Ajax Want 25m Bassey To Replace Martinez

0

Ajax have joined the hunt to sign Glasgow Rangers defender Calvin Bassey this summer, amid interest from numerous Premier League clubs.

Manchester United are closing in on a £46m deal for Ajax’s centre-back Lisandro Martinez and the Dutch champions are keen to spend some of their windfall on Bassey.

Brighton are also interested in the 22-year-old and both clubs are understood to have made offers for the versatile Bassey, though not ones that have yet satisfied Rangers.

Rangers have put a £25m price tag on Bassey, who is equally comfortable and effective at both left-back and centre-back, two of the positions Martinez has been deployed in for Ajax.

The former Leicester City defender has also been on Aston Villa’s radar, now managed by his former Gers boss Steven Gerrard.

Bassey joined Rangers from the Foxes in 2020 for just £230,000 and has shot to prominence this season, following a string of standout displays.

The Nigeria international produced numerous man-of-the-match performances including in the Europa League final against Frankfurt and Rangers’ Scottish Cup final triumph against Hearts.

Meanwhile, Rangers boss Giovanni Van Bronckhorst is a huge fan of the versatile left-back and has described the Nigerian’s development as “fantastic.”

Van Bronckhorst said on Gers pre-season tour, “Of course, the development of Calvin Bassey last season was fantastic.

“He can be very good. I always remember the first game we played at Hibs away and he had to come in because Leon Balogun went off.

“He came in and the first action he had was pressing in midfield and he’s a serious physical presence.

“The next day I saw him at the training ground and I remembered that action and I told him, ‘That is what I want from you when you play for us’.

“He is fantastic. Bassey is a player who is at the beginning of his career, but also a player who is open to coaching.

Transfers: Nigerian Forward Leaves Warring Russia

Super Eagles player, Chidera Ejuke, has left Russian side CSKA Moscow and signed on loan with Bundesliga side, Hertha Berlin.

Ejuke is the latest African player to leave the Russian Premier League after FIFA granted foreign players the caveat to suspend their contracts and move to other countries.

The 24-year-old left the Russian league that has been on hold for a couple of months due to the invasion of Ukraine.

According to media reports the major reason for this development is Super Eagles call-up.

Ejuke was part of Austin Eguavoen’s team during the last AFCON in Cameroon but was missing from new manager, Jose Peseiro’s two AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome.

“It was an important decision for Ejuke to go somewhere he can continue to make a career progression.

“He started well in the national team but has since fallen down the pecking order and been overlooked by the new Nigeria coach.

“If he moves somewhere and plays regularly, he will hopefully get back into the national team and continue his development.”

Meanwhile, Hertha Berlin’s Sporting Director Fredi Bobic believes Ejuke’s skill and knowledge of European leagues will be an asset to the German side.

“Chidera [Ejuke] has proved himself in several European leagues already, and brings good skills alongside speed and versatility. We’re sure that he’ll improve our game with his abilities.”

Ejuke said, “I’m looking forward to playing for Hertha, to the Bundesliga and this special challenge. I want to do my bit in helping the club achieve its goals.”

Ejuke scored 10 goals in 55 appearances during his two-year spell with the 13-time Russia champions.

Canadian Home Owners in Distress As BoC Announces Jumbo Interest Hike

0

The Bank of Canada’s surprise jumbo interest rate hike this week has jolted highly indebted consumers, who took out large mortgages during the pandemic but were less prepared for the sharp rise in borrowing costs than Bay Street investors.

Higher rates are also slamming the brakes on Canada’s once red-hot housing market which could slow spending on travel, dining out and others as consumers feel the pinch.

The central bank raised its policy rate by 100 basis points to 2.5% on Wednesday, its largest increase in nearly 24 years.

With inflation, hitting a four-decade high of 7.7% in May, the banks are promising more hikes are still to come.

Home resales and prices have been tumbling since the central bank embarked on a series of rate increases as it seeks to arrest inflation. On Wednesday, the Bank of Canada announced an increase of a full percentage point – more than the consensus estimate of 75 basis points – pushing its benchmark interest rate to 2.5 per cent from 1.5 per cent. It is the fourth consecutive interest rate increase since March, and the first time the bank has raised its rate by a full point since 1998.

The central bank said that unsustainably high housing prices have contributed to excess demand in the country’s economy and warned interest rates would have to rise further to cool demand and lower inflation.

Money markets are betting on three more increases this year to get the policy rate to 3.5%-3.75% by year-end.

