The Provost, Lagos State College of Nursing, Igando, Mrs. Oyefunso Orenuga, has called on nurses and midwives to have a reformative mindset.

This, she said, would go a long way in impacting their patients and transforming the healthcare sector.

According to a statement by the state Ministry of Information on Wednesday, Orenuga spoke at a seminar organised by the college to celebrate the 2022 International Nurses Day.

She said the seminar with the theme “Psychology of behaviour: Your mindset is everything,” was part of the continuous efforts to expose students of the college to the growth mindset, thereby paving way for professional excellence.

The statement also quoted the guest speaker, Jide Ologun, as listing the components of a growth mindset to include motivation, information, networking, determination, strategy, excellence and transformation.

The President of the college’s Students Association, Martins Ebubeogu, appreciated the provost and management of the college for putting up the seminar to impact the nurses and midwives. He implored the students to use the knowledge acquired at the seminar to enhance their profession and careers.

FCT minister orders indefinite closure of Dei-Dei market

FCT Minister Mohammad Bello, on Wednesday ordered the indefinite closure of Dei – Dei International Market following a clash between commercial motorcyclists and the traders.

Bello gave the order after inspecting the scene of the incident with FCT Commissioner of Police Sunday Babaji, Director State Security Services, other sister security agencies and top officials of the FCT Administration.

Trouble started in the market when a female trader yet to be identified fell off a commercial motorcycle and was crushed to death by an articulated vehicle.

The minister directed the community and the market leaders to fish out the hoodlums responsible for the crisis.

” The community and market leaders must fish out hoodlums and bad eggs among them, unfortunately this time around hoodlums carry arms and they shot innocent people.

” As a matter of fact, I saw four corpses this is very sad and totally unequivocally unacceptable in Abuja.

“We have agreed with security agencies that full scale investigations will be done, and the communities have to be part and parcel of the solution or else there will be no peace.

” In the interim the timber market and the surrounding markets, including all the activities on road that have clustered the road and made it unpassable will all stop untill the technical team reviews everything, and then we will take the next decision.”

Bello said that there was no tribal or religious misunderstanding because all the leadership of various communities have lived in peace for many years.

The wife of Lagos State Governor, Dr. Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, has called on parents to help kick out drug abuse among boys and pay special attention to their male children.

Ibijoke made this call, according to a statement on Wednesday, at the inaugural parenting seminar held at the Lagos House, Alausa, Ikeja.

She said, “Our boy-child interventions are aimed at making a positive difference. It is gratifying that it is already catching the fancy of the international community, and I must say we are open to partnerships to scale up our programmes to support the boy-child and secure their future.

“Parents have a lot to do to address the plight of the boy-child. The issue of the boy child is a burning one that parents must pay special attention to because if we don’t, the boy child is at risk.

“As parents, for instance, we need to desist from exerting pressure on our boys; we need to kick out drug abuse; we just have to focus on all issues affecting the boy child.”

The governor’s wife also called on the United Nations to recognise May 16 to commemorate the boy-child to promote their welfare and wellbeing.

“I want to renew the call on the UN to fully recognise May 16 as the International Day of the Boy Child in order to deepen initiatives and interventions targeted at promoting the interest, welfare, and wellbeing of the boy-child globally.

“This seminar was aimed at ensuring that parents have an in-depth understanding of the nitty-gritty of effective approaches to the upbringing of the boy-child in order to address social vices such as rape, drug abuse, cultism, bullying, and others,” she added.

Lagos Set To Receive 40km Huperloop

Well known for having enterprising population, it should not be surprising that Nigeria’s largest city, Lagos, may soon be home to one of the world’s most innovative transportation systems.

Silicon Valley-based, skyTran, which is headquartered at NASA Research Park, has developed patented new personal and cargo transportation systems which it intends to deploy in Nigeria and elsewhere around the world.

The systems, known as Personal Rapid Transit (PRT) and Cargo Rapid Transit (CRT), use MagLev technology and encompass an elevated rail, along the underside of which levitating, energy-efficient pods travel.

According to reports, once the pods reach a speed of just 10mph, they can glide without any additional power but are also able to travel at speeds of up to 155mph.

The company also says the system can be installed for approximately $13m per mile, compared to around $160m per mile for an underground rail system.

The company has a demonstrator system in Israel, which reportedly showcases all the components required to roll out a commercial system and is also used for testing, monitoring, and improvement of the technology.

