Crystal Palace, Arsenal Open EPL League Fixtures August 5

68

Champions, Manchester City, face West Ham away on the opening weekend of a 2022-23 Premier League campaign that will include a mid-season break for the World Cup in Qatar.

There will be no top-flight games after the weekend of November 12-13 until December 26 because of the World Cup.

The first fixture holds on Friday, August 5, when Crystal Palace hosts Arsenal.

Liverpool plays at promoted Fulham, with Nottingham Forest at Newcastle.

Forest is back in the Premier League for the first time since 1998-99.

The World Cup, which will feature both England and Wales, starts on 21 November. The final is on 18 December, eight days before the Premier League season resumes.

There are no meetings between the Premier League’s so-called ‘big six’ on the weekend of 12-13 November – the one before the World Cup – following a request by the Football Association.

England will meet up on 14 November before flying to Qatar the following day.

Special arrangements have been made to allow more time between games played across the three festive match rounds.

This will allow squads greater time to recover. Previously clubs were given a minimum of 48 hours between matches.

After fixtures on 26-27 December, the following match round will be played on 29, 30 and 31 December. The New Year match round will be played on the 2, 3, 4 and 5 January.

Alleged Job Fraud: Court Admits Dismissed Immigration Officer To N1.5m Bail

An FCT High Court in Kubwa on Friday admitted a dismissed Nigeria Immigration Service officer, Mohammed Abdullahi to bail in the sum N1.5 million for allegedly defrauding job seekers.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Commission (ICPC) charged Abdullahi, with four counts bordering on job scam.

In a ruling for bail, Justice Kezziah Ogbonnaya, ordered the defendant to produce two sureties.

Ogbonnaya said one of the sureties must have a landed property in Abuja and the other must have at least N1.5million in a recognised bank account.

He ordered the defendant to ensure he appears in court for his trial and adjourned the case till Oct.10 for hearing.

Earlier, the Defence Counsel, Stanley Ofoegbu told the court that the defendant informed him that his second wife had been pregnant for 10 months with no means of getting medical attention due to lack of funds.

” The defendant’s two children are presently very sick too and he was arraigned in November, 2021 and has been in custody since then,” he said.

The ICPC Prosecution Counsel, Olubunmi Olugasa, alleged that the defendant, an NIS officer, collected N775, 000 from Abdullahi Musa on Febuary 2019.

Olugasa said the defendant collected the said sum at the Immigration headquarters, Sauka Airport Road, Abuja as benefit for himself to assist Musa get employment for his sons, into the service.

She also said the defendant received N435, 000 from one Zakariah Jeremiah to assist him secure employment into the service.

The offence she said, contravened the provisions of Section 19, 8(1)(a) of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act 2000.

Julian Assange Can Be Extradited, Says UK Home Secretary

0

Wikileaks founder Julian Assange’s extradition to the US has been approved by UK Home Secretary Priti Patel.

Assange has 14 days to appeal the decision, the Home Office said.

It said the courts found that extradition would not be “incompatible with his human rights” and that while in the US “he will be treated appropriately”.

Assange is wanted by the American authorities over documents leaked in 2010 and 2011.

He has been in prison since he was removed from the Ecuadorian embassy in London in 2019 and arrested by British police, after Ecuador withdrew his asylum status.

Responding to the home secretary’s order, Wikileaks confirmed that it would appeal her decision.

Assange’s wife, Stella, said her husband had done “nothing wrong” and “he has committed no crime”.

“He is a journalist and a publisher, and he is being punished for doing his job.”

In May 2019, while serving a jail sentence in the UK for breaching bail, the US justice department filed 17 charges against Assange for violating the Espionage Act – alleging that material obtained by Wikileaks endangered lives.

Assange’s legal team claimed that classified documents published by Wikileaks, which related to the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, exposed US wrongdoing and were in the public interest.

The Supreme Court ruled in March that Assange’s case raised no legal questions over assurances the US had given to the UK over how he is likely to be treated.

Amnesty International said enabling the extradition to take place “would put him at great risk and sends a chilling message to journalists”.

“Diplomatic assurances provided by the US that Assange will not be kept in solitary confinement cannot be taken on face value given previous history”, general secretary Agnes Callamard said.

Former government minister David Davis said he does not believe Assange will have a fair trial in the US.

“This extradition treaty needs to be rewritten to give British and American citizens identical rights, unlike now”, he said.

A Home Office spokesperson said that under the Extradition Act 2003, the secretary of state “must sign” an extradition order if there are “no grounds to prohibit the order being made”.

“The UK courts have not found that it would be oppressive, unjust or an abuse of process to extradite Assange”, the Home Office added.

Over 10m Nigerians Engaged In Fisheries Operations – FG

0

The Federal Government says over 10 million Nigerians are actively engaged in primary and secondary fisheries operations in the subsector of the economy.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammad Abubakar, made this known at the close of the Internal Coordination Meeting of Implementation of Fisheries Governance Project Phase 2 (FisheriesGov 2), on Thursday in Abuja.

