WAFU B U17: Ugbade pumps up Eaglets’ spirit ahead final against Etalons

PHOTO: Emmanuel Michael with his MOTM award against Cote d’Ivoire in semi final

Head Coach Nduka Ugbade has told his Nigeria U17 boys they still have grounds to conquer despite securing a ticket to the Africa U17 Cup of Nations taking place in Algeria next year.

“We are going into the Final match, and we are up against Burkina Faso, a team that has won all its four matches in this competition. We have also won our three matches here but we must win the fourth and final one to clinch the trophy. Let us not allow Burkina Faso to play five matches and win all five matches. We must work assiduously to win all our four matches here to be the only undefeated team of the tournament,” Ugbade told the Golden Eaglets at a training session in Cape Coast on Wednesday.

Ugbade and the Eaglets have drawn rave reviews so far at the WAFU B U17 Championship, after scoring 10 goals in their three matches, while conceding only four, as left back Emmanuel Michael picked up the Man-of-the-Match award in each of the three games.

While Nigeria did the business in a three-team Group A that also included hosts Ghana and Togo, Burkina Faso were in the four-team Group that included Niger Republic, Cote d’Ivoire and Benin Republic. The Young Etalons dominated them all, and then pipped three-time world champions Ghana 1-0 in the second semi final on Tuesday to set up a potentially explosive Final with the Golden Eaglets.

Deadball revelation Emmanuel Michael will be the cynosure of eyes at the Cape Coast Stadium on Friday evening, having scored thrice from free-kicks for Nigeria in this tournament. The match begins at 6.30pm Ghana time (7.30pm Nigeria time).

Nigeria and Burkina Faso are already qualified to the Africa U17 Championship which Algeria will host next year, and from which Africa’s flagbearers to next year’s FIFA U17 World Cup in Peru will emerge.

Victory on Friday evening will mean Nigeria have swept the stakes in youth football in the seven-nation WAFU B within one month, with the U20 Boys (Flying Eagles) having won the WAFU B U20 Championship in Niger Republic just last month.

INEC Denies Extending Voter Registration, Insists On June 30 Deadline

0

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has denied extending the deadline of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), describing the report that it has agreed to extend the deadline by 60 days as false.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, Aishatu Jibril Dukku, had while briefing lawmakers told members during a plenary session yesterday that the Commission had agreed to extend the CVR by 60 days. “The Committee held a meeting with INEC Tuesday and they agreed to extend the CVR, all our resolutions were approved,” she said.

But responding, Chief Press Secretary to the INEC chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, clarified that the Commission has not announced an extension of the CVR deadline.

The exercise, which was meant to end on June 30, has been greeted by calls for an extension. Also, a Federal High Court sitting in Abuja had stopped INEC from ending the exercise until all eligible voters had been registered.

Meanwhile, the House of Representatives has faulted media reports associating it with the extension of the ongoing CVR. The House spokesperson, Benjamin Kalu, said it was untrue that the shift of the INEC voter registration was announced on the floor of the House yesterday.

Flanked by the chairman, of the House Committee on INEC, Hajia Aisha Dukku, he said the decision on the shift is left to Prof Mahmoud Yakubu-led INEC to take.

Kalu acknowledged that INEC may not be able to adhere to the recently adopted motion of the House, which demanded an extension of the exercise by two additional months in view of the extant provision of the electoral amendment Act and the 1999 Constitution as amended.

He reiterated the resolve of the House to ensure that eligible voters are not disenfranchised in the 2023 poll.

Dukku expressed optimism that INEC would heed the call for an extension.

Two Nigerians have been arrested by UK police for conspiring to traffic a child to Nigeria for the purpose of ‘harvesting’ the organs.

Metropolitan police in a statement said that Beatrice Nwanneka Ekweremadu and Ike Ekweremadu, who are 55 and 60 years old respectively have been remanded in custody and will appear at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court.

The police confirmed that the man and a woman have been charged with conspiring to arrange to bring a child to the UK to harvest organs in their home country, Nigeria.

They are both charged with conspiracy to arrange or facilitate the travel of another person with a view to exploitation, namely organ harvesting.

Police, however, said the child has been safeguarded but did not disclose the gender or the age of the child or the location of the arrests.

The report suggests that it is likely the suspects were arrested at Heathrow Airport since they are appearing in a court in Uxbridge.

A police investigation was launched after detectives were alerted to potential offences under modern slavery legislation in May 2022, the force said.

In September 2021, UK police appealed for information twenty years after the severed body of a Nigerian boy was found.

The young boy is believed to have been killed as a human sacrifice was found in the River Thames, London.

The boy’s headless and limbless body was found in the London part of the river clad in orange shorts on September 21, 2001. The police believed the boy came from Nigeria.

On Tuesday, London’s Metropolitan Police asked those who may have knowledge of the case to be “bold”, suggesting they may no longer be bound by former allegiances.

“It is incredibly sad and frustrating that Adam’s murder remains unsolved,” said Detective Chief Inspector Kate Kieran.

“This young boy has not and will not be forgotten. He deserved better and we will not give up on him.”

Exploring Haitian National Pantheon Museum

0

The Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien, also known as the Haitian National Pantheon Museum, is an important historic museum which is located in the capital city of the Republic of Haiti, Port-au-Prince.

This mostly subterranean museum is located below interesting gardens, showcasing a permanent exhibition about the heroes of the independence of Haiti and the Haitian history and culture.

Opened in 1983, its principal function was set to be the institution in the country which will conserve, protect and enhance the historical and cultural heritage of the Haitians, in order to boost their pride and also to bring its visitors as much close as possible to the local people.

The architecture that follows the structure is according to the design of Haiti’s original Taíno inhabitants, which can be quite visible also inside.

Within the museum, there is a conical central light well that illuminates a gold monument which recreates the cannons and banners seen on the Coat of Arms and national flag.

There are also the bodies of Haiti’s founding fathers that are laid to rest here, together with their significant heroes who had to do something for this small nation to be independent.

During the 2010 Earthquake that devastated the nation, fortunately did not cause great damage to the premises of the Pantheon due to its semi-buried structure which in some way protected it from being destroyed.

All in all, offering a unique experience which can not be seen in other places around the Caribbean region, the Musée du Panthéon National Haïtien is definitely worth the visit, where the visitors would certainly learn a lot more history about Haiti.
