Group insists Shell must clean up Niger Delta

0

Against the backdrop of Shell Petroleum Development Company’s (SPDC) plan to divest from the country’s oil and gas sector, the Environmental Rights Action/Friends of the Earth Nigeria (ERA/FoEN) has called on the Federal Government to halt the multi-national oil company’s attempt to run away from its mess without proper clean-up of the Niger Delta.

The foremost environmental group, in a statement made available to newsmen in Benin City, alleged that Shell’s plan to sell its land-based, shallow offshore oil fields and infrastructure in the Niger Delta region was a plot not to clean up the Niger Delta.

The statement signed by the director of programmes, Mike Karipo also called on the Nigerian government to protect local communities’ interest within the divestment process of oil and gas multinational companies operating in the region.

Karipo alleged that it was the characteristic nature of the firm, having almost drained the region dry of oil and gas resources and engaged in ecocide because of its reckless operations in the region now seeks to walk away with billions of dollars in its kitty.

Nigeria hunts for CEO to lead its $2.5bn corporation

0

Nigeria is on the hunt for a chief executive officer to lead its multimillion-dollar firm, Infrastructure Corporation of Nigeria Limited (InfraCorp).

InfraCorp is a dedicated privately-managed infrastructure vehicle established and co-owned by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Africa Finance Corporation (AFC) and Nigerian Sovereign Investment Authority (NSIA) jointly referred to as “the promoters” by appointed infrastructure asset managers.

The promoters have committed a seed capital of $2.5 billion, but there are also plans to raise up to $35 billion over time.

There is no gainsaying the role infrastructural development plays in enhancing economic growth, improving living standards, reducing poverty, and contributing to environmental sustainability.

However, Nigeria has struggled for decades to close the wide infrastructural gap which has been a major impediment to its economic growth.

A reduction in the country’s infrastructure gap will not only boost economic growth, but will also give the country a competitive advantage under the African Free Trade Continental Area (AfCFTA) agreement, according to experts insight.

But Africa’s most populous nation requires at least $3 trillion over 30 years to close its infrastructure deficit, Moody’s Investors Service said in a November report.

Last year, President Muhammadu Buhari cleared the way for the launch of the infrastructure company with the vice president Yemi Osinbajo, heading a committee charged with getting the company started, while central bank Governor Godwin Emefiele chaired InfraCorp

Sudan unanimously endorses bill on joining ICC

Sudan’s transitional cabinet has unanimously approved a bill that would pave way for it to join the International Criminal Court (ICC), Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok tweeted on Tuesday. The draft has been approved in preparation for a joint meeting between the governing Sovereign Council and the cabinet to pass it into law.

“Justice and accountability are the backbone of the new Sudan, which is committed to the rule of law that we all seek to build,” Mr Hamdok said. The development moves Sudan closer to handing over to the ICC suspects wanted for war crimes and genocide in the western Darfur region, including former president Omaral-Bashir.

In May, the ICC concluded a confirmation of charges hearing in the case of Ali Kushayb, who is accused of committing war crimes and crimes against humanity in Darfur between 2003 and 2004.Since August 2019, Sudan has been led by a transitional civilian-led administration, which has vowed to deliver justice to victims of crimes committed in Darfur during Bashir’s rule Zimbabwe parks deny plan to export elephants

Kenya’s Korir, Uganda’s Chemutai win gold in heated races

0

Emmanuel Korir won gold and led a Kenyan one-two finish in the 800 meters at the Olympics.

Korir pushed his way past Australia’s Peter Bol on the last turn and surged home to win in 1 minute, 45.06 seconds. It was Kenya’s fourth straight victory in the 800 at the Olympics.

Teammate Ferguson Rotich took silver with a late kick to overtake Poland’s Patryk Dobek, who held on for bronze ahead of Bol.

Kenya has claimed this title at every Olympics since Beijing 2008.