Abubakar said government would support them to boost local production in order to reduce imports, as it is currently encouraging backward integration through commercial aquaculture production.

” The Fisheries and Aquaculture subsector is very significant to the Nigerian economy in terms of employment creation, income generation, poverty alleviation, foreign exchange earnings and provision of raw materials for the animal feed industry.

” It is estimated that over 10 million Nigerians are actively engaged in primary and secondary Fisheries operations, thus creating wealth for our people and we will be happy if they can benefit from this project.

” Nigeria’s total demand for Fish is 3.6 Million Tons annually while we are producing 1.1 Million Tons from all sources (Artisanal, Aquaculture,  and Industrial sectors).

“Leaving a deficit of about 2.5 Million Tons that my ministry is working hard in collaboration with the private sector to supplement by way of import reduction through backward integration.

” To boost local production in order to reduce imports, Government is encouraging backward integration through commercial aquaculture production (pond and cage culture) for local consumption and export and this is yielding positive results,” he said.

The minister said that Federal Government had also put in place measures to boost the fisheries subsector.

” It is gratifying to bring to your notice measures the Federal Government has introduced to enabled the Fisheries subsector gain the desired prominence.

” These measures include: establishment of Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) in Lagos and Abuja to monitor and control Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing along Nigeria Continental Shel.

” Also Fish Storage, Processing and Marketing Project to increase shelf life/ keeping quality and curtail post harvest losses of Fish and Fishery Products.

” As well as Fish Farm Clusters to increase Fish production and engage the teeming youths and women and Lake Enhancement Project to increase Fish Production and make for sustainable livelihood for the Fisher folks.

” All these programs are tailored towards job and wealth creation, poverty reduction, arrest and prevention of youth restiveness and food nutrition security,” he said.

He said that recommendations from the workshop would be used to improve Nigeria’s governance mechanism for maximum productivity in her fisheries subsector.

Abubakar tasked stakeholders at the meeting on subjecting every item on the agenda to scrutiny and come up with sustainable and practicable governance strategies for implementation to boost fish production in Africa.

Earlier, Dr Nick Nwankpa, Acting Director, The African Union Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), said the project recognised the importance of institutional collaboration for the sustainable exploitation and management of fisheries, aquaculture and other blue economy resources.

He said the fisheries governance would also take cognisance of functions of the various African Union Commission (AUC) departments, when well-coordinated.

He said this could contribute significantly to the integrated development of the sector and the socio-economic advancement of the continent.

CAC Urges Registered Companies To File Returns To Avoid Deregistration

0

Garba Abubakar, Registrar-General of the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) has urged registered companies to always file returns to the commission to avoid deregistration.

Abubakar, who gave the advice in an interview with newsmen in Abuja on Thursday, stressed that it was not enough that people register companies, they must equally file returns as required by law.

The registrar-general explained that it was through return filing by companies that the commission was able to know which companies are active and which ones were inactive.

” You must do what the law says you must do, you have to file your returns, we have categorised companies into what we call active or inactive.

” It is not enough that people registered companies, there is the need to always file returns to achieve meaningful growth.

“Companies that have filed returns up to date are active. Those that have not filed returns up to date, we have classified them as inactive.

“This is creating lots of problems for most of them, because if you are applying for a Visa using a company account, no Embassy will give you a Visa, until you update your record with the CAC.”

He said hitherto, companies that are actually making money everyday do not bother to file returns to the commission.

” Because there is no way for a third party to know whether such a company is active or not.”

Abubakar said that CAC would prioritise filing of returns as one of the ways to also improve its internally generated revenue.

He also said that such priority would be designed to compel registered companies to comply with the policy or be deregistered.

“The law has made deregistration more cumbersome now, hitherto if you have reasonable cause to believe that your company is not carrying out business operations, you can just write to the company.

“If they respond fine, if they do not send a second letter, you can strike them off. The law now says it must be five-years. You have to wait for five years.

“We hope companies will update their records, after 18 months if you do not file your next return, then it will go back to inactive, so the revenue will continue to grow.’

The registrar-general attributed the success recorded by the commission in terms of revenue growth to the current practice of looking inwards to improve its revenue.

He identified income generation from the new registration system, increase in share capital, and administration of charges that were mortgaged to be a major source of success achieved.

Elon Musk Sued For $258bn Over Alleged Dogecoin ‘Pyramid Scheme’

0

Elon Musk and his companies have been sued for $258bn by an investor who claims he was “defrauded” by a Dogecoin “pyramid scheme.”

The investor, Keith Johnson, has named Musk, as well as his companies Tesla and SpaceX, in the lawsuit filed in federal court in Lower Manhattan on Thursday.

Plaintiff Keith Johnson who purchased Dogecoin in 2021 – is seeking a class-action lawsuit in the Southern District of New York against Musk and his companies SpaceX and Tesla, for at least $86 billion in damages.

