Eguavoen Hails Aribo’s Southampton Move

0

Former Super Eagles interim head coach, Augustine Eguavoen, has congratulated Nigerian midfielder, Joe Ayodele Aribo after the 25-year-old completed his move to Southampton FC.

Southampton, on Saturday, made Aribo her latest transfer summer signing after sealing a £10 million (plus add-ons) deal for the Super Eagles star from Glasgow

Three years ago, Aribo was scraping the bottom of the barrel in the English Football League with Charlton Athletic.

But fast forward to the present: Aribo has won a Scottish Premiership, lifted the Scottish Cup, scored in the Europa League final, and finally earned the chance to play in arguably the world’s most glamorous league.

Eguavoen saw firsthand the brilliance of the former Ibrox hero on the football pitch during the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations tournament in Cameroon earlier this year.

As interim manager, Eguavoen deployed Aribo in three of Nigeria’s four matches at the Championship before the Eagles crashed out in the knockout stages. The NFF Technical Director is in no doubt that Aribo is one of the most gifted football players on the continent. And he has backed his younger compatriot to prosper in his new home in England.

“Your work ethic, love, and passion for the game is clear for all to see. One of the finest midfield talents from Africa at the moment. I wish you the very best on the south coast.

“Go and Conquer, Aribo.”

Aribo registered 26 goals and 25 assists in 146 appearances for Rangers.

Disney To Loose Exclusive Rights To Mickey Mouse.

0

Disney could soon lose exclusive rights to long-time mascot Mickey Mouse and many more of its beloved characters.

Since his creation in 1928, mickey has become a known face of the troubled multi-billion dollar brand. But in 2024 – 95 years after his debut – the unassuming mouse will enter the public domain.

Under us copyright law, an ‘anonymous or pseudo-anonymous body of artistic work’ is only protected for 95 years, after which time it can be used freely.

But aspiring creatives looking to use the image are advised to beware as there could be serious legal caveats to using the cartoon. Mickey debuted in the black and white film ‘steamboat Willie’ in 1928.

Over the ensuing nine decades, his appearance changed: the first mickey had black eyes, small ears, and a pointy nose. He didn’t adopt his now-iconic red shorts until 1935.

It is only the early version of mickey that is entering the public domain. Later iterations of mickey are still under Disney copyright. They will enter the public domain at different points in the coming decades.

Disney holds Mickey Mouse trademarks for a variety of commercial uses. And while copyright is time-limited, trademarks are not.

“In the case of Mickey Mouse, for example, not only the name but also several drawings are registered trademarks,” writes Martin Senftleben in his 2020 book ‘The Copyright/Trademark Interface’.

“The combination of copyright and trademark claims has become a standard protection strategy in the field of contemporary cultural symbols,” Senftleben adds, “the coexisting trademark protection will be felt, however, once copyright expires.”

So, if it can be argued that a viewer would associate a new creation with the Disney brand, the company could theoretically sue.

Given the strength of the association between Mickey Mouse and Disney and given Disney’s reputation for being ruthless about protecting its intellectual property, many creators will be rightly hesitant to use Mickey’s image any time soon

Musk Finally Pulls Out Of Twitter Deal

0

Twitter shares plunged Monday after Elon Musk announced the withdrawal of his us$44 billion ($65 billion) takeover bid, setting the stage for a potential legal brawl.

Tesla chief’s first response since he made public his intention to ditch the offer on Friday because Twitter had breached multiple provisions of the merger agreement was done on Twitter.

Benchmark analyst mark Zgutowicz said “twitter’s board must contemplate the potential harm to its employee and shareholder base of any additional internal data exposed in litigation,”

It has been said that musk could put bots front and centre in the litigation if he defends against twitter’s lawsuit by claiming the company misrepresented the number of fake accounts.

According to Musk’s legal team, “Mr. Musk is terminating the Merger Agreement because Twitter is in material breach of multiple provisions of that Agreement [and] appears to have made false and misleading representations upon which Mr. Musk relied when entering into the Merger Agreement.” What does that actually mean? In short, Musk says Twitter underestimated the number of bots active on the platform.