Rolls-Royce will deliver two MTU Onsite Energy natural gas-fueled combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) trigeneration systems to Richmond University Medical Center, a Level I trauma center in Staten Island, New York (USA). Rated at 1,500 kWe each and guaranteeing performance under high ambient conditions, the CCHP units will provide clean and efficient continuous power to the 114-year-old trauma center.

A Level-1 trauma center in Staten Island, New York is adding a natural gas-fueled onsite cogeneration plant so the hospital can produce its own power.

Rolls-Royce is providing two combined cooling, heating and power (CCHP) trigeneration units for Richmond University Medical Center (RUMC).

The system is expected to provide the hospital’s daily power needs, while generating steam for hot water, heating and air conditioning.

The project will begin powering the hospital in Fall 2022, hospital officials said.

Rated at 1.5MW each, the CCHP units are to be housed in a former laundry facility adjacent to the hospital. The project is being managed by developer Innovative Energy Strategies (IES) and is part of RUMC’s multi-million dollar expansion.

While RUMC will remain connected to the grid, the cogeneration plant will allow it to become self-sufficient, especially during emergency situations. The hospital has recognized the need for an alternative power supply system following outages caused by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

Exploring And Engineering Marvel, Falkirk Wheel, United Kingdom

0

The Falkirk Wheel is an interesting engineering marvel that represents a rotating boat lift, and it is located in the town that has the same name, Falkirk, in the Central Lowlands of Scotland, within the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

Built in order to connect the Forth and Clyde Canal with the Union Canal, it is the world’s only rotating boat-lift that is used also as a great attraction to allure people to come and visit the area.

This magnificent, mechanical marvel was built in order to replace a series of lock gates which were built in 19 century, and soon after its completion it became Scotland’s most exciting example of 21 century engineering.

Part of one of the biggest engineering projects that were undertaken by the British Waterways, the Millennium Link Project, the Falkirk Wheel is a successful example of regenerating the canals of Central Scotland, as well as reconnecting once again one of the bigger cities in the country, Glasgow and Edinburgh.

As the boats are approaching from the higher Union Canal, they go through two locks, and then progress through a new long tunnel which is 168 meters (551 feet) long and emerges at the start of a concrete aqueduct which is 104 meters (341 feet) long.

Then the boats continue towards the far end of this aqueduct which opens directly into the upper of the two carrier gondolas of the Falkirk Wheel.

After that is when the “magic” happens, and as the wheel rotates and descends, it goes into a basin which is some 100 meters (328 feet) in diameter, and later with one final lock at the far end of the basin, the boats are finally lowered to the level of the Forth and Clyde Canal.

Being one of the more interesting things that deserve to be seen in person, unfortunately, the people coming to see it come by car instead of using the canals.

Still, since its opening on 24 May 2002, the Falkirk Wheel enjoys great attention and since it is one of its kind in the world, it well deserves to be called the Marvel of 21 Century.

All in all, continuing to be used for connecting Scotland’s canals and cities, this tourist attraction shall be used as an example of how something that was in the imagination of the engineers became a reality.

Throwback Thursday: Lauterbrunnen, Switzerland, The 12th Century Village With Long-Standing History

68

Lauterbrunnen is a small but very interesting village and municipality that is located in a trough valley which is filled with impressive landscape, settled in the Canton of Bern within the Swiss Confederation.

As it is sometimes known by its other more describing name, the Valley of 72 Waterfalls, Lauterbrunnen lies at the bottom of a U-shaped valley that extends some 8 km (5 mi) when it meets the Lauterbrunnen Wall, which is actually a mountain wall comprised of the Bernese Alps.

As the village has a long-standing history, dating back as far as 1240, there were some archaeological findings of a single Roman coin which was discovered in the Blumental, which confirms that the area had residents living around the sheer rock walls for plenty of time.

Still, the history is hypnotized from the sound of water that is rushing down the steep rocks, among which the most impressive and most photographed is the closest one to the village, the Staubach Waterfall.

With a height of 297 meters (974 feet), the plunging waterfall is definitely the first thing one would see when arriving to Lauterbrunnen. In addition to that, the traditional Swiss wooden houses are a definite sign that whatever photo one is taking here, it will be, simply said, breathtaking.

The tallest structure is the Lauterbrunnen village church which appears to be a simple in design, yet its wooden spire rises high above everything else. With plenty of visitors, the tiny picturesque village is one of the most amazing places a person can visit, and with the hikes that are even more amazing, everyone would want to return and be stunned by the stupendous vistas.