“There’s going to be a lot of pain out there. And I think the bank is underestimating the risks to both housing and consumption,” said Stephen Brown, senior Canada economist at Capital Economics.

The moves have sent mortgage rates spiraling, a concern for Canadians with variable rate mortgages, which accounted for about 50% of new mortgage loans in Canada in May, compared with about 7% pre-pandemic, official data shows.

“I am distraught,” said Udit Kumar, who bought a suburban Toronto home this spring. The rate on his variable mortgage has already jumped from 1.84% to 3.4% in just a few months.

“We now find ourselves in a situation where the value of our houses might be going down and the mortgages are going up,” he said.

Most Canadians with variable mortgages have static payments: as rates go up the monthly installment stays the same but less principle gets paid. But about 20% of variable loans are not static – meaning each hike can add hundreds of dollars to a payment.

For example, a monthly payment of C$2,845 on a typical home will go up by C$323 because of the jumbo hike, according to Lowestrates.ca.

Toronto-area mortgage broker Ron Butler said he was already hearing from people worried about having to sacrifice groceries to pay their mortgages. But while the situation is painful for many, he does not foresee a wave of defaults due to Canada’s record low jobless rate, he said.

“In the history of banking in this country … rate increases have not had a massive impact on mortgage default. No matter how fast and no matter how big.”

However, Samantha Brookes, the chief executive of brokerage firm Mortgages of Canada said the bank was cognizant of the fact that some homebuyers, especially those who bought during the frenzy, might have “stretched to do so.”

She added that “There’s no doubt they’re being squeezed,”

Still, with social media full of people lamenting their suddenly supersized payments and plunging home values, real estate agents say Wednesday’s 100-bp hike has cast another chill over Canada’s already cooling housing market.

The average selling price in the Toronto area dropped 14.1% in June from February’s peak, reversing some of the region’s ‘pandemic gains’.

Brown of Capital Economics expects housing prices nationwide to fall about 20% peak-to-trough and he’s concerned the Bank of Canada is perhaps too quick to sacrifice the housing market in order to cool inflation.

But a chill may be just what the Bank of Canada is looking for. Senior Deputy Carolyn Rogers reiterated on Wednesday that restoring balance in the Canadian housing market would help curb the excess demand fanning inflation.

“And that’s what we’re aiming to do,” she said.

The Canadian government is still a long way from any conversations on what it is prepared to do if anything, for those unable to continue to pay the new mortgages.

Osun Election: INEC Begins Distribution Of Sensitive Materials

0

With the Osun governorship election barely 24 hours from now, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has commenced the distribution of sensitive materials to all the 30 local government areas of the state.

INEC officials moved the materials amid tight security on Thursday night at the commission’s headquarters located along Gbongan/Osogbo road.

While handing out the materials, the Osun State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Abdulganiy Raji said the electoral officers would take the items to their councils where they would be sent to the polling units on Saturday morning.

According to him, the move is to ensure efficient delivery of the items to the polling units on Saturday.

As part of their strategies to boost their chances in the polls, the dominant parties – the All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) – both held their mega rally to woo the electorates to vote for them.

While former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yusuff Lasun is the LP’s candidate, the PDP is fielding Senator Ademola Adeleke as its flagbearer with the incumbent Governor Gboyega Oyetola seeking re-election under the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Both men will slug it out on Saturday with the people of Osun State to decide who will govern them for the next four years.

2023: PDP Sues INEC, APC And Labour Party, Wants VP Candidates Barred

The Peoples Democratic Party has instituted a lawsuit at the Federal High Court in Abuja, praying the court to compel the Independent National Electoral Commission to prevent the Presidential Candidates of the All Progressives Congress, Bola Tinubu and Labour Party, Peter Obi, from replacing their running mates with Senator Kashim Shettima and Senator Datti Baba-Ahmed.

The PDP is also asking the court to declare that Tinubu and Obi be disqualified unless they contest alongside their previous running mates – Kabiru Masari and Doyin Okupe.

In the originating summons, the PDP is seeking an order barring the Independent National Electoral Commission from replacing the running mates of Tinubu and Obi.

Those listed as first to seventh respondents in the case are INEC, APC, Tinubu, Masari, Labour Party, Obi and Okupe, respectively.

The PDP is asking the court to determine if by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the constitution, Section 29(1), 31 and 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, and INEC’s timetable, Tinubu and Obi are bound by the submission of Masari and Okupe as their running mates.