However, many industry watchers think Musk has gotten cold feet for the deal since Twitter shares have sunk over 30% since the takeover was announced—making Musk’s $44 billion offer look like way too much to pay for the company.

Transfer: Onuachu Linked With Wolves Move

0

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu could be plying his trade in England next season having been linked with a move to English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers.

The  striker has been outstanding for Genk  in the last two seasons, but he could be on his way to the Molineux this summer

Onuachu has been a standout performer for the Limburgers in the last two seasons.

Two seasons ago, the Nigerian striker recorded 34 league goals and his exploits did not go unnoticed, as he was awarded the best player in Belgium.

After his achievement, the Super Eagles striker was expected to seal a move away from the club. However, despite links to Lyon, Arsenal, and West Ham, Genk kept him.

Onuachu never hid his desire to leave Genk for another club. But he has been professional about it.

The speculation surrounding the big Nigerian striker have not ended, as he also performed well last season.

Onuachu recorded 23 goals in 41 appearances last season.

Atletico Madrid, West Ham, and Fiorentina have all been linked to the towering striker. Nonetheless, they could face major competition, as SportsMole reports that Wolverhampton Wanderers are interested in Onuachu.

Bruno Lage’s side had a decent campaign last season. But they are looking to improve on that. Wolves are set to loan striker Fabio Silva to Anderlecht and would be shopping for a replacement.

Also, Onuachu could provide Wolves with another dimension. The 28-year-old is quite dogged and is dangerous in aerial situations.

Meanwhile, Onuachu averaged a much-more impressive 7.19 rating for his performances in Belgium; and while it is difficult to compare the two leagues given the difference in quality, he would certainly arrive at Molineux in confident goal-scoring form, which is exactly what Lage needs.

Still, for a move to go down, they would have to put down at least €20 million.he defending champions lost their opening match 2-1 to South Africa’s Banyana Banyana.

But the coach Randy Waldrum ladies bounced back beautifully with wins over Botswana (2-0) and Burundi (4-0) to finish as Group C runners-up.

The team will be lodged at the Novotel Hotel in Mohammedia ahead of the face-off against Cameroon.

The Super Falcons are chasing a tenth continental crown, having won the WAFCON trophy a record nine times.

The Nigerians have the most potent attack at the championship, with seven goals from their first three matches.

Bleeding in Menopause could be sign of Cancer -Gynaecologist

0

A Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology at the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Solomon Avidime, has said that older women who are still bleeding when they should be in their menopause should be thoroughly evaluated for cancers.

Bleeding by menopausal women, he cautioned, should not be taken lightly.

Prof. Avidime noted that women that have abnormal bleeding have to be thoroughly evaluated by a doctor to establish the exact cause of the bleeding, noting that the causes are diverse.

The causes, the expert said, range from causes around the uterus to causes that are outside the uterus.

The gynecologist who disclosed this during an interview  said women who are experiencing abnormal bleeding should seek help from health experts rather than go to unorthodox places.

According to the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, abnormal uterine bleeding is bleeding from the uterus that differs in frequency, regularity, duration, or amount from normal uterine bleeding in the absence of pregnancy.

Prof. Avidime also stated that women and girls experiencing abnormal bleeding should be worried, noting that a woman that is bleeding abnormally could go into shock because her blood level is depleting faster than it should.

The gynaecologist said, “Once the menses come more than once a month, women should see their doctor for evaluation.”

“Young women should talk to their doctor to know why they are bleeding abnormally. Older women have to worry because cancer can be an important cause.

Uterus

“Cancer can be in the cervix, it can also be in the womb. Cancer should be a concern to older women who are experiencing bleeding.

“Older women who are still bleeding when they should be in their menopause should be thoroughly evaluated for cancers. It should not be taken lightly. They must see a doctor quickly.

“So, every abnormal bleeding should be evaluated.”

