Vaccination Of Livestock Begins In Abuja

0

The Nigerian Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has flagged off the vaccination and treatment of livestock across the Six Area Councils of the territory.

Flagging off exercise at Nyanya veterinary clinic in Abuja, the Mandate Secretary, Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat of the FCTA, Mallam Abubakar Ibrahim said the initiative would help to curb the outbreak and spread of the disease.

The secretary explained that the exercise was also necessary because of the growing importance of the livestock sector across the country.

He said that livestock is not just a source of food only but an economic value to farmers and the larger society.

According to him, “Our target is to specifically prevent the outbreak and spread of diseases such as the highly contagious Bovine pleuropneumonia in cattle, Rabies in dogs as well as the pest des petit.

“These diseases have high mortality rate on livestock as well as posing a significant threat to public health safety of the residents”

Ibrahim urged members of the public who own livestock to cooperate with the animal health officials whom he said are for free.

He revealed that ninety health officials of the secretariat have been deployed for the vaccination which would last for two weeks in the first phase.

Earlier, the Director of veterinary services at FCT Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat (ARDS), Dr  Regina Adaulugba said, “We have been given a mandate by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture to ensure that the diseases are eradicated, they cause a lot of mortality and damages in the livestock sector.

“So, the flag off is in fulfilment of the mandate at the FCT-ARDS level, we expect that if a cattle is pregnant and is vaccinated it won’t come down with the disease, farmers usually experience losses”

Outdoor Events Banned In Parts Of France Due To Heatwave

0

Outdoor public events have been banned in an area of France as a record-breaking heatwave sweeps across Europe.

Concerts and large public gatherings have been called off in the Gironde department around Bordeaux.

On Thursday, parts of France hit 40C earlier in the year than ever before, with temperatures expected to peak on Saturday.

Scientists say periods of intense heat are becoming more frequent and longer lasting as a result of global warming.

Spain, Italy and the UK are also experiencing high temperatures.

In Gironde, officials said public events, including some of the official 18 June Resistance celebrations, will be prohibited from Friday at 14:00 (12:00 GMT) “until the end of the heat wave”. Indoor events at venues without air-conditioning are also banned.

Europe Fades Under Early Heat Wave From Mediterranean To North Sea

0

A blanket of hot air stretching from the Mediterranean to the North Sea is bringing much of Western Europe its first heat wave of the summer, with temperatures forecast Friday to top 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) from London to Paris.

Experts said the unusually early heat wave was a sign of what’s to come as global warming continues, moving up in the calendar the extreme temperatures that Europe would previously have seen only in July and August.

“In some parts of Spain and France, temperatures are more than 10 degrees higher — that’s huge — than the average for this time of year,” Clare Nullis, a spokesperson for the World Meteorological Organization in Geneva, said.

In France, some 18 million people woke to heat wave alerts affecting about a third of the country Friday. Forest fire warnings were issued from the Pyrenees in the south to the Paris region.

Tourists dunked their feet in fountains near the Eiffel Tower or sought relief in the Mediterranean. A restaurant server rested under a lonely tree as the heat baked the port city of Marseille in southern France.

France has introduced numerous measures to cope with extreme summer temperatures following a deadly heat wave in 2003 that killed about 15,000 people.

On Friday, schoolchildren were allowed to stay home in the 12 French regions in the southwest and west that were under the highest alert.

The government stepped up efforts to ensure nursing home residents and other vulnerable populations could stay hydrated.

Temperatures in France have mounted all week and were expected to hit over 40 C (104 F) in the country’s southwest on Friday, and in the Paris region on Saturday.

Nighttime temperatures are also unusually high, and the heat is stretching to normally cooler regions in Brittany and Normandy on the Atlantic Coast.

Matthieu Sorel, a climatologist at national weather service Meteo France, told public broadcaster France-Info that temperatures are expected to break several records.

He called the exceptionally early long stretch of hot weather a “marker of climate change.”

Britain’s Met Office said global warming has increased the average temperature of U.K. summers – and the likelihood of more extreme temperatures during hot spells and heat waves.

“Reaching 34 C during June is a rare, but not unprecedented, event in the historical climate records for the U.K.,” said Mark McCarthy, head of the Met Office’s National Climate Information Center. “But if it should happen this week, it would be notable that it would have occurred on three days during the last six Junes.”

Before 2017, the last three times the U.K. recorded June temperatures of 34 degrees Celsius (93.2 F) or higher were in 1947, 1957 and 1976.

Germany’s national weather service DWD predicted that the big sweat would continue over the weekend, as the heat moves eastward into central and Eastern Europe.

The hot weather follows an unusually dry spring in Western Europe, with authorities ordering water to be rationed in northern Italy and parts of France.

