White House Rules Out A US Vaccine ‘Passport’

0

The White House on Tuesday ruled out imposing any form of a coronavirus vaccine passport in the United States, but said private businesses were free to explore the idea.

Press Secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that government would not now, nor will be, supporting a system that requires Americans to carry a credential.

She said there will be no federal vaccinations database and no federal mandate requiring everyone to obtain a single vaccination credential.

So-called vaccine passports, showing that someone has been inoculated against Covid-19, have been touted around the world as a potentially powerful tool in safely reopening countries to mass gatherings and travel.

However, the idea has prompted widespread pushback over concerns due to potential privacy or other civil rights abuses.

Psaki said that the strongest interest comes from private businesses looking to reopen sites where “there are large swaths of people,” like in stadiums or theaters.

She said the government would issue guidance to questions that Americans have in particular around concerns about privacy, security or discrimination.”

Human Rights ‘Non-Negotiable’, EU Officials Tell Turkey’s Erdogan

0

Top European Union officials have met with Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan insisting on Ankara improving its human rights record and the rule of law before any moves to improve EU-Turkey relations.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Council President Charles Michel met with Erdogan in Ankara weeks after the Turkish leader took conciliatory steps toward the EU and European leaders agreed to increase trade and improve cooperation with Turkey on migration.

They agreed to offer Turkey new incentives despite ongoing concerns about the country’s backslide on democratic and human rights, and its energy ambitions in the Mediterranean Sea.

They however also made clear that a stable and secure environment for EU members Cyprus and Greece is another prerequisite for closer ties with Turkey.

Erdogan’s efforts at reconciliation comes after last year tensions over a decision to stop deterring migrants from crossing its border into Greece, and dispatching of Turkish research ships into waters claimed by Greece and Cyprus.

Turkey is formally a candidate for EU membership, but its bid to join the 27-nation bloc has been at a standstill.

Last month, Erdogan pulled Turkey out of a key European convention aimed at combatting violence against women, triggering criticism from EU officials.

The move was a blow to Turkey’s women’s rights movement, which says domestic violence and femicide are on the rise.

Mozambique Needs Urgent Aid Amidst Humanitarian Crisis

0

National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction says Mozambique urgently needs Aid amidst a deepening humanitarian crisis after deadly attacks by militants affiliated with the Islamic State group.

The assault on the town lasted 12 days before the Mozambican military said on Monday it had regained control of the town.

Cesar Tembe, director of the Prevention and Mitigation Area said the needs for assistance for about one month for displaced people coming from Palma, about 30,000 people, are estimated at about 600,000 US dollars.

On March 24, the northern Cabo Delgado province took a turn for the worst after their latest attack on the town of Palma in which thousands of people were killed and tens of thousands made homeless.

Thousands poured into Cabo Delgado’s capital Pemba, which is already brimming with people displaced by previous attacks and the 2019 cyclone.

The attack also forced French energy giant Total to suspend operations and evacuate staff from its Afungi liquid natural gas (LNG) facility near Palma.

The homegrown militancy, Al-Shabaab, has grown in power since 2017 and in capturing towns, committing brutal killings on civilians with over 700,000 displaced across Mozambique.

Keke Palmer Says She’s Comfortable Being Herself

1

Keke Palmer is confident and comfortable with being herself  and being by herself. But it hasn’t always been that way.

Palmer rose to fame as a kid on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon circa 2008. But being a child star and gracing the cover of Tiger Beat isn’t always what it’s cracked up to be.

“At a young age, as a child [in the] entertainer world, your emotions are always the last thing that people care about,” she said on InStyle’s Ladies First with Laura Brown. “I think you get really quickly into being a people-pleaser and trying to be everything that everybody wants you to be. And so I think in a lot of that, you end up being misunderstood.”

Since growing out of her child stardom and transitioning to her adult career, Palmer has learned to stop caring so much about what the public thinks of her. But she says it’s something she still works at every day.

“I’ve fought a lot of that most of my adult life, and I’m still new into my adult life,” she said. “And I think that’s something that I work towards every day is to not worry about people not understanding me, because I understand myself.”

India Court Says Bytedance Should Deposit $11 Million In Tax Evasion Case

0

An Indian court on Tuesday said China’s ByteDance must deposit around $11 million that federal authorities believe the company owes in an alleged case of tax evasion, a setback for the firm which wanted to unblock its bank accounts to pay salaries.

