British Judge Rules In Favour Of Franklin Graham’s Lancashire Festival Of Hope Ads

A British judge has ruled that Blackpool Council discriminated against Christians when it banned ads for the Lancashire Festival of Hope with Franklin Graham.

Judge Claire Evans of the County Court of Manchester ruled Thursday that the Blackpool Borough Council and Blackpool Transport Services wrongly censored ads for a 2018 event featuring Graham, son of the late evangelist Billy Graham.

Evans concluded that the Council and transportation officials had violated Graham’s religious rights and “had a wholesale disregard for the right to freedom of expression possessed by the Claimant.”

“It gave a preference to the rights and opinions of one part of the community without having any regard for the rights of the Claimant or those who shared its religious beliefs,” wrote Evans.

“It made no effort to consider whether any less intrusive interference than removing the advertisements altogether would meet its legitimate aim.”

“This ruling confirms that all Christians in the U.K. have the right to share their beliefs in the public square without being discriminated against or interfered with by public officials and other groups that want to silence them,” Barrett said.

“I am grateful the courts have once again reiterated that the freedom to speak only what is not offensive is not freedom of speech at all.”

For their part, the Council and the transportation officials said they were reviewing the decision to determine any possible further action, according to the BBC.

Fake New York Socialite, Anna Sorokin Faces Deportation

A con woman who was jailed for financial crimes while posing as a wealthy New York socialite has been detained by US immigration authorities.

Anna Sorokin, who created a fake persona as Anna Delvey, was taken into custody on 25 March.

The 30-year-old is facing deportation to her home country Germany after her release from prison in February.

She was found guilty in April 2020 of stealing from banks and hotels, having scammed more than $200,000 (£153,580).

A spokesman for the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency said Sorokin was being held at a county jail in the state of New Jersey. No more details were given.

Sorokin, a German citizen, had overstayed her US visa.

Sorokin reported to immigration authorities in New York on 25 March and was due to be deported to Germany a day later, but has remained in the US. It is not clear if Sorokin is challenging her deportation.

Attack At US Capitol Complex Not Terrorism-Related – Police

An attack at the US Capitol complex in Washington DC has left one police officer dead and another in hospital with injuries.

A car crashed into a security barrier before the driver lunged towards the officers with a knife, police said. The officers opened fire and the suspect was shot dead.

Authorities said the attack, which came three months after January’s deadly Capitol riots, did not appear to be terrorism-related.

“Whether the attack was at law enforcement, or whoever, we have a responsibility to get to the bottom of it and we’ll do that,” Robert Contee, the acting chief of Washington DC’s Metropolitan Police Department, said at a news conference.

Acting Capitol Police Chief Yogananda Pittman said it was “with a very, very heavy heart that I announce one of our officers has succumbed to his injuries”.

As it happened: Police officer killed in attack on US Capitol

In a later statement, she named the officer as William “Billy” Evans, who had been a member of the Capitol Police for 18 years and was part of the department’s first responders unit.

“Please keep Officer Evans and his family in your thoughts and prayers,” she said.

President Biden Stands with Ukraine Against Russia’s Aggression

U.S. President Joe Biden used a first official phone call with President Volodymyr Zelenskiy on Friday to offer staunch support in Ukraine’s standoff over Russian troops near its border.

Washington has been Ukraine’s most powerful ally since Russia’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 but ties were overshadowed by Ukraine’s unwilling involvement in events leading to the impeachment trial of Biden’s predecessor Donald Trump.

The conversation came after Western nations and transatlantic military alliance NATO voiced concern over Russian troop movements near the eastern Donbass region where Ukrainian troops are in conflict with Russian-backed forces.

The call lasted about 50 minutes, according to Zelenskiy’s chief of staff.

“We discussed the situation in Donbass in detail. President Biden assured me that Ukraine will never be left alone against Russia’s aggression,” the Ukrainian president said in a video statement afterwards.

Russia said this week that an escalation in Donbass could “destroy” Ukraine and warned against any NATO deployment.

Ukraine, Western countries and NATO accuse Russia of sending troops and heavy weapons to prop up proxies in Donbass who seized a swathe of eastern Ukraine in 2014. Russia says it only provides political and humanitarian support to separatist fighters in what it casts as an internal conflict.

