Egypt Appoints Ex-Benfica Coach Vitoria As National Team Coach

0

Egypt has named Rui Vitoria, formerly of Portugal’s Benfica, as the coach for its national team after Ehab Galal was sacked, according to a statement on Tuesday.

“The Egyptian Football Association has reached a final deal with Portuguese Rui Vitoria to lead the Egyptian national team for the next four years,” the association wrote on Twitter.

Egyptian media reports said the Portuguese coach, who led Benfica to the Primeira Liga title in 2016 and 2017, would earn 2.4 million euros annually under the contract.

Former coach Galal was dismissed on June 16 after the Pharaohs slipped to a shock 2-0 defeat by Ethiopia in the qualifiers for the upcoming African Cup of Nations.

His stint lasted a mere two months after taking over from Carlos Queiroz who led Egypt to the AFCON final which they lost to Senegal in February.

Egypt lost to Senegal again under Queiroz in the African play-off for a place at the Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.

ASUU Strike: Ahmed Musa Slams Politicians

0

Super Eagles captain, Ahmed Musa, has slammed Nigerian politicians over the continued strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities.

Musa slammed the politicians on his Instagram handle on Tuesday and asked how they felt when they travelled abroad to visit their children’s schools, while Nigerian students were stuck at home.

ASUU strike has entered its fifth month, with resumption not in sight as the lecturers are yet to change demands to the Federal Government.

On Monday, during his visit to Daura, Katsina State, for the Eid-el-Kabir celebrations, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), bemoaned the strike action saying enough is enough for keeping students at home.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations winner, however, took a swipe at youths who sing praises of the politicians despite being away from their studies due to the strike.

“To our political office holders whose children school abroad. How do you feel visiting your children abroad, taking pictures in their schools and posting it online while ASUU is on strike?

“Like seriously, how is it okay to you? You are running a system you don’t even believe in.

“Show me one oyibo leader whose child is schooling in Nigeria. E no dey touch una?

“And when you return Nigerian youths will still gather and sing praises for una,” Musa wrote.

WAFCON 2022: World Cup Spots Up For Grabs At Quarter Finals Duels

0

The group stages are done and dusted. Eight teams have progressed to the quarterfinals of the 2022  Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, as we reach the business end of the tournament.

Morocco vs Botswana

The hosts have been perfect in the tournament so far, grinding their way through their Group A matches and amassing nine points, scoring five goals and conceding just once, to top the table and book a place in the quarterfinals.

Captain Ghizlane Chebbak is the current leading goal scorer at the tournament with three goals – all from set pieces – two penalties and a free kick that have elevated the Atlas Lionesses as one of the title contenders in this tournament. She is leading by example.

Against Botswana, Chebbak and Morocco will be up against one of the fastest teams at the tournament. The Mares pride themselves in counterattacks with the incredible Refilwe Tholakele at the center of their attacks and she will be hoping to bring her A game to the hosts on Wednesday at the Moulay Abdellah Sports Complex in Rabat.

Botswana head coach Gaoletlhoo Nkutkwisang has been spoken widely about and she likes coming up against big coaches and in this case they don’t come much bigger than Reynald Pedros – a two-time UEFA Women’s Champions League winner with Olympique Lyon.

This tactical battle is one to look out for in this fixture.

Cameroon vs Nigeria

As far as football rivalries are concerned, this is one of the richest on the continent and this cuts across both women and men’s categories.

Ahead of this quarter final matchup which is a repeat of the 2016 final in Yaounde, this derby is expected to produce fireworks. Both are physical and athletic teams that will need to dig deep to progress to the next level.

Nigeria come into this one as the favourites to win, courtesy of their pedigree at this tournament – having won nine titles and having also scored the most tournament goals so far – seven to be exact.

On the other hand, Cameroon started slowly with a goalless draw against Zambia, but have since found their feet in the tournament and can now be taken seriously as title contenders.

This one is a must-watch!

Zambia vs Senegal

First timers. Both Zambia and Senegal had never gone past the group stages at the WAFCON, but at this year’s edition their hard work from many years of building and rebuilding has finally paid off.

