Excavations Reveal Remains of Fortified Wall From Biblical First Temple Period

0

Archaeologists were left on the verge of tears when excavations in the ancient city of Jerusalem exposed the remains of a fortified wall from the biblical First Temple period.

The First Temple period (1200 to 586 BC) describes one of the most thrilling but enigmatic periods in the Holy Land’s history. Although the Bible paints a vivid picture of life in Jerusalem during the time of the First Temple – Solomon’s Temple – very little archaeological evidence has survived of this holy structure.

According to the biblical account, the temple was toppled in 586 BC after an army of Babylonians led by King Nebuchadnezzar laid siege to Jerusalem.

The invading forces razed the city to the ground, plundered its riches and drove many of its people into exile or captivity.

A passage in the Bible’s 2 Kings 25:9 reads: “He burned the house of the LORD, the kings’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem; even every great house he burned with fire.”

And yet, recent excavations in the City of David have unearthed fortifications and artefacts with tantalising links to this biblical period.

The City of David encompasses parts of a Palestinian and Israeli village, believed to be the oldest parts of Jerusalem dating to the Iron Age.

Archaeologists in the City of David National Park have uncovered a missing fragment of Jerusalem’s eastern wall, which was destroyed by the Babylonian invaders.

The wall’s remains were found near the Temple Mount, the contested centre of spiritual life in Jerusalem.

Measuring just 16ft (5m) across, the wall was one of many discoveries made on the site, including ancient artefacts and ruins of homes.

Most importantly, however, the discovery proves the ancient city of Jerusalem was surrounded by an impressive, fortified wall.

Fragments of the fortifications have been found in the 1960s and 1970s but they were disconnected and assumed to be part of separate structures.

Upon figuring out the significance of the discovery, one of the archaeologists was overcome with emotion.

Dr Filip Vukosavovic of the Ancient Jerusalem Research Center, who coordinated the dig, was quoted by Jerusalem Post, saying: “When we exposed the first part of the wall, an area about one metre per one metre large, I immediately understood what we had found. I almost cried.”

According to the Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA), the fortification protected the ancient city during “the time of the kings of Judah” until the city was toppled 2,600 years ago.

The IAA announced in a Facebook post: “The excavations uncovered remains of the destruction, however, not all was destroyed and parts of the walls were found still standing.

“The new exposure connects two previously excavated sections on the eastern slope.

“Remains of the destruction were also found in the building next to the wall and inside the rows of storage, jars were discovered that were broken when the building burned and collapsed.”

Archaeologists have dated the jars to the final days of the Kingdom of Judah – the Iron Age kingdom that ruled over the Southern Levant after the unified Kingdom of Israel broke apart.

Even more intriguingly, the jars’ handles were stamped with characteristic rosette-shaped impressions.

Near the uncovered wall, the archaeologists also unearthed a Babylonian stone seal depicting a figure standing before the Babylonian deities Marduk and Nabu.

The excavations also revealed a clay seal – bulla – bearing the name “Tsafan”.

The discoveries are being prepared for exhibition later this year.

The IAA said: “These exciting findings will be presented this October at the Israel Antiquities Authority’s annual conference ‘New Studies in the Archaeology of Jerusalem and its Region’.”

Muslims Leader Ahmad Amadi Denounces Islam, Converts to Christianity

The leader of the Muslims against Terror Organization (MATO) from Nigeria, Africa, and to the rest of the world, Dr. Ahmad Amadi has denounced Islam and converted to Christianity.

China Bars For-Profit Tutoring In Core School Subjects

China is barring tutoring for profit in core school subjects to ease financial pressures on families that have contributed to low birth rates.

The news sent shockwaves through its vast private education sector and saw share prices plunging.

The policy change, which also restricts foreign investment in a sector that had become essential to success in Chinese school exams, was contained in a government document widely circulated on Friday and verified by sources.

The move threatens to decimate China’s US$120 billion private tutoring industry and triggered a heavy selloff in shares of tutoring firms traded in Hong Kong and New York including New Oriental Education & Technology and Koolearn Technology Holding.

All institutions offering tutoring on the school curriculum will be registered as non-profit organisations, and no new licences will be granted, according to the document, which says it was distributed by China’s State Council, or cabinet, to local governments and is dated Jul 19.

According to the most recent figures from the Chinese Society of Education, more than 75 per cent of students aged from around 6 to 18 in China attended after-school tutoring classes in 2016 and anecdotal evidence suggests that percentage has risen.

China International Capital said the rules are “tougher than market expectations, and we expect material impact on future business and capital market activities.”

The pressure for children to succeed in an increasingly competitive society has given rise to the term Jiwa, or “chicken baby”, which refers to children pumped with extracurricular classes and energy-boosting “chicken blood” by anxious parents.

