Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission Promises Improved Power Supply From July 1

0

Chairman, Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), Sanusi Garba says Nigerians will witness improved power supply from July 1 following renewed efforts by industry stakeholders.

Garba gave the assurance at an interactive session with newsmen after the Second Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) meeting in Lagos, Nigeria’s South-west.

The meeting was attended by top officials of NERC, Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Generation Companies as well electricity Distribution Companies.

He said NERC had facilitated a contractual agreement between the Gencos, TCN and the 11 DisCos that would guarantee the generation, transmission and distribution of an average of 5,000MW of electricity daily to customers effective July 1.

According to him, the contract is binding on all the players across the sector’s value chain and stipulates penalties for any party that defaults on the arrangement under the new regime.

Garba said: “Yes, we have had discussions with the gas suppliers within our regulatory space. We have them on board to ensure that once we made the commercial requirements, gas was going to flow.

“Now, for transmission, we have heard of figures well in excess of 5,000MW and clearly TCN will be able to deliver that.

“I recall clearly in March last year we had 5,400MW. So, it means it is quite possible based on signed commitments.”

He said all the stakeholders across the value chain had obligations and there would be consequences if they failed to deliver.

“So, in a situation where Gencos are able to deliver 5,000MW but TCN is unable to do so, they’ll pay the penalty to the generation company and so on.

“And whenever the power is available and DisCos do not take the power;

then they will pay liquidated damages that will compensate other market participants.

“We might not have 24/7 power supply from July 1 but Nigerians will see the trajectory because the target is to have an average of 5,000MW daily for transmission and distribution,” said Garba.

He also blamed the recent collapse of the national grid on inadequate gas supply, maintenance of some thermal stations as well as vandalism of power infrastructure and gas pipelines.

Why I Chose Okowa As Running Mate – Atiku (Full Speech)

0

The 2023 presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar has unveiled Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa as his running mate.

This was contrary to a selection made by a 19-Man committee setup to select the party’s vice-presidential candidate. The committee has opted for Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Wike.

Speaking at the unveiling ceremony at the party’s national secreteriat, Atiku revealed that his running mate has to be someone he can ‘work’ with, trust and will support him wholeheartedly to steer the country to greater heights

Below is his full speech at the event;

Let me begin by, once more, commending our great Party for organizing and concluding, arguably, the best and rancour-free Convention, which produced me as our flag-bearer for the next year’s Presidential Election.

Once more, I commend my fellow aspirants in that contest. I thank them for their sportsmanship. They put up spirited fights because they cared and care for our country. I have personally gone around to thank them and to seek their cooperation for the struggle ahead.

Party unity is critical not only for us to prosecute a winning campaign but also to provide good governance that our country seriously deserves and our people earnestly yearn for. The task of winning the coming elections will be a tough one and we must not take anything for granted.

With the convention behind us, we have arrived at the stage for me to pick a Running Mate because this is a joint ticket. I am very happy to announce today that I have reached a decision on that.

In arriving at the decision, I held wide consultations with various stakeholders in our party including our Governors, National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and other leaders to seek their inputs and their wisdom.
In these consultations, I made clear that my running mate would have the potential to succeed me at a moment’s notice, that is, a President-in-waiting.

In other words, the person must have the qualities to be President. The person must have an appreciation of the deep rot which our country has been put into by the rudderless APC government; understands the great suffering that most of our people are going through and the urgency of relieving them of that suffering; understands the critical importance of economic growth and development to provide our young people with jobs, hope, and a pathway to wealth.

The person must appreciate the critical importance of education in the development of modern societies so we can prepare our young people to be able to compete in the increasingly competitive and globalized world.

My running mate must understand that without security, development will be very difficult because local and foreign investors who have been scared away already, would not return to invest in our economy. Thus, my running mate will be a person who will stand by me as a I confront the frightening level of insecurity in our land.