World-record holder David Rudisha won the last two Olympic gold medals in the 800 but he didn’t make Kenya’s team this year because of long-term injury problems. Clayton Murphy of the United States, the bronze medalist in 2016, finished last.

Meanwhile, Peruth Chemutai of Uganda made her move on the last lap and pulled away for the win in the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase final at the Tokyo Games.

Chemutai set a new national record with her time of 9 minutes, 1.45 seconds. American Courtney Frerichs took off from the pack with around 2 1/2 laps to go. She was chased down by Chemutai but held on down the stretch for silver. Hyvin Kiyeng of Kenya was third.

Emma Coburn of the United States was disqualified for what was listed as a lane infringement after finishing behind the field. She earned bronze at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games.

The 22-year-old Chemutai finished fifth at the 2019 world championships in Doha.

Frerichs was a silver medalist at the 2017 world championships in London.

Former SA President Jacob Zuma to be allowed out of prison for trial

0

Former South African President Jacob Zuma will be allowed out of the prison to appear in person before the commission of inquiry on state capture.

Zuma is expected to appear before a Pietermaritzburg court next week Tuesday.

In a court order dated 4 August, Koen said the hearing will be conducted “in open court at the High Court in Pietermaritzburg”.

Zuma’s lawyers have been adamant fighting for him to appear in court claiming it was a violation to virtually appear for the hearing.

“To do so would be unconstitutional and illegal, irrespective of the situation in a particular case, a particular date or the particular circumstance which may or may not prevail on 9 August 2021,” his lawyer said in a short two-page submission to the court.

The judge later turned the earlier ruling that the inquiry could be done virtually since no evidence was to be presented.

South Sudan’s VP Machar deposed by party: rival leaders

0

Machar, a pivotal figure in South Sudan’s bloody road to independence and subsequent civil war, was deposed following a three-day gathering of senior SPLM/A-IO leaders in the country’s far north, the party’s military wing said.

Its chief of staff, First Lieutenant General Simon Gatwech Dual, was declared interim leader of the opposition movement that governs the troubled country in a shaky alliance with former enemies.

It is unclear what the putsch means for Machar, a wily leader who survived years of bush warfare, close attempts on his life and stretches in exile.

The military wing said Machar had “completely failed” to show leadership and greatly weakened the party’s position in the post-war coalition government formed between the warring sides in early 2020.

Machar had engaged in a years-long “policy of divide and rule” and favoured nepotism over unity or advancing their cause, according to a statement signed by the SPLM/A-IO military leadership and dated August 3.

Regularisation of Property, Documentation Reviewed Upward By Lagos State

0

Lagos State government has surreptitiously increased fees charged for property/land regularisation and other documentation from 25 per cent of the fair market value of such property to over 100 per cent in some cases.

The National President of the Nigerian Institute of Building, Bldr. Kunle Awobodu has appealed to the Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu to be more considerate in the imposition of these charges/fees/rates so as not to stifle the real estate market.

“The Lagos State government is trying to increase their internally generated revenue (IGR). They should understand that the post-COVID economy is in quagmire, not buoyant. So, this is not the time to double taxes or charges, I mean not the time to increase those fees astronomically.

This, he said was because people were just trying to recover from losses created by COVID-19 and #EndSars protests. There is property glut right now, because of weak purchasing power of most people.”

He said not many people are developing buildings right now and that the few that are doing so should be encouraged. “The astronomical increase of these charges will affect the real estate market adversely.

“So, we appeal to the governor to allow the economy to stabilise and the charges should be minimal. We understand that the government needs a strong IGR to provide social amenities, but they should be guided by the poor economy,” he said.

There is demand for the buildings being constructed but people cannot purchase them for lack of funds and developers would be unable to pay back loans to lenders if they are unable to sell, he said.

Meanwhile, there is no uproar yet unlike when it increased the Land Use Charge, because it targets a small group of people who must do the mandatory property regularisation/documentation, according to investors, who said they purchased land in Ikoyi, Victoria Island, Lekki and elsewhere that they needed to document.