With places at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand guaranteed for the semifinalists, a lot is at stake for both teams.

Captain Grace Chanda has been in fine form scoring a brace so far at the tournament, but against Senegal the Copper Queens face one of the best defences in the tournament. The Teranga Lionesses have only conceded once so far – a penalty scored by Morocco’s Ghizlane Chebbak.

Zambia too have let in just one goal and will be looking to continue with their impressive setup at the back when they face the West Africans.

This is expected to be a very fast-paced team, as both teams like to counter attack and also fall back when they lose the ball.

South Africa vs Tunisia

Thorough. The 2018 finalists South Africa come into this one as one of two sides that won all their group stage games, amassing nine points.

Even without poster girl Thembi Kgatlana, who is out of the tournament due to injury, Banyana Banyana have enough firepower to overcome Tunisia.

Captain Refiloe Jane, Linda Motlhalo and Andile Dlamini have been some of the standout players for Desiree Ellis’ side, bringing experience and exposure into the team setup and should worry the North Africans.

However, the Carthage Eagles who have found solace in the individual brilliance of Mariem Houji will be out for blood. They are playing at the WAFCON for only the second time and can smell a place at the World Cup. This is a do or die matchup for them as they seek to write history.

The contrast in styles of play will be interesting to look out for on Thursday.

Rasheedat Ajibade and Osinachi Ohale

Two Super Falcon players are in the WAFCON best eleven list just released by CAF.

Nigeria’s fantastic Rasheedat Ajibade marauds down the wing with Cameroon’s Ajara Nchout on the other flank providing plenty of firepower down the other flank.

Botswana’s Refilwe Tholakele gets the nod for the striker’s spot highest up on the pitch in tandem with the impressive attacking qualities of Zambia’s Grace Chanda just behind her in what is a formidable tournament Best XI to date.

As the tournament reaches its business end, these players will be crucial in needing to step up as their countries look to secure a coveted FIFA Women’s World Cup in their quarterfinal fixtures.

The TSG is comprised of Clementine Toure (Cote d’Ivoire head coach), Radia Fertoul (Algeria head coach), Jacqui Shipanga (Namibia Technical Director), Shilene Booysen (South Sudan head coach), Mercy Tagoe (Ghana head coach) and Amani Boukare (Tunisia U20 head coach and senior team assistant coach).

Funke Akindele Named PDP Lagos Deputy Governorship Candidate

0

Nollywood actress, Funke Akindele, has been named the Peoples Democratic Party deputy governorship candidate of Lagos State.

The actress confirmed her deputy governorship candidacy in a video on her verified Instagram page on Tuesday.

With this position, she had become the running mate of the PDP Lagos State governorship candidate, Olajide Adediran, popularly called Jandor.

In the video she posted on Tuesday, she revealed her reasons for becoming a running mate.

She said, “I saw it as an opportunity to help liberate and improve the wellbeing of our people, particularly the deprived youth, women and the girl child.

“My decision is not just to accept this huge responsibility but to also work tirelessly and complement Jandor’s burning desire to see our dear Lagos live up to its full potentials.”

Meanwhile, when she said her name at the end of the video, the Ikorodu-born indigene of Lagos didn’t include her husband’s name, Bello.

This comes two weeks after her husband, Abdulrasheed Bello, popularly known as JJC Skillz, announced that they have gone their separate ways.

Bello, who confirmed the separation in an Instagram post on July 1, said things had not been going well between him and the actress in the last two years, adding that all efforts expended on reconciling their differences had proved abortive.

The actress, however, has remained silent on her separation from her husband as she is yet to address Bello’s claims.

Ronaldo Not For Sale, Remains In Manchester United’s Plans – Ten Hag

0

Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale and is very much in the club’s plans this season, new manager Erik ten Hag said on Monday, stressing he had “a really good talk” with the Portuguese forward before going on tour.

The 37-year-old’s future at Old Trafford is the subject of intense speculation after he reportedly told the club he wanted to leave so he can play in the Champions League.

Ronaldo did not join the squad for the pre-season tour starting in Thailand, citing family issues, and Ten Hag’s news conference ahead of Tuesday’s friendly with English rivals Liverpool was dominated by questions about the player’s future.

