The Federal Government has announced that it had begun the collation of data of all out-of-school children across the country.

Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Farouq, said the exercise was being handled by the National Steering Committee on Alternate School Programme.

She disclosed this in Abuja during the second meeting of the committee which was held at the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation.

Farouq said about 12 million children were currently out of school in Nigeria, citing data released by the National Bureau of Statistics.

She said the committee will work with the statistics made available by the NBS to engage these out of school children.

Ronaldo’s Castaway Armband To Be Auctioned To Help Suffering Baby

The captain’s armband that Cristiano Ronaldo flung to the ground in disgust after Portugal were controversially denied a late winner at the weekend in the World Cup qualifier against Serbia was put on auction on Tuesday in a bid to help a sick child.

With the scores level at 2-2 in Belgrade, Ronaldo thought he had scored the crucial goal in stoppage time when the ball appeared to cross the goalline before Stefan Mitrovic cleared.

But without technology in use, the goal was not awarded.

A fuming Ronaldo was booked for his protests and at the final whistle, as he stormed from the pitch, he threw his captain’s armband to the ground.

One of the stewards at the stadium picked it up and immediately contacted a regional sports channel with the idea of auctioning it for charity.

The man, who requested anonymity, told AFP he suggested raising funds required to treat a six-month-old baby, Gavrilo Djurdjevic, who is suffering from a rare disease.

“He (Ronaldo) threw the armband three metres away from me, and the idea immediately occured to me that this (sale) could be a good opportunity,” the man told AFP by phone.

“I realised we had some attention and could do something nice for Gavrilo”, he added.

After the sports channel Sportklub verified the item’s authenticity by checking post-match photos and videos, they teamed up with a charity organisation and put Ronaldo’s armband up for a bidding contest on auctioning website Limundo.com.

“I hope we will be able to reach Ronaldo himself… so we could help Gavrilo as much as we can,” Branislav Jocic, social media manager of Sportklub told AFP.

The infant is suffering from spinal muscular atrophy (SMA), which affects about one in 10,000 births, and results in death or the need for permanent ventilation by the age of two in 90 percent of cases.

His hope is pinned on a one-time gene treatment Zolgensma, also known as the “world’s most expensive drug”, which would cost more than two million euros ($2.35 million).

Boko Haram Sponsors: Shocking Names on The List – Presidency

0

The Federal Government has made a shocking discovery of sponsors of Boko Haram and bandits, the Presidency said last night.

It restated the claim that a link between kidnapping for ransom, banditry and Boko Haram sponsorship had been established.

These sponsors include some bureau de change operators with contacts abroad, Senior Special Assistant to President Muhammadu Buhari, Mallam Garba Shehu, said.

According to him, there is evidence that money is being sent from United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Boko Haram leaders.

He confirmed that the statement by Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum (NGF) Dr. Kayode Fayemi that Boko Haram sponsors are behind banditry and kidnapping is a product of intelligence gathering.

He said many people have been arrested and that after investigation, those involved will be exposed.

He warned that there would be no sacred cows even if those involved were found to be politicians.

Shehu, speaking on Channels Television, said: “It is shocking to any Nigerian that places of worship and farmland are places where killers of policemen and security officials are being harboured.

“The new Service chiefs are working with the IG and heads of intelligence agencies and there is a clear lead.

A lot of people have been arrested in terms of their financing (of terrorism).

“There are a number of people  who are currently under arrest.

“Bureau de change are facilitating money to terrorists. We have already concluded with the UAE on Nigerians who are transferring money to Boko Haram terrorists and this also happens domestically.

“And I tell you that by the time we conclude this investigation, the shocking details will surprise many Nigerians.”

Also yesterday, President Muhammadu Buhari ordered Security Chiefs to “take out” the leaders and sponsors of bandits and kidnappers.

He also reiterated his call on them to bring down violence in the country within the next few weeks.

Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Lucky Irabor and National Security Adviser (NSA) Maj.-Gen. Babagana Monguno (rtd) confirmed the new order after a meeting with the President.

Gen. Monguno told State House reporters: “Mr. President has made it very clear to both the intelligence and operational elements that the first assignment will be to identify the leaders of these bandits, kidnappers and take them out, in order to restore confidence in those areas.

“Mr. President has said that he will no longer tolerate a situation whereby bandits and kidnappers are the ones dictating the pace and setting the tone and he will not also condone a situation in which our own operations are reactionary rather than being proactive.

“He has also indicated his willingness to provide all the resources required by our own troops in order to put down these criminals. They must be brought down with all the ruthlessness that is required and whoever is working in collaboration with them will be brought to book.

“He has also declared that there will be no adjustment in whatever the National Security Council has already laid out until normalcy is restored. He’s also aware of attempts by certain elements, working in cahoots with all kinds of people in and out of the country to continue with exploiting the minefields, especially in Zamfara State.

“A ban has been placed on mining and that ban has to be enforced, people have to comply with whatever the President has laid out. Of course, we, in the intelligence domain, are aware that there are individuals and groups who are planning to link up with all kinds of non-state actors in order to frustrate the efforts of government in implementing the ban on mining, as well as enforcing the no-fly-zone so that no rotary aircraft will land, drop whatever and pick up whatever. That has to be enforced.”

Gen. Irabor promised that the Service chiefs would live up to the President’s expectation.  He said: “What Mr President said is that we must bring down the level of violence in the country within few weeks to enable our farmers to go back to the farms. That is on course.