As you know, the APC government went to sleep as huge swathes of our country’s territory fell into the deadly hands of gangs of criminals, including those masquerading as freedom fighters or pastoralists, while our farmers and genuine pastoralists are unable to go about their businesses. The costs in precious human lives and properties have been enormous. My running mate must also not only symbolize the imperative of reuniting our country but also be able to work with me to achieve that objective. This is because a united Nigeria is a potentially stronger, more prosperous, and more secure country able to lead Africa and give hope to the Black race.

In addition, my Running Mate has to be someone who is not afraid to speak his mind and give honest advice, and, be by my side as I work very hard to reverse the destructive impact of the past seven years of the APC government.

In the United States of America from where we borrowed key aspects of our current Presidential system, a running mate is used to balance the ticket, complement the candidate and, after victory, assist the President with governance. Sometimes a candidate is chosen who generates a buzz and adds huge excitement to the campaign.

But today in Nigeria, we face huge challenges which leave us little room for drama. We have to win the elections and get to work immediately. My running mate has to be ready to start working with me, from day one, in addressing our country’s challenges. Nigerians will not accept anything less. That is why I promised the Governors of our party that my running mate will come from among them. Our current challenges call for a government that is highly focused and disciplined.

I have sought for the support, guidance, and counsel of the PDP in selecting a befitting Running Mate who meets all or most of the qualities enumerated above. The wisemen and sages of the Party, put together by our NWC, have gone fishing and brought home an enviable group of awesome politicians that surpasses these qualities. Every one of the recommended persons is a fit and proper individual to hold this office. While this makes me marvel at the bundle of talents that abounds in our Party, it also compounded my task of choosing a single person from among them.

Let me therefore pay tribute to my Party and, most especially, to all those that made the shortlist that must now be narrowed down to a single person. They are all dedicated party-men suitable for this task. I wish all the recommended persons could be announced today as my Running Mates. Unfortunately, only one MUST be chosen.

It is a difficult decision that I am called upon to take. But, as someone hoping to lead a complex country such as ours, tough and difficult decisions would remain a part of my everyday life.
Let me, therefore, start this momentous journey with a crucial decision about who, among the eminently qualified shortlist, would be my Running Mate.

Accordingly, let me state that the person I have chosen as my Running Mate possesses all those identified qualities. He personifies not only the seriousness the current moment represents for our country but also the future that our young people yearn for and deserve. He is a serving State Governor who has demonstrated, in his State and through his conduct, that governance is about service to the people.

I know that he will not only add excitement to our already energized ticket and campaign, but will also help to bring focus, discipline and stability to our government, come 2023. I am pleased, therefore, to announce here my choice of Running Mate who will help to lead us to victory next year not only in the Presidential election but also in the governorship and legislative elections. And he will be by my side as I work hard every day to provide our people with security, revive our economy, improve education and unite our country. He has both Legislative and Executive experiences. Please join me in welcoming to the ticket the next Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Governor Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa.

You know him to be a fighter; you know him to care about winning; you know him to care about good governance; and you know him to care about our people. Now, my dear friends, let’s do the disciplined hard work necessary to win this election. Let’s go. Thank very much.

2021 Ikoyi Collapse: 3 Remaining  Structures Fail Integrity Test, Set For Deconstruction

0

South-west Lagos State Government, on Thursday, is set to deconstruct the three uncompleted high-rise structures on the site of a 21-storey building that collapsed on Gerrard Road, Ikoyi, last November.

The structures have failed integrity tests, prompting the State Government to embark on a controlled deconstruction to bring them down.

A structural engineering firm, Edge of Design, will dismantle the twin 14-storey and eight-storey structures on the site in a manner that will not pose any health or environmental hazards to residents in the neighbourhood.

The deconstruction, which is expected to be completed within 90 days, is to be supervised by relevant agencies of the Government and private stakeholders in the built industry.

The development, it was learnt, is part of the recommendations by a six-man panel that investigated the collapse of the 21-storey structure owned by Messrs Fourscore Heights.

The land on which the failed structures sit has been forfeited to the State Government by law. The panel also recommended criminal prosecution of the developer for contravening the State’s building codes.