“We are planning with Cristiano Ronaldo for this season, so that’s it, I’m looking forward to working with him,” Ten Hag said.

“Cristiano Ronaldo is not for sale. Cristiano is in our plans and we want to get success together.”

The Dutchman declined to say what was discussed or if Ronaldo accepted he would remain at the club this season. Ronaldo has a year left on his contract.

“I spoke with him before this issue came up. I had a conversation and a really good talk,” he said.

Asked to elaborate, Ten Hag said: “That is between Cristiano and me. Only what I can confirm is we had real good conversation together.”

Ten Hag is sticking with Harry Maguire as captain, with the England defender part of a 31-member squad in Bangkok that includes new signing Tyrell Malacia, who joined from Feyenoord and is the club’s only new addition so far.

The United boss said the World Cup scheduling meant clubs would need more players than a normal season. He declined to discuss other targets.

“We want to have the right players,” he said. “We have a really good squad working hard to develop our way of play. If the opportunity is there we will strike.”

He added: “The rest, we know what we want, we not only want new players, but the right players.”

Fertility expert says frozen Sperm effective as fresh Sperm

0

President, Academy of Medicine Specialties and Secretary-General of the International Federation of Fertility Societies, Prof Oladapo Ashiru, says there are no significant differences between fresh sperm and frozen sperm used for Assisted Reproductive Technology.

Prof Ashiru said frozen sperm would not interfere with the fertilisation and clinical pregnancy rates.

He said with intrauterine insemination and in vitro fertilisation, one has a better chance of clearing hurdles along the path to pregnancy.

Speaking with Newsmen, Ashiru said studies have also shown no difference between fresh sperm and frozen sperm in ART.

“It was reported by a group from Mayo Clinic Rochester in 2004 that couples using in vitro fertilisation have the same likelihood of successful pregnancy whether the sperm used is frozen or fresh.

“A study from Egypt in 2021 showed that using frozen testicular sperm from men with non-obstructive azoospermia results in fertilisation and clinical pregnancy rates similar to those of fresh sperm. It may encourage fertility centres to use frozen testicular sperm samples, as this policy has certain advantages that would help organise their workflow.

“Another study from New York in over 6,000 couples showed that using fresh compared to frozen ejaculated sperm has no impact on fresh embryo transfer cycle reproductive outcomes.

“In a study conducted using first fresh embryo transfer cycles at a single high-volume academic institution between 2013 and 2019. In our Medical Art Center Clinic, we have observed no significant difference between frozen and fresh samples since 1994,” he said.

According to the fertility expert, the sperm freeze procedure freezes sperm cells to preserve them for future use.

“To begin, the embryologist verifies that the sample belongs to the appropriate patient and evaluates the volume of the sample, along with the sperm concentration, motility, and progression. The sample is then placed into a tube and combined with a sperm cryopreservation media.

“Once the sample is equilibrated, it is evenly distributed among pre-labelled cryopreservation vials, including a test thaw vial, and placed into a liquid nitrogen vapour, and later, into liquid nitrogen storage. Once the samples have been frozen, the test vial is thawed to ensure the survivability of the sperm. The process enables the sperm to be safely stored in liquid nitrogen for many years.

“The procedure that makes it possible to stabilise the cells at cryogenic temperatures is called cryopreservation, also known as an applied aspect of cryobiology or the study of life at low temperatures. Many advances in cryopreservation technology have led to the development of methods that allow for low-temperature maintenance of various cell types, including male and female gametes, tiny multicellular organisms, and even more complex organisms such as embryos.

“Cryopreservation of human spermatozoa introduced in the 1960s has overcome many space and time limitations and now forms an integral part of assisted reproduction technologies.”

He said this technique becomes important in cases of male fertility preservation before radiotherapy or chemotherapy, which may lead to testicular failure or ejaculatory dysfunction.

“Semen cryostorage seems to be the only proven method that may offer these couples a chance to have future children. Cancer therapy could lead to damage, resulting in sub-fertility or sterility due to gonad removal or permanent damage to germ cells caused by adjuvant treatment.

