The state health educator, Kaduna state Ministry of Health, Maryam Kure, urged journalists to give the necessary coverage for the realization of the zero malaria campaign in Kaduna.

NUT Requests Immediate Reversal of Kaduna’s Action On Members

0

The National leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, has rejected Governor Nasir el-Rufai’s sacking of its 2,357 of its members in Kaduna State, demanding an immediate reversal of the action.

The union alleged that the whole concept of competency test which the Kaduna State Government relied on to sack 2,357 teachers in the state last week was “designed to achieve its inglorious aim of casualization of the teaching profession in Kaduna State.”

The National Executive Council, NEC,of the union, at a news conference in Abuja on Wednesday, threatened to declare strike across the country in solidarity with teachers in Kaduna if the state government fail to act according to the demand.

Recall that the Kaduna State Government, last weekend announced the sack of 2,357 including the National President of NUT, Audu Titus Amba, allegedly for failing competency and failing to appear for the test.

NUT Deputy President, Kelvin Nwankwo, who led members of the union’s National Executive Council, to the media conference, declared the action of El-Rufai as null and void.

The union declared that its president, did not fail competency test as alleged by the Kaduna State Government, Insisting that the Kaduna State Government’s action must be reversed, he threatened that in event of failure, strike would become an option to press home the union’s demand.

The union alleged that Governor El-Rufai action was aimed at intimidating the NUT President and embarrasses the teachers in Nigeria, even as it said the action was a strategy by the governor not to pay or owe workers their salaries.

It tasked the governor to rather embark on continuous teacher training programme, which it noted, would at the end of the day, “improve knowledge and service delivery by teachers in public schools in Kaduna State as obtains in other professions such as Nursing, Medicine and Law.”

Açcording to the NUT Deputy President, “Kaduna State is the second most indebted state in Nigeria and the state government is on a free roller coaster move to satisfy the conditionality handed down to it by its creditors, which normally includes downsizing of the public service without even the remotest regards to our peculiar circumstances.”

A prepared text read to newsmen by the NUT Deputy President, read in part:”The whole concept of competency test was designed by the Kaduna State Government to achieve its inglorious aim of casualization of the teaching profession in Kaduna State.

The NUT claimed that “the manifest intention of the Kaduna State Government is to prey on the rather unfortunate existing non employment status of our teeming school leavers by recruiting them as teachers only to subsequently subject them to the raw deal it subjected the purported 20,000 teachers, thereby achieving its aim of casualization of the teaching profession in Kaduna State. “

The union also said the case of its dear President, Amba, clearly establishes the fact that the whole concept of competency test in Kaduna State is arbitrary and lacking in certainty.

Enugu State Medical Diagnostic Centre To Receive Upgrade

0

Enugu State Government says it has reached a collaborative agreement with the Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) for the upgrade of the State Medical Diagnostic Centre, Enugu for the treatment of cancer.

This is contained in a statement by the Commissioner for Health, Dr Emmanuel Obi, made available to newsmen in Enugu.

According to him, the agreement is based on a comprehensive Diagnostic and Oncology (Cancer) treatment Centre.

Obi disclosed that the State Executive Council (SEC), sequel to the agreement, approved the evacuation of the existing equipment in the centre, as requested by NSIA to enable it to take over the health facility.

He added that the SEC also approved that the evacuated equipment would be put to good use at ESUT Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu and other hospitals in the state.

The Health Commissioner also said that government “sees a greater opportunity for more efficient services to its citizens and beyond, through this collaboration”.

Commission disbursed N533.7bn to 36 States, FCT – UBEC

0

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) said it disbursed N533.7billion to the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory between 2005 and 2021 for basic education.

This is contained in a statement by UBEC Head of Public Relations, David Apeh, on Tuesday in Abuja.

Reacting to insinuations that N110 billion accessed by states as intervention funds has not been utilised, the commission said N30.8bn was not accessed as of June 6, 2022.

The commission noted that only 17 states had accessed up to the fourth quarter of 2021.

According to the commission, the states are Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Kebbi, Katsina, Nasarawa, Osun, Taraba and Zamfara.

While all states and the FCT have accessed 2005 to 2017 matching grant, the commission said Anambra, Imo, and Ogun had not accessed any quarter in 2019 matching grant.

UBEC also noted that the information, which appeared on a national daily of June 12, was a misrepresentation of comments made by the Executive Secretary, Hamid Bobboyi during a briefing on the 2022 National Personnel Audit (NPA).

The commission said the executive secretary has put measures in place to drastically reduce the level of un-accessed funds through stakeholders’ engagement and ensuring transparent management of the funds.

It added that the 50 per cent counterpart fund, which is one of the requirements for accessing the matching grant, is a law as contained in the UBEC Establishment Act

Medical Guild Seeks Inclusion in NHIA Implementation

0

The Guild of Medical Directors (GMD), has urged the Federal Government to appoint its members into committees that would formulate or upgrade the operational guidelines and tariff of the NHIA.

The guild made the appeal in a communiqué it issued at the end of its inaugural Business and Leadership Summit on Wednesday in Abuja.

It said that at the summit, it pointed out that for the National Health Insurance Act (NHIA) to be successful, key providers of health care need to be effectively involved with the operational guidelines of such health insurance.

The communiqué also said that the Federal Government should strongly review the issue of actively leasing out some of its facilities to be managed by the private sector under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

According to the communiqué, rather than continuous engagement in medical tourism by Nigerians, the Federal Government should publicly advocate the use of Nigerian private hospitals with the innovative services that they go abroad to access.

