the state government had to improve on their facilities to meet all criteria set by the NCAC.

He noted that this was done to enable the state not only to host the biggest and most colourful festival, but also emerge the overall winner of the fiesta.

He revealed that as a prelude to the festival, Lagos state would hold a Pre-NAFEST event for seven days.

He said this was aimed at showcasing the rich cultural heritage of all the local government areas in the state which would therefore herald the EkoNAFEST 2022.

In his response, Runsewe congratulated the Lagos State Government for winning the hosting right for NAFEST 2022, which was keenly contested by three other states.

He said that the festival which is the foremost cultural event in Nigeria had been a platform to unite the nation through arts and culture.

He reiterated that the festival which grows richer, bigger and better with every edition would provide a strong platform for the state which is the centre of excellence to bring its well-known finesse to bear in making the EKO NAFEST 2022 the best of its kind in the history of the festival given its track record.

“The essence of the visit is for us to interact and brief you on details of hosting the festival which will bring together contingents from the 36 states of the federation and the FCT to Lagos State for seven days,” he said.

He explained that the festival would have far reaching benefits to Lagos residents with a positive impact on the economy of the state in the areas of hotel accommodation, transportation, small scale businesses and vendors.

Runsewe expressed the need for the state Local Organising Committee (LOC) to work in close partnership with the National Organising Committee (NOC) for effective coordination.

According to him, the wife of the governor, Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu will be crowned the mother of NAFEST, “Mama NAFEST 22”, during the National Technical Stakeholders meeting coming up later in the month.

“This will also afford her the platform to host the children during the Eko NAFEST 2022,” he said.

Highlight of the meeting was the exchange of cultural gifts between the governor and the director-general of NCAC.

The Defence Headquarters says troops of Operation Delta Safe have discovered and destroyed 109 illegal refining sites and arrested 24 economic saboteurs within two weeks in the South-South region.

The Director, Defence Media Operations, Maj.-Gen. Bernard Onyeuko, said this while briefing newsmen on the operations of the armed forces on Thursday in Abuja.

Onyeuko said the troops operating under Operation Octopus Grip, also discovered and destroyed 34 wooden boats, 150 storage tanks, 119 ovens and 104 dugout pits.

He said the troops also recovered 27 pumping machines, one weapon, one speed boat, 13 vehicles and seven outboard engine during the period.

He said the troops also recovered 4.3 million litres of crude oil, 2.05 million litres of diesel and 30,000 litres of kerosine.

According to him, troops also arrested 24 economic saboteurs, adding that all recovered items and apprehended suspects are handed over to the appropriate authorities.

Onyeuko said the Nigerian Navy Ship Okpabana on July 5, responded to a distress message and rescued a 16 metres surfer passenger boat MV Nue Swift belonging to a Lagos based oil servicing company.

According to him, the boat had lost her propelling ability at Agbara Platform while transiting from Forcados to Bonny Mooring and drifted for 32 hours before being rescued by own troops.

“Accordingly, the crew, the boat was handed over to the Forward Operations Base, Bonny on July 6,” he said.

In the South West, Onyeuko said the troops continued to fight crime and clamped down on smugglers in the border area of the zone.

He said the troops on July 3, recovered 61 of 25 litres jerricans of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) in a joint border patrol.

According to him, they intercepted two vehicles loaded with 163 fifty kilograms of foreign rice along Ifo-Abeokuta in Ifo Local Government Area and Ijimu-Tata in Imeko Afon Local Government Area of Ogun.

“All recovered items were handed over to the Nigerian Custom Service, Abeokuta.

While responding to questions, the Director of Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Jimmy Akpor, said activities of the oil thieves was a lose-lose situation for both the criminals and the government.

Akpor said the products impounded from the criminals were no longer useful, explaining that the products can neither be returned to the pipelines nor processed for use.

He solicited the cooperation of the public to protect the economic assets and also prevent the environment from being degraded.

Africa’s Fastest Man Gets Lifeline Ahead Of Championships

0

Africa’s fastest man Ferdinand Omanyala will be able to compete in the World Athletics Championships after being granted a last-minute visa to travel to the United States, his coach said Thursday.

“Omanyala was called to the ministry of sports this morning and was handed the visa to travel. He should be on the flight tonight to arrive in Oregon tomorrow morning,” coach Duncan Ayiemba told sporting media

“He will have a few hours to rest before he competes in the 100m heats (Friday), and hopefully qualify for the semi-finals and the finals.”

The 26-year-old Kenyan sprinter — the third-quickest man in the world this season — had given up hope of competing after failing to receive the travel visa necessary to reach the fixture in Eugene, Oregon.

Championship organisers Oregon22 and World Athletics on Wednesday said they were following up on visa issues for some athletes, adding the COVID-19 pandemic had made international travel more challenging.

Omanyala’s time of 9.85 seconds in May puts him behind only American duo Fred Kerley and Trayvon Bromell in times run this season.

In September last year, he set a new African record of 9.77sec, making him the ninth-fastest man ever.

He said in a recent interview he had set his sights on at least reaching the final of the 100m in Oregon, targeting a time of 9.6sec.
