Group Recommends Solutions To Brain Drain In Health Sector

0

The Nigeria Solidarity Fund (NSSF) has proffered solutions and recommendations to stem the rising brain drain in the nation’s healthcare system.

This is contained in a communique issued by Dr Fejiro Chinye-Nwoko, the General Manager/ Chief Executive Officer, NSSF,  in Lagos at the end of its talk shop on brain drain in the health sector.

The discussion was entitled: “Nigerian Healthcare System and Brain Drain — Step up or Sink”.

NSSF said that the discussion was organised as an advocacy strategy with the aim of highlighting current challenges in human capital flight in the Nigerian health sector, and proffering solutions to same.

The discussion was also a rallying call for individuals and organisations to partner with the NSSF on strengthening the healthcare system in Nigeria.

The communique highlighted the following challenge’s in Nigeria’s healthcare system; poor working conditions stemming from epileptic power supply, dilapidated hospitals, inter-professional rivalry, security challenges exposing doctors to kidnapping and harassment from patients’ relatives.

Others included non-existent training opportunities, delays in payments of salaries lasting as long as 23 months in states such as Abia and Imo; and poor follow through of government policies.

The communique argued that it was difficult to train a doctor today to replace the experience and knowledge of consultants who were leaving the country.

According to the communique, the enumerated factors above are in stack contrast to conditions in the West, where salaries and emoluments are paid in a timely fashion; equipment are available and modern; and general conditions are conducive.

The communique noted that NSSF seeks to address this by identifying and funding high impact solutions in line with government strategies.

The communique further noted that if the recommendations were implemented, brain drain in the nation’s healthcare sector would be a thing of the past.

It said that government should commit to implementing agreed policies such as hazard allowance which took eight months to negotiate and is yet to be implemented.

According to the communique, government should convene roundtable discussions with relevant stakeholders to discuss workable solutions.

“Government should identify data gaps and research agenda and use the information gathered to understand and address brain drain as well as the risks of the health care system completely breaking down.

‘Government should work toward increasing patriotism by meeting the basic needs of the average citizen and creating an enabling environment,” it added.

The communique also called for regular disbursement of Basic Healthcare Provision Fund.

New LGAs Declared Open Defecation-free

Five new local government areas have been added to the list of Open Defecation-free (ODF) LGAs in the country.
This brings to 83 the number of LGAs in the country now free from having its populace defecating in the open.

They are; Garki, Kaugama, Miga and Yankwashi in Jigawa, and Aguata LGA in Anambra State.
At the monthly meeting of the National Task Group on Sanitation in Abuja, the members unanimously agreed to declare the five LGAs Open defecation-free, after meeting the criteria in the ODF Protocol.

LN247 gathered that before attaining the ODF status, communities would have eliminated open defecation and imbibed total sanitation practices, which include personal, environmental and domestic hygiene.

The communities would have also had 100 per cent toilet use and increased ownership and sustainability of hygiene and sanitation services.
Chairman of the NTGS, Mr Emmanuel Awe, said the validation exercise was part of the process to monitor and encourage communities on behavioural change in hygiene promotion.

According to him, states must show more commitment in ensuring that more LGAs are open defecation-free and in a sustainable manner.
Giving an overview of the process for the Jigawa LGAs, to be declared open defecation-free, Mr Peters Ojonuba, the Validation Team Lead, said it was impressive to see the commitment of the state in improving access to sanitation.

Ojonuba said no faeces were sighted in the 414 communities, being 20 per cent of the 2,070 communities in the four LGAs.
He said most communities depended on open wells as water source, and drop hole covers were used for latrines, adding that this was supported by the state government through subsidy.

He also commended the commitment of the political class and traditional rulers who sanctioned defaulters of the rule of public defecation.

Mr Chibuike Nwanyanwu, who spoke on Aguata LGA’s efforts towards becoming open defecation-free, said behavioural change evidences were seen in communities building and using their toilets.

Nwanyanwu said communities in the LGA had moved up the sanitation ladder through the use of improved toilets, and called for sustainability of the efforts through constant monitoring.

Sydney Floods: Tens Of Thousands Told To Evacuate

0

Tens of thousands residents have been told to evacuate their homes in Sydney, following torrential rain and flash flooding in Australia’s largest city.