The guild also advocated an urgent set up of the working committee for the continuous and permanent communication between the Federal Ministry of Health and the private sector with the representatives of GMD as key members.

In an interview with the reporters, the National President, Dr Raymond Kuti, said that PPP was the way to go in delivering healthcare services to Nigerians.

“The way we want PPP to run is for the government to give backing to the policies that will allow and approve that those doctors in medical practices in private sector can partner and integrate with government hospitals.

“Lagos state is already doing that and there are hospitals in Lagos in which the sub services are being ceded to doctors in the private sector.

“And they run them for it, the agreement is there and I think this is what we can replicate all over the country,’’ he said.

According to Kuti, 70 per cent of doctors work in the private sector, so their skills should be used in government hospitals as well, which is the PPP segment the group is interested in.

He also said that the guild which was being repositioned to remain a strong partner in the Nigerian health care sector, was wholly complimentary to the public health sector and comparatively better equipped to deliver quality health care.

He said that the goal of the guild was to inaugurate and sustain constructive dialogue with policy makers in the legislative arm of government.

According to him, this is with a view to achieving win-win solutions to the numerous challenges in the Nigerian healthcare sector.

Organisation States Commitment To Build Stronger Health Systems in Africa

0

eHealth Africa (eHA), a Non-Governmental Organisation  (NGO), says it is committed towards building stronger health systems in Africa, especially in Nigeria in the area of Information Communication Technology (ICT).

The Executive Director, eHealth Africa, Ms Juliet Odogwu, said this in an interview with Newsmen in Abuja.

Odogwu said that the organisation had been able to train over 200 males and females on technology and software-related skills at different stages of its programmes.

“As an organisation, eHA has more women at its senior management level and it’s working to see a balance in the ratio of women to men at all levels of its workforce.

“To achieve this, the leadership of the organisation designed some early career programmes to help young female graduates start and build their careers.

“We noticed that in the technology sector specifically, we have very few females, who are willing to develop the skills or even get jobs in technology sector because it is seen as a male dominated field.

“We have equally realised that obviously women are entering into the workforce in different capacities and technology should not be any different.

“We want to build that culture in Nigeria and even in the northern Nigeria to be specific to encourage women to see these as vibrant opportunities for them on the long run.

“We want to build the immediate capacity in the environment so we need to be able to see in the next one to two years the number of women in the technology sector increase by at least 30 per cent in the communities where we work,’’ she said.

According to her, one of such initiatives is an all-women cohort of the eHA Academy geared towards helping young women start their careers in software and web development.

She said there was also an all-female paid ”internship cohort” that exposes graduates to the organisation’s values, mission and better prepare them for full-time employment opportunities.

“We will continue our efforts to make eHealth Africa the best place to work and our mission is to build stronger health systems in Africa”.

She further said that the organisation was recently certified as one of the best places to work in Nigeria for 2022 by an international organisation called “Best Places to Work’’.

Odogwu said that the recognition gave the management the drive and motivation to keep raising the bar.

Throwback Thursday: How QWERTY Keyboard Was Born

0

June 23, 1868 — American newspaper editor Christopher Latham Sholes was granted a patent on this day for a typewriter.

There are claims by others to have invented the machine, but Sholes is widely believed to have produced the first commercially successful model.

It was hardly an original idea. Back in 1714 it was announced on behalf of Queen Anne of Great Britain that Henry Mill, an engineer, born in 1683, had been granted a patent by the Queen for a writing machine.

The patent notice read:

“Our Trusty and welbeloved Henry Mill, gent., hath by his petiçon humbly represented unto Us that he hath by his great study and paines & expence invented and brought to perfection an artificial machine or method for impressing or transcribing of letters, one after another, as in writing, whereby all writing whatsoever may be engrossed in paper or parchment so neat and exact as not to be distinguished from print; that the said machine or method may be of great use in settlements and publick records, the impression being deeper and more lasting than any other writing, and not to be erased or counterfeited without manifest discovery.”

Nobody knows what the apparatus looked like or how it worked and there have been patents registered by others for machines that could pass as a typewriter. But credit for the first modern version goes to Christopher Sholes, who lived in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

The problem with his first machine was that the keyboard was arranged alphabetically, just as anyone would expect. But as operators learned to type at speed it was discovered that the metal arms bearing each character often became entangled.

Sholes studied the problem with his partner Amos Densmore and worked out which letters were most often used.

They then put them as far apart as possible on a new keyboard, reducing the chance of clashing arms because they would come from opposite directions. And thus the “Qwerty” keyboard, still is use today, was born.

Sholes was as pleased as punch with his “Qwerty” typewriter and described it as “a blessing to mankind.” Even so, he sought expert advice and opinion and in early 1873 approached engineers at the Remington company which, apart from firearms, made sewing machines and farm tools.

Remington were highly impressed and offered to buy the patent from the partners.

Sholes agreed and accepted $12,000 for his half-share. The more canny Densmore, however, would not sell unless the company agreed to pay him royalties. It has been estimated that these were eventually worth $1.5 million to the astute partner.

Thanks to Sholes and Densmore, Remington began producing typewriters just a few months later.

One of their early customers was Samuel Clemens, better known as Mark Twain.

The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, one of Twain’s most successful works, published in 1876, is widely believed to be the first novel written on a typewriter.