Experts say that climate change is already affecting rainfall patterns and evaporation rates across the region, with knock-on effects for agriculture, industry and wildlife.

“Heat waves are starting earlier,” said Nullis, the U.N. weather agency spokesperson. “They’re becoming more frequent and more severe because of concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, which are at record level. What we’re witnessing today is, unfortunately, a foretaste of the future.”

She noted that extreme temperatures hit other parts of the globe in recent weeks.

Nearly a third of Americans were under some form of heat advisory this week.

During months of scorching temperatures, India and Pakistan saw the mercury scrape past 50 C (122 F) in some places.

The current heat wave in Europe started almost a week ago in Spain, where temperatures reached up to 43 C (109.4F). Spanish authorities hope the weather will begin to cool again Sunday.

The intense temperatures and a lack of rain has helped fuel wildfires across Spain, taxing firefighting capacity.

Politicians and experts met Friday in Madrid to discuss ways to tackle drought and the increasing spread of deserts across the globe.

Bangladesh has deployed troops to help two million people stranded by floods after relentless monsoon rains inundated huge swathes of territory for the second time in weeks, officials said Friday.

Floods are a regular menace to millions of people in low-lying Bangladesh, but experts say climate change is increasing their frequency, ferocity and unpredictability.

Much of the country’s northeast is underwater and the situation could worsen over the weekend with more heavy rains forecast.

Authorities suspended imminent high school graduation tests across the country, with hundreds of classrooms now being used as makeshift shelters for those whose homes have been submerged.

“The situation is very alarming. More than two million people are now marooned by flood water,” Sylhet region chief administrator Mohammad Mosharraf Hossain said.

“People have taken shelter on their boats. We have deployed the army and we are trying to evacuate them.”

Hossain said authorities had sent the military to flood-hit rural towns, with soldiers going door to door handing out aid and rescuing people from rising tides.

Heavy rains that began last week in Bangladesh and parts of neighbouring India fed into rivers that burst their banks downstream, said Arifuzzaman Bhuiyan of the government’s Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre.

He added that the Surma river, Sylhet region’s largest waterway, was more than a metre (three feet) higher than normal.

“This is one of the worst floods in the region’s history. The situation will worsen in the next three days,” he said.

The worst flooding in nearly two decades hit Sylhet late last month, with at least 10 people killed and four million others affected.

Lahore Airport: Flight Operation Suspended Amid Dusty Winds

0

Flight operation was suspended at Lahore Airport due to howling gales and dust-laden winds in the city, on Friday.

It is learnt that the Lahore-bound Airblue flight PA413 from Sharjah was diverted to Multan Airport, for the air traffic controller did not allow the pilot to land the plane due to dusty winds.

After being disallowed to land in Lahore, the pilot diverted the direction of the plane to Multan Airport where he landed it.

It is to be noted here that the dusty winds, followed by heavy rainfall, brought a sight of relief for the people reeling under shocks from the scorching sun.

At the same time, it also brought bad news for the people whose loved ones fell prey to accidents caused by gale-force winds and heavy rainfall in the city.

Fuel Scarcity: FG Raises Freight Rate For Marketers

0

The federal government announced Thursday it has approved the upward review in freight rate for transporters to help alleviate the challenges associated with distribution of petroleum products nationwide.

The revised freight rate takes effect from June 1 while the pump price of petrol remains at N165 per litre, a statement by the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), said Thursday.

The statement said the approval was granted after due consultations with industry-wide parties.

It said the review was necessitated by the upswing in the global price of petroleum products especially diesel, and its implication on the cost of transporting petrol nationwide.

The development came after the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) asked for an increase in the freight rate for petrol due to the high cost of diesel in the country.

In May, the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN) claimed that the government owed its members half a trillion naira.

However, the NMDPRA told newsmen it had paid oil marketers bridging claims of about N59 billion to marketers in five months.

In recent months, fuel scarcity has worsened in Abuja and several other cities across the country.

The statement by the NMDPRA reads: “His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, has considered and approved the upward review in freight rate for transporters to alleviate the challenges associated with the distribution of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) nationwide.

“The approval was after due consultations with industry-wide stakeholders at the instance of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (the Authority). The review was necessitated by the upswing in the global price of petroleum products especially Automotive Gasoil (Diesel) and its implication on the cost of transporting Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) nationwide.

“Consequently, the Authority wishes to advise as follows that in line with the mandate of the Authority as prescribed in the PIA (Section 31(i)) to develop and enforce a framework on tariffing and pricing for natural gas and petroleum products, the transporters freight rate has been reviewed to reflect current market realities.

“The revised freight rate takes effect from 1st June 2022 while still maintaining the current regulated PMS pump price of N165.00/Litre.