Texas Public Schools: Republicans Push To Expand Restrictions On Racism Education

State senators in Texas are considering legislation that would expand recently passed restrictions on social studies courses in public grade schools, despite concerns from educators and the absence of most Texas House Democrats that has brought lawmaking in that chamber to a halt.

It is the latest GOP push to restrict the teaching of critical race theory, a framework used to examine racism in colleges and universities that has become a Republican catch-all term for what some see as divisive efforts to address racism and inequity in schools.

During the regular legislative session that ended in May, Republicans rallied to pass House Bill 3979, which limits how teachers can discuss race and current events in social studies courses and bars them from awarding students course credit for social or political advocacy work.

The new law, slated to go into effect in September, says teachers may not be compelled to discuss current events or controversial topics of public policy.

If they do discuss such a topic, they must explore it from “diverse and contending perspectives without giving deference to any one perspective.”

Governor Greg Abbott called lawmakers back to the Capitol on July 8 to work on Republican priorities left pending after House Democrats’ walkout at the end of the regular session.

As part of the special session agenda, Abbott asked lawmakers to continue the work started in HB 3979.

The Senate gave final approval to Senate Bill 3, a broad measure expanding HB 3979’s restrictions to any subject in grades K-12, including ethnic studies courses.

It was passed on an 18-4 vote, with nine Democrats absent while in Washington, D.C., to join House Democrats in a protest over GOP voting bills. The House, however, cannot accept SB 3 due to a lack of quorum in the lower chamber.

Kenya Government Slashes Fees In Public Schools

The government of Kenya recently announced a fee reduction in public secondary schools, offering a major reprieve to parents struggling to make ends meet as a result of the harsh economic times occasioned by the COVID-19 debacle.

Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha said the fees in national schools will go down by Sh8,500 from next week when schools re-open.

Speaking during the launch of the 2021 Elimu Secondary Scholarship Programme, Magoha directed Extra-County and County schools to charge Sh5,500 less in school fees.

He pointed out that the decision was due to the short nature of the current school calendar and stressed the need for all institutions to adhere to the guidelines.

Following the directive, students in secondary schools will pay Sh45,054 while learners in Extra County and County Schools will pay Sh39,554.

9,000 beneficiaries who sat for the 2020 KCPE examination will benefit from the Elimu Secondary Scholarship progamme.

The scholarship will target students who hail from humble backgrounds who had scored above 280 marks.

Equity Group Foundation will be the key partner in the design and support of the program.

Plank, a great exercise for the body

Ancient Indian scriptures mention that our physical movements need to be coordinated to connect our body to the mind and soul so that with each step, our Being aligns with the Universe. In modern day routines, this can be understood as having a well-balanced body and mind.

An important exercise is the Plank pose- a simple, isometric exercise which engages major muscle groups of the body in a single pose. This one exercise can work wonders, literally, from head to toe and help build strength and stability in the body- 60 seconds at a time.

What is a Plank Simply put, the plank is a 2- step position:

Getting into the Plank pose:

Lie on your stomach and gently lift your torso on your elbows and toes while keeping your back straight. Your body should be in a straight line from neck to heels. Do not exert force to move up or down but simply hold the pose by tightening your core muscles.

Now comes the hard part!

(ii) Hold the Plank pose:

Once you are in plank, engage and hold as follows:

Squeeze your belly button (abdominal muscles) towards your spine while keeping your back straight.

Then squeeze your thigh muscles (quadriceps) and buttocks (gluteal muscles) as much as possible.

Pull back your shoulders from your ears, keep your neck straight and breathe.

Hold this position for 60 seconds. For beginners, start with a few seconds and gradually progress to 60 seconds. Switch from elbow to forearm plank in order to hold the pose for longer. You will definitely feel a burn in your muscles and some shaking or quivering in the body. That just means you are burning calories!

Why should I do the Plank pose?

Exercise is not always fun. Even a 10 minute workout can seem daunting to many of us leading sedentary lifestyles requiring habits like sitting slumped in a chair for hours at end, even when we work from home. We always think about working towards a healthier routine with a regular exercise schedule but somehow, it never happens because of lack of time, resources, motivation or all of them clubbed together!

You can literally do a Plank anywhere!  It can be the bedroom floor or out in the sun in our balcony or garden (AVOID BATHROOMS- Caution! Wet, Slippery Floor! ). A 60 second Plank done a couple of times a day can give you a great core exercise. Add some basic stretches to have body movement restored even when you don’t move around a lot.

