Nigeria requires over 350m trees yearly to check deforestation – NCF

0

The Nigerian Conservation Foundation says that Nigeria needs to plant over 350 million trees annually to check deforestation.

The Director-General, NCF, Dr. Muhtari Aminu-Kano, said this at the 20th memorial lecture in honour of Chief Lawal Edu, Nigeria’s foremost environmental advocate, on Wednesday in Lagos.

Aminu-Kano said that Nigeria was losing 350,000 to 400,000 hectares of forest every year with a lot of consequences for climate change and rising temperature levels.

“We have to plant many hectares to stand still. And we can just aim to stand still at five per cent of our forests the way we are.

”But even if we are to stand still, 350,000 hectares of forest land will require 350 million trees per year for us to remain where we are.

“So, you can see that we need to plant more than 350 million trees if we want to begin to increase our forest cover at all,” he said.

Aminu-Kano also said that the NCF was passionate about its major flagship project called “Green Recovery Nigeria,” which entailed actual reforestation.

He noted that the project was targeted at restoring the forests Nigeria had lost since independence.

According to him, the nation has lost its forest cover from about 35 per cent to less than five per cent.

“And that means we have to plant the right trees in the right places and the right quantities.

“If we are to have forests that will continue to provide services that trees and forests provide us like clean air, clean water, food, medicine, fiber and livestock feed.

”And all sorts of things that will continue to regulate and replenish our soils as well as our freshwater sources, then we must act now,” he said.

On the theme of the lecture, “Only One Earth,” Aminu-Kano said that Nigeria’s population was growing rapidly with over 200 million people competing for scarce resources.

“Our numbers are ballooning and our demand on our natural resources is incredibly high.

“It’s not only just that human beings have only one earth and no more, but that we have to live within the resources of that.

“But it is also that Nigeria has only one space of the Nigeria map that we can live in and only those natural resources that can sustain us.

“So, if we consume more than what is there or consume more than what we are producing, then we are leading ourselves toward collapse,” he said.

The director-general stressed that Nigerians should learn to live within their means.

He noted that part of living sustainably was to plan the nation’s development within the limits of its available resources.

“Forests are not limitless, our waters are not limitless, and the air can be polluted and be made less conducive for human beings.

“We need to work within those limits that the planet and the climate have defined for us.

“We cannot keep consuming forever and think we are going to sustain ourselves, no.

“The more we consume without replenishing, without looking at the wise use of resources, the more we are likely to lead to catastrophe and go beyond the limits of what our environment can sustain,” Aminu-Kano said.

He said that for 40 years, the NCF had been celebrating the achievements of people trying to live in harmony with nature.

He added that the foundation had been a catalyst in sustainable living and development in harmony with nature.

Massive leak reveals top politicians secretly helped Uber

0

Thousands of leaked files have exposed how Uber courted top politicians, and how far it went to avoid justice.

They detail the extensive help Uber got from leaders such as Emmanuel Macron and ex-EU commissioner Neelie Kroes.

They also show how the taxi firm’s former boss personally ordered the use of a “kill switch” to prevent raiding police from accessing computers.

Uber says its “past behaviour wasn’t in line with present values” and it is a “different company” today.

The Uber Files are a trove of more than 124,000 records, including 83,000 emails and 1,000 other files involving conversations, spanning 2013 to 2017.

They were leaked to the Guardian, and shared with the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists and a number of media organisations including BBC Panorama. They reveal, for the first time, how a $90m-a-year lobbying and public relations effort recruited friendly politicians to help in its campaign to disrupt Europe’s taxi industry.

Nigeria risks Sri Lanka’s fate as economy creaks

0

Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, risks suffering the same fate as Sri Lanka as the lack of reforms in several sectors continues to put a lid on economic growth.

In Colombo, the capital of Sri Lanka, cooking gas cylinder is scarce, prices are out of control and social unrest has spilled onto the streets.

The economic crisis in Sri Lanka is spiralling into a humanitarian emergency as millions of people face acute shortages of food, fuel, cooking gas and medicine, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent warned on Friday.

But Sri Lanka’s economic woes did not just start overnight. It is the result of several years of a political crisis that has snowballed into financial crises and severe shortages of food, fuel, electricity, and medicine.