Johnson made the demands at a federal court over claims that Musk directly “manipulated” the price of Dogecoin in a deliberate “crypto pyramid scheme” conducted over Twitter.

Johnson argues Musk drove up the price of Dogecoin with his tweets about it, but that the currency lacks “underlying value” and Musk promoted it for his own “profit, exposure, and amusement.”

Johnson is also seeking court orders to prohibit Musk from promoting Dogecoin, and to declare Dogecoin trading a form of gambling, under federal and New York law.

The United States government is committed to supporting initiatives that promote learning, provide students with the opportunity to share ideas in an engaging environment, and promote cultural preservation efforts.

On Monday, Acting U.S. Consul General James Suor and Director-General of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments, Abba Tijani, launched the U.S. Public Diplomacy Engagement Space at the National Museum Lagos and were joined by Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Aina Ayoola.

Suor hailed the opening as another innovative project of the United States government in Nigeria that will facilitate learning in an engaging environment for students.

“This modern educational space will stimulate curiosity in the minds of children, support learning, facilitate reflection and promote common ideals between the United States and Nigeria.”

“The space will also promote shared values of democracy and encourage robust people-to-people ties,” Suor said at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Suor praised Pearl Recycling, a non-profit waste recycling organization founded by Olamide Ayeni-Babajide, an alumna of the U.S. government-sponsored TechWomen programme for working with the U.S. Consulate to create the innovative space.

He explained that the U.S. government-funded programmes have been of immense benefit to the people of Nigeria, boosting intellectual and cross-cultural capital, and have also become catalysts for professional alumni networks that help address global challenges.

He noted that the recent upgrade of the Old Residency Museum Archive in Calabar with a digital conferencing facility and open space for educational events and the newly opened learning space at the National Museum in Lagos are important additions to the ongoing efforts of the U.S. government to support Nigerian museums and the preservation of Nigerian cultural heritage.

“Since the inception of the Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation program, Nigeria has received 10 grants worth $1 million with projects spread across the country, and these preservation projects benefit both future generations and the growth of the tourism industry,” Suor said.

In his remarks, Abba Tijani applauded the United States government’s commitment to empowering young people through innovative learning spaces and preserving Nigeria’s cultural heritage. “This space is a world-class space and will provide people the opportunity to engage and learn, and also visit the newly renovated permanent exhibition at the national museum where we keep the cultural artifacts for posterity.”

The Permanent Secretary, Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development, Aina Ayoola, also commended the U.S. government for its continuing partnership with Nigeria in providing opportunities for children to explore their environment as part of a holistic educational experience.

The Public Diplomacy Engagement Space is funded through the public diplomacy grant of the U.S. Consulate General Lagos and will bring more young people to the Lagos Museum to learn, research, and share ideas.

The apex Igbo Socio-cultural, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, has congratulated the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, on his emergence as the vice-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, describing him as a “detribalised patriot, purveyor of morals and a poster personality”.

While expressing optimism that his candidacy will add enormous electoral value to the PDP, Ohanaeze noted that in all of Okowa’s political career, he had served without skirmishes.

The Igbo apex body stated this on Friday in a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, titled “Ohanaeze Ndigbo congratulates Okowa as vice-presidential candidate”.

Ogbonnia said that Professor George Obiozor led Ohanaeze Ndigbo worldwide is proud of him.

The statement partly read, “the Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide heartily congratulates an Igbo prodigy; an astute administrator, sagacious politician, brilliant physician, creative visionary, prudent resource manager, detribalized patriot, purveyor of morals and a poster personality, His Excellency, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, the Governor of Delta State as he secures the highly coveted Vice Presidential candidacy of the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP).

It is only grace that explains the mystery behind the profound achievements by a few in various areas of life which paradoxically present enormous challenges to many others. Onnoghen Canvasses Adequate Funding To Save Judiciary

0

Former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Walter Onnoghen has warned that unless the Supreme Court is adequately funded, it might soon, at best, end up as a glorified high court.

He lamented that justices of the apex court had been suffering in silence since 2008 when their salaries and emoluments were last reviewed by the Federal Government.

Onnoghen, who spoke yesterday, in Abuja, at the public presentation of Nigeria’s first book on Construction Law, regretted that some justices of the apex court still live in rented apartments in unsuitable areas within the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Besides parlous residences, the ex-CJN clarified that the chambers of the judges were unbefitting of their status. He, therefore, appealed that the court be properly funded and a conducive environment provided to enable the justices to perform optimally.

The Cross River State native recalled that while in office, he headed a team, comprising the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) and the Solicitor General of the Federation, which prepared a new welfare scheme on the order of government.

He decried that since his exit, the Welfare Scheme Report, which would have enhanced the condition of service of the jurists, had been jettisoned.

Onnoghen, consequently, pleaded that funding of the judiciary should be immediately looked into with a view to improving the arm of government due to its critical role in nation-building.

He commended the author, Ewuwuni Onnoghen-Theophilus, urging that youths should be encouraged to contribute meaningfully to the development of the country.