No fewer than 45 persons, who were mainly construction workers and vendors, died in the incident. Also, the developer, Mr Femi Osibona, died in the collapsed building.

Representative of the contractor, Edge of Design, Mr. Olujimi Lewu, explained the step-by-step process to be employed in bringing down the structures, that the work would be done without any injury or fatality. He illustrated how the slabs would be removed, until the structures come down.

Commissioner for Information and Strategy Mr. Gbenga Omotoso, at a press briefing held at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre in Government Secretariat in Alausa, said safety would be the main consideration in the deconstruction. He said the press conference was in the spirit of transparency for which the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Oku administration is famous.

He stressed that the deconstruction was agreed upon after extensive consultations with stakeholders, residents and regulators in the built industry.

The Commissioner assured residents in the neighbourhood of their safety throughout the exercise, noting that measures had been put in place to ensure that the contractor maintains the agreed safety protocols.

“The deconstruction will be done with one key focus from all stakeholders; this is safety of people in the neighbourhood and everybody that will be working on the site. The recommendations of the panel are being implemented to prevent this kind of incident,” Omotoso said.

Commissioner for Special Duties, Mr. Tayo Bamgbose-Martins, a civil engineer, assured all that reports on the deconstruction would be regularly shared with the public. He described the contractor as competent.

Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Idris Salako, shed light on why the State Government took over the property, saying: “Section 74 of the Urban and Regional Planning and Development Laws of Lagos State 2019 (as amended) prescribes that any property that collapses in the State is automatically forfeited to the Government.”

Salako said the State Government had not decided on what to do with the site after the deconstruction.

He said: “When the State Government is ready to revive the site, we will let the public know what we want to do with it. However, I can assure you that the land will not be given to any individual developer or converted to unapproved use by the Government. The site will be used for something that will be of benefit the public.”

After the press briefing, the Government’s team moved to Ikoyi to hand over the site to the contractor.

Throwback Thursday: Crown Prince Who Became King At Three

0

Not to be mistaken for the youngest king in the history of the world as there are several others in history who became king even before they could crawl.

Kings like King Shah Shapur II of Persia (before birth), Alfonso XIII of Spain (a day old), Ivan VI of Russia (two months old), and Henry VI of Britain (nine months old).

King Rukirabasaija Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV of Tooro Kingdom in Uganda currently holds the spot in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s youngest reigning monarch. A position he took over from Mswati III of Swaziland who became king by 18.

Unlike many young boys his age, King Oyo was no ordinary boy as he assumed the role of the ruler of Toro kingdom as a toddler after the untimely death of his father.

A Brief History of Tooro Kingdom

The people of Tooro Kingdom also known as the Botoro, are 3.2% of the 35.5 million people of Uganda (as of 2012). Their history dates as far back as the 14th century.

During pre-colonial times, Uganda was made up of several sovereign kingdoms and those kingdoms were ruled by kings and chiefs.

The north and northeastern communities were loosely set up and ruled by clan leaders while other kingdoms in areas like Bunyoro, Buganda, Ankole, and Tooro were organized kingdoms.

History records that the Toro Kingdom was founded in 1830, by prince Olimi Kaboyo Omukama — the eldest son of the king of Bunyoro — when he annexed the southern part of the Bunyoro kingdom.

In 1967, the Tooro monarchy was abolished by Melton Obote, a leader in the nationalist movement who was opposed to the collaboration between the kings and the British Colonial Authorities.

By the 1970s and 1980s, several leaders in the kingdom were forced into exile until 1993, due to an amendment in the Uganda constitution, the monarchy was reinstated.

Oyo’s Reign

In 1995, the king of Tooro Kingdom, King Kaboyo passed away, leaving his only son as the next heir to the throne. In September 1995, by 2 am, a three-year-old Oyo was required to begin his coronation rites.

The ceremony included, a mock battle between the enemy forces of a rebel prince and the royal army, performed at the palace entrance.

