China Approves AstraZeneca’s Lung Cancer Treatment

0

China has approved AstraZeneca’s drug Imfinzi to treat aggressive types of lung cancer in adults, to boost its efforts to tackle the disease.

According to a British pharmaceutical company, the drug’s combination with chemotherapy is for adult patients with advanced stage small cell lung cancer (SCLC), approved by the National Health Product Administration in China.

“SCLC is an aggressive form of lung cancer that usually recurs and progresses despite a response to chemotherapy. Only about 3% of patients with a wide range of stages survive more than 5 years after diagnosis.”

Chinese approval came after the positive results of a late-stage trial showing that when used in combination with chemotherapy, it helps improve overall patient survival compared to chemotherapy alone.

According to AstraZeneca, the results of field trials are also in line with global results.

Pharmaceutical companies are also aiming to catch up with Swiss rival Roche. Roche’s Tecentric has been approved for large-scale SCLC in China and many other countries.

AstraZeneca’s lung cancer portfolio includes a variety of medicines, including Imfinzi, which was approved for large SCLC in the United States and the European Union last year.

Imfinzi, which allows the immune system to detect and attack specific cancer cells, has already been approved in many countries as a more common treatment for non-small cell lung cancer.

Lung cancer accounts for about one-fifth of all cancer deaths and is the leading cause of cancer death in both men and women.

Kenya Set For Interviews As 350,000 Vie For 9,000 Teaching Vacancies

The Teachers Service Commission in Kenya will this week begin conducting interviews to fill over 9,000 vacancies to alleviate staff shortage that has impacted negatively on many schools.

The shortlisted candidates will be interviewed between July 22 and July 28 and the successful applicants are expected to report on September 1. The crisis in public schools could worsen when Form Ones report next month.

The commission has already sent the merit lists to TSC sub-county directors who will oversee the interviews that will be done in central venues.

Competition for the slots is expected to be intense as there are more than 350,000 registered teachers who are jobless.

For secondary schools, the prospective teachers applied for vacancies in their regions while primary school teachers will be posted to any part of the country and not necessarily in the county where they will be recruited.

The applicants will be interviewed by panels comprising chair of the board of management, the principal, a subject specialist and the TSC county director or a representative.

The selection panels will comprise the sub-county director, the TSC sub-county human resource officer and two zonal curriculum support officers.

After the interviews, TSC will allow applicants who might have complaints to present them between July 29 and August 6, which will be handled at the county level.

Zimbabwe To Incorporate Voter Education In Tertiary Curricula

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) will soon introduce voter education as a component of tertiary institutions’ curricula as part of efforts to encourage youths to take part in elections.

ZEC is already engaging the institutions in that regard and the parties would sign memoranda of understanding once agreements are concluded.

This was said by ZEC chief elections officer, Utloile Silaigwana, last week when he appeared before the Thematic Committee on Peace and Security to brief them on the status of voter education.

The initiative is part of ZEC’s “Catch Them Young Thrust” and will see the electoral body training lecturers and provide human and material resources where required.

The catch them young initiative is also meant to dissuade youths from engaging in undesirable acts like political violence.

Silaigwana also told the Committee that ZEC now had stand-alone departments on voter education and research and evaluation to ensure that the body fulfils its constitutional mandate

He said ZEC had come up with a programme to target rural women and marginalised communities in the ongoing voter education exercise.

While the electoral body has been carrying out virtual and radio education exercises these are not accessed by some communities especially women.

ZEC’s activities were disrupted due to restrictions on numbers at gatherings which has negatively affected voter education.

Last year Government suspended the holding of by-elections to fill vacant seats due to the pandemic.

The suspension has now been lifted and parties have begun preparations for the holding of the by-elections.

WAEC Concludes Arrangements As 1.6 Million Candidates Register

At least 1.6 million candidates will participate in this year’s West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) scheduled to begin on August 16.

The Head of National Office of West African Examination Council (WAEC), Patrick Areghan, gave the figure in an interview with news men in Lagos.

Areghan said that the council was working to accommodate some schools still lagging behind in registration which he said was taking its toll on the council’s operations.

Areghan said ahead of the conduct of the 2021 WASSCE, the council was working with relevant stakeholders to ensure a hitch-free WASSCE for school candidates, in spite of some challenges.

Areghan noted that examination conduct required money and other resources, adding that the entire process of conducting the examination – from the printing of examination materials, distributing them and ensuring security, to the recruitment of Adhoc staff and printing certificates – is a huge financial burden.

Areghan gave the assurance that WAEC would continue to do all it could to stay afloat.

He noted that the West African School Certificate was internationally accepted and required protection of its integrity

The HNO said that WAEC members had been meeting to fine-tune strategies that would ensure hitch-free conduct of the examination and warned that the body would not hesitate to hand any suspect over to the police.

