Lassa virus found in semen of survivors 12 months after

2

A study by researchers at Irrua Specialist Teaching Hospital, Edo State, has found that the Lassa virus persists in the seminal fluid of patients up to 12 months after recovery from illness.

The two-year cohort study conducted between Jan 31, 2018, to Dec 11, 2019, is already published in The Lancet.

The study was a collaboration between ISTH and Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Germany.

Within the two years, over 4,800 samples from 159 patients, which included 49 women and 110 men, were collected and analysed in the laboratory at ISTH.

Results showed that one month after being discharged, Lassa viruses were still present in the plasma, urine, saliva, lacrimal fluid, vaginal fluid and seminal fluid of Lassa fever survivors.

However, all body fluids apart from the semen were free of the virus at three months. The semen continued to contain the Lassa virus up to 12 months after discharge, according to a report published by the Nigerian Healthwatch.

According to the researchers, this means that Lassa virus RNA is shed in various body fluids after recovery from acute disease and the persistence of the infectious virus in seminal fluid implies a risk of sexual transmission of Lassa fever.

Commenting on the research, Director of the research and principal investigator Dr. Ephraim Ogbaini-Emovon, erstwhile Coordinator/Director, Institute of Lassa Fever Research and Control said this was the first study to demonstrate that Lassa fever is potentially sexually transmissible.

Speaking with Nigerian Health Watch, Ogbaini-Emovon said, “Our findings have implications for sexual health, infection control and public health.

“We now have the evidence to recommend barrier methods of preventing sexually transmitted diseases, such as the use of condoms for male survivors of Lassa fever.

“In addition, sexual health education, counselling, and post-discharge follow-up testing of male survivors are recommended to prevent further transmission of the disease.

“Furthermore, the results from this study form a good basis for further studies on the clinical implications for persisting viruses in the male reproductive system.”

The researchers also called for a modification of follow-up practises for people who survived Lassa fever.

Giants Cote d’Ivoire and Egypt lock horns on Wednesday as the Round of 16 of the ongoing TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, Cameroon 2021 gains full momentum.

Round of 16

Match: Cote d’Ivoire v Egypt

At the Japoma stadium and after beating Algeria, the Elephants will face a Egypt that did not impress a lot in the group stage.

After losing 0-1 against Nigeria for their start, Egypt won narrowly 1-0 against Guinea Bissau and Sudan to reach the Round of 16.

But it’s a totally different story now. Egypt remains a formidable opponent and the Ivorians know that the Pharaohs have often blocked their way in the Africa Cup of Nations finals.

For their 5th AFCON title, the Pharaohs at home beat the Elephants in the 2006 final on penalties, and two years later for their 6th continental trophy, the Egyptians knocked out the Ivorians in the semi-finals in Ghana 2008.

Enough for the Elephants to be cautious for this round of 16 even if they rather managed an almost perfect match (3-1) against Les Fennecs of Algeria.

Unlike Egypt, Côte d’Ivoire did not lose any matches during the group stage and gave the impression of gaining momentum at the start of the competition.

And in addition, with three games played on this lawn and two games won, the Ivorian team has taken its bearings to face any opponent whether it is Egypt or another.

What they said

Patrice Beaumelle (Coach, Cote d’Ivoire)

“’This outsider status suits us very well; we know where we are going. We are happy to have finished first in our group, now that is behind us because we will face a great team from Egypt with players who are used to playing in Africa. This will be a tactical match, closed but very exciting. The most important thing is that we want to continue our way’.”

Sébastien Haller (Forward, Cote d’Ivoire)

“’I’m happy to be here. It’s good to count on players who won the 2015 AFCON. They bring us a lot of experience. We want to go all the way like all the teams present here. Egypt is a great football nation which is always present at these events, with genius players like Mo Salah. It is a knockout match that can be played over 90 minutes or more. We are preparing for a tactical match which can also be closed.”

Carlos Queiroz, (Coach, Egypt)

“Egypt are getting stronger in this competition. From the first to the last group game, you have noticed that the team is better. Against Cote d’Ivoire, we will ignore the past to focus on the present. We are going to make sure that the best team on the pitch is Egypt. Tomorrow we can please the millions of fans across Egypt. We have great players and we are a beautiful team”.

Mohamed Salah (Captain, Egypt)

“I want to call on the public to encourage all the players present in this team. Everyone must move in the same direction, we are a team and we must have all the support of the fans. Cote d’Ivoire is a great team, it won’t be easy but we proved that we are improving game after game. We will go to play and win.

Mohamed Salah: AFCON Is The Most Important Competition To Me

0

He may be a world-class star who has won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League, but Mohamed Salah has only one trophy in mind and heart: the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations.

“I lost it in Gabon 2017 against Cameroon in the final, but I can assure you that it is the trophy that I want to win most. I work to win it and that is the story with all the Egyptian players present here, Salah said

“AFCON is an extremely difficult competition and from the start, you have seen that even the best teams are struggling to win,” recalled the Liverpool striker.

Egypt, with its seven trophies, is there to win the 2021 edition of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations, but that requires a big performance on Wednesday against Côte d’Ivoire.

“Before thinking of revenge against Cameroon, we will have to overcome several giant sides,” he said.

“Against Cote d’Ivoire it won’t be easy, but our team is gaining momentum. It will be a very tight match,” concluded Salah.

The Duchess of Cambridge is coming up as the people’s choice for the office of colonel. Grenadier guard, It comes after the regiment’s previous colonel, the Duke of York, was stripped of all his military affiliations and royal patronages by the queen herself, earlier this month, as he faces a civil sexual assault trial in the US.