There’s also a test carried out by the head of the royal clan the Omusuga which the young prince must pass or be struck by the gods of the land. The test is done to test the divine rights of the new heir to see if he was of royal blood

When King Oyo passed the divine rights test, he was permitted to sound the sacred chwezi drum (Nyalebi) just as his forefathers did before becoming king. After this, he was blessed to rule wisely and successfully. Then, a white hen and a bull were sacrificed in his honor as the entire kingdom celebrated the king.

King Oyo attended the University of Winchester in the United Kingdom — where he graduated with a Bachelor’s degree. Currently 30 years old, and still very close to his mother Queen Olimi, King Oyo is said to be quite passionate about the environment.

Over the years he has shown interest in planting trees and also participating in street cleaning in Fort Portal. Apparently, his doing the best he can to be an outstanding leader to his people.

Exploring Casa De Ferro, Mozambique, A Building Prefabricated In Belgium

0

Casa de Ferro, better known as the Iron House, is a unique and historic building that was built in the capital city of the Republic of Mozambique, Maputo.

Prefabricated in Belgium, and later brought in Mozambique, Casa de Ferro was built in 1892, according to the design of Gustave Eiffel.

As it was built at first on another location, nowadays this interesting structure is located on the Samora Machel Avenue.

In the past, the Portuguese government wanted the Governor of the colony to have a residence where he would work and live, however, it was not thought that the metal building without air-condition would be almost impossible to live and work in.

Still, the building was built with an irregular rectangular plan, with three floors and a pitched roof.

Accessed through staircase that leads on the second floor, which is right at the front of the building, Casa de Ferro is an interesting masterpiece of Eiffel, as it has irregular rows of windows which proved that are not enough for the very hot tropical climate of Maputo.

That is why the building was never used for what it was actually intended, and it was used by several other institutions, even though nowadays is made into a local attractions.

Still, according to some visitors, it is a bit scary to go inside as the floor squeaks, but it is definitely worth to see it in person from the outside.

All in all, being one of the more historic sights in Maputo, the Iron House is closely linked with the Ministry of Culture of Mozambique, and as it was renovated in 2014, it is surrounded with botanical gardens that give a somewhat cooler climate within.

Nigeria Endowed With Commercial Minerals In 500 Locations – Mines And Steel Minister

0

The Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, says Nigeria is endowed with quality commercial minerals in over 500 locations across the country.

Adegbite said this in his speech during the Nigerian Day at the 2022 Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC), International Convention, Trade Show and Investors Exchange in Toronto, Canada on Thursday.

The speech is titled: ”The Mechanisms of Transparency and Commitment in Mining Governance as Tool for Attracting Foreign Direct Investment to Nigeria’’

According to him,  Nigeria is blessed with 44 different types of minerals in commercial quantity in over 500 locations in the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

He said these minerals broadly cut across the various mineral spectrums, adding that these deposits are categorised into five groups according to their uses.

He said these include:  baryte, kaolin, gypsum, feldspar, limestone, energy minerals such as coal, bitumen, lignite, uranium.

Others are: metallic ore minerals, such as gold, cassiterite, columbite, iron ore, lead-zinc, copper; construction minerals such as granite, laterite and sand

Under precious stones are:  sapphire, tourmaline, emerald, topaz, amethyst, garnet among others.

“This clearly demonstrates the wide mineral spectrum we are endowed with, which offers limitless opportunities along the value chain, for job creation, revenue growth and among others.

“Nigeria provides one of the highest rates of return because its minerals are closer to the surface,” he said.

He said that the first phase of mineral exploration project which was the National Integrated Mineral Exploration Programme (NIMEP), designed to rapidly generate bankable geoscientific data had been completed.

He said the aim of the project was to de-risk the sector and attract high caliber investments, adding that target minerals under the first phase include gold, lead-zinc, iron ore, battery minerals, among others.

He said “The contractors have executed and completed the exploration works on Gold, Platinum Group of Elements (PGEs), Lead-Zinc, Iron Ore and Barites;  results on Greenfields and Brownfields are on process to be declared for investment opportunities.”

He said that the Federal Government of Nigeria had in its relentless commitment towards the sector provided support by putting up a strong policy and regulatory structure to attract development.