The party also asked the court to determine if “by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Sections 29(1), 31, 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, the first defendant (INEC) can validly accept any change or substitution of the 4th (Masari) and 7th (Okupe) defendants as running mates of the 3rd (APC) and 6th (Labour Party) defendants.”

The PDP is also seeking five reliefs including a declaration that by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the constitution, Section 29(1), 31 and 33 of the Electoral Act 2022 and INEC’s timetable, both Tinubu and Obi must be bound by their submission.

The party asked the court to rule that both Tinubu and Obi will be disqualified the moment they substitute the names of their running mates.

One of the reliefs reads, “A declaration that by the combined interpretation of Section 142(1) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), Sections 29(1), 31, 33 of the Electoral Act 2022, the 1st defendant’s (INEC’s) election timetable, the 3rd (Tinubu) and 6th (Obi) cannot validly contest the 2023 Presidential election without the 4th (Masari) and 7th (Obi) respondents as their respective running mates.”

The PDP also based its argument on the fact that the term ‘placeholder’ is unknown to Nigerian law.

Court Orders Immediate Review Of Judges, Others’ Salaries

1

A National Industrial Court, Abuja on Friday ordered the Federal Government to put machinery in place for the immediate review of the salaries and allowances of the judicial officers in Nigeria.

Justice Osatohanmwen Obaseki-Osaghae who issued the order held that the current salaries and allowances of judicial officers in the country are not only abysmally low but embarrassing.

Justice Obaseki-Osaghae gave the order while delivering judgment in a suit filed against the Federal Government by Chief Sebastine Hon (SAN).

He ordered the Federal Government to commence a monthly payment of N10 million to the Chief Justice of Nigeria, N9 million to other Justices of the Supreme Court, N9 million to President of Court of Appeal.

Also, other Justices of the Appellate Court would get N8 million; Chief Judges of both Federal and States High Courts (N8 million), while Judges of the Federal and States High Courts would receive N7 million.

The Judge held that the refusal of the government to review the judicial officers’ salaries and allowances for 14 years was unconstitutional, unlawful and should be compelled to do the needful.

Justice Obaseki-Osaghae lamented that it was unfortunate that justices and judges who are ministers in the temple of justice have become victims of injustice in the country.

The Zambians drew level in the 70th minute after Avell Chitundu scored from close range before the both sides failed to find the target resulting in the shootout.

Senegal gaffer Mame Moussa Cissé made a couple of changes to the team that lost narrowly to host country Morocco in their last group game.

Mareme Babou, Anta Dembele, Ndeye Awa Diakhate and Nguenar Ndiaye were brought into the starting list for the Teranga Lionesses

And Ndiaye responded to the faith shown in her by the coach when she opened the scoring in the match in the 61st minute when she evaded her markers to fire home.

The Cooper Queens responded moments later as Chitundu pounced on a mistake by Senegalese goalkeeper Tenning Sene as the latter failed to deal with a freekick by Lushomo Mweemba.

The Zambians came close to getting another goal when Xiomara Mapepa fluffed a glorious chance after being put on goal by the skipper Grace Chanda with goalkeeper Sene.producing an outstanding save.

The extra-time was closely contested with both teams failing to find the back of the net

Van Gogh Self-Portrait Found Hidden Behind Another Painting

0

A previously unknown self-portrait of Vincent Van Gogh has been discovered behind another of the artist’s paintings, the National Galleries of Scotland said Thursday.

The self-portrait was found on the back of Van Gogh’s “Head of a Peasant Woman” when experts at the Edinburgh gallery took an X-ray of the canvas ahead of an upcoming exhibition. The work is believed to have been hidden for over a century, covered by layers of glue and cardboard when it was framed in the early 20th century.

Van Gogh was known for turning canvases around and painting on the other side to save money.

The portrait shows a bearded sitter in a brimmed hat. Experts said the subject was instantly recognizable as the artist himself, and is thought to be from his early work. The left ear is clearly visible and Van Gogh famously cut his off in 1888.

Frances Fowle, a senior curator at the National Galleries of Scotland, said the discovery was “thrilling.”

“Moments like this are incredibly rare,” she said. “We have discovered an unknown work by Vincent Van Gogh, one of the most important and popular artists in the world.”

The gallery said experts are evaluating how to remove the glue and cardboard without harming “Head of a Peasant Woman.”

Visitors to an upcoming Impressionist exhibit at the Royal Scottish Academy in Edinburgh can see an X-ray image of the self-portrait through a lightbox.

“A Taste for Impressionism” runs from Jul. 30 to Nov. 13.