The National Cancer Institute says women experiencing abnormal vaginal bleeding may undergo a transvaginal ultrasound, biopsy, or both, to determine if an endometrial tumor is a cause.

Speaking further with our correspondent, Prof. Avidime also said that a woman who is seeking pregnancy but is bleeding needs to go for an evaluation.

He advised women experiencing abnormal uterine bleeding to avoid self-medication, adding that they should also not go to traditional medicine practitioners to seek treatment.

According to him, some of the practitioners use toxic substances that could end up destroying their vaginas.

He warned that patronising traditional medicine practitioners in the management of abnormal uterine bleeding come with a lot of health consequences for the women.

In a 2018 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine, titled, “Association of Endometrial Cancer Risk With Postmenopausal Bleeding in Women. A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis”, the researchers said bleeding after menopause can be disconcerting.

“Early detection strategies focused on women with postmenopausal bleeding have the potential to capture as many as 90 percent of endometrial cancers; however, most women with postmenopausal bleeding will not be diagnosed with endometrial cancer.

“These results can aid in the assessment of the potential clinical value of new early detection markers and clinical management strategies for endometrial cancer and will help to inform clinical and epidemiologic risk prediction models to support decision making,” the authors said.

Birmingham Commonwealth Games: Nigerian Athletes Hit Games Village As Ogba Renders Account Of National Trials

0

The Games Village for Oregon 2022 World Athletics Championships will open today in Eugene, with Nigerian athletes expected to move in tomorrow ahead of the event billed to start on July 15.

United States-based board member and Performance Director of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Victor Okorie, told The Guardian, yesterday, shortly on arrival in Eugene that Nigerian athletes, who had been in camp in the city perfecting their strategies for the championship, would move into the Games Village tomorrow (July 13).

Okorie, who also heads AFN’s Liaison Department, left his base in Tennessee in the early hours of yesterday for Eugene. “I just arrived in Eugene a few hours ago and I am in contact with our athletes, who have been in camp here training for the World Championship. The Games Village will open tomorrow (today) and our athletes will move in on July 13,” Okorie stated.

He disclosed that Nigerian athletes are confident of success at the championships, which will run from July 15 to 25.

The AFN has a team of 24 athletes to fly Nigeria’s flag at the championship, but it was not clear, yesterday, if some of the athletes, who are in Nigeria, had got their visa to travel to the United States for the championship.

Meanwhile, the AFN National Trials Organising Committee has described as untrue the allegation of ‘mismanagement’ leveled against its chairman, Solomon Ogba, by the federation’s Athletes’ Representative, Henry Okorie.

A statement made available to The Guardian yesterday said Okorie raised a false alarm against Ogba, adding that athletes were not ‘treated with disdain’ during the national trials in Benin City.

Okorie had petitioned the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare, accusing the chairman of the organising committee, Ogba, of treating athletes with ‘disdain’

“Our attention has been drawn to the petition written by Henry Okorie, the Athletes Representative on the board of AFN, accusing the chairman of the organising committee for the championships of not respecting the athletes.

“While we feel it is not necessary to join issues with Okorie, who, as a member of the executive board of the AFN, should be abreast of development in the federation, especially the organisation of the event, it is, however, necessary we put the record straight for posterity to judge us,” the statement signed by Ogba, reads.

“Okorie pretended not to know that the committee was charged with the responsibility of raising funds for the organisation of the championships.

“The committee was able to raise N10m for the championships, while Edo State government took care of accommodation, which Okorie allocated to the athletes.

“The N10m raised was not even enough to pay for the flight tickets of the Ghana and Benin relay teams invited for the championships as well as some of our foreign based athletes.

“Okorie should have endeavoured to find out how the committee managed to accomplish the task with just N10m. If he must know, the chairman of the committee he desperately tried to malign used some of his personal money to offset some of the expenses incurred, including the money Okorie collected for the feeding of some of the athletes. He should also know that the AFN president and the Delta state Sports Commission also came in to rescue the committee,” Ogba stated.