“That robust structure, line by line, is possibly our strongest argument today, for seeking to attract investment into Nigeria.

“Nigeria has been part of this event for several years because of our determination to see exponential growth of the mining sector’s contribution to our GDP more than it has done in the past forty years.

“We are here to collaborate and network with global leaders, professionals, investors, Chief Executives of junior, mid-tier and major mining companies,” he said.

The minister said that the Federal Government had also commenced the process of retrieving Nigeria’s colonial geological data from the United Kingdom.

He said, “We are engaging the British Geological Survey (BGS) to build a national electronic geo-data archiving management system to be called the Nigerian Geo-Data Center at the Nigerian Geological Survey Agency (NGSA).

“This will provide easy access to geoscience data for prospective investors on potential areas to target for exploration and mining within and outside Nigeria.

“Currently, there is an ongoing review of the Nigerian Minerals and Mining Act 2007.

“The aimed of the review is to bring legislation into conformity with global best practices, limiting the role of government to that of regulation and creating space for the private sector to maintain a more expansive presence in the sector.”

Fisheries Operations: Agriculture Minister Says Government To Support Local Production To Reduce Imports

0

The  Federal Government says over 10 million Nigerians are actively engaged in primary and secondary fisheries operations in the sub-sector of the economy.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mohammad Abubakar, made this known at the close of the Internal Coordination Meeting of Implementation of Fisheries Governance Project Phase 2 (FisheriesGov 2), in Abuja.

Abubakar said government would support them to boost local production in order to reduce imports, as it is currently encouraging backward integration through commercial aquaculture production.

” The Fisheries and Aquaculture subsector is very significant to the Nigerian economy in terms of employment creation, income generation, poverty alleviation, foreign exchange earnings and provision of raw materials for the animal feed industry.

” It is estimated that over 10 million Nigerians are actively engaged in primary and secondary Fisheries operations, thus creating wealth for our people and we will be happy if they can benefit from this project.

” Nigeria’s total demand for Fish is 3.6 Million Tons annually while we are producing 1.1 Million Tons from all sources (Artisanal, Aquaculture,  and Industrial sectors).

“Leaving a deficit of about 2.5 Million Tons that my ministry is working hard in collaboration with the private sector to supplement by way of import reduction through backward integration.

” To boost local production in order to reduce imports, Government is encouraging backward integration through commercial aquaculture production (pond and cage culture) for local consumption and export and this is yielding positive results,” he said.

The minister said that Federal Government had also put in place measures to boost the fisheries subsector.

” It is gratifying to bring to your notice measures the Federal Government has introduced to enabled the Fisheries subsector gain the desired prominence.

” These measures include: establishment of Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) in Lagos and Abuja to monitor and control Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing along Nigeria Continental Shel.

” Also Fish Storage, Processing and Marketing Project to increase shelf life/ keeping quality and curtail post harvest losses of Fish and Fishery Products.

” As well as Fish Farm Clusters to increase Fish production and engage the teeming youths and women and Lake Enhancement Project to increase Fish Production and make for sustainable livelihood for the Fisher folks.

” All these programs are tailored towards job and wealth creation, poverty reduction, arrest and prevention of youth restiveness and food nutrition security,” he said.

He said that recommendations from the workshop would be used to improve Nigeria’s governance mechanism for maximum productivity in her fisheries subsector.

Abubakar tasked stakeholders at the meeting on subjecting every item on the agenda to scrutiny and come up with sustainable and practicable governance strategies for implementation to boost fish production in Africa.

Earlier, Dr Nick Nwankpa, Acting Director, The African Union Interafrican Bureau for Animal Resources (AU-IBAR), said the project  recognised the importance of institutional collaboration for the sustainable exploitation and management of fisheries, aquaculture and other blue economy resources.

He said the fisheries governance would also take cognisance of functions of the various African Union Commission (AUC ) departments, when well-coordinated.

He said this could contribute significantly to the integrated development of the sector and the socio-economic advancement of the continent.
