Electrified Cars Hit Almost Fifth Of EU Q3 Vehicle Sales

0

Nearly one in five vehicles sold in the European Union in the third quarter was an electrified model as sales continued to soar while fossil-fuel cars slumped, according to sales data released on Friday by a trade organization.

The European Automobile Manufacturers’ Association, or ACEA, which represents major European car, truck, van and bus makers, said that battery electric and plug-in hybrid model sales across the European Union made up just under 19% of all sales.

Battery electric vehicle sales jumped nearly 57% to more than 212,000 units, while plug-in hybrid models rose nearly 43% to more than 197,000 units.

This is a slower pace of growth than in 2020 when sales almost trebled from a low base.

But it compares with a 35% drop in sales for petrol cars – which still are the biggest sellers and account for nearly 40% of overall sales – and a more than 50% drop for diesel cars during the quarter.

Less than a decade ago, diesel cars made up more than 50% of sale in the EU, but accounted for under 18% of all cars sold in the third quarter.

As well as having to meet stringent new EU carbon emissions targets, car makers and consumers have benefited from government subsidies for electric vehicles.

Study Reveals 50% Of Americans Are Bible Users

0

According to the American Bible Society’s 2021 State of the Bible study, more Americans read the Bible this year than in the past few years.

The annual study, which was released last week, revealed that 50 percent of Americans (128 million people) were Bible users – meaning that they either read, prayed, or listened to the Bible at least three to four times a year apart from an event or church service.

This year’s numbers are the second highest in a decade, behind the ABS’s 2014 study (129 million people) and tied for the third-highest percentage since the initial study in 2011.

As reported by Lifeway Research, the 2021 findings are substantially higher than last summer’s number of Bible users when 48 percent or 123 million people reported reading their Bible.

As a whole, 11 percent of Americans say they interact with the Scriptures daily, 5 percent say they do so 4 to 6 times a week, 9 percent say several times a week and another 9 percent say once a week.

Additionally, 8 percent say they read the Bible once a month, and another 8 percent say they turn to it three to four times a year.

On most days during the week, one in 6 Americans (16 percent) read the Word in 2021, up from 12 percent last year. Moreover, 8 percent engaged with the Bible once or twice a year, while 13 percent reported reading the Bible less than once a year.

According to the ABS study, there was a decline in the number of Americans who said they had never read the Bible. In 2019, 35 percent reported never having read the Word, but that dropped to 31 percent in 2020 and then to 29 percent in 2021.

Altogether, this past year saw 181 million Americans opening up their Bible, a 7.1 percent increase from 2020 (169 million).

The ABS 2021 study also revealed that evangelicals have a higher percentage of “practicing” Christians than any other mainline denomination.

National Union Of Tunisian Women Outlines Five-Year Adult Education Strategy

0

The National Union of Tunisian Women has outlined its five-year adult education strategy (2021/2026).

The development and upgrading of the union’s centres across the country and the modernisation of learning tools for enhanced skills are the backbone of this stategy.

UNFT President Radhia Jerbi urged international lenders to underpin the organisation’s efforts to modernise the adult education system, target more social groups and develop curricula in line with their needs, such as digitalisation and distance marketing.

Jerbi shed light on financing challenges in a number of regions, adding that the Union is relying significantly on funding by the German Adult Education Association, DVV, which is a key and effective partner in this area.

Regional Director North Africa at DVV Internationa,l Donia Ben Miloud, said constant support is lent to the UNFT’s adult education programme by means of providing equipment or supporting trainers.

Uganda Teachers Now To Train For Four Years

0

Uganda’s Ministry of Education says students enrolling in Uganda to train as teachers will study for four years, instead of three, effective 2021/2022 academic year.

The changes coincide with the elimination of Grade III and Grade V certificate and diploma teaching courses, respectively, in line with a 2019 Teacher Policy that Cabinet approved to standardise the teaching profession.

Under the lapsing arrangement, National Teachers Colleges (NTCs) would admit mainly eligible Senior Six leavers and award them diplomas after a two-year training in teaching while Primary Teacher Colleges or PTCs recruited students O-Level leavers who graduated with a certificate, also after two years.

Each of the years would include a three-month teaching practice, without which a student would not qualify as a professional teacher, and after which the graduate will formally be registered with Education ministry that issues the teacher a practising certificate.

However, government is converting many of the phased-out NTCs and TTCs to secondary schools and vocational training institutions, in sub-counties or districts without them, while the retained teacher colleges will train students and only award degrees of a proposed Uganda National Institute of Teacher Education (UNITE).

Described by Education officials as an equivalent of Uganda Management Institute (UMI), UNITE will be headquartered at Shimoni Primary Teachers’ College in Wakiso in an arrangement that mirrors a resurrection of the Institute of Teacher Education Kyambogo (ITEK), which government merged with related specialised educational institutions to form Kyambogo University.

Authorities: Prop Gun Fired By Actor Alec Baldwin Kills Woman On Film Set

0

U.S. actor Alec Baldwin fired a prop gun that killed a cinematographer and wounded the director on a film set in New Mexico, U.S. law enforcement officers said Thursday.

The incident happened on the set of “Rust” in the southwestern U.S. state, where Baldwin is playing the lead in a 19th-century western.

Halyna Hutchins and Joel Souza “were shot when a prop firearm was discharged by Alec Baldwin,” the sheriff in Santa Fe said in a statement.