A senior source in the Grenadier Guards said  “From straw polling through the ranks, they would all love it to be Kate. We all admire the way she has fitted in and behaved, she never seems to put a foot wrong. Everything she has taken on she really commits to, and we want someone who will really engage with us.”

If the duchess, takes on the role, she will be the second appointed female colonel in its 366-year history.

The duke of York, 61, took over the honorary role with the grenadier guards from his late father, the Duke of Edinburgh, when Prince Philip retired in 2017.

But Andrew then stepped back from public duties in November 2019 following his interview with BBC news night.

The duke has been disallowed from using any of his titles including, honorary air commodore of Raf Lossiemouth; colonel-in-chief of the Royal Irish Regiment; colonel-in-chief of the small arms school corps; commodore-in-chief of the fleet air arm; royal colonel of the royal highland fusiliers, 2nd battalion, the royal regiment of Scotland; deputy colonel-in-chief of the royal lancers (queen Elizabeth’s own); and colonel-in-chief of the Yorkshire regiment.

Flying Car Issued With Certificate Of Airworthiness

A flying car capable of hitting speeds over 100mph (160kmh) and altitudes above 8,000ft (2,500m) has been issued with a certificate of airworthiness by the Slovak Transport Authority.

The hybrid car-aircraft, AirCar, is equipped with a BMW engine and runs on regular petrol-pump fuel.

It takes two minutes and 15 seconds to transform from car into aircraft.

The certification followed 70 hours of flight testing and more than 200 take-offs and landings, the company said.

“AirCar certification opens the door for mass production of very efficient flying cars,” its creator, Prof Stefan Klein, said.

“It is official and the final confirmation of our ability to change mid-distance travel forever.”

In June, the flying car completed a 35-minute flight between international airports in Nitra and Bratislava, Slovakia.

The three-wheeled PAL-V Liberty, which flies like a gyrocopter, is road legal in Europe and working towards European Union Aviation Safety Agency certification.

James Webb Telescope Arrives Position In Space

0

Thirty days after it was launched, the James Webb telescope has arrived at the position in space where it will observe the Universe.

The Lagrange Point 2, as it’s known, is a million miles (1.5 million km) from Earth on its nightside.

Webb was finally nudged into an orbit around this location thanks to a short, five-minute thruster burn.

Controllers back on Earth will now spend the coming months tuning the telescope to get it ready for science.

Key tasks include switching on the observatory’s four instruments, and also focusing its mirrors – in particular, its 6.5m-wide segmented primary reflector.

Toxic Forever Chemicals Discovered In British Otters

0

Toxic “forever chemicals” used in non-stick saucepans and food packaging have been found in otters across England and Wales, according to a study.

The substances, called PFASs, are also used in waterproof clothing, stain-resistant products and fire retardants.

The chemicals are linked to pregnancy complications, liver disease, cancer and other illnesses.

Scientists say concentrations of these compounds in otters are a guide to levels of pollution in the environment.

The substances can leach out from products, getting into drains and sewage treatment works – from which they can then escape and contaminate the environment more widely.

PFAS substances are present in farmland sludge, which can wash from fields into rivers. Factories and landfill sites are other sources for the chemicals.

Denmark recently banned their use in food packaging paper.

Used since the late 1940s, PFAS chemicals – which are divided into compounds called perfluoroalkyls and polyfluoroalkyls – help to make products water, grease and stain-resistant.

They are known as “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down easily in the environment. They contaminate fish, which can then be ingested by animals and humans. PFAS compounds can also get directly into drinking water.

Lake Hillier – Brightest Bubblegum-Pink Lake

0

Picture a lake of the brightest bubblegum-pink sitting beside the deepest blue ocean.

Lake Hillier is one of the extraordinary sights you’ll see flying or cruising through the pristine wilderness of the Recherche Archipelago.

Located on Middle Island, the largest of the Recherche islands and is 11 kilometres from the coast of Cape Arid National Park.

The lake is separated from the Southern Ocean by just a thin strip of sand and it’s widely believed that the water’s permanent strawberry milkshake colour is due to the extremely high level of salinity.

This discovery was made as early as 1802, when Matthew Flinders led an expedition to the islands and collected a sample from the lake, but there has been no definitive proof that salt is the source of its unique hue.

Measuring just 600 metres wide and shaped like a footprint, this relatively small feature has a huge impact when viewed from a scenic flight or cruise, and the untouched islands of the Recherche Archipelago create a stunning backdrop, rich in marine life.

US Superstores To Power Over 7.9 Million Households With Solar

0

A new report released by the Environment America Research and Policy Center and the Frontier Group states that America’s big-box retail and grocery stores if equipped with rooftop solar could produce enough electricity to power more than 7.9 million households.

Large retail establishments, also called big-box stores, could generate 84.4TWh of solar capacity and California has the potential to produce the highest capacity, enough to power 870,000 households, according to the study.

Big-box stores and shopping centers could replace half of their annual electricity use by fully building out their rooftop solar potential, states the study.

In addition to helping ensure the stability of the grid, equipping the stores with solar would help owners reduce energy bills, achieve sustainability goals, as well as help communities ensure better air quality.

Moreover, store rooftop solar PV projects could help cut electricity losses incurred during energy transmission and distribution.

Florida, Texas, Ohio and Illinois states have also been identified as regions with the potential to help the US speed up its energy revolution through the use case.

Amongst the big-box companies, Walmart is producing the most capacity from solar. The company produces three times more solar energy than its closest competitors per annum.

Walmart has to date saved over $1 million in energy bills owing to onsite solar PV projects.

Other leaders include Apple, Amazon and Target.