The Plank pose is a Bodyweight exercise, i.e. you only use your own weight to enhance your bio motor skills like endurance, speed, flexibility and balance. There is no need for equipment of any kind and people of all ages, who are capable, can get into a plank as part of their exercise. You can use the Plank like a starting point of a marathon and gradually incorporate more exercise in order to build your own, personalized exercise routine.

What are the benefits of a Plank Pose

A strong core is much more than six-pack abs. We use our core muscles unconsciously for several actions in a day ranging from bending and lifting weight, for balance and even to managing our breathing. A weakened core can cause serious injury if ignored. The plank position helps target the core muscles and give them a good burn to build muscle strength.

The core muscles groups engaged in a plank are the following:

Transverse abdominis:

These are abdominal wall muscles responsible for stabilising the lumbar spine and pelvis before movement of limbs (raising your arms, bending forwards etc.). Building this muscle increases our strength to lift heavy weights.

Rectus abdominis:

This is the muscle which gives you your six packs! Working this long strap muscle can help improve high jumps and kicks.

Oblique Muscles:

These muscles make side bending, waist twisting and turning possible.

Gluteal Muscles or Glutes:

This is the strongest muscle of the body and is responsible for the movement of hip and thigh. It is connected to the tailbone and maintains the shape of your back and buttocks.

Holding a plank position can fire up all these muscle groups simultaneously giving you the following benefits

1.     A Healthy Posture

A bad posture is when we slouch and have slumped shoulders. This happens because of poor alignment and sitting for long durations.

A good posture is one where the weight of the body is distributed evenly. It reduces the stress on our spine and gives us a straight, well aligned body while walking, standing and sitting.

The plank position engages all muscles from your neck, shoulder and back up to your pelvis, thighs and legs. Gradually, this results in a strong posture giving you the confidence to walk tall and proper!

2.     Balance and Coordination

Our core muscles are responsible for helping us balance while riding a bike or standing on one leg. Even dancing requires engaging the core muscles to achieve the right balance in form. Planks hold the core muscles taut thus teaching your muscle to endure. This builds muscle stability and increases body balance.

3.     Improves Body Alignment and Helps Avoid Illness

Many of us, even at a young age, experience back pain and lower back issues. This is due to bad posture and bad alignment of the body. Regular planks can help improve posture and rid you of back pain.

This is because planks help build strong abdominal muscles which reduce the strain on your back, shoulders and neck. Planking down after a long day of sitting on your computer can help relieve neck and shoulder knots too and help your body come into alignment. Planks and regular exercise can prevent degenerative muscle atrophy caused by osteoarthritis too.

4.     Build Core Strength

If you’ve read this far, you have realized that our core muscles do more than look pretty! Plank and its variations like a side plank, reverse plank, resistance planks etc. can help build strength and endurance.

However, only doing planks can become monotonous and you may quit soon. Thus, your ‘planking’ needs to be regular in the build-up towards a routine consisting of multiple exercises like cardio, weight training etc.  In order to give your body a comprehensive workout instead of a core burn out !

5.     Improves Flexibility

Are headstands, handstands or forearm stands your dream, Start planking to reach your goal!

In Yoga, the plank position and the side plank are essential poses for flexibility and core strength. They help improve flexibility in hips and thighs when combined with other poses. Abdominal muscles are essential for performing a headstand or a handstand and planks lead the way!

6.     Improves Metabolism

When we sit and work for long hours or are not physically active in our life, our metabolism tends to slow down. Doing the plank position regularly improves circulation, thus improving body metabolism. The stronger your muscles grow, the more your food intake will increase. However, if you keep exercising regularly and eat a healthy diet, the combination will make your metabolic rate go up and you will burn more calories, which results in fat loss. Regular planking can improve your metabolism and you will burn calories, even in your sleep!

7.     Improves Overall Mental Health

Any and all exercises release endorphins which help elevate our mood. However, planks can be special mood lifters because it engages the stress corners of our body. Our shoulders, neck and back usually tense up and have knots because of strain and stress, both mental and physiological. Contracting these muscles literally squeezes the tension out from major muscles where the stress accumulates.

Plank pose is a wholesome pose to charge up or relax the body, pre or post workout, respectively. It is a simple solution and can be a great start to health and wellness. Protect yourself from unfortunate events by buy health insurance policy.

Eggs, excellent choice as Breakfast

Eggs have been a dietary staple since time immemorial and there’s good reason for their continued presence in our menus and meals. Not only do they offer culinary variety — hard-boiled eggs, omelets, deviled eggs and they are also a great source of protein, calcium and several vitamins and nutrients. Here are some of the benefits of incorporating eggs into your diet.

1. it’s a nutritious treat

Though relatively small in size, eggs pack a lot of nutrition and can be an important staple in a well-balanced diet.