Hutchins, 42, was transported to hospital by helicopter but died of her wounds, while Souza, 48, was taken by ambulance and is receiving treatment.

No charges have been filed over the incident, which is being investigated, with witness interviews ongoing.

A spokesperson from the production said the “accident” involved the misfire of a prop gun with blanks.

A sheriff’s spokesman told the publication that the director was in “critical condition.”

The incident took place at the Bonanza Creek Ranch, a production location near Santa Fe which is popular with Hollywood filmmakers.

Movie sets usually have stringent rules over the use of prop weapons, but accidents have happened.

Most famously, Brandon Lee, the son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee, died during filming of “The Crow” after being shot by a gun that was supposed to fire blanks.

Baldwin has been on television and in films since the 1980s.

Federal Road Safety Corps Unveils Body Cameras For Operation Monitoring

0

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has officially launched the use of body cameras for its personnel across the country.

The body cameras were unveiled on Thursday, at an event held in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Speaking at the event, Boboye Oyeyemi, FRSC corps marshal, said the operation monitoring and control platform which was also unveiled alongside the body cameras will contribute significantly to improving the agency’s operations.

“This platform will embrace the ethical imperatives of eliminating misconducts both on the part of the operatives and motorists,” he said.

“It will considerably reduce the incentive to infringe on traffic laws and regulations due to perceived weak enforcement and likelihood of escaping arrest.

“It will assist to improve on road safety management generally with better personnel disposition, among others.”

Morocco 2022 Race: Oshoala ledges better Super Falcons outing in Accra

0

Captain Asisat Oshoala has promised that the Super Falcons will put up a better show when they confront their Ghanaian counterparts at the Accra Sports Stadium on Sunday, in the second leg of their 12th Women AFCON qualifying fixture.

A brace from Sweden –based Uchenna Kanu gave Nigeria a 2-0 lead from the first leg played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena on Wednesday, but the Super Falcons realize it is not over yet against one of the fiercest rivals of Nigeria in African football. Wednesday’s game happened on the 70th year anniversary of the football rivalry between both West African giants.

“We know that the Black Queens are strong and determined when playing at home. Now, we have to up our game and play like we did not win this first leg. We have to go all out and attack better than we did here. Qualification for the AWCON is non-negotiable,” Oshoala said as the squad met with President of Nigeria Football Federation, Mr Amaju Melvin Pinnick and the General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi after Wednesday’s encounter.

A record number of 44 entries for the preliminaries means that after the fixture with Ghana, the nine-time champions still have another round to prosecute before being eligible to feature in the finals in Morocco, which will also determine Africa’s representatives at the 32-team FIFA Women’s World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand in 2023.

That next round could well be against Lady Elephants of Cote d’Ivoire, who mauled their counterparts from Niger Republic 9-0 in their own first leg encounter on Wednesday. The final round of qualifiers comes up in February next year.

The Confederation of African Football has appointed Ivorian officials to superintend Sunday’s clash in Accra between Nigeria and Ghana. Zomadre Sonia Kore will be the referee, with her compatriots Denise Akoua (assistant referee 1) and Ndeko Edwige Appia (assistant referee 2) also in action. Beatrice Gouchoedou from Benin Republic will be fourth official and Latré-Kayi Lawson-Hogban from Togo will serve as match commissioner.

Salisu Yusuf Returns As Super Eagles Assistant Coach

0

The Executive Committee of Nigeria Football Federation has approved the re-instatement of Coach Salisu Yusuf to his position as Assistant Coach of the Super Eagles and Head Coach of the Super Eagles B team, with effect from 1st November 2021.

General Secretary of the NFF, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, disclosed on Thursday that the re-instatement of the former Kano Pillars, Enyimba FC and Rangers International FC gaffer by the NFF Board was on the recommendation of the NFF Technical Department.

Highly respected for his match –reading ability, calm demeanour and proficiency in talent discovery and development, Yusuf, in his playing days featured for Rancher Bees of Kaduna and El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri, among others.

Yusuf’s return to the three-time African champions coincides with the closing stages of the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 qualifying second round phase and the commencement of preparations for the 33rd Africa Cup of Nations finals taking place in Cameroon early next year.

The Eagles qualified for the 2019 AFCON and featured at the 2018 World Cup with Yusuf as Rohr’s assistant.

Many believed that the Eagles were more compact and played as a team with Yusuf by the sidelines.

The former midfielder also led the home-based Eagles to play in the final of the 2017 CHAN in Morocco.

However, the former Kano Pillars coach was banned after he was seen
in a video receiving cashh from undercover journalists posing as agents.

He has since served out his ban and seconded by the NFF as coach of Enugu Rangers after his contract with the Federation ran out.

Meanwhile, his employers have stood by him and insisted he is the best man to help Rohr get the Super Eagles through to the World Cup in Qatar.

According to ScoreNigeria, the main stumbling block to his return has been a top official, who was behind the appointment of former Super Eagles captain Joseph Yobo as Rohr’s new assistant.

However, an official informed that the top official has since given his approval for Salisu’s return.

Yobo was not part of the Eagles for the recent friendlies against Cameroon in Austria and his name was not even mentioned as regards the team of NPFL stars who will fly the country’s flag against Mexico on Saturday in Los Angeles.

A source said he did not enjoy a great working relationship with his boss Rohr, who also insisted Yobo do his coaching badges.
