Buhari Government looks to 5G to improve security as Nigerians raise concerns

0

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday in Abuja directed all the security institutions to immediately leverage Fifth Generation (5G) technology, when deployed, to enhance security in the country.

The President who launched the National Policy on 5G for Nigeria’s Digital Economy, said the Federal Government will take full advantage of the opportunities provided by the 5G to address challenges in the economy, security and well-being of the nation.

President Buhari, while allaying fears over health safety of 5G, affirmed that such issues have been ”effectively addressed” in developing a Policy that suits the country.

The concerns over the deployment of the 5th generation technology has been further heightened by recent reports of United States’ leading airlines calling on the Biden administration not implement 5G technology near airports, stating to do so would cause “significant operation disruption” to air passengers, shippers and supply chains.

UN, secretary-general, António Guterres has expressed that he is particularly worried about the whereabouts and safety of President Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, who hasn’t been seen since the crisis in Burkina Faso began as well as the worsening security situation that has rocked the countries capital  Ouagadougou.

Calling on all actors to exercise restraint and opt for dialogue, Mr. Guterres asked the coup leaders to lay down their arms and to ensure the protection of the President “and of the institutions of Burkina Faso.

Reiterating the UN’s full commitment to the preservation of the constitutional order, the Secretary-General reaffirmed the Organization’s support to the people of Burkina Faso in their efforts to find solutions to the multifaceted challenges facing the country.

Earlier in the month, the UN Special Representative for West Africa and the Sahel told the Security Council this resurgence “is often the consequence of political practices that are completely out of step with the aspirations of the populations.”

Hosts Cameroon are through to the quarter finals of the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021 following an eventful 2-1 victory over Comoros.

Karl Toko Ekambi gave the Indomitable Lions lead just before the half hour mark with a neat finish inside the area.

Captain Vincent Aboubakar doubled their advantage 20 minutes from time before Comoros captain Youssouf M’Changama pulled a goal back from free kick.

Defender Chaker Alhadhur started in goal for Comoros who were without their recognised goalkeepers for the last 16 match at the Stade Olembe in Yaoundé.

The debutants had a difficult start against Cameroon when captain Nadjim Abdou was sent off after 7 minutes for a foul on Moumi Ngamaleu.

With a man down Comoros put up brave performance against the Indomitable Lions. Andre Onana had to be at his best to keep Cameroon in the match, the Ajax goalkeeper pulled the first save of the match inside two minutes.

Onana parried away Youssouf M’Changama free kick before Collins Fai cleared the rebound.

Aboubakar was presented a great chance to increase his tournament tally, when Ekambi found him in space but his effort went wide.

Ekambi scored from a Aboubakar’s pass to ease the pressure on the home faithful with a well taken strike.

Onana denied Comoros with a double save to keep Cameroon’s lead on 32 minutes. Ahmed Mogni fired a low goal bound strike which Onana turned away before blocking Mohamed Baki’s follow up strike.

The second half was more open with both side creating chances while both goalkeepers pulled brilliant saves.

Chaker Alhadhur denied Aboubakar seven minutes after the restart with a great save.

Aboubakar found the back of the net but he was flagged offside on 64 minutes as Cameroon search for the winner.

The tournament’s leading scorer got his goal on 70 minutes to become the first player in the 21st century to score more than 5 goals in a single TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations finals.

Comoros pulled a goal back from Youssouf M’Changama’s long range free kick to set up for a thrilling end.

Onana had earlier saved Abdallah Ali Mohamed and El Fardou Ben Mohamed to send the hosts through.

The Indomitable Lions will face The Gambia who beat Guinea to progress to the quarter finals.

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has stopped the registration of alcohol in sachet, small volume PET and glass bottles below 200 millilitres.

Mojisola Adeyeye, Director-General, NAFDAC revealed this in a statement on Monday where she mentioned that the ban was effected following the recommendation of a high powered Committee of the Federal Ministry of Health and NAFDAC on one hand, Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and Industry represented by the Association of Food, Beverages and Tobacco Employers (AFBTE), Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria (DIBAN) in December 2018.

“Producers of alcohol in sachets and small volume agreed to reduce production by 50 percent with effect from January 31st, 2022 while ensuring the products are completely phased out in the country by 31st January 2024,” she said.

In addition, the agency will ensure that the validity of renewal of already registered alcoholic products in the affected category does not exceed the year 2024.

This move by the food and drug regulator is part of measures to curb the abuse of alcohol across the country.

Nigeria’s sports minisiter, Sunday Dare has commended the Super Eagles, even though the ultimate objective of lifting the Africa Cup of Nations was not achived.

In a 11-paragraph press release, the minister concluded that the Super Eagles will still soar higher as they prepare for the higher stake, which is to qualify for the World Cup.

“From all indications, Nigeria believes in them. President Muhammadu Buhari believes in them and I, as Minister, also have full belief in them.

“They will in fact be encouraged and supported to qualify for the Qatar  2022 World Cup finals later this year and the 2023 African Cup of Nations Tournament in Cote’d Voire next year. This Super Eagles team will show the world the great heights to which truly they can soar”, Sunday Dare remarked.

He commended  Austin Eguavoen and the coaching staff and concluded that they  gave a strong performance.

“They faced the challenge bravely and gave a good account of themselves. They did their very best and that is all we can ask of them.”