One large boiled egg has about 77 calories and contains: Vitamins A, B5, B12, D, E, K, B6, Folate, Phosphorus, Selenium, Calcium, Zinc, Six grams of protein and Five grams of healthy fats

“Eggs are a good source of protein (both whites/yolk). They also contain heart-healthy unsaturated fats and are a great source of important nutrients, such as vitamin B6, B12 and vitamin D,” says Kurt Hong, MD, an internal medicine specialist at Keck Medicine of USC.

2. Eggs raise good cholesterol

Eating eggs leads to elevated levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL), also known as the “good”

Cholesterol. People who have higher HDL levels have a lower risk of heart disease, stroke and other health issues. According to one study, eating two eggs a day for six weeks increased HDL levels by 10%.

3. Get some choline

Choline is a water-soluble vitamin that is often grouped with the B vitamins. It’s used to build cell membranes and helps produce signaling molecules in the brain. One hard-boiled egg has about 147mg of choline, which is 27% of the daily value recommended by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

4. Eggs help maintain your eyesight

As we get older, we need to take better care of our eyes. Egg yolks contain large amounts of lutein and zeaxanthin; helpful antioxidants that help reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration in the eyes. Eggs are also high in vitamin A, which is beneficial for eye health.

5. Some eggs are better for you

Omega-3 helps reduce triglycerides, which are a type of lipid fat in the blood. That’s why eating Omega-3 enriched eggs may be an option, particularly if you don’t enjoy other foods (fish, nuts, seeds) that are naturally rich in Omega-3. (If your triglyceride level is below 150, you’re doing well; 150-199 is borderline high; 200-499 is high; and 500 and above is considered very high.)

6. Get enough proteins and amino acids

Getting enough protein in our diets is an important way of helping our body’s health. Each egg contains about six grams of protein, as well as helpful amino acids. Getting our share of protein for the day can help with weight management, increase muscle mass, lower blood pleasure and help our bones, as well.

7. They’re not bad for the heart

Despite what was believed in previous decades, there is no direct link between egg consumption and heart disease or stroke. But some studies show that people with diabetes who eat eggs increase their chance of heart disease. People who follow a low-carbohydrate diet and eat eggs have less of a chance of developing heart disease, some studies suggest.

8. it’s a filling meal

You might have noticed that eating eggs for breakfast may keep you feeling fuller for longer — that’s generally attributed to the high protein content in eggs. Whether you have an omelette for breakfast or a hard-boiled egg as a snack, eggs can help you stay satisfied after or between meals.

Nigeria school kidnappers abduct man delivering ransom

0

Kidnappers in Nigeria have seized a man who was sent to deliver a ransom payment to secure the release of dozens of abducted school children.

The elderly man was sent by the children’s parents after they managed to raise 30m naira ($73,000; £53,000) by selling land and other possessions. But they have been left feeling hopeless following his kidnapping.

The north of the country is in the midst of a wave of school abductions carried out by criminals for profit.Ransoms are frequently paid, but this is a rare case where the person carrying the cash has been taken.

The kidnappers called up the school’s headteacher to say that the money delivered was not the agreed sum.The 136 students were taken from an Islamic school in Tegina, Niger state, in late May.

Gunmen riding on motorcycles stormed the town and opened fire indiscriminately killing one person and injuring another.

As people fled, the attackers went to the school and seized the children. The parents and school administrators negotiated with the criminals and agreed to pay the ransom. They sold part of the school’s land as well as other possessions.

Headteacher Malam Abubakar Alhassan told the BBC that six people were sent with the correct amount to meet the kidnappers near the forest where the children were being held.

When they arrived, the gunmen demanded that one of the group, an elderly man, follow them into the forest so that the cash could be counted. But they later called to say the money was not sufficient.

D’Tigers begin quest for olympics medal

Nigeria’s men’s national basketball team, D’Tigers, will this morning, at the Saitama Super Arena, begin their quest for Olympic honours with their sights set on avenging their earlier defeat to the Australians.

The Group B game against the Aussies comes almost two weeks after both sides met in a pre-Olympic Games exhibition match in Las Vegas, in the United States; a game in which the Aussies defeated the Nigerians 108-69.

D’Tigers, in that 39-point loss to the Boomers, were a far cry from the team that had beaten the top-ranked United States and Argentina a few days earlier in Las Vegas, but there were suggestions that Mike Brown’s side took their feet off the pedal against the Aussies, possibly with an eye on today’s clash.

So anyone expecting the Australians, who on paper are superior, to repeat their blowout of the Nigerians today in Saitama could be in for a rude awakening.

For a start, D’Tigers have since that loss had more days to train as a unit and will be a much better side than they were when they played against an Australian team that had spent longer time together.
