The Gambia forward Musa Barrow says he wants to continue his impressive performance at the TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations Cameroon 2021.
Barrow, whose late penalty earned the debutants a 1-1 stalemate against Mali in Limbé on Sunday, already has an assist to his name in the tournament.
“I am prepared and focus to continue from where I left of the last game,” Barrow told CAFOnline.com.
The marked their first ever match at an AFCON with a 1-0 victory over Mauritania before drawing against the Eagles.
“This shows that teamwork matters, we qualified to this tournament because we played and defended as a team, we try to play fast transitions when we recover the ball.
“When we play, we always try to help and push one another on the pitch; we play as a team and try to improve game by game.”
The Bologna man is one of Tom Saintfiet’s star players as he can play across the front three.
Known for scoring sublime goals from distance, Barrow like every Gambian is proud to be at AFCON.
“As a Gambian I feel honoured and happy to be able to represent my country at the highest level of African Football.”
The 23-year-old was named match of the man on his tournament debut against Mauritania, he played in Ablie Jallow, who scored The Gambia’s first goal at AFCON.
“It was a brilliant goal by Ablie, who was in a good position, I knew his qualities, so I tried to quickly pass him,” Musa added.
The man who is fondly called “Laka” has set his sights on achieving more surprises in Cameroon.
“I’m sure there will be a lot of surprises in this tournament,” said Barrow. “African football is growing and there are a lot of professional players in each team here.”
The Scorpions, who sit at the summit of Group F level on four points with Mali, take on Tunisia in their last group game on Thursday at the 20,000-seater Omnisports Stadium in Limbé.
“We always learn from each game, playing as a team and continue to be humble and stay focus and Insh’Allah (God willing) results will come,” he concluded
Hosts Cameroon cemented top spot in Group A at the Africa Cup of Nations following a 1-1 draw with Cape Verde.
The Indomitable Lions took the lead when captain Vincent Aboubakar drilled home his fifth goal of the tournament after 39 minutes.
Cape Verde equalised eight minutes after the break as half-time substitute Garry Rodrigues stylishly flicked home.
Aboubakar should have won it midway through the second half only to blaze over the bar with the goal gaping.
Unbeaten in their capital since 1988, the result means Cameroon will remain in stronghold Yaounde for their last-16 tie against a third-placed side from Group C, D or E on Monday, 24 January.
Cape Verde finished third in the group on four points, behind Burkina Faso in the table on head-to-head record, and the Blue Sharks face a wait to see if they will progress as one of four best third-placed sides.
At the last Nations Cup, four points was good enough to reach the last 16, just as it was for teams at both the 2016 and 2020 European Championships.
Aboubakar equals Indomitable Lions record
With Cape Verde drawing 1-1 and knowing a point might take them through, their fans must have feared the worst after goalkeeper Vozinha spilled a cross into the path of the tournament’s top scorer – only for Aboubakar to flash the ball over the crossbar from ten yards out.
It was a finish that belied the striker’s fine form, after the 29-year-old had earlier equalled a national record set by Cameroon legend, and now national FA president, Samuel Eto’o.
The top scorer in Nations Cup history with 18 goals, Eto’o scored five goals in both the 2006 and 2008 tournaments – a record that is looking in danger with four matches possibly left for the five-time champions to play.
Aboubakar had the best of Cameroon’s chances, volleying powerfully over early on before forcing Vozinha to tip a long-distance shot around the post.
His goal came after Moumi Ngamaleu’s free-kick was headed away by Cape Verde’s Diney Borges, with Aboubakar unerringly finding the bottom corner with a firm left-footed strike as he latched onto the loose ball.
Blue Sharks survive Cameroon onslaught
Instead of feeling sorry for themselves after falling behind, Cape Verde instantly rallied towards the end of the first half when goalkeeper Andre Onana was almost caught out by a deep cross as the island nation started knocking on the door.
Their goal silenced a boisterous crowd inside Olembe Stadium, as Rodrigues flicked in Rocha Santos’ cutback from the byeline with his right heel to leave Onana stranded.
Aboubakar’s golden chance to win the game came shortly after, and his miss was soon followed by Samuel Oum Gouet firing straight at Vozinha as Cape Verde weathered Cameroon’s storm.
Forcing a series of corners after coach Toni Conceicao sent on the cavalry in the shape of forwards Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting and Clinton Njie, Cameroon were unable to break down a resolute Cape Verde defence as Njie and another substitute, Olivier Mbaizo, went close.
But Cape Verde held on and will now have to watch on anxiously to see if their four points will be enough to take them into the knock-out stage for only the second time in their history.
The Super Eagles star is back in competitive action after almost two months out with a broken left cheekbone and orbit
Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen played his first game in 57 days after he was introduced in the 70th minute to help Napoli to a 2-0 victory away at Bologna.
The Napoli hitman suffered a left cheekbone and orbital fracture after colliding with Milan Skriniar in Napoli’s Serie A loss to Inter Milan on the 21st of November 2021.
As a result of the injury, the former Lille man was ruled out for three months after undergoing surgery. However, Osimhen’s time on the sidelines was reduced after a face mask was designed for him.
On Osimhen’s return, Napoli needed to get back to winning ways after an embarrassing loss to Fiorentina last week. The Partenopei faced a Bologna side that had just a win from their previous five games.
Spalletti’s men did not have the home advantage, but it was a dominant display from Napoli. They bossed the possession, although both sides had the same number of attempts at goal.
However, Napoli were more clinical as two goals from Hirving Lozano were enough to secure the vital three points.
In Osimhen’s twenty minutes on the pitch, he had eight touches and an attempt at goal, but it was a wayward one. He also won three of his four duels.
Bayern Munich and Poland striker Robert Lewandowski was named 2021 Best Fifa Men’s Player of the Year, while Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo landed the special award.
Lewandowski, 33, claimed the prize for the second consecutive year after scoring 69 goals.
He won ahead of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah and Paris St-Germain’s Lionel Messi.
Ronaldo was lauded for being the men’s international all-time top scorer.
Lewandowski broke the late Gerd Muller’s 49-year record for scoring the most Bundesliga goals in a calendar year with 43 in 34 league appearances.
Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel won the award for the Best Fifa men’s coach for guiding Chelsea to their second Champions League title after only joining the club in January.
Former Tottenham winger Erik Lamela – sold to Sevilla in the summer – won the Fifa Puskas award, which recognises the best goal in world football during the year, after his Irabonna finish in the north London derby against Arsenal last March.
Chelsea’s Edouard Mendy won the award for the Best Fifa men’s goalkeeper after a successful first season with the club, including a clean sheet in the 1-0 win over Manchester City in the Champions League final.