Continuing, the minister remarked “We will lift the spirit of our boys and as professionals they will look beyond AFCON and continue to work with their technical team to ensure  continuous improvement.

“The overall performance of the team during this tournament shows we have regained our better footing and are heading in the proper direction.

“Our football, once again was fluid, purposeful and beautiful to watch. We have a good team and Nigeria will help them to get better.

“I also want to use this opportunity to thank soccer-loving Nigerians who followed the team’s participation at the competition. I thank the Nigeria Football Federation(NFF) for rising up to the task and for its commitment to ensuring that every support was given to the team.

“I have been assured by the NFF leadership that its technical team will conduct a comprehensive appraisal and lessons learned will be exercised on this AFCON experience.

“We will emerge from this better, stronger, more aware of what we need to improve on and make this team satisfy the aspirations of an eager and hopeful football loving nation.”

External reserves decline to 3-month low on CBN’s FX market intervention

0

Nigeria’s external reserves have declined to $40.31 billion as of January 21, 2022, the lowest since October 29, 2021, when it stood at $41.82 billion, representing a 3.61 percent decline.

This according to analysts at Coronation Research was due to continued interventions by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) in the Foreign Exchange (FX) markets.

“Our view remains that the CBN’s position is strong as the level of FX reserves remains high in the long-term context.”

Hence, it seems possible that stability will be maintained in the Investors and Exporters (I&E) window and Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange Fixing (NAFEX) rates in the near term,” the analysts at Coronation said.

Last week at the interbank foreign exchange market, the naira/dollar exchange rate closed flat at N430.00/USD amid CBN’s weekly injections of $210 million, said Cowry Asset analysts.

FG sets aside PIA, to pay N4.6tr on fuel subsidy

0

With all things considered, the Federal Government, yesterday, soft-pedalled on its initial plan to remove subsidy on petrol, setting aside its much-trumpeted Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) to continue paying about N4.6 trillion provided crude oil price hovers around $85 per barrel.

The Guardian had exclusively reported last Friday that petrol may sell for N403 per litre, representing the current landing cost of the product, as against its current price of N165 from July 1, this year.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited had revealed that Nigeria consumes about 19.535 billion litres of petrol yearly, averaging 1.6 billion litres monthly. With about N241 now paid on every litre as subsidy, this brings yearly subsidy to about N4.6 trillion.

CSOs storm APC, PDP headquarters, demand southern president in 2023

0

The battle over the region to produce Nigeria’s next President took another dimension, yesterday, as over 1,000 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) barricaded the headquarters of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), requesting both parties to pick their presidential candidates for the 2023 general elections from the southern part of the country.

The protesters, under the auspices of the Coalition of Civil Society Groups in Nigeria (CCSG), displayed banners and chanted solidarity songs in Abuja, insisting that heeding the call would save the nation from possible instability

Some of the inscriptions read, “Please respect power rotation, power rotation is not negotiable,” “We support a united Nigeria, one nation great people,” “Southern presidency now, the southern presidency for national unity.”

President of CCSG, Bassey Etuk Williams, who spoke on behalf of the coalition, restated that the appeal was also to engender fairness and uphold the unity of the country.

SAN, six other lawyers may be sanctioned over conflicting orders

0

President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Olumide Akpata, yesterday, hinted that a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and six other lawyers believed to have aided judges in the issuance of conflicting orders might soon face the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee.

He made the disclosure at a press conference in Abuja, where he addressed stakeholders on the rationale behind this year’s Justice Sector Summit held today in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). It is organised by NBA in conjunction with others.

Akpata, while fielding questions from journalists on the position of the association’s committee earlier set up to look into the roles of lawyers in the issuance of conflicting orders by some judges, confirmed that a full report had been submitted to the body’s National Executive Council (NEC).

AMAZON SET TO BUILD NEW HEADQUARTERS ON SOUTH AFRICAN ANCESTRAL LAND

0

South Africa’s indigenous Khoi and san tribes are currently in court to block American company amazon, from building what is to be their headquarters on their ancestral land.

The site is scheduled to be developed into a 70,000-square-meter complex that will house Amazon and other businesses, but locals say, the project will ruin a historically significant riverside site in Cape Town and harm the environment.

Tauriq Jenkins, high commissioner of the Goringhaicona Khoi Khoin Indigenous Traditional Council, one of the groups fighting the project said “We’re in a situation where a terrain that is so sacred to the people of our country is not just under threat, but being damaged and destroyed as we speak,”

Construction has already begun at the site, which houses a restaurant and golf course

In a statement, company spokesperson James Tannenberger said the opposing community group and Indigenous council led by Jenkins “have been driving a misinformation campaign …after their concerns were validly dismissed by the competent authorities during the comprehensive three-year development approval process.”

Property owners Liesbeek Leisure Properties Trust, or LLPT, also said it has consulted Indigenous groups while planning the site’s redevelopment

The current divide within the Indigenous community is complex as some Indigenous leaders have given their approval to the project, Tannenberger added.

He said the new site will also pay tribute to their history by including a museum and memorial site, along with creating low-income housing and jobs

The Khoi Khoi and San were some of the country’s first inhabitants and their presence in the southern tip of Africa dates back thousands of years. Their lands were lost to colonial settlements in the 1600s.