“In particular, the risk associated with therapy depends on several factors: the patient’s age at the time of treatment, the dose, site, and type of treatment. Also, some non-malignant diseases, such as diabetes and autoimmune disorders, may lead to testicular damage. Cryopreservation is also advisable in these conditions. In countries where heterologous (donor egg)) fertilisation is allowed by law, and in donor insemination programmes, cryopreservation is necessary to have enough time to screen donors for infectious agents, such as the HIV and hepatitis B viruses, before the cryopreserved semen is used for clinical purposes. In azoospermic patients, who have undergone testicular sperm extraction or percutaneous epididymal sperm aspiration, sperm cryostorage is also used to avoid repeated biopsies or aspirations.

“Furthermore, cryopreservation is routinely performed in patients who have to start ART and decide to preemptively freeze the semen sample to avoid inconveniences due to failed ejaculation often associated with ‘semen collection stress,’ certain emotional states, or other commitments at the time of oocyte retrieval,” he noted.

He added that male gamete freezing is primarily recommended to preserve fertility in those subjects who, for one reason or another, are exposed to potentially toxic agents, which may interfere with the sperm production mechanism.

The Falcons are talking tough ahead of the crunch quarter-final clash against the Indomitable Lionesses

The Nigeria national women’s team on Monday arrived in Casablanca from Rabat ahead of their quarter-final tie against Cameroon at the ongoing Women’s Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The Nigeria women’s team announced their arrival in the Moroccan city via a tweet on their official handle

The team wrote: “Hi Casablanca, We’ve arrived safely in Casablanca in the build-up to our #WAFCON2022 quarterfinal showdown with Cameroon on Thursday, July 14.

“On arrival, we were immediately lodged at Novotel Hotel in Mohammedia.”

The Super Falcons who played all of their group games in the capital city of Rabat will on Thursday, July 14, face the Indomitable Lionesses in an anticipated crunch quarter-final contest.

Both the Super Falcons and Lionesses finished as runners-up in their groups with 6 points and 5, respectively.

With a place at next year’s Women’s World Cup guaranteed for all four semi-finalists, the stakes are indeed high for Thursday’s tie and the Super Falcons players are already talking tough

“We are at a crucial stage of the tournament so it was very important for us to play the way we did and we know how much it means to us.

“We have now qualified for the quarterfinals and we are ready for the challenge ahead,” Ohale Osinachi who was voted as the woman of the match in the game against Burundi told CAF Online.

“We have grown from strength to strength from when we played our first game and this was a good show tonight (Sunday). We want to continue to improve and get better. Our target is to win the trophy and we are getting closer,” she added

Nigeria and Cameroon faced each other in the final of the 2016 edition, with the Falcons coming off 1-0 winners.

Two years later, the Super Falcons defeated Cameroon again this time in the semi-finals, thanks to a penalty shootout victory.

Many will be eager to see how Thursday’s contest will pan out.

Beach Volleyball Tour: Nigeria Targets Paris 2024 Olympic Qualification

0

Nigeria will attend the African Senior Beach Nations Cup in Morocco at the end of July.

The Chairman of the Nigerian Beach Volleyball Commission  Musa Nimrod says the Federation is working round the clock to ensure Nigeria does not miss the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Nimrod stated this at the recently held National Beach Volleyball Tour (Round 1) in Yola, Adamawa State.

He said the beach volleyball tour will ensure Nigeria players are fit before major African Championships and International outings.

Nimrod, a member of the Confederation of African Beach Volleyball Commission said, “the Nigeria Beach Volleyball Commission decided to commence the National Beach Volleyball Tour this year because the aim is for Nigeria to qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics.

“Nigeria narrowly missed participating in the Olympics twice; Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020. Nigeria placed second in 2016 behind Egypt and second in 2020 behind Kenya.

“The Federation is trying to give new players the opportunity to make the country proud and coming to Yola for the Round 1 of the National Beach Volleyball Tour is not a mistake, it is by divine intervention.”

The President of the Nigeria Volleyball Federation (NVBF) told Nigerians to expect more explosive performances in the second and third rounds later this year.