Why Life expectancy of Nigerian women remains low – Gynaecologist

Nigerian Women

An Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, Kano State, Dr. Labaran Aliyu, has stated that life expectancy of women in Nigeria will remain low until the government addresses poverty and illiteracy.

Dr. Aliyu says though there are many reasons for the low life expectancy of women in the country, the most important two are illiteracy and poverty.

Speaking in an interview, the gynecologist identified poverty and illiteracy as the root causes of low life expectancy in women.

According to the 2020 World Population Data Sheet, the life expectancy of females in the country is 56 years while that of males is 54 even as the national figure was put at 55 years in a population of over 200m people.

The maternal health expert explained, “There are many reasons for the low life expectancy of our women, but the most important two are illiteracy and poverty. Whatever reason you want to look at, you will ultimately come back to these two. So these are the root causes.

“In a poor family for example, if a woman is pregnant and develops complications and there are no resources to access healthcare, what will be the result? She will die from the complications.

“Although, sometimes, it is not about not having enough resources to access healthcare, but because of Illiteracy, many don’t know what to do when they are sick or what not to do to get better.”

According to the gynaecologist, looking at Illiteracy in the context of maternal health, it is important women know what they need to eat to be healthy.

“A lot of cases that we see in the hospitals and even in the communities are evidence of Illiteracy. For instance, if a woman is sick in the family and the sickness has a diagnosis, you can say this is the cause of that sickness. But because of illiteracy, it will be attributed to some other trivial issues based on the belief in the community.

“She will stop seeking care from the health providers and the sickness will worsen, ultimately she will die of the disease”, he said.

Aliyu maintained that the poverty rate in the country is too high, stressing that if the issues are not properly addressed, a lot of women will continue to die from preventable causes and life expectancy will remain low.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics in its Poverty and Inequality report 2019, 1 in 10 or more than 82.9 million Nigerians live in poverty.

Also, the World Bank says 96 million Nigerians will be living in poverty by 2022.

Besides poverty and Illiteracy, the maternal health expert identified high fertility rates and poor nutrition as other factors responsible for the low life expectancy of women in Nigeria.

“Our fertility rate is very high. The fertility rate is part of the problem because the more children the women have, the less they have to cater for themselves.

“Again, in some communities that don’t accept family planning, women in such communities keep having children and exposing their lives to risk,” the associate professor said.

On what could be done to improve the life expectancy of women in Nigeria, Aliyu said the government has a role to play and the best role they can play is by providing an enabling environment for people to earn a decent living.

“If the government cannot provide jobs, they should provide an enabling environment by which individuals can be engaged in a specific trade.

“The government should provide training for people to enable them to have a vocation. Education is key. So, the government should make education free, available and accessible for women.

“We need community education, that is creating awareness in the communities”, he said.

China’s Support For Russia Complicates Relations With US – Blinken

0

China’s support for Russia’s war in Ukraine is complicating U.S.-Chinese relations at a time when they are already beset by rifts and enmity over numerous other issues, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told his Chinese counterpart on Saturday.

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi blamed the U.S. for the downturn in relations and said that American policy has been derailed by what he called a misperception of China as a threat.

“Many people believe that the United States is suffering from a China-phobia,” he said, according to a Chinese statement. “If such threat-expansion is allowed to grow, U.S. policy toward China will be a dead end with no way out.”

In five hours of talks in their first-to-face meeting since October, Blinken said he expressed deep concern about China’s stance on Russia’s actions in Ukraine and did not believe Beijing’s protestations that it is neutral in the conflict.

The talks had been arranged in a new effort to try to rein in or at least manage rampant hostility that has come to define recent relations between Washington and Beijing.

“We are concerned about the PRC’s alignment with Russia,” Blinken told reporters after the meeting in the Indonesian resort of Bali. He said it is difficult to be “neutral” in a conflict in which there is a clear aggressor but that even it were possible, “I don’t believe China is acting in a way that is neutral.”

The Chinese statement said the two sides had an in-depth exchange of views on Ukraine but provided no details.

The Biden administration had hoped that China, with its long history of opposing what it sees as interference in its own internal affairs, would take a similar position with Russia and Ukraine. But it has not, choosing instead what U.S. officials see as a hybrid position that is damaging the international rules-based order.

Blinken said every nation, China included, stands to lose if that order is eroded.