ICC Welcomes Lifting Of Trump’s Sanction On Its Prosecutor

The United States on Friday lifted sanctions on International Criminal Court prosecutor Fatou Bensouda that drew international criticism after they were imposed by the administration of former President Donald Trump.

The move, announced by U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, lifts the sanctions imposed on Bensouda over her investigation into whether American forces committed war crimes in Afghanistan.

It also removes Phakiso Mochochoko, head of the ICC’s Jurisdiction, Complementarity and Cooperation Division, from the Specially Designated Nationals list.

Blinken said Washington was taking the step even though it continued “to disagree strongly with the ICC’s actions relating to the Afghanistan and Palestinian situations” and to object to ICC “efforts to assert jurisdiction over personnel of non-States Parties such as the United States and Israel.”

Blinken said Washington was encouraged that a broad range of reforms were being considered to help the ICC “prioritize its resources and to achieve its core mission of serving as a court of last resort in punishing and deterring atrocity crimes.”

A spokesman for the ICC said the court and its governing body of the member states welcomed the U.S. move.

In his formal announcement terminating the sanctions, dated Thursday, Biden said that while they were neither “effective or appropriate,” the United States would “vigorously protect current and former United States personnel” from any ICC attempts to exercise jurisdiction over them.

Calling himself “The Puzzle King”, it has taken a German puzzle enthusiast four and a half months to put together a 54-thousand-piece jigsaw.

“I worked every day between four to five hours on the puzzle and sometimes to even a full day once a week. It felt like a marathon of 12 to 14 hours.”

Titled ‘Travel Around Art’, the vast puzzle is some 8-point-6 meters -long and 2 meters high.

It shows the complete form of an art gallery, which is adorned with famous artworks like Gustav Klimt’s ‘The Kiss’, Monet’s ‘Poppies’ and ‘Girl with a Pearl Earring’ by Johannes Vermeer.

He is now waiting for his achievement to be listed in the Guinness Books of Records.

Carnivac-Cov Registered In Russia As COVID-19 Vaccine For Animals

As governments across the world scramble to roll out COVID-19 vaccine doses for their people, Russia has registered the world’s first coronavirus vaccine for animals.

Developed by a unit of Russia’s Federal Service for Veterinary Surveillance, the vaccine is called Carnivac-Cov.

According to authorities, it’s so far the world’s first and only product for preventing COVID-19 in animals with over 90 percent efficacy.

Immunity lasts for six months after vaccination, but the shot’s developers continue analysis on the drug.

The research involved dogs, cats, foxes, minks and other animals.

The vaccine will likely go into mass production as early as April.

New Platform Allows Small Investors To Share Ownership Of Piece Of Art

The last year in the pandemic has seen a lot of people start investing for the first time, pushed in that direction by low-interest rates, but also some with a little stimulus money in their pockets.

Work by famous artists like Jeff Koons or Jean-Michel Basquiat sell for huge sums. Most people can only enjoy them at exhibitions, rather than being able to own them.

That’s all starting to change though, with a new platform that allows small investors to share ownership of a piece of art worth more than 100-thousand U.S. dollars.

For as little as 1, 000 won, less than a dollar, people can own a share in a piece of art, which can be bought and sold on a secondary market.

The artwork is so popular that during the 10-minute interview with the CEO of online art investment platform TESSA, the ownership shares for one piece of art by Yayoi Kusama completely sold out.

Seoul’s Bid To Co-Host 2032 Summer Olympics Submitted To IOC

Seoul’s metropolitan government has submitted a bid to the IOC to co-host the 2032 Summer Olympics with Pyeongyang.

Seoul city expressed regret to the committee that it had already selected Australia’s Brisbane as the preferred choice leading to the co-host proposal being submitted.

The bid is in line with what was agreed during the September 2018 Pyeongyang Joint Declaration when President Moon Jae-in and North Korean leader Kim Jong-un agreed to cooperate in hosting the event.

Authorities said a Seoul-Pyeongyang Olympics would represent peace and unity through sports.
