Tunisia’s Ennahda Puts Off Party Meeting Amid Crisis

0

The head of Tunisia’s biggest party, the moderate Islamist Ennahda, on Saturday postponed a meeting of its highest council after senior members called for his resignation over his handling of the political crisis.

The moves have caused the biggest crisis in Tunisian politics since the 2011 revolution that introduced democracy, with no announcement by Saied of a new prime minister or roadmap to end the emergency period.

Saied’s moves, which also included freezing parliament and dismissing the prime minister, have also thrown Ennahda into turmoil, leading to recriminations within the party over its strategy and leadership.

The party has been the most consistently powerful in Tunisia since the revolution, playing a role in backing successive coalition governments and has lost support as the economy stagnated and public services declined.

On Saturday Ghannouchi postponed a meeting of its Choura Council, the party’s highest internal authority, shortly before it was due to take place, three party sources said.

Dozens of younger party members and some of its leaders including Samir Dilou, a parliament member, had called on Ghannouchi to resign, the sources said.

Ghannouchi has led Ennahda for decades, including from exile in Britain before the revolution, after which he returned to a tumultuous welcome at Tunis airport. He stood for election for the first time in 2019, winning a parliament seat and becoming speaker.

Thousands Protest Against COVID-19 Health Pass In France

0

Thousands of people have protested in Paris and other French cities on Saturday against a mandatory coronavirus health pass for entry to a wide array of public venues, introduced by the government.

It was the third weekend in a row that people opposed to President Emmanuel Macron’s new COVID-19 measures have taken to the streets, in an unusual show of determination.

Visitors going to museums, cinemas or swimming pools are already denied entry if they cannot produce the health pass showing they have been vaccinated against COVID-19 or have had a recent negative test.

Parliament approved a new law this week that will make vaccinations mandatory for health workers and extend the health pass requirement to bars, restaurants, trade shows, trains and hospitals.

The number of demonstrators has grown steadily since the start of the protests, echoing the “yellow vest” movement that started in late 2018 against fuel taxes and the cost of living.

Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin said on Twitter that 19 demonstrators were arrested, including 10 in Paris while a police spokesperson said Protesters injured three police officers in Paris.

An interior ministry official said 204,090 had demonstrated across France, including 14,250 in Paris alone. This is about 40,000 more than last week.

Protesters were also out in other cities like Marseille, Lyon, Montpelier, Nantes and Toulouse, shouting “Freedom!” and “No to the health pass!.”

About 3,000 police officers were deployed in the capital, with anti-riot officers striving to keep demonstrators on authorized routes.

Authorities sought to avoid a repeat of events last week, when scuffles between police and demonstrators broke out on the Champs-Elysees.

Turkey’s Coast Guard Helps Evacuate Tourists Amid Wildfires

Panicked tourists in Turkey hurried to the seashore to wait for rescue boats Saturday after being told to evacuate some hotels in the Aegean resort of Bodrum.

Coast guard units were leading the operation and authorities asked private boats and yachts to assist in evacuation efforts from the sea as new wildfires erupted.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan visited the area Saturday, inspecting the damage from a helicopter.

Speaking from the town of Manavgat, Erdogan announced that the Turkish government would cover the rents for people affected by the fire and rebuild their homes.

He said taxes, social security and credit payments would be postponed for those affected and small businesses would be offered credit with zero interest.

Turkeys Health Minister said the death toll from wildfires raging in Turkey’s Mediterranean towns rose to six Saturday after two forest workers were killed.

Fires across Turkey since Wednesday have burned down forests and some settlements, encroaching on villages and tourist destinations and forcing people to evacuate.

The minister of agriculture and forestry, Bekir Pakdemirli, said Saturday that 88 of the 98 fires that broke out amid strong winds and scorching heat have been brought under control.

Neighborhoods affected by the fire in five provinces were declared disaster zones by Turkey’s emergency and disaster authority.

UN Says Six Civilians Killed In Rebel Attack On C.Africa Village

The UN peacekeeping mission says Rebels have killed six civilians and wounded several others Saturday in an attack on a village in the northeast of the volatile Central African Republic.

A spokesman for the UN’s 12,000-strong MINUSCA mission said at dawn elements from the 3R (Return, Reclamation, Rehabilitation) launched a large-scale attack against C.African army positions in the village of Mann.

He said that Six civilians were killed and several wounded but added that the situation is under control and patrols are under way.

The 3R, a rebel group composed of members from the Funali ethnic group, is one of several such outfits flourishing in the violence-wracked country.

CAR is the second least-developed country in the world according to the UN and is still suffering from the aftermath of a brutal civil conflict that erupted in 2013.

It has been wracked by coups and decades of misrule by dictators since its 1960 independence from France.

President Faustin Archange Touadera was re-elected in December on a turnout of fewer than one in three voters.

The ballot was hampered by armed groups — including the 3R — that at the time controlled around two-thirds of the country, and rebels mounted an offensive in the runup to polling day.