“An Inter-agency Team is being constituted to ensure reconciliation and payment of outstanding transporters claims in line with established payment procedure under the Bridging Fund Scheme.”

“We believe the increase in transporters freight rate will further encourage Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) and other stakeholders to deploy more trucks to transport PMS nationwide to ensure adequate supply of the product.”

Organisation Hands Over Centre To Adamawa Government

0

The International Organization for Migration (IOM), has handed over a Multi-Purpose Community Centre to the Adamawa State Government, in North Eastern Nigeria.

The two million US Dollar project built by IOM and constructed with funding from the Republic of Korea, is aimed at preventing gender based violence (GBV) and improving the well being of the affected population.

The project is also aimed at dealing with the root causes of GBV, while enhancing the capacity and skills of community members including women and girls.

The IOM’s Chief of Mission in Nigeria, Prestage Murima, said that, “The Multi-Purpose Community Centre provides a safe space for activities such as lay counseling, basic emotional support, skills development and other activities targeting especially children and teenagers to promote positive coping mechanisms, resilience and facilitate healing and recovery of affected communities.

Murima added that, in order to support the handover process of the Multi-Purpose Community centre to the national authorities, a transition plan has been developed in close consultation with the community and other stakeholders, particularly the Adamawa State Government, who will be responsible for the centre.

According to the Nigeria Humanitarian Needs Overview 2022, GBV including sexual violence, is widespread in the region, in part due to the ongoing conflict, insecurity and poor living conditions in IDPs camps for informal settlements.

This has made women and girls in Adamawa State have restricted mobility due to the ongoing conflict, exacerbated by the prevailing gender norms that tend to discriminate against women and girls. Communities hosting IDPs are vulnerable in most cases and the IDPs’ needs strain scarce community resources.

Responding to the gesture, the Adamawa State Commissioner, Ministry of Reconstruction Rehabilitation and Resettlement, Elijah Tumba said, “The Multi-Purpose Community Centre was established at the right time when the State needed additional facilities to compliment the needs of affected populations.”

The Head of Programme, World Food Programme (WFP) Nigeria, Serigne Loum said, “The joint project is an excellent example of operationalising the Humanitarian Development and Peace Nexus and Delivery as One approach. It aligns perfectly with the UNSDCF objectives and contributes to address in a holistic way, the needs of affected populations.”

The crisis in Northeast Nigeria, has led to an increase in GBV, including sexual violence.

The initiative promotes women’s and girl’s psychosocial wellbeing, create social networks to reduce isolation or seclusion, enhance integration into community life, participation and generate conditions for their empowerment.

Enyimba Highest Ranked Nigerian Side As North Africans Dominate CAF Top 50 Ranking

0

Although Enyimba of Aba is struggling in this season’s Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL), the Peoples Elephant are still considered the country’s best club by the Confederation of African Football (CAF).

In its latest ranking published yesterday, Enyimba is rated as Africa’s 23rd best team, with the closest Nigerian side, Enugu Rangers, in the 44th position, followed by Lobi Stars as number 49.

The ranking is dominated by clubs from North Africa following their stupendous performances in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederation Cup.

The current ranking takes into retrospect the last five years with the index based on each side’s performance in the CAF Champions League and CAF Confederations Cup.

Egyptian giants Al Ahly, who lost the CAF Champions League final to Wydad Casablanca a fortnight ago, sit top of the list with the Moroccan giants behind them.

CAF Confederation Cup winner, RS Berkane, makes the top five alongside Tunisian outfit, Esperance.

Mamelodi Sundowns sit sixth with TP Mazembe, Zamalek, Pyramids and Star of the Sahel completing the top 10.

Meanwhile, the 2022/2023 CAF Champions League and Confederation Cup competitions will begin on August 12, the CAF has announced.

The group stages for both competitions will start in September and end before November 18 for clubs to free players, who will represent their countries at the Qatar 2022 World Cup.

The knockouts will not start until February 2023 after the African Nations Championships (CHAN) tournament is to be held in Algeria.

NPFL leaders, Rivers United and Plateau United are Nigeria’s leading candidates for the CAF Champions League.

From the onset of the 2021/22 season, the teams have been at the forefront of the race for the title, but now Rivers United, with 70 points, have opened a 10-point gap at the top of the log.

Enugu Rangers and Enyimba are battling for the lone Confederation Cup ticket available for the third-placed team in the NPFL. Both have 51 points, but the Rangers are third on the log on superior goals difference.

Remo Stars (50 points), Kwara United (49) and Sunshine Stars (48) still have a mathematical chance of overtaking Rangers and Enyimba in the race for the Confederation Cup.

The NPFL has five matches remaining until the end of the season.
