Copenhagen Mall Shooting: Danish Police Suspects Terrorism

0

Danish police have arrested a 22-year-old man in connection with a deadly shooting at a Copenhagen shopping mall.

Police chief Soeren Thomassen said the motive was unclear, but that he could not rule out an “act of terrorism”.

Mr Thomassen said several people had been killed in Sunday’s shooting, adding it was too early to provide exact figures.

Eyewitnesses have spoken of panic among shoppers as gunfire rang out inside the Field’s mall in the south of the city.

Emilie Jeppesen told Jyllands-Posten newspaper: “You didn’t know what was happening. Suddenly there was just chaos everywhere.”

Speaking at a news conference on Sunday evening, Mr Thomassen said it was too early to say how many people had been harmed in the attack.

But he told reporters that there was no indication that other attackers were involved and urged shop owners to preserve any video surveillance footage they might have.

He described the man detained as an “ethnic Dane”.

Field’s is said to be the largest shopping centre in Denmark, with over 140 shops and restaurants.

The multi-storey mall is located on the outskirts of Copenhagen, just across from a subway line that connects to the city centre.

A concert British singer Harry Styles was due to perform at a venue less than a mile from the scene has now been cancelled.

Writing on Snapchat, Styles said: “My team and I pray for everyone involved in the Copenhagen shopping mall shooting. I am shocked. Love H.”

Osun Electoral Misconduct: Law Must Take Its Course Says NYSC

0

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has assured that it would do all that is necessary to ensure that “the law takes its course” regarding the alleged electoral misconduct involving a corps member, Orji Desmond Nkenna, in Osun state.

The NYSC gave the assurance on Sunday in a statement signed by its Director, Press and Public Relations, Eddy Megwa, in Abuja.

Nkenna was alleged to have manipulated the ongoing distribution of Permanent Voter Cards in Osu, Osun State.

According to the police, 38 PVCs were recovered from the corps member after he was accused of giving the PVC belonging to a particular voter to another person.

Miffed by Nkenna’s alleged misconduct, the NYSC management described it as a debasing and atrocious act, adding that the law should be invoked, if he is found guilty.

The statement reads in part, “The attention of the Management of National Youth Service Corps has been drawn to a trending news on social media over electoral misconduct involving an INEC staff, a Corps Member and others.

“It is rather unfortunate that corps member Orji Desmond Nkenna who is one of the accused persons could debase himself into such an atrocious act.

“We have also noted that the case is under investigation. If found guilty, the law should be invoked accordingly.

“The NYSC as a responsible youth-moulding organisation hereby dissociates itself from such unpatriotic act of the culprits. We also in NYSC condemn the act in totality.”

Megwa noted that the involvement of corps members in previous elections in the country was borne out of their track record of impeccable performances in several previous national assignments, adding that the Scheme was proud of the corps members who had stuck to the rules in the line of performing salient national duties.

“All corps members right from the Orientation Camps are always sensitized by NYSC and INEC officials on their roles during elections, including the statutory sanctions if they violate the electoral laws.

“Consequently any corps member that engages himself in any form of electoral offence must squarely face the wrath of the law as stipulated in the electoral act.

“NYSC would continue to play its role of promoting the unity and integration of the country, as it has been doing in its almost fifty years of existence.

“With the 2023 general elections around the corner, the NYSC would not relent in consolidating the long existing partnership with INEC towards ensuring a free, fair and credible election to the delight of all Nigerians and the world at large,” he added.

Israel Adesanya outpointed Jared Cannonier over five rounds to retain his middleweight title at UFC 276 in Las Vegas.

Adesanya, 32, used his superior movement and control of distance to out-strike Cannonier and secure a unanimous decision victory.

Following the win, the New Zealander called out Alex Pereira, who beat Sean Strickland earlier in the night.

“We know who’s next. I’ll put him on skates,” said Adesanya.

The fight has a backstory in that the Brazilian holds two victories over Adesanya in kickboxing before the pair transitioned to MMA.

In the co-main event, Alexander Volkanovski retained his featherweight title with a unanimous win over Max Holloway.

The Australian’s slick movement and counter-punching was the difference over five rounds as he beat his American counterpart for a third time, bringing their epic rivalry to a conclusion.

$600m trapped funds threaten economy, aviation industry

0

Barring a quick intervention from the Federal Government, air travellers, and the industry could be jolted in the days ahead as the unrepatriated funds for foreign airlines accruing from sales of flight tickets in local currencies hit the $600m mark at the end of June.

This worrisome development has already elicited serious concerns from captains of the aviation industry, business analysts, as well as travel agencies, who have called for swift action.

Foreign airlines have equally warned of dire consequences should the stuck funds not be freed sooner than later.

The experts urged the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to wake up to its responsibilities and place the foreign airlines on the cash-call priority list, as a critical service provider to the Nigerian economy.

Findings by correspondents showed that the stuck fund was in excess of $800 million in November 2021. It was brought down to about $283 million as at March this year, further increased to $450 million in May, and according to estimates, has now reached about $600 million as at June ending.

Exploring Aogashima Island Japan, Considered As Active Class-C Volcano, With Last Eruption In 1780’s

0

Aogashima Island is a volcanic island which is located south from the main Japanese Islands in the Philippine Sea, and it is administered by Tokyo, the capital city of Japan.

As it is part of the Izu Archipelago, it is the southernmost island of the whole archipelago and also the most isolated inhabited island.

The whole area of the island is 8.75 square kilometers (3.38 square miles) with a coastline of about 9 kilometers (5.6 miles) long.

The highest elevation point the island has is at about 423 meters (1,388 feet) above sea level.

As seen from the air, one can notice right away that the island itself is a giant volcanic crater, where within that one there is a smaller crater.

Considered still as an active Class-C volcano, with its last eruption in the 1780’s, there are no signs yet that it will erupt in the near future.

Aogashima Island as it resembles a tropical scene from the set of Jurassic Park or the series Lost, is accessible only by boat or helicopter, whereas arriving with boat could be tricky if the sea gets rough or a tropical storm makes its way in.

Also, the island is surrounded by very steep rugged cliffs of layered volcanic deposits which makes it difficult to climb from whichever side one can choose.

Nonetheless, when arriving with boat, at the seaport of the island there is one long road which leads to the settlement which is located on the other side of the seaport.

There is also a geothermal sauna in the center of the volcano, and not to be limited just to that, one can easily walk the whole island and enjoy as much as possible since this kind of beauty is rarely seen around the world.
