0

The Federal Government has condemned the claim by former Pro-chancellor and Chairman of Council, University of Lagos (UNILAG), Dr. Wale Babalakin, that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, was indicted by the Presidential Visitation panel to the institution.

In a statement by the Federal Ministry of Education, the government described Babalakin’s claim as false and has no bearing with the report submitted by the General Martin Luther Agwai (rtd) panel.

The statement, signed by Director, Press and Public Relations, Ben Bem Goong, said government was in the process of setting up white paper committees to address all the findings and recommendations of the panels set up to investigate federal universities, including UNILAG, in a holistic manner.

Goong disclosed that government had earlier issued a white paper on the report of the 2020 special presidential visitation panel to the institution, which culminated in the dissolution of the Babalakin-led council and Ogundipe’s reinstatement.

While urging stakeholders to ignore the claim, Goong said the government would soon release its white paper on the panel’s reports.

Meanwhile, Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Sonny Echono, yesterday in Abuja, during the inspection of the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) in some schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), recalled that the seven-man visitation panel to UNILAG submitted its report along with others to the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu, on August 31, 2021, and not September 7, 2021, as claimed in the publications.

He said: “Government is in the process of setting up white paper committees to address the findings and recommendations of the panels, including that of UNILAG, in a holistic manner.

The email addresses of hundreds of Afghan interpreters who worked with British forces, including some who are hiding from the Taliban in the war-torn country, have been shared in a data breach by the British Ministry of Defence.

The United Kingdom’s government has launched an investigation into the breach, which saw more than 250 people copied into an email by the Ministry of Defence pledging assistance with their relocation to the UK, making their details visible to all recipients, the UK broadcaster reported on Tuesday.

One interpreter contacted by the ministry told the broadcaster the mistake “could cost the life of interpreters, especially for those who are still in Afghanistan”.

“Some of the interpreters didn’t notice the mistake and they replied to all the emails already and they explained their situation which is very dangerous,” the interpreter said.

Some of the addresses showed individuals’ names and associated profile pictures.

The ministry’s email reportedly told the interpreters it was doing everything it could to help them reach the UK, but warned they should not risk leaving their current location if it was unsafe to do so.

The department reportedly sent another message 30 minutes later advising the recipients to change their email addresses following the error.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has faulted claims from certain quarters for the resignation of the CBN Governor over issues relating to the exchange rate of the naira.

In a statement seen on Tuesday, Osita Nwanisobi, CBN’s spokesman, alleged that those behind such calls were only pursuing their selfish agenda fueled by those who had long benefitted from rent-seeking practices in the parallel forex market, which he refused to recognize as a significant segment of the country’s forex market.

According to him, the CBN would not be distracted in its mandate by yielding to the selfish tendencies of a few to the detriment of the majority.

He, therefore, urged the banking public to disregard claims aimed at impugning the reputation of the Bank, insisting that the Bank remained committed to carrying out its mandate for the good of the Nigerian people.

High electricity costs overwhelm South South, South East businesses

With an average of about N70 billion spent on alternative energy, yearly, by local manufacturers due to poor power supply, many industrial firms and businesses in Southeast and South-south are struggling to sustain their operations, with many already suspending production, a survey by The Guardian has revealed.

According to the operators, the high cost of electricity is taking a toll on their businesses, as manufacturers allege that distribution companies and their cohorts are frustrating the eligible customer initiative.

Similarly, efforts to shift to gas consumption as an alternative source to automotive gas oil (AGO), otherwise known as diesel, have resulted in higher costs of equipment migration and inadequate infrastructure to transport gas to factories.

With operating costs already near 80 per cent in some instances, the pass-on effect is already being felt by consumers in the form of a hike in the price of goods and essential commodities.
