Venice Architecture Biennale Opens, 112 Architects And Studios Attend

0

The world’s most prestigious architecture event, the Venice Architecture Biennale, opens Saturday for a six-month show exploring the question of coexistence in a post-pandemic world.

Postponed from last year, the 17th International Architecture Exhibition is titled “How will we live together?”, with curator Hashim Sarkis asking architects to reflect on the future and its challenges.

Sarkis, a Lebanese architect and dean of MIT’s School of Architecture and Planning, believes the city of the future will be born from the need to share collective spaces, consume less and create — or encourage — new forms of solidarity.

There would be “spaces to assemble, where people pass by, seeing the daily life of others… places where economic, ethnic differences are revealed”, he said.

In allowing different people to come together in spaces, Sarkis hopes to start a dialogue, hoping that “in this way architecture can help transform” society.

  • ‘Most innovative’ –
Sarkis has brought together 112 architects and studios for the biennale, almost all of them working on the event for the first time and the majority of aged between 35 and 55.

As a new and more diverse generation challenges existing models and shows off a better mastery of the latest technology, does it mean the end of big-name architects?

“I looked everywhere for the solutions that were most innovative and creative. That was my criteria to choose the participants. It’s not a question of stars,” Sarkis said.

There are 63 national pavilions set up among the vast gardens on the eastern edge of Venice, as well as within the immense halls of the Arsenal, Venice’s former shipyard and armoury, and some areas of the city’s historic centre.

In the exhibition open through November 21, strict sanitary measures will remain in place, as Italy makes its first tentative steps towards normalcy amid a drop in new Covid-19 cases.

With Grenada, Iraq, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan participating for the first time, this year’s show boasts a high number of participating countries from Africa, Latin America and Asia.

The Biennale poses the question whether the post-pandemic age is the start of a new era or just a passing phase.

Walking through the Arsenal’s 3,000 square metres (32,300 square feet) and the garden pavilions, that question is addressed through installations, videos, projects and ideas.

Virtual maps, giant wooden models, interactive machines, designs for poor neighbourhoods — all of them proposals that question the model of coexistence for the future.

The Biennale will award its Special Golden Lion to the late architect Lina Bo Bardi (1914-1992), an Italian-Brazilian modernist who designed Sao Paolo’s Museum of Art.

Sarkis has said Bardi’s work best illustrates the themes covered in the 2021 exhibition.

“She exemplifies perseverance in difficult times, whether wars, political conflicts or immigration, and her ability to remain creative, generous and optimistic at all times,” he said in April at a press conference.

The living architect to be awarded this year the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement will be Spanish architect Rafael Moneo, 84.

Italian teenager Benedetta Pilato set a new world record for the 50m breaststroke in the semi-finals of the European Swimming Championships on Saturday.

Pilato won world silver in the event behind King in Gwangju, South Korea, in 2019.

The 50m breaststroke, unlike backstroke and butterfly over the same distance, is not a race included in the Olympic Games.

Following Incidents Of Gas Explosions, Ogun Temporarily Bans Sale Of Industrial Gas

The Ogun government has temporarily banned the sale of industrial gas following recent explosions in the state.

Two persons were reportedly injured on Friday morning as a gas explosion occurred at Onikoko area of Abeokuta, the Ogun capital.

On Thursday, a gas explosion occurred at the Olusegun Obasanjo presidential library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, killing one person.

Less than than 48 hours before the OOPL incident, a gas explosion rocked the Conference Hotel opposite the library, claiming two lives.

On May 12, three people, including an infant, were killed, while others sustained injuries, following a gas explosion that occurred in another area of the state capital.

Speaking during a stakeholders meeting in Abeokuta on Friday, Femi Ogunbanwo, the state commissioner for special duties and intergovernmental affairs, said all major stakeholders in the gas sector are expected to abide by the directive.

“Anyone found guilty of selling adulterated gas products or violating safety protocols would have the full weight of the law to contend with,” he added.

He added that Dapo Abiodun, the state governor, has been in consultations with the federal authorities, relevant agencies, and the police to investigate and bring to book whoever is found guilty of sharp practices or negligence that could cause further occurrence.

Also speaking, Ola Oresanya, special adviser to the governor on environment, described the incidents as an ugly development which must be nipped in the bud.

Earlier, a team consisting of Ogunbanwo, Oresanya, Rasaki Ojetola, permanent secretary, ministry of environment, and other government officials had visited different sites of the explosions and some gas plant outlets.

During the visits, two plants in Omida and Idi-Ori in Abeokuta metropolis were sealed off.

In October 2020, following incidents of gas explosions across the country, the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), released new guidelines for the establishment and operations of downstream gas facilities across the country.

2021 UTME: JAMB Says New Mock Notification Slips Ready

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has asked candidates who registered for the 2021 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) and indicated interest to sit for the optional mock examination to reprint their notification slips.

JAMB had changed the date of the mock exercise from Thursday, 20 May to Thursday, 3rd June, 2021.

The board urged the candidates to reprint because the new slip will bear the new date, adding that the slips can be printed from anywhere the candidates find convenient provided they have internet access.

To print the slip, the board’s head of media, Dr Fabian Benjamin, asked the candidates to visit https://www.jamb.gov.ng, click on e-facility and print the slips.

He said the slip contains the candidates’ details such as registration number and, most importantly, the centre at which they are to sit for the examination within their chosen examination town and the expected time to be at the centre.

Fabian advised that candidates print their slips and study the contents to know the location of their centres as some candidates do not read the instructions on their slips only for them to be looking for the name of their examination town instead of their examination centre on the day of the exercise.

Junta Leader Affirms Myanmar’s Suu Kyi In Good Health, To Appear In Court

Myanmar’s junta chief says deposed civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health and will appear in court within days during the general’s first television interview since the coup.

Min Aung Hlaing, who toppled Suu Kyi in a February 1 putsch, gave a two-hour interview to Hong Kong’s Phoenix Television on Thursday, with the full programme yet to air.

“Aung San Suu Kyi is in good health. She’s been staying at home and will appear in court in a few days,” he said in an excerpt released on social media Saturday.

The general was speaking in Burmese and his comments were translated into Chinese by the network.

Asked about Suu Kyi’s political achievements, the military leader said: “In short, she has done everything she can.”

Suu Kyi has not been seen in public since she was placed under house arrest.

She has been hit with a string of criminal charges including flouting coronavirus restrictions during last year’s election campaign and possessing unlicensed walkie-talkies.

The most serious charge alleges that she violated the country’s colonial-era Official Secrets Act.

Suu Kyi is expected to appear in person in court on Monday for the first time, after weeks of delays to her legal case.

Her legal team have faced an uphill battle to meet with their client in private.

China Becomes 2nd Nation To Land And Operate Rover On Red Planet

0

China’s Mars rover drove from its landing platform and began exploring the surface on Saturday, making the country only the second nation to land and operate a rover on the Red Planet.

The launch last July of the Tianwen-1 Mars probe, which carried the Zhurong rover, marked a major milestone in China’s space programme.

Tianwen-1 touched down on a vast northern lava plain known as the Utopia Planitia a week ago and beamed back its first photos of the surface a few days later.

The Mars probe and rover are expected to spend around three months taking photos, harvesting geographical data, and collecting and analysing rock samples.

The six-wheeled, solar-powered, 240-kilogramme (530-pound) Zhurong is named after a Chinese mythical fire god.

China has now sent astronauts into space, powered probes to the Moon and landed a rover on Mars — the most prestigious of all prizes in the competition for dominion of space.

The United States and Russia are the only other countries to have reached Mars, and only the former has operated a rover on the surface.