Since then, the army, backed by UN peacekeepers, Rwandan special forces and Russian paramilitaries, has wrested much of the territory from rebel control.

Nigeria Files Fresh Charges Against Shiite Leader El-Zakzaky

New charges have been filed by government authorities against the acquitted leader of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), Sheikh Ibraheem Yakubu El-Zakzaky and his wife Zeehah.

The charges come barely two days after a Kaduna High Court discharged and acquitted the shiite leader.

According to the prosecution the new charges would border on terrorism and treasonable felony.

Dari Bayero, the Kaduna state director of public prosecution, said they were not in agreement with the reasoning and conclusion of the High Court.

While affirming that the Kaduna State Government would go further with the Zakzaky’s case, Dari stressed that the court judgment is not in consonance with the facts on the ground.

The prosecution added that some of the actions of the Shiite leader upon which he is being charged with fresh allegations predated 2015.

El-Zakzaky and his wife, who was also arrested in 2015, had been facing a range of charges filed by the state government in 2018, including aiding and abetting homicide, unlawful assembly and disruption of public peace.

His continued detention had led to street protests in the Abuja, Nigeria’s capital, sparking violent clashes with security forces that have killed dozens of lives.

The Nigerian government officially outlawed the shiite group in 2019.

According to him, testing now based on request because people have not been coming for it, “We are supposed to have been doing community testing but we are no longer doing it.

“The Nigerian Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) gave us support on the laboratory aspect, but unfortunately, people do not want to do the testing and there are no cases.

Rilwan also lamented that bank officials in the state refused to be vaccinated.

Bank officials, except the Central Bank of Nigeria, refused to receive the vaccination. Almost all the people in banks refused to take the vaccination and that is a big problem.

50,000 Receives Hepatitis Vaccine in Calabar

0

The Ministry of Health has embarked on the vaccination of 50,000 people against hepatitis in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State, South-south Nigeria.

The Commissioner for Health in Cross River State, Dr. Betta Edu, while flagging-off the vaccination exercise in Akamkpa council area, said that the government with the support of a non-governmental agency plans to vaccinate 50,000 people against hepatitis.

Edu stated that the vaccination was to reduce the prevalence rate of hepatitis B and C in Cross River.

“The prevalence of Hepatitis B and C are 8.8% and 1.1% respectively in Cross River. Over 16.2 million people in Nigeria are living with Hepatitis B and 2.2 million with Hepatitis C viruses”, she said.

Free Screening

According to Edu, most of those infected are unaware of their status and that informed the commencement of the screening and vaccination of citizens against the viruses since Monday.

“Our intention is to completely eliminate the hepatitis viruses through vaccinations. So, we are conducting free screening across the Calabar metropolis and in Akamkpa. While the vaccination of the rural people is free, those in the state capital pay a token of one thousand naira for the vaccines.

“I am satisfied with the turnout of people for the screening and vaccination especially around major motor parks and markets in Calabar. We are sure that we will reach these numbers of persons with the vaccines,” the Commissioner stated.

Contact tracing

Edu explained that the ministry would compile the contact of those vaccinated in the first phase so as to enable them access the second and third phases of vaccination for complete immunity against the virus.

She said “the hepatitis vaccines are to be given in three phases. All those taking this first dose would be contacted for the second and third doses in an interval of one month so that they get absolute immunity. We are committed to ensure that these ones complete their vaccines.”

Transmission

On the way the hepatitis virus is contacted, Edu said “Hepatitis can be spread through contact with body fluids, unprotected sex, sharing sharp objects and sometimes communal sharing of toothbrushes. We must discourage sharing of toothbrushes in households or amongst friends because that is one major ways members of a particular household can infect one another with the virus.”

She urged health workers, traditional, religious and youth leaders as well as the media to collaborate with the ministry to sensitize the people on the hepatitis viruses and need to protect themselves and their loved ones through immunity provided by the vaccines.

Supervising the vaccination of people at the Etim Edem motor park in Calabar, the State Focal Person for Hepatitis, Ekaette Obase said that the weeklong vaccination started with a thanksgiving service and screening and vaccination of church members on Sunday.

She urged the people to avail themselves of these vaccines and be protected, noting “mothers can transmit the virus to unborn children and it is easy for the virus to be spread through deep kissing, even sweat on the body of an infected person touching on another can get that person infected.”

Symptoms

Obase said “some of the symptoms a person with hepatitis has include very high fever, yellow coloured eyes, and dark urine. The stool will be changed, liver also affected and the person would have an extended abdomen including swollen legs. It is a very dangerous infection. So, I am encouraging everyone to come out to know their status by getting tested and if you are negative, there is vaccine for you because prevention is better than cure.”

“The best way to prevent hepatitis is through vaccination; it is the excellent way of prevention. The vaccination is in three doses and it is a cover for life. Within three months a person would have this cover for life,” she added