“I believe that before the rains come you will have witnessed a downward trend in the violence across the country and i’m sure that you will attest to the fact that the heightening of operational engagements has yielded positive results.

“He is encouraging us to heighten the tempo of operations. He is satisfied with the way we’ve started and he wants us to maintain the tempo and increase it.

“We’re on course. I’m saying that our operational engagement, the totality of all our engagements, both in manpower increase as well as equipment increase and heightened operational engagements, the totality of it is what I’m saying is on course”.

0

The 11 Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) across Nigeria recorded a shortfall of N273.42 billion in 2020 and received a total of N542.73 billion out of N816. 15 billion they billed their consumers. This is an increase of N42.46 billion from the total of N230.96 billion shortfall recorded in 2019.

Findings also revealed that the amount the DisCos generated from their consumers in 2020 increased by N55.49 billion from the N487.24 billion recorded in 2019.

This was disclosed by the National Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) in its 2020 financial report.

Highlights of the report

  • Ikeja Disco led the pack raking the highest amount of electricity bill from customers. It received N105.23 billion in 2020.
  • Yola Disco, however, received the lowest revenue in the year under review. It got N10.74 billion during the period.
  • Eko DisCo made revenue of N84.7 billion, followed by Abuja DisCo with N82.6 billion.
  • Ibadan DisCo also recorded N61.8 billion within the period under review.
  • Enugu DisCo recorded revenue of N47.83 billion while Benin and Jos DisCos received N45.66 billion and N17.44 billion respectively
  • Kaduna, Kano and Port Harcourt DisCos got N21.53 billion, N33.84 billion and N31.4 billion respectively from their electricity consumers.

What you should know

Two months ago, NERC announced that 62.63% of electricity customers in Nigeria were under the estimated billing package as of September 2020, a development that will not make the DisCos’ shortfall go away so soon.

If Electricity consumers have pre-paid meters, the DisCos will heave a sigh of relief, as everyone will be forced to pay for their consumption with the pre-paid cards bought from the DisCos.

This was disclosed by the Commission in its 2019 to Q3, 2020 Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) Key Financial and Operational Data, according to Nairametrics.

The NERC disclosed that metering for customers has been a challenge so far, citing that only Eko Electricity Distribution Company and Ikeja Electric Plc had metered over 50% of their customers.

The last ticket in Group L is being contested by two West African teams of Sierra Leone and Benin Republic which ultimately means that the West African attendance will rise to 12.

The 11 qualifiers from West Africa are: Nigeria, Ghana, Cote d’Ivoire, Mali, Guinea, Burkina Faso and Cape Verde.

The others include debutants, The Gambia, Mauritania, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal.

Egypt Warns Against Ethiopia’s Unilateral Actions Over Disputed Dam

0

Ethiopia’s unilateral actions over the filling and operation of the controversial Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) will have “massive negative repercussions,” Egypt’s Minister of Irrigation and Water Resources Mohamed Abdel-Ati warned on Sunday.

Abdel-Ati gave the warning during his meeting in Cairo with the U.S. Special Envoy for Sudan Donald Booth and Marina Vraila, head of the political, press and information section of the European Union (EU) delegation to Cairo, Egypt’s Ministry of Irrigation and Water Resources said in a statement.

The minister and the U.S. and EU diplomats tackled the current position of the GERD negotiations and ways to restart the talks with the aim of reaching a fair and binding legal agreement for filling and operating the mega dam.

During the meeting, Abdel-Ati reviewed Egypt’s clear desire to complete the negotiations, emphasising his country’s determination to preserve of its water rights, according to the statement.

The minister also affirmed Egypt’s full support for the Sudanese proposal which calls for forming an international quartet led by the Democratic Republic of Congo, the current chair of the African Union (AU), that includes the AU, the United States, the EU and the United Nations.

Ethiopia, an upstream Nile basin country, unilaterally carried out the first phase of filling the dam in July 2020 and is planning to go ahead with the second phase in July this year in spite of the concerns of Egypt and Sudan, which have repeatedly called for a prior tripartite binding agreement on the rules of filling and operating the controversial dam.

Ethiopia started building the GERD in 2011, while Egypt is concerned it might affect its 55.5-billion-cubic-meter annual share of the Nile water.

Sudan has recently been raising similar concerns over the 4-billion-U.S.-dollar dam.

Microsoft Reportedly Seeking To Invest Over $1 Billion In Israel

Microsoft a US tech giant is reportedly planning to invest $1 billion to $1.5 billion in Israel through setting up a new data center locally and expanding its chip research and development activities.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella spoke to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu earlier this month and informed him about the plans, Globes reported on Monday, without saying where it got the information.

Nadella told Netanyahu that Israel is “a very important development center for Microsoft,” Globes said, stating that the CEO has made no requests for government incentives for the investments and none were offered.

Spokespeople for Microsoft in Israel and for the Prime Minister’s Office declined to comment on the report.

Microsoft benefits from a low tax rate of 6% on profits from the intellectual property generated in Israel, lower that the average corporate tax rate of 23%. Small tech firms pay a tax rate of 7.5% to 12%, Globes said.

The US tech giant said last year that it would set up its first cloud data center in Israel to offer services to Israeli customers, starting with Azure and following with Office 365, expected to be operational sometime this year.

The setting up of the center “marks a significant investment by Microsoft in the Israeli market,” the company said at the time.