Jigawa State Records 2,000 Cases of Cholera

Jigawa State government has confirmed the death of 30 people as a result of cholera outbreak while over 2,000 have been hospitalised.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health in Jigawa, Salisu Mu’azu, s disclosed this, saying the cases were reported in nine local government areas of the state. Hadejia and Dutse local governments are the most affected, he said.

Mu’azu said: “The outbreak was worse in Dutse and Hadejia local government areas which may not be unconnected to the suspected flow of water from open spaces into wells and other sources of water used for domestic purposes.”

According to him, the cases started in the last days of the month of June and became worse as rainfall increases flooding in the areas.

“The state government has directed for the release of drugs at three centres of Hadejia, Dutse and Ringim local government areas to enable the victims have an immediate medical attention free of charge.

“Some partner agencies such as UNICEF and Doctors Without Borders have joined hands with the state government in mitigating the scourge from further spreading,” Muazu said.

South Korean Climber Missing After Fall In Pakistan

Fingerless South Korean mountaineer Kim Hong-bin, who became the world’s first disabled person to conquer all of the world’s 14 highest mountains in the Himalayas

A celebrated South Korean climber who lost his fingers to frostbite 30 years ago has gone missing during his descent from a mountain in Pakistan.

Kim Hong-bin had just scaled the 26,400ft (8047m) high Broad Peak in the Karakoram mountains before he is thought to have fallen into a crevasse.

The climb made the 57-year-old the first disabled person to scale all the world’s tallest mountains.

An initial search failed to locate him and a large operation is being planned.

Kim, who had all his fingers amputated after suffering severe frostbite while climbing in Alaska in 1991, reached the summit of Broad Peak on Sunday as part of an expedition organised by a small group, the Korea Herald reported.

The climber is believed to have later slipped and fallen while descending the Chinese side of the mountain in poor weather, the secretary of the Pakistan Alpine Club, Karrar Haidri, said.

“Since then no information is available about him,” he added, telling the Associated Press that planned search efforts on Tuesday included help from the South Korean embassy in Islamabad.

The other mountaineers who were on the climb with Kim initially searched for him, but were hindered by bad weather conditions, Haidri said. They were reportedly all safe and continuing their descent on Tuesday.

Kim made history by reaching the summit of Broad Peak, conquering the 14 highest mountains in the Himalayas – all of which are above 8,000m.

In 2007, he successfully scaled Mount Everest, the world’s tallest mountain which is located on the border of Nepal and China.

Kim represented his country as part of the Alpine skiing team at the Winter Paralympics in Salt Lake City in 2002.

The mountaineer also founded an organisation promoting outdoor activities – including mountain climbing – for children with disabilities.

Abductors Return 1 Out Of 121 Students Kidnapped In Kaduna

0

Abductors of 121 students of Bethel Baptist High School, Kaduna have freed one student on the basis of ill health.

The student, it was stated, was returned by two of the abductors.

A source disclosed that the released student had since been taken to the hospital and is gradually recuperating.

The source said the freed students narrated that the bandits were treating them well, adding that the leader of the abductors directed that none of the abductees be molested.

The source added that the released student said their abductors always allowed them to observe their religious obligations.

According to the source, the student said, “We sing choruses and pray loudly without molestation. The leader of the bandits said we must be allowed to worship our God.”

The source explained that the abductors even asked the students to pray for them each time they were leaving the camp either for operations or market so that they will return safely.

Also according to the source, the church is doing everything possible to meet the conditions laid out by the bandits for the students to be released.

China Accused Of Cyber-Attack On Microsoft Exchange Servers

0

The UK, US and EU have accused China of carrying out a major cyber-attack earlier this year. The attack targeted Microsoft Exchange servers, affecting at least 30,000 organisations globally.

Western security services believe it signals a shift from a targeted espionage campaign to a smash-and-grab raid, leading to concerns Chinese cyber-behaviour is escalating.

The Chinese Ministry of State Security (MSS) has also been accused of wider espionage activity and a broader pattern of “reckless” behaviour.

China has previously denied allegations of hacking and says it opposes all forms of cyber-crime.

The unified call-out of Beijing shows the gravity with which this case has been taken. Western intelligence officials say aspects are markedly more serious than anything they have seen before.

It began in January when hackers from a Chinese-linked group known as Hafnium began exploiting a vulnerability in Microsoft Exchange. They used the vulnerability to insert backdoors into systems which they could return to later.

The UK said the attack was likely to enable large-scale espionage, including the acquisition of personal information and intellectual property.

It was mainly carried out against specific systems which aligned with Hafnium’s previous targets, such as defence contractors, think tanks and universities.

Western security sources believe Hafnium obtained advance knowledge that Microsoft intended to patch or close the vulnerability, and so shared it with other China-based groups to maximise the benefit before it became obsolete.