Edo Plans 15 Local Competitions, Recommits To Sports Development

0

The Edo State government has disclosed plans to host local tournaments for 15 sporting competitions in line with the government’s sports development drive.

Edo State Acting Governor, Philip Shaibu, said in Benin City, yesterday, that the government plans to harness the full sporting potential of its youthful population and create jobs through sports.

He said over 50,000 job opportunities would be created through the 15 competitions, which, he added, would ensure positive engagement for youths in the state.

Shaibu said: “The easiest way to deal with youths’ restiveness and unemployment is to engage the youths in sporting activities.”

The acting governor said the Edo league would begin in January 2023 and called for the support of all stakeholders, including private organisations to ensure the realisation of the project.

Reassuring support for private organisations and other businesses, Shaibu noted: “Our cardinal focus is to make sure that the private sector drives the economy of the state. We are repositioning the government to create an environment for businesses to thrive.

“We are commencing a flagship programme for the 15 sports in January 2023. This will enable us to give our youths a new lease of life and positively engage them so that they would not be available for anti-social activities.”

The Nigeria Senior Handball Men’s Team, on Monday, lost their first match against Tunisia 18-30 in the ongoing 2022 Africa Men Handball Senior Championship in Egypt. The Nigeria team also known as the Golden Arrows fought hard in the first half, but lost with one point difference 13-14.

Nigeria dropped the magic of the first half and made several mistakes and turnovers in the second half which allowed the Tunisians to punish them with an emphatic 30-18 victory.

The Head Coach of the team Rafiu Salami said his team didn’t take their chances and allowed incessant turnovers which made the Tunisians to be ahead in large period of the match.

“We had a game plan and they adhered to it and that was why we played well in the first half.

“But in the second half, we were too eager to score which caused the turnovers and then we were too scared to play because we were playing to concede goals instead of playing to win,” Coach Salami said

The coach said the team would do better against Cape Verde as this was the first top side they would play aside the Abuja based clubs.

“All hope is not lost as I believe we will do better against Cape Verde who by the way are a very good side.

”I believe we will come through and do everything possible to win,” he said

NNigeria will play Cape Verde on Tuesday and a victory may be good enough for the Golden Arrows to get into the quarter-finals.

Nigeria is classified in group C alongside Tunisia and Cape Verde.

The competition will also serve as an African qualifiers tournament for the 2023 World Men’s Handball Championship in Poland and Sweden.

The first five countries will represent the continent in the World Cup.

The Golden Arrows finished in the 10th position in the last edition in Tunisia.

The 25th edition of the African Men’s Handball Championship will end in Egypt on July 19.

I’Ll Fight Joshua For Free –Fury

0

Tyson Fury has apparently had a change of heart on his retirement after he claimed he was willing to put his retirement on hold to fight Anthony Joshua for free at Wembley Stadium.

Following his win over Dillian Whyte at England’s national stadium in April, the 33-year-old has since insisted that he is now retired from the sport.

However, he has now said that as long as certain conditions are met, he will finally settle the score with Joshua.

“Mr Businessman, he’s not a fighting man. I swear to God I hope he wins the fight against Usyk so I can come out of retirement and fight him for free,’ Fury told fans at his After Party tour at the Stockton Globe on Saturday night.

“However, the terms are this: I want it at Wembley Stadium, I want it free to enter and I want it free-to-air television in this country.”

Joshua is due to rematch Oleksandr Usyk on August 20 as he looks to regain his world titles from the Ukrainian after losing them last September.

The bout is set to take place in Saudi Arabia, and Fury criticised Joshua for not putting the fight on in the UK.

“I mean what I’m saying, I’ll fight him for free in England. Not in a foreign country for more money. Here, for free, for the people,” he added.

Fury has previously appeared on a WWE pay-per-view show in Saudi Arabia, but has never boxed in the country.

Fury is yet to give up his WBC title or Ring Magazine belt, and appears to be keeping his options open for now.

WBC president Mauricio Sulaiman has said that Fury will not be rushed into making a decision on his future, leaving the door open for the unbeaten Englishman to face Joshua or Usyk at some point.