An Indian tax intelligence agency in mid-March ordered HSBC and Citibank in Mumbai to freeze accounts of ByteDance India as it probed some of the firm’s financial dealings. ByteDance challenged the move in court saying the freeze amounted to harassment and was done illegally.

ByteDance has said in court it does not owe the tax government is demanding and does not agree with the tax authority’s decision to freeze its accounts.

After a government counsel said ByteDance owed the authorities about 790 million rupees ($11 million), the High Court in Mumbai said the company will need to keep that amount blocked in a state-run bank.

That amount will be frozen, the two-judge bench said.

However, the four blocked bank accounts of ByteDance had just $10 million in funds, according to the company’s court filing seen by Reuters.

A counsel for the federal tax authority, Jitendra Mishra, said ByteDance can utilize the $10 million for making the court mandated deposit, but cannot use it for any other activity. Effectively, Mishra said, the accounts still remain frozen until the amount is moved to the state-run bank.

ByteDance did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

ByteDance in January reduced its Indian workforce after New Delhi maintained a ban on its popular video app TikTok, imposed last year after a border clash between India and China. Beijing has repeatedly criticised India over that ban and those of other Chinese apps.

Still, the company has told the court it has a workforce of 1,335, including outsourced personnel, which includes 800 people working in its “trust and safety” team that supports activities like content moderation overseas.

U.S. Auto Industry Calls For Government Help As It Warns Of Impact Of Chip Shortage

0

A U.S. auto industry group on Monday urged the government to help as it warned the global semiconductor shortage could result in 1.28 million fewer vehicles built this year and disrupt production for another six months.

The U.S. Commerce Department should dedicate a portion of funding in a proposed bill to expand U.S. semiconductor production to auto sector needs, the Alliance for Auto Innovation said in written responses to a government-initiated review.

U.S President Joe Biden in February ordered several Federal agency actions to address the chip crisis and is also seeking $37 billion in funding for legislation to supercharge chip manufacturing in the United States.

Some funding should “be used to build new capacity that will support the auto industry and mitigate the risks to the automotive supply chain evidenced by the current chip shortage,” the group’s chief executive, John Bozzella, wrote.

The group said the U.S. government could specify “a particular percentage – that is reasonably based on the projected needs of the auto industry – be allocated for facilities that will support the production of auto grade chips in some manner.”

The group represents nearly all major automakers with factories in the United States including General Motors Co, Ford Motor Co, Volkswagen AG, Toyota Motor Corp and Hyundai Motor Co.

Automakers have been hit particularly hard by the global chip shortage after many cancelled orders when auto plants were idled during the coronavirus pandemic.

When they were ready to recommence production, they found that chipmakers were busy fulfilling orders for the consumer electronics industry which as seen demand for premium devices – both for work and leisure – boom as people spent more time at home.

Most automakers have been hit by the shortage. In recent announcements, Ford said last week it would cut output at seven North American assembly plants, while Kia Motors said it was cutting two days of production in Georgia.

Visitors Welcomed With Full Blooms At California’s Carlsbad Flower Fields

People took pictures amid waist-high blossoms in every imaginable hue of orange, pink, yellow and purple at California’s famous Flower Fields in Carlsbad as it opened to the public.

The attraction was closed for most of 2020, due to pandemic-related restrictions, but plummeting coronavirus cases and California’s move to the orange tier of lockdown restrictions means the fields can once again welcome a limited number of visitors.

“I am so happy we’re open again,” said general manager Fred Clarke. “Last year we were nine months in and we had to mow the crop down.”

The fields, 34 miles (55 km) north of San Diego, showcase more than 70 million flowers, creating an annual spectacle when they bloom.

“It does feel like things are easing a little bit. It’s just great to see the beauty and just get out and enjoy a day with my wife,” said Artie Creighton, 53, from Corona, California.

“This is one of the first times that we’ve been out in a long time.”

The Flower Fields, which are open to the public until May 9, are also a working farm that sells flowers, which end up at florists and supermarkets, Clarke said, explaining how they breed their own variety of ranunculus.

“We’re hybridizing ranunculus and every year trying to improve the quality, the size of the flower, the brightness of the color, the uniformity of the crop,” he added.

“So every year we believe it’s getting better and better.”