Roads have been cut off, with 18 evacuation orders in western Sydney alone and warnings of more to come.

“This is a life-threatening emergency situation,” Stephanie Cooke, emergency services minister for the state of New South Wales, said.

The area was hit by flash flooding in March, killing 20 people.

“We are now facing dangers on multiple fronts – flash flooding, riverine flooding and coastal erosion,” Cooke told a media briefing.

Her warning came as the Bureau of Meteorology said up to 350mm of rain had hit certain areas, risking flooding along the Nepean River.

Sydney’s main dam had also started to spill overnight – a further concern for the authorities.

Cooke said this was a “rapidly evolving situation” and warned that people should be “prepared to evacuate at short notice”.

There had been 83 flood rescues by emergency services in the past 24 hours alone, she said.

“It unfortunately shows that people aren’t necessarily heeding the advice that we continue to put out multiple times a day in relation to this flooding event,” Cooke said.

“I’m respectfully asking people to avoid non-essential travel at this time.”

Israel Shoots Down Hezbollah Drones Heading For Gas Rig

2

Authorities in Israel say they have shot down three Hezbollah drones heading towards one of its gas rigs in a disputed area of the Mediterranean.

Military officials say the drones were launched from Lebanon and were shot down by a combination of fighter jets and ship-mounted missiles.

Hezbollah confirmed it had launched the drones in a short statement.

Tensions have mounted between Israel and Lebanon over ownership of the Karish gas field.

US energy envoy Amos Hochstein is mediating between the two countries to settle the longstanding dispute. Israel says the field lies within its UN-recognised exclusive economic zone, but Lebanon has also laid claim to parts of it.

Hezbollah said it had targeted the rig as part of a reconnaissance flight.

“The mission was accomplished and the message was received,” the statement said.

Last week, the group’s leader, Hassan Nasrallah, threatened to use force to prevent Israel from operating the rig.

Israeli Defence Minister Benny Gantz said the Islamist group was “preventing the state of Lebanon from reaching an agreement regarding maritime borders, which are critical to the economy and prosperity of the Lebanese nation”.

Hezbollah’s reported attack comes amid political instability in Israel. On Thursday lawmakers voted to dissolve parliament and call the fifth election in four years.

The vote, which comes after the collapse of former Prime Minster Naftali Bennett’s multi-party coalition, offers Benjamin Netanyahu, the right-wing opposition leader, a chance to return to power.

Obasanjo Rides Tricycle, Picks Passengers In Abeokuta

0

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Saturday surprised residents of Abeokuta, the Ogun State Capital as he rode a tricycle across some major parts of the town, taking some passengers along for the ride.

Chief Obasanjo took off from the Moshood Abiola Way, a stone’s throw to the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) mega station.

Dressed in white native attire and wearing a fez cap, the former President was also spotted picking up passengers randomly from the take-off point towards the end of the popular Kuto Market in the town, a development that attracted a number of residents who were excited to see him on the move. Many passengers were eager to ride with him.

The move was part of activities to mark his 85th anniversary. He turned 85 in March but has continued to engage in activities to celebrate the milestone.

He donated 85 tricycles to young people across the 36 states of the country and the Federal Capital Territory last month, as part of the activities.

At the event tagged “OBJ @85”, free tricycles were presented through the Youth Development Centre of the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library.

He challenged Nigerian youths not to abandon the country to those who are currently messing it up, adding that despite the many challenges confronting Nigeria, there are opportunities for them to take advantage of.

The ex-President urged young Nigerians to roll up their sleeves and make needed contributions towards addressing the challenges of the nation, admitting that though there are challenges they should not leave things to those who are messing it up.

“The first thing we want to prove is that there are opportunities galore in this country,” he said. “Yes, things are not what they should be, but you, as youths, individually and collectively, must make up your mind, make contributions in order to make things the way they should be.”

“If you leave things to those who are messing it up for you and who are saying you are the leaders of tomorrow, you will never have that tomorrow. Today is your day. Then the third point is; that yes, sometime you may get people who would help you, and times you may not even get who would help you.

“You must remember God has given you innate ability to be what He wants you to be and if you make up your mind on what you want to be, God will help you and He would provide those people who would help you to reach the sky which should be your limit.”
